Default iPhone software doesn't allow saving directly to the SIM, since the contacts are usually more complicated than just "name and phone #".  If your new phone can sync to google contacts or your address book on your PC, that's probably how Apple would like you to do it, rather than have you lose your address/email data for your contacts.

Instead of letting users potentially lose a big chunk of their personal data, Apple engineers usually take the stance of "if there is any potential for the user to get into trouble with this, we shouldn't have it.  Even if it's a standard feature that makes life easier for those who know what they're doing, we just won't do it."

That said, if you're using a jailbreaked phone (which I believe you said you were), there's some apps that can do that for you.  One that I found by name via a simple google search is called "iSIM".  Hope that helps.

Holy shit man!! I think I clicked on a wack poland file. and it was doing this "updating" sure. virus. avoid.

But it froze up my laptop. twice!!

Then it gave me a big memory dump.

I did system restore and it all seemed well. I spent over 1.5 hrs backing everything up and went back to surfing, until it froze again DAMN!

Would a reformat do? Or somehow my video card/motherboard is toast.

I had this problem earlier in the summer and had it replaced.

That kind of error is usually the result of a bad interaction between your hardware and the OS.  Such stuff can usually happen if you got corrupted drivers, or some hardware failure/overheating problems.  Since you've got a laptop, replacing the hardware is pretty much out.

Though options are limited with a laptop, we can try to eliminate some obvious problems first.

Since you say a system restore seemed to make it better, it's possible you might need to update your drivers.  You could start with that, but since the problem came back after a while it makes me think that it might be more hardware related.  If you're lucky, it's just overheating, but if you're not, it could be full-blown hardware failure down the line.

If your BIOS has a temperature monitor, or SpeedFan says you have really hot temperatures, that might be a cause of this.  In any case, some compressed air to your vents (while the system is off) might help.  A longer-term solution might be to try out a cooling pad to see if that makes a difference, or have a laptop repair guy help you clean out the heat sinks.  Hopefully you will have someone who can help you out for cheap or for free and this is the only problem.

If driver updates and adequate cooling aren't helping, you could try a reformat, but if the problem is a hardware failure, you're better off getting a new lappy.  Either way, backing up your stuff should be a priority if driver updates and adequate cooling don't help.

Edit:
Some people on the net suggest running some hard drive diagnostic tools.  If your hard drive is going bad, getting and installing a new one isn't too hard.

Props Slack.

It's weird. I stopped using Firefox (where I ran into the file) and it seems okay...crossing fingers. AMAZINGLY it didn't freeze up when I was moving files. the weirdest thing was, the USB wasn't recognizing at first until I rebooted another time.

But yeah, I had been using a fan cuz it did get hot and I just noticed the games I played - the graphics got slower and slower.

Maybe analyzing the file stored in the minidump folder with WinDbg can help you find the culprit... but Slack may be right : irql is a sign of hardware failure... (or fuckin' software update... but not in 2010 XD)

^ Yeah. So far so good. It has been just freezing up every three hours or so...It's just random. Not triggered by any media player / flash player. No blue screen. I'm contemplating reformatting...but everything seems normal. You'd think it'd be sluggish.

Thanks for the help a few days earlier Slack. Sorry I missed you in the IRC, my laptop was being worked  on in another room lol

Stupid question, but the "Empty Vault" option in AVG does actually delete everything that was in there right?

I still somehow think that it just means you let everything out again XD

Yeah, it deletes it.  I used to be somewhat worried about that wording as well, but there's a separate way to "restore" the files by right-clicking them.

Really though, it works just like "Empty Recycle Bin".  AVG probably just wanted to follow convention, but the fact is, when you're talking about a "vault" rather than a "recycle bin" metaphor, the verb "empty" has a slightly different meaning.  AVG probably should have chosen a better verb.

