Ah fuck yeah! I've been really getting into this game lately, and actually patronizing the forums which are supported at the site that interview is on! This was such exciting news!!!! XD From a gamer standpoint exciting getting a little bit more viewpoint on the game, and from another... well.... it's obvious. :P Fandoms colliding!!! O_O;;;

I'm first in line to camp the Ai Takahashi NM! (wonder if anyone around here knows what I'm talking about ^^;;)

Btw yeah, I played FFXI for a few years, and had an account open as recently as this past spring. ^^ I'm taking the opportunity to educate the gamers at ZAM about MM and Ai-chan etc... lol. Wonder if they'll care. XD

THOSE would be pics we'd have to circulate around here. ;)

Does FF need a reboot?

Quote
Final Fantasy XIII was hardly a failure, selling a whopping 5 million copies plus. "But when it comes to the customers' reaction to the quality of the game, some value it highly and some are not very happy with it," Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada told website Gamasutra.

"I think this is a product that was able to meet the expectations for those who know Final Fantasy," Wada added. "There are all kinds of games around in the market today. Should Final Fantasy become a new type of the game or should Final Fantasy not become a new type of game? The customers have different opinions. It's very difficult to determine which way it should go."

I don't see the need to reboot a franchise that makes so many changes between iterations. It's a tricky one, cause a lot of fans have different opinions on where it should go. Some appreciate that the game goes to different worlds, some want more stories to be told in Midgar. Some want new iterations to keep a certain type of combat system but add and build to it, others want a completely new one. Some want input from Western developers, some want the game to feel Eastern in every aspect.

Mang the most important thing for me are a story and characters that I care about. That's why FFVI is my favourite. What I also missed in FFX is an open world map because I love finding new places to visit and having the opportunity to go back if I want.

Btw I read about Final Fantasy Tactics (for PS) that it has a great story and stuff. Why have I almost never heard of this game before? Also, is the Tactics Advanced for GBA the same game only with different graphics?

Tactics Advanced is different compared to the PS1 game. The story's not the same at all, with none of the political intrigue and it's a more lighthearted in tone in comparison, and I think the battle system is a little more simplified, if I remember correctly you can cast spells instantly in Advance but in Tactics you have to wait a number of turns. The biggest change between the two is Advance's Law system, where each battle is governed by a set of rules like you can't use this type of weapon, or these elemental spells where if you break them during battle your character can be imprisoned. But each battle has settings that Judges like to see in battle, and if you fulfill those conditions then you get Judge Points which can make combos with allies or activate summons.

Still a great game, but for me, in terms of the better story and the depth in the fighting, I prefer the original. I just love the world of Ivalice. If you want to play that one Shi then you can either play the PS1 version, or ideally the upgraded edition they released for the PSP known as FFTactics : The War Of The Lions, which adds multiplayer, animated cutscenes, voice over work and I think new job classes and new special characters to recruit like Baltheir. Can't really go wrong with either one, both has some really addictive gameplay.

I really want to go back and play it now! /dusts off his copy

WOW that's really a great answer to my question!! Well I don't have a PSP so I guess I'd have to go for the PS1 version if I want to play it. :D Not that I know where to find it LOL

I'm very intrigued by what was described as a dark story in this game :D

EDIT: Wow it's kinda expensive on ebay incl. shipping. I'll put it on my list of games to buy when I'm rich (...have a job)

FF never needed a reboot. It does one every game. The battle mechanics has also been evolving every game.

What they need is to refine and improve. Make a world, like XII, where players can get lost in. Make a story that gets us all emotional with sacrifice and guys fighting destiny.

Something they haven't done right recently. The villians are way too basic. And we can't get attached to them like earlier FFs.
It would be great if they could take more time in building up the nemesis/final bosses backstory throughout the game to the point where you have a feeling of accomplishment and high five yourself after beating a cool bad guy. Instead of getting a giant puzzleface cheat of an opponent blocking the exit, that you have no feelings or remorse for. ahem... :P

So in short, we like FF. We don't want FF Monopoly, but you can still make those.

Even if FF did a reboot, would players notice? I know I'm not the biggest FF fan out there (... to put it mildly), but I do know that every FF game I've tried out have been quite different... even though you can totally tell that they're in the same series of games.

The battle systems have been changed around a lot, the worlds go from extremely linear to extremely open... yet still you can always tell that it's an FF game

If they were to reboot FF, though, I'd love for them to make it an action RPG 8D; See, my main gripe with the FF series is the battling, I find turn-based combat extremely tedious in the long run. Had FF been action RPGs requiring a lot less grinding and time-wasting to make progress then I would be all over all of these games *O*

.... but that's just me. And of course, changing the battle system that drastically would perhaps remove some of what FF really is. I'm not sure the fans want that, and I don't think Squeenix should do a reboot like that just to win over a few semi-fans like me xD;;;

Awww, FFT...

I've bought the US PS1 version in 1998.

Honestly, I really treasure the magic moments I've spent on this awesome game.
Even now, listening to its soundtrack brings me shivers every time... and it's the only game I've spent 150 hours on it (but I was young and innocent then lol)...

I would HIGHLY recommend this fantastic game, most of all for its incredible and awesome soundtrack, one of the best ever made.
And for its story.
And the tactical aspect.
And the chara-design.

Thought this was quite interesting, an explanation on every Final Fantasy logo used and what meaning it has, if any. Be warned though there are spoilers. It did for IV and VII so I am not looking at XIII XD

Also, I didn't realise that you can unlock gamer pictures by getting achievements in the game! :o I got the 'Loremaster' achievement two days ago and when loading it up yesterday, there was an 'Extras' option in the title screen, and I got a gamer picture of Sach. I will get a picture of Lightning. I must!

Final Fantasy Legends Formally Announced
The Final Fantasy IV The After team reassembles for an all new Final Fantasy game.

Quote
Word leaked out earlier in the week from V Jump about a new mobile Final Fantasy game. Square Enix followed up today with official announcement.

Fully titled Final Fantasy Legends: Hikari to Yami no Senshi ("Warriors of Light and Darkness"), the all original title is being developed by the staff that brought us 2008's Final Fantasy IX The After.

Like The After, Legends features 2D sprite visuals. The game will also feature many of the other elements one would expect of a classic FF game, including a traditional story surrounding crystals, light and darkness, and character growth via a job change system.

Regarding the job system in particular, Square Enix says the distribution model of the game's scenarios will shine a spotlight on the jobs. It did not provide further details.

Final Fantasy Legends will be available on mobile portal Final Fantasy Mobile starting in September for iMode users and later this Winter for EZweb users. The game's prologue will be free. Subsequent chapters will run 300 to 500 points (about ¥315 to ¥525).
