Rumour has it that a new RE game is coming, but being developed from the same team that made SOCOM.

What's with all these Japanese game companies outsourcing to Western developers?

Two new games on the horizon, the first will be very familiar for us fans:

Quote
The recently announced Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica HD revamps will be download titles, scheduled for release this Autumn on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

The initial reveal in the latest issue of Japanese games mag Famitsu suggested that both titles would be bundled together in a single boxed product called Resident Evil: Revival Selection.

However, an official statement from Capcom Europe only references a digital release on these shores.

We've been in touch with the publisher for clarification and will update when we get a response.

Both titles have been enhanced with upgraded HD visuals and given achievements or trophies, while Resident Evil 4 gets the Separate Ways bonus content too, which featured in the PlayStation 2 and Wii versions of the original game.

And the second is an all new spin off from the team behind SOCOM

Quote
First details have emerged of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, the much rumoured franchise spin-off from SOCOM developer Slant Six.

According to Official Xbox Magazine's imminent scoop, kindly summarised by StickSkills, it's a team based shooter set in the Resident Evil 2 era that sees up to four players cast in one of three factions.

As a member of the Umbrella Security Services Squad you'll have to scour Raccoon City destroying evidence, head-shotting zombies and brutally sweeping T-Virus survivors under the proverbial rug.

There are also two other teams to choose from, which Capcom apparently insists constitutes a "three-corner conflict". As well as the Umbrella death squad, US Special Ops are also on the scene, as are "bio-organic weapon monsters" created by Umbrella.

The Umbrella team is made up of four new characters: Vector, Beltway, Bertha, and Spectre, and the game will play out slightly differently depending on who you choose. Various familiar faces are due to pop up along the way, including Leon Kennedy.

You'll earn XP as you progress, which allows you to earn new abilities, such as Vector's cloaking skill, and weapons.

It sounds like it's set to be a more gun-ho Resi than we're accustomed to, with ammo management not playing such an important role. "It's not fair to give people big guns, then take all the ammo away," reads a quote from the OXM piece.

Apparently the game is due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the Autumn.

Interesting to see what the latter will look like.

There's also news that the release date has actually been pushed up a month, so it's out in October now. There's also news of the Premium Edition for your consideration. Now get this. The Premium Edition includes a copy of the game (either PS3 or Xbox 360), a set of four tablet case covers (one for Chris, Leon, Jake aka Wesker Jr., and a secret one), and Leon Kennedy’s leather jacket. Not as some alternate costume. Not as something for your avatar to wear. The actual leather jacket for you to wear.

To get all that will only cost you oh, 105,000 yen. That's $1300. Or £817. It's the most expensive special edition for a game of all time. I'm all for special editions with stuff like t-shirts, posters, soundtracks all that good stuff, rather than in game weapons that are way overpowered for you to use at that stage, breaking a game's balance. But I do believe I'll pass on this one.

The demo is really fun! when it unlocks for non-Dragon's Dogma players, everyone should get!!

Meanwhile, some RE6 Mercenaries screens showed up, along with some other things:

I don't remember which RE game had the hot girls in hotpants, but they are a welcome addition nonetheless.

Sadly, Capcom decided it would be a good idea of have timed exclusive gameplay modes for the 360. This is right up there with store exclusive content in terms of bullshit in the games industry that needs to die.

Honestly, most of these things are either Microsoft or Sony's doing, and they pay for them during the development cycle, Sony is usually more guilty than Microsoft these days.

So...next week then.

The demos are almost universally slated for their lack of tension, the continued lack of ties to survival horror like in past Resident Evil games and generally being a poor game all round, with bad camera issues and boing gameplay. I didn't really mind the demos, but I'll be curious to see what the reviews are like. I get the feeling I won't like Jake's sections all that much

I cleared up some space to try the demo and was left disappointed. It's not a terrible game but the camera...my God the camera!! It wasn't an issue in RE5 where you have to stop and shoot but in this where you can run and gun and melee all over the show, the camera goes everywhere and it's just disorientating. And it's so close up against the character too that I can't see everything when I'm shooting. Supposedly a future patch in the game offers a camera angle that's pulled back a little. Might just wait for that to arrive and see what it looks like before I get the game. Some actions are cool, like the diving back and shooting, but they're minor gems in an otherwise bland combat engine. Also, minor thing I know, but I still think it's stupid that a kick to the chest kills a zombie.
