Yo, ppl, I have a question here.

My 2 hard drives, which I thought were done, are now up and running as of tonite, meaning that my own comp has life again.
The thing is, both hdd's were clicking, and one of them I thought was through after a recent power outage.

Now, what I did tonite was set everything back up, mobo, psu, etc.
Plugged one hdd in, got a few clicks when it sat the normal way, but I put it on its side, and to my surprise it was recognized and the comp booted up.
Samething happened with my other hdd, so both are now on their sides and working.

The question is, how and why their working now on their sides, when they were both giving off clicks, which usually means a hdd is going bad.

I'm very curious about this, so any info that can be shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, now I have just 1 other question.

How do I merge space from a deleted partition back with the rest of a hdd and not lose any data?

It can be the mechanism that lifts the head from the disk is having problems and putting them on the side helps to start.
Also you could have just tapped the disk hard enough to loosen the heads if they where stuck.

That I have never tried, you can try re-creating the partition table by 'directly' editing the table on the disk (there are tools for that)
Try this search:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=recreate+deleted+partition

First things first: backup your data!

A freeware app you could try for that would be megui, but it does need the .NET framework to run properly.

I think another one would be SUPER, if I remember right.

Just google for them.

Acronis Disc Director could do that.
It's really a great tool. You could do alot to your hdd/partition table without any data loss.

Hi! I'm not sure if this question should go here, but I don't quite know where else to put it.

I want to get updates to the forum through RSS, but when I use the feed link "http://forum.jphip.com/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml" in google reader, it only updates every hour (at xx:35 to be exact) and it only shows 5 thread updates. And if I put it in as a live bookmark in my firefox bookmarks, it again only shows 5 threads at a time.

Is there anyway to get more than 5 threads showing (or in the case of google reader, get it to actually update as new threads are posted rather than only once an hour)?

I'm not sure. I have the same behavior from mine. At least with Firefox you can manually refresh it. You might be able to set a shorter refresh time with Google Reader.

My windows network thingy in the status bar has been showing "Acquiring network address" for the last couple days not. It hasn't impaired operability at all, but it's a little annoying. Any clues to what's going on?

Only the one. It seems to have gone away on its own this morning anyway.

^ Windows (any network software actually) will keep using its IP number during the lease time, or even after until it accures a new one. Depending on the lease time, XP starts to (re-)request the number at about 75% thru.
If you want to know your current lease time, type 'ipconfig /all' in a command window end look for 'Lease obtained' and 'Lease expires'

It's back again.

  Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : February 15, 2008 8:39:39 PM
  Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : February 21, 2008 11:21:45 PM

Apparently, the Nintendo Wifi USB Connector counts as a second network card. It goes away when I unplug it. I can just leave it unplugged and plug it in when I go on the Wii (and I'm away from the PC anyway...)

means you can't connect to the tracker. If it's not a public tracker maybe you could sign-in, re-dl the torrent file, and see if that works.

If it is public maybe the tracker is down?

Or they banned you  I don't know if the error would be the same for that.

That tracker is probably (temporarily) down. The web front end may still be up but the tracker is a separate 'program' and might be running on an entirely different server. If there's a forum for that tracker try to find out if other users have the same problem.

My laptop is having trouble recognizing USB devices such as my Mouse and Mp3 Player. The mouse just suddenly was no longer recognized one day, and its never recognized the Mp3 player, though both do get power when plugged into any of the USB ports.

What I get is a Found New Hardware Wizard "If your hardware came with an installation CD or floppy disk, insert it now" message. However, being its a Mouse, it didnt come with anything else.

I've simply adjusted to the problem by just using the laptop touchpad but recently my animation professor suggested that using an actual mouse would be easier and less time-consuming. I'm not very knowledgeable about computers (more than the average person but not by much), I've checked Windows Update but got nothing.

Any ideas?

- You have fully shutdown and the rebooted your system at least once lately?
- You have checked your system for virusses/spyware/etc.?

If it doesn't see a standard USB mouse as mouse, something is wrong with the driver database, or something is interfering with the whole system.
