Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Details Allegedly Leaked Via Survey

A report from UGO, sourced from a reader submitted survey, hints at unreleased details on Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS. It's worth mentioning that virtually no details have been released on the game so far, so anything we hear will be considered "unreleased." We should also consider it rumor for now.

According to the UGO post, Chinatown Wars focuses on "an outsider navigating the criminal underworld of a major city", with the player controlling "a young gang soldier involved in the internal power struggle for control of his gang."

The survey also allegedly spills details on what that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection support will be.

Four different game modes, one of them a race mode, are said to be included in GTA: Chinatown Wars. Cooperative wi-fi multiplayer is also listed as a feature.

The alleged survey also notes that the game will feature "20+ hours of straight gameplay" over the course of 70+ missions, as well as stylus-based, contextual mini-games "such as assembling a sniper rifle to complete an assassination mission, and smashing locks and hotwiring cars to steal them."

While the graphical plummet from Grand Theft Auto IV to whatever the Nintendo DS can spit out will certainly make it a strain on the eyes, we're still interested in the handheld exclusive release. If these details pan out to be true — we're checking in with Rockstar to see if they feel like confirming — we'll be in for something swell, I'm sure.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Due Before Feb. 1

Our nation's youth will be corrupted on the go, Grand Theft Auto-style, as early as November of this year and as late as January of 2009, according to today's Take-Two Interactive investor call. CEO Ben Feder pegged Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS as a fiscal Q1 '09 release, putting it in the same quarter as GTA IV's Japanese launch date. Feder wouldn't confirm that the title would hit before the holidays, despite requests from callers to clarify.

If rumors are right, Chinatown Wars will hit in the same three month window — November 1 to January 31 — as GTA IV's Xbox 360 exclusive downloadable episodes. If that GTA three-way does happen, it could make for a very happy group of shareholders. And a lot of virtual bystander corpses.

I've been thinking about getting this too. I've had a little bit of fun with the GTA games, but never enough to actually buy one of the ones for the console. Maybe being on a handheld will be a little better for me.

AWWWWWWWW YEAHHHHH, a GTA: Chinatown thread!?  Sweeeet.  I started playing that a while ago.  Haven't gotten THAT far into it; at least far enough to do my first drug deal.  :pimp:

Sadly, I've been too distracted by school/work/life/Suikoden Tierkreis to continue GTA. :ph43r:

Take-Two's 'Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars' Bellyflops

Take-Two's (TTWO) Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is dying on the shelves.

We noted earlier this week that analysts were split on how well the game would do when the NPD Group reported US videogame sales for March. Estimates ranged from 450,000 units sold on the high end to as low as only 200,000.

Now we have data, and the number is far worse than the most conservative estimates: 88,704.

(Industry sources provided us with the data -- not on the report -- and we've asked NPD for confirmation.)

The game is the latest in a hugely successful franchise and received a stunning 94 points on Metacritic, practically the videogame equivalent of winning multiple Oscars.

So how did Take-Two flub a sure thing? Chinatown Wars was built for the wrong console. The title -- whose gameplay centers around drug dealing, cold-blooded murder, and sex -- is only available on the Nintendo DS, who's primary audience is children. Parents refused to let their kids play, and the adult DS audience just isn't that big.

Take-Two reps tell us in a phone call that they remain confident in the long-term success of Chinatown Wars, and they note March was difficult for all videogame publishers, with sales down 17% across the industry.

Chinatown Wars may yet find life down the road, but all in all a rare misstep from Take-Two. And the winner here might actually be Sony (SNE): The Chinatown Wars disaster will likely scare other publishers away from making new adult-themed games for the Nintendo DS. Some may redirect efforts towards Sony's PSP, which targets a somewhat older crowd.

WTF is wrong with today's parents?! Shit, if I had kids I'd buy them the whole fucking GTA series. FUCK POKEMON, GTA IS DAT DIGITAL CRACK! XD

Shit, that sounds really bad. I bet all the adults who have a DS have like an R4 or something so they just downloaded it. They gotta support that game man! That must be a real turn off for developers now...

GTA: Chinatown Wars Week on Rockstar Games Social Club

Beginning May 1st, owners of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be given the chance to receive the rare and highly-coveted "Bulletproof Hellenbach" vehicle, given away exclusively to members of Rockstar Games Social Club.

This in-game content will only be available via Social Club for a limited time, and if they haven't already, players are encouraged to head on over to the site to synch up their stats via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and check out more of the latest features that have been rolling out for Chinatown Wars since launch like the newly enhanced Rampage tracker, and an all new line-up of Social Club-exclusive papercraft models ready to be downloaded, printed, and assembled.

The full details on how to obtain the Bulletproof Hellenbach are listed below:

(1) Become a registered Social Club member before 11:59 PM ET on May 7th 2009 (Thursday).

(2) Link your Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Nintendo DS Friend Code to your Social Club account before 11:59 PM ET on May 7th 2009 (Thursday).

(3) Sync your stats anytime after your Friend Code is linked.

The car will then be available at the Auto Merchant in BOABO. It will be the last car on the dealer's list but you can skip to it directly by hitting left on the d-pad. (Note that the Auto Merchant opens for business in one of the early missions, "The Wheelman.")

They still seem to have that bullet proof car. Guess it was so popular, they kept it.

Check it, new mini game:

Mr Wong's Laundromat Now Open in the Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Section

The newly opened webgame, Mr Wong's Laundromat, will allow Social Club members to earn and transfer cash/multiplayer skins back to their linked Nintendo DS.

Today we're excited to announce the grand opening of Mr Wong's Laundromat on Rockstar Games Social Club. This webgame allows players of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars to log onto Social Club and test out their money laundering skills in an effort to win cash/unlockable multiplayer costumes that can then be used in their copy of Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS.

Players can earn up to $10,000 per day working for Mr Wong, a local Chinatown 'businessman' who's helped more than his fair share of cash trickle seamlessly and undetected through the streets of Liberty City over the years.

Additionally, the Chinatown Wars Download Section has been updated with Guardian Lions and Mr Wong's ringtones (in both Mp3 and M4R format) as well as a Mr Wong desktop background. Stay tuned for more updates to the Chinatown Wars Download Section in the near future.

If you need to add your Nintendo DS Friend Code to your Social Club account (needed to transfer any money/multiplayer costumes you earn from Mr Wong back to your game) you can click here. You can also play Mr Wong's without having a DS Friend Code linked to your Social Club account and submit scores to the top 50 leaderboard.

Go here: http://socialclub.rockstargames.com/games/cw/mrwong.html

Not sure how that cash or skin transfers over, but fuck with the slanging i'm doing. Who needs it! still I pick up 10 bucks from trash bins lol

Chinatown Wars coming to PSP

Rockstar Games has announced a PSP version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. The game will be released in Europe and the US this autumn.

Rockstar Leeds will develop, and focus on the strengths of the handheld; widescreen support, better lighting, animation and all-new story missions.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars earned top marks on DS back in March, although retail reception was tame.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/gta-chinatown-wars-for-psp

Will be interesting at least to see how it differs from the DS. Will it be a straight port minus the touch screen mechanics?
