Trying to reason with people on the merits of the FF series, only to have them counter with "But the guys look like chicks!" all the time is frustrating to say the least.

Damn you Vaan.

Amp told me to do this. A not 100% accurate translation of some of the 4Gamer article. The class descriptions are really tedious. I might do the rest of them later XD;;;;; aaaugh won't promise anything, though.

Quote
"FINAL FANTASY XIV", the new MMORPG from Square Enix (Windows, Playstation3) will start it's BETA testing on July 10. The Windows version is set to be released on September 30 (PS3 version is slated for release in March 2011). Specifications required for play will be announced. We won't talk much about FFXIV until those PC requirements are published, but the news this time is a presentation of information on the 18 classes that are planned for the official time of release. This article presents these classes separately with both pictures and descriptions.

According to Square Enix, you won't be able to play all of these 18 classes in the BETA test, though they'll all be available at the official release. That is to say that in the beta test, the current playable classes are said to be Harvester of the Gatherers group of classes, and the Woodworker, Weaver, and Tanner of the Crafters group of classes. The remaining classes being Fisherman of the Gatherers group, and Goldsmith, Armourer, Culinarian, and Alchemist of the Crafters group.
What's more, additional classes are set to be added in on and after the official release. Check out the presentations of the 18 classes here to get an idea of what kind of classes you can expect.

A review of FFXIV's class system
FFXIV has a class system called Armoury system. You can easily change classes depending on the player character's alteration of weapons and tools. The weapons and tools can be divided into four general groups; weapons, magical items, gathering tools, and manufacturing tools. These tools function with the different fighter, sorcerer, gatherer, and crafter groups. Please look at the following text or 4Gamer's articles here and here for a summary of these groups.

Fighter Group Classes
格闘士[Pugilist]
"The punisher with no hands"
A fighter who's followed the traditional art of self defence.

The trained fists are already lethal weapons, but by equipping weapons known as "touki" the destructive power of those fists can be more than doubled.

In order to honour the Pugilist's feelings as a proud close combat fighter, how you approach your enemy in order to get close is essential. There are also Pugilists who carry chakram for the purpose of using them to divert the opponents attention before attacking.

剣術士[Gladiator]
"The defender skilful in both offense and defense"

From daggers to long sabres, from double edged blades to curved single edged blades, the Gladiator is a fighter who use a wide selection of one-handed blades as his main weapon.

The gladiator uses his skills to adapt to various situations. If he's carrying a shield he'll change into a heavy soldier protecting his friends. If he's got one hand free, he'll focus on offense and be a regular warrior. He is flexible and can change his role on the battleground. His wide killing, striking, and throwing tactics is characteristic to the Gladiator.

斧術士[Marauder]
"The terrifying destroyer"
The Marauder is a fighter whose main weapon is the "battle axe" which he uses to destroy enemy pirate ships or for heavy attacks on its landing party.

You get a strong impression that it's a traditional pirate weapon, but there are still many Marauders who are famous for violently fighting their way through city wars, or from the grasp of powerful goblins.

The gladiator takes pride in his huge axe capable of destroying enemy shields, and make enemies faint from the impact, but the throwing axe Fransisca is also an important weapon for dealing with tough pirates aboard ships.

弓術士[Archer]
"The hurricane attacker"

The Archer is a fighter whose main weapon is the bow and arrow, which is excellent for sniping from long distances or from high angles.

Being able to pick the right spot to shoot from, and the right kind of arrow for the right kind of enemy are important tactical decisions.

In Eoruzea, hearsay is spread about the superior Elzen archers, and the weakpoints of the Miqo'te archers. There are also Archers who, helped by their excellent eyesight, makes stone throwing their strong point.

槍術士[Lancer]
"The transformation striker"

The Lancer is a fighter who has made the long spear his main weapon. The long spear has a long reach, and skilfully stabs the enemy.

In addition to stabbing, the Lancer can choose between a variety of offences depending on the kind of spear used.

Influenced by the Ala Mhigo, proud of their strong prospering, there is a tendency to compete to have the longest spear handle. Nowadays the various spear shapes are mixed together.

Usually the Lancer also carry throwing javelins for long distance battles.

Sorcerer Group Classes
幻術士[Conjurer]

"The magnificent spiritualist"

Called "illusion technique", the Conjurer is a sorcerer who can use strong magic to effect attributes. He can think up creations that are full of overwhelming environs, and he can figure out various elements of attributes.

He carries a magical staff made from wood, relaying on that he can change elements by magic.

Their temple is in Gridania's eminent old cavern, said to be where the whispers of the forest's trees gather.

呪術士[Thaumaturge]
"The stern fantasist"

Called "incantation", the Thaumaturge is a sorcerer who manipulates strong magic of a destructive nature. He goes into the true nature of overwhelming things and can manipulate a persons inner hidden power.

The Thaumaturge carries a magical sceptre with a rosary attached. Using that he can change the spirit by magic.

Urdaha's two large worshipping chambers are incantation temples, the temples protect the countless priests who study their arts there.

... lololol. Take all of this with a grain of salt @_@; I'm sleep deprived, and not really able to decipher some of these sentences xD; Ah, I did my best.

