Got a few games from the PSN January sale after all.
- Ni No Kuni: Gorgeous looking game and incredibly charming. Reminds me of one of the most underrated games, Dark Cloud 2, and it's not so surprising considering that Level 5 made both. It's essentially a Studio Ghibli story with Dragon Quest mechanics. Not particularly challenging, yet, I am only 7 hrs in what is a massive game, but still enjoying it a lot. Mr Drippy is great.
- Okami HD: Another gorgeous game, even better than I remember it. It's one of those games that feels timeless.
- DMC HD Collection: Bit disappointed in this one actually. Let's get this out of the way though, it is absolutely worth the money for DMC3 alone. I love that game and when I booted up the first mission again, I was back in the swing of it and loving it. It's a masterpiece. My disappointment lies in returning back to DMC1. It's less forgiving then I like and feels a lot more...rigid. The semi fixed camera can often lead to you getting hit outside of view by enemies throwing projectiles. There's fewer combos and the style ranking itself is really unforgiving. If you're not constantly on the attack then your A combo just goes and you're back to D ranking. It's hard to keep a good combo going. Also some really annoying enemy types like the Shadows or the Reapers which you have to rely on your guns to kill and in DMC1 especially, the guns were just never really that interesting or fun to use. I know it's an early PS2 game, the first in the series which has been refined since, it'll just take time for me to dial it down and get back in the swing of it. With the HD collection itself, they upped the resolution and made the gameplay widescreen but they didn't redo the textures so wide shots still look nice but if you pay close attention to the carpet or something it just doesn't look good in 1080p. Also they have no treatment to FMV or any of the original game menu's, which are stuck at 4:3, with these horrendous black borders covering most of the screen.
