That would suck, but I'm sure the tech savvy Thai nerds will be able to get around the ban somehow.  Stick it to the MAN Thai citizens.

Seems a bit extreme. Censoring never really works out.

Do they not know that forbidding people to do something is just going to want to make them do it more?

The Thai computer geeks will figure something out. they are, after all, computer geeks. THEY HAVE POWERS...oh, uh, I mean, they're smart, they'll be able to work around it.

I've had some youtube videos come up with a message saying something like "This video isn't licenced for viewing in your country." (I'm in the UK) and it won't let me watch them.  I just use keepvid.com and it let's me download them!
Sig gone. Tinypic is no more.

I am from Thailand. I can bypass and watch YouTube.  I support the censorship of webpage insulting monarchy, however.  YouTube and Google self-censorship for Communist China. Most Thai Citizen want to preserve Monarchy Institution.   IF Google is fair and don't self-censorship everywhere in the world, I will accept that.
There is censorship in China, Western Germany, so internet is not for free afterall.  If one shout Bomb in US, he probably will be in a lot of trouble and get deport from US.
I hope that Thai government learns to censorship individual page (about Monarchy insulting) in YouTube. I will be happy then.

Well, it is not about fear or not.
My opinion is that UK monarchy was overexposed. The result is a weaken institution. So we want to control access to Thai Monarchy.
Since monarchy in Thailand has no direct power, in order for it to survive --  Constitution and Thai People must protect it.  Monarchy is very beneficial to Thailand, so Thai People help protect it at this history period.

So.. they seriously 'banned' youtube because of ONE video?!  Isn't that just a little ridiculous?

Wouldn't it just have been easier to ban that one video?

The saddest thing is that before this controversy, many of non-Thais didn't know anything about the Thai king or the Thai military government.

Their first exposure to both topics was the whole Youtube mess.  So now we see copycats uploading similar videos making fun of the king, for no other reason other than to spite the government censors.

The government has really shot itself in the foot - it wanted to protect the monarchy, but by associating the monarchy with its own incompetent policies, it's actually aroused anger against the monarchy.

Yeah, I understand that Thais respect their king a lot, but banning an entire site just because of one video is really going overboard IMHO...