Need help guys :nervous In Chapter 10:

I've tried to beat Raines about 5 times now and I've not succeeded. That dude is crazy. Actually crazy. 220,000 health? Has ridiculous physical and magic attacks, can guard like a sentinel and heal himself. Fuck! My party of choice now is Lightning, the all round ass kicker, Sach who is the Ravager and casts the buff spells and Fang who's a Commando/Ravager/Sentinel/Saboteur when I need her XD It says he's susceptible to slow so that's why I've kept Fang above Snow. Fang and Sach aren't great at healing so that's why I switch up to Lightning as medic when necessary.

Anyway first couple of times I kept dying when he switched to offense mode and did that ridiculous ground combo into the aerial combo on Lightning. So I kind of wised up and decided to play it defensively when he's in offense mode (Sen/Med/Med), and either buffing up and weakening him (Com/Syn/Sab) or all out attack (Com/Rav/Rav) when he's guarding. Now that was working until I got him down to about an 1/8th of his life left when he kept casting Deprotect/Poisonga/Cursega all at the same time while I'm trying to remove the buffs he has and before I know it, he gets as I'm healing Sach. :banghead:

The thing is that I go on the attack when he's in defense but I do such insignificant damage to him when he's guarding. I even staggered him and he was still able to guard during it, wtf? I'd attack him when he's healing to but he doesn't do that so much towards the end of the fight.

If anyone can remember please give me some indication I'm approaching it right or maybe give me a few pointers. :nervous Will give it another crack tomorrow. Interesting boss fight though! I like the challenge a lot. Just makes me laugh that a l'Cie is like 10 times harder than the fal'Cie who made him

Maybe I was lucky, I don't remember him being much of a pain.

Here's some points, that won't help you win, but will give you an idea:
1. When he's on guard, don't attack. AND DEFINITELY don't stagger (cos it doesn't affect him when he's in that status). heal up, buff. just don't waste moves attacking till he changes back. Then full on attack.
2. Your 3 paradigms seem alright, especially for this fight. Just seems you're missing the right moment to stagger.
3. If it still fails, use map status buff items before the fight to give you an early edge.

And if you totally give up. 3 words. gamefaqs and youtube.

One good tip when you see a large attack coming is switch to sen sen sen quickly and just take it! now you might not be able to do that yet, but you do have at least 2 sentinels in your team so it won't be so bad.

You can even do it when you see the attack name pop up, just quickly switch before the attack hits, and you'll take much less damage, then you could even switch back to an attacking team and then only heal when necessary rather than having a med out all the time.

Another thing that might be troubling you is none of the characters you have are great healers, their healing spells are much lower in level than Vanille or Hope so having only 1 med means healing takes you far too long. 2 is better like you are doing, but when he goes into defense mode maybe quickly switch to med med med, but your sen med med is fine here, just more or less heal/buff in defense then do everything you can to stagger him, then do as much damage as you possibly can.

What I remember of this fight, it takes a long time no matter what you do, so survival is probably the key, so don't go to crazy on attacking, just keep at it :D

I didt it yaaaay! XD Died again before hand though, he had haste on and I remember Lightning was a medic and he cast fog which hit me and sealed my healing magic. He almost went straight from that Sepharic Ray (?) attack into his combos right on me. So I maxed out an accessory I had to raise the fog resistance, put it on Lightning and  took pika's advice by switching the team a little, taking Sach out and putting Hope in. Sach may have haste/bravery/faith but Hope's got protect, it was a life saver! And he definately did heal better than Sach too. Had a bit of a scare when he had all these debuff effects on the party and everyone was close to dying, really another of those rays and I was a goner, so I immediately called in Odin. Not only did he do a fair amount of damage, but when the rest of the party came back they were at full health and those status effects had lifted. Definately another lifesaver.

It took me 15mins when the desired battle time was 10. 10?! :o Got no stars as a result! Hope there isn't an achievement for 5 starring all the bosses XD Crystarium expanded again and yeh, that's a hell of a lot of CP all considered! :o So am I right in saying there's no more expansions until post end game?

Summon monsters have always taken a backseat since VIII IMO. They especially took a backseat in XII, where it was just more practical and damaging to use your meter for Limit Breaks. I find I use them a lot more in XIII, as there are no limit breaks. They dish out a lot of damage and from recent experience, using them can save your butt as the party returns with full health should the fight continue. Handy to fall back on.

Bahumut is awesome! I can see myself using Fang as the party leader a lot now she has her ATB boost.

Final Fantasy XIII spin-off games Versus and Agito won't be released for ages, Tetsuya Nomura has revealed.

The Japanese RPG legend has sprayed Twitter with an information explosion, and revealed that "there are a number of unannounced titles" to be revealed before the two games are released.

Unveiled in 2006, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is a PlayStation 3 exclusive action role-playing game that's part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII compilation.

Also unveiled in 2006, Final Fantasy Agito XIII is a PlayStation Portable exclusive that is without a confirmed Western release.

