Variant of blackmailing virus now spreading on the web

But I wonder how the author can get away with this. Surely what he's doing is illegal no matter where you are.... right?

Whatever, that jerk can encrypt whatever files he wants, he wouldn't get a cent of my money. I'd rather lose the files than give him what he wants.

And important files should always be backed up anyway. Even if your PC is 100% protected, you could still have a hardware failure or a stupid little brother / sister....