So I've been asked to create a database system using Oracle SQL developer for the backend and Apex as the front end interface. The system is on IMDB's Top 250 highest rated movies, where a user can log in, enter in a movie of their own as well as being able to store a list of movies they've seen before. Should also be able to search movies by actors, director, year etc. I figured before I even start drawing up schema's it's probably best to have a good design laid out first. Using normalisation up to the 3rd form, I think I've got it down to the following tables:

FILM
FILMID
Title
Year

ACTOR
ACTORID
Actor_Name

GENRE
GENREID
Genre_Name

DIRECTORS
DIRECTORID
Director_Name

USERS
USERSID
User_Name

The rest are intermediate tables linking certain tables together due to M:M relationships

FILM-TO-ACTOR
ID
FILMID
ACTORID

FILM-TO-GENRE
ID
FILMID
GENREID

FILM-TO-USER
ID
FILMID
USERID

I think director to film is a 1:M relationship (1 director can have many films associated with him, but 1 film can only have 1 director) so rather than a table it will just be linked with a foreign key.

It's a brief runthrough but if anyone could give me some indication I'm on the right track, then it would be very much appreciated :)

^ if a film always has max 1 director you could include the DIRECTORID in the FILM table. Otherwise it looks good to me.

Just got an iPod Nano... and I'm a complete noob with iTunes and such, so my question is: how do I get everything in the appropriate section?!

I mean, I heard it's supposed to go automatically, but everything ends up in the main "films" folder on the iPod. Secondly, I can't move the files from iTunes to for the right sections either...  :panic:

I'm not right in front of my comp right now so I'm not sure about the exact wordings, but I think I can help.

It's true you can't move the files between categories manually by drag-dropping, since under the iTunes system, they are actually just listings of the files and not the files themselves. This makes it possible for a single file to be listed in multiple places at once. (multiple playlists and such)

Instead, what you do is right-click the file, click "show info" and from there you can change it's category info. For a video, you go to the "Video" tab and then you can change the genre/category to things like "music video". You can also modify other tag data, give it an image/cover/screenshot, or change what name it sorts by. (so it sorts by a different name than it displays as)

Hope this helps.

The forum banner is covering up some of the text to the right, as seen in this screencap I made.
http://i45.tinypic.com/2gya848.jpg
I'm using Opera if that makes a difference.
Resolution 1024x768, same as it's been for years.

I tried the other themes but it's the same with those.
Sig gone. Tinypic is no more.

I might sound like captain obvious, but have you tried a simple page refresh?
I use Opera too and when I choose 1024x768, the width of the forum fits perfectly to the edge of the browser. I don't see the background borders on either side like you show in that screenshot which I'm thinking is because you're still using an older css that's still in cache perhaps.

How do i type in Japanese.  I installed a Japanese language pack for my Windows 7, even added a japanese keyboard, but I still don't know how to access it.

Note that in the following screenshots, the cursor is omitted, but you can still figure out what I'm pointing at if you think about it.

First, make sure you have your Language bar activated:

Second, switch to Japanese:

This can also be done via keyboard shortcut. (default is alt+shift to toggle between languages)

Thirdly, switch from alphanumeric (English) to hiragana or whatever:

This can also be done via keyboard shortcut. (default is alt+capslock to toggle between input types)

Make sure you're in the program you want to use Japanese in.  The system keeps track of which input language you're using for each window separately.
For more options, click on the "Show the language bar" menu option in step 2 above.

Then you can type in 日本語。
If you still need help using it, here's a guide for a previous version of the IME.
http://newton.uor.edu/Departments&Programs/AsianStudiesDept/Language/japanese_write.htm
If you follow the steps from #4 onwards, you should get it pretty quick.

The idea just occured to me here that I could probably score big marks from this Oracle database assignment if I include images retrieved from the database too. The images would only be movie posters taken from the web. I haven't attempted it yet but as a guideline, how would you go about it? Bearing in mind I'm using Oracle 11g and the information is displayed through an Apex application. Do I just create a new column in an existing table with an Image datatype and the values refer to the file location of an image? Or is it more complex than that?

There's a way to put the phone into recovery mode so that it's recognized as a new phone.
Here's a page with detailed instructions:
http://www.tipb.com/2009/01/29/iphone-101-put-iphone-recovery-mode/

Or if you're too lazy to click:
1. plug in to computer
2. power off the phone
3. hold home button until recovery mode kicks in

Additionally, you may want to check out
http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/06/recovery-mode-and-dfu-mode/
for some extra info.