"Versus has had many difficulties," Nomura said on Twitter (translated by Andriasang)

"And past method of production have been completely inapplicable, but these are the difficulties of birth, so we are working hard. We have a lot to announce, but because we're going in order, I can't say too much yet."

By order, Nomura means promoting games in the order of their release.

Nomura said Square is casting voice actors for Versus and Agito as we speak. PSP Parasite Eve game The 3rd Birthday's recording "will end shortly". Then it's on to Agito.

Nomura confirmed Versus and Agito will skip the German show gamescom, due to run next week. "There are a number of unannounced titles. These will come before Agito and Versus. Some have finished voice recording. Announcements will take place in Japan."

Tokyo Game Show?

I can only assume that the difficulty of creating Versus XIII is, oddly, creating an RPG with towns and an open world map for this generation. Development costs are huge, and even creating a town in a FF game must be a lot of work. I doubt you would see cut and paste jobs of buildings but with a different colour, it's FF so everything is going to be meticulously detailed.

I'm on Chapter 11 now and loving it. Doing all these hunt missions like in XII, getting rewards for it afterwards, ah I love it. One question though, what's the best way to earn gil at this stage? My amount of credit and incentive chips are dwindling fast! XD I assume it's finding components and selling them on?

FINAL FANTASY THREAD!  :w00t:

Thanks for the info, Tuffty. I was trying to find if there's any release info of Versus just few days ago. Still gotta wait patiently  :nervous

Anyway, can I tell my FF story here?  :P
I've liked video gaming since I was a kid and I often watched bro playing the 8bit Nintendo lol. I was in high school when I really got into Japanese stuff. I had seen Final Fantasy series often mentioned in game magazines and it was praised a lot. One day mom was going to a city and asked if she could bring me a game called Final Fantasy 9. It was the newest one at that time. When mom came back she said she couldn't find 9, but there was 8 so she bought it. So FFVIII was the first one I finished  :twothumbs My sister's friend was some hardcore fan and when I one time got stucked in the game really bad, she came over to our place and showed me what to do. I had been playing quite a lot, but I never used magic in the battles XD So the friend was wondering how the hell I got this far in the game without magic LOL.

I really liked FF8 and got hooked. My other sister said that one of her classmates is a fan and he could lend me FF9. I got it from him for few weeks, but couldn't finish it during that time tho. It took a while before I could buy it myself. I think I actually bought FF9 and FF7 at the same time. I was going to buy FF9 but was lucky to find FF7 on sale too  :P I finished FF9 first and then started FF7. I know FF7 is like super praised, but I didn't find it that amazing. Sure I know it was a big improvement in FF series or something, but still.. I didn't really get it lol. I've been thinking of starting it over again since I've went it through only once... maybe some day XD

I also bought FF Origins (FFI-II if I remember right..), but I never finished those... I just couldn't stand the oldschool graphics and battles XD

When FFX was released I bought it before I even had PS2 haha. Then I got PS2, but didn't have a memory card XD Anyway, FFX is prolly my fav FF >_> Maybe 'cos the voice acting was a new thing (altough some voices sucked lol) and the graphics were awesome since it was the first PS2 FF. I also LOVED the story~ FFX-2 was the first FF I actually pre-ordered lol. I liked it XD It's so girly and different from previous FF stuff, but maybe that's why I liked it haha. It was awesome to finally control a female character  :P And Paine! SO COOL

FF12... ugh >_> I had high expectation for this game. But it sucked, IMO. I hated how the characters look. Like wtf's wrong with their noses? Vaan is the ugliest main character ever  :bleed eyes: Also, I didn't really get the plot. I lost it somewhere, so I just kept playing and had no idea what's going on D:
After FF12 I had to wait a loooooooooooong time untill FF13 was released. I didn't even buy PS3 before the release day was like in 3 months away XD I pre-ordered, got the game and finished it in 3 weeks *__* That was some intense gaming lol. I again love the fact that female character is the main  :P Lightning looked so cool in the trailers and she IS awesome, BUT Fang's even more awesome  :w00t: I just wish FF13 was longer. And I missed those peaceful cities where u can relax and buy stuff and just hang around like in other FF games. Now it kinda felt like it's non-stop fighting.

And that's all! XD lol. Sorry for such long rambling  :nervous

Cool +u+u XD

That's a bit similar to my story!! (seeing as most of the early FF games didn't even come out in EU XD) I played 6 first, but I got stuck at the part where Sabin has to do his combo XD... i even tried again years later but it happened again XD XD
Then I played 7-13, 7 was my fav!

Also, all that was mentioned about Versus at gamescom is that it's delayed until 2011 at least, they haven't event done the voice acting yet D: Agito too!!!

I wonder why are they taking so long for Agito and Versus, not that I'm complaining, I'm all for delays if it means a better game.

Square Enix has me waiting for so many games, Versus, Agito, and most importantly: DRAGON QUEST X!

I'm hooked up with Versus but Agito not that much! XD
Anyway... let's hope that we'll get on the TGS 2010 a Trailer with gameplay and such...

Do you think that we'll finally have an option to choose either English or Japanese voice acting in Versus  :ph43r: I heard that it was supposed to be an option in FFXIII already, but because of Xbox they took it off....
