Kids Who Say 'Yuck' to Foreign Food May Be 'Racist'...
« on: July 08, 2008, 11:22:21 PM »
Quote from: news
LONDON, July 7 (UPI) -- Toddlers who say "yuck" when given flavorful foreign food may be exhibiting racist behavior, a British government-sponsored organization says.

The London-based National Children's Bureau released a 366-page guide counseling adults on recognizing racist behavior in young children, The Telegraph reported Monday.

The guide, titled Young Children and Racial Justice, warns adults that babies must also be included in the effort to eliminate racism because they have the ability to "recognize different people in their lives."

The bureau says to be aware of children who "react negatively to a culinary tradition other than their own by saying "yuck."

"Racist incidents among children in early years settings tend to be around name-calling, casual thoughtless comments and peer group relationships," the guide says.

Staff members are advised not to ignore racist actions and to condemn them when they occur.

Claim: Kids who say 'yuck' may be racist

WOW. Am I the only one who sees the danger in this obsession with race and political correctness...especially where it relates to something that is COMPLETELY unrelated to race and/or political correctness?

Let me just say this, kids aren't racist until they grow older and can actually tell the difference between food from different cultures and can take that into account instead of taste and appearance.

That article is misleading.  The statement was made by "National Children's Bureau".  They're just a charity and have no authority in law, but it looks like they're publishing leaflets and information making their hateful claims that others might take seriously and you'll probably get schools taking notice of it and implementing their nasty policies when they don't have to.

It's people doing things on other people's behalf like that that's causing more hate against Muslims.  People will read that story and they'll think "Those #^$£$£ Muslims telling us what to do..." when it's not Muslims making the original statement but stupid busybodies who aren't fit to be doing the job they're doing and should be shovelling shit or something.

Another example is a recent story about how the police have made little boots for it's sniffer dogs to wear because "dogs are unclean to Muslims" and the police are making the dogs wear little boots when they enter a Muslims home.  An Imam was quited saying that the sniffer dogs were acceptable when it was necessary and it's only the dog's saliva that's unclean.  (Any animal's saliva would be unwanted if it dribbled on your floor anyway, not just a dogs.)  Another case of stupid idiots doing something on behalf of Muslims without even bothering to consult someone about it first.

part of that is kinda funny since a dog's saliva is actually quite clean.

What a load of tosh. You could set any kind of foreign food in front of a child, tell them it isn't foreign and they might still find it disgusting. I somehow doubt finding certain foods disgusting is any indication of racial prejudice, it's just they don't like the food. Simple.

This ridiculous. Seriously, sometimes Kids can be really picky eaters. It doesn't make them racist. It makes them children. Now if your kid breaks out with a racial slur, then you MIGHT have a problem, but even then he or she may just be repeating what has been heard without knowing the implications of the word.

Toddlers don't know the meanings and implications of racial slurs.

Here's something I realized growing up in a pretty diverse environment. When I was young, I knew nothing about race and just played with pretty much any kid who was willing to play with me, and from what I could tell and remember most kids are the same. It's when we get older and notice the differences, we start mainly hanging around certain kinds of people, usually people that are more like "us." I heard racist or hateful comments all the time, I sorta knew what they meant or atleast the type of people they were meant for, but it wasn't till I was about 10 or most likely even older that I actually knew their true implications.

Just from that I can tell that little kids most likely can't be racist. The thought of racial superiority is something taught and will only get stronger if it is constantly re-enforced until they reach the age of realizing their social identity.

Political correctness is taking over everywhere.  Did you know that Halloween and Christmas are offensive too!

man... some people have too much time in their hands... race doesn't exist to toddlers... adults socialized them into thinking in terms of race and all that whatnot...

why are people obssessing over universalism and particularism? i dont' get it... can't things be as simple as "i like it" and "i don't like it"?
