Chapter 87 The black-haired girl sat in her bed staring out the window. She slowly thought of the events that had happened recently. She smiled to herself, thinking of the girl she was in love with, and the warmth of her lips. Everything just seemed so perfect now…
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
“Come in!” the patient yelled, expecting to see the face she had missed overnight.
A light-brown haired girl walked in, smiling a little. She was wearing a pastel pink hoodie over a white t-shirt with jeans. There was a thick winter coat slung over her arms. The patient’s grin faltered.
“Oh, it’s just you, Eririn,” she pouted.
“Hey, don’t give me any of that,” the turtle scolded. “
Especially after I took the trouble of texting my paranoid girlfriend who kept on insisting on picking me up this morning…” Reina still wasn’t so fond of Sayumi.
“Well, I was expecting Risa-chan to walk in so obviously, I’m disappointed,” Sayumi said, matter-of-factly.
“I don’t know why I always put up with that attitude of yours, Sayu…” Eri sighed, standing right by the younger girl’s bed. “And that’s exactly why I’m here today.”
“… It must be something important,” the bunny smiled, “considering you got to me this morning even before Junjun.”
“Important enough to affect someone’s life,” Eri spoke seriously. “I’ll be straightforward with you, Sayumi. What you did in front of Ai a couple days ago was completely unnecessary.”
“You mean the kiss?” the younger girl giggled. “How was it unnecessary? All I did was kiss my girlfriend. You do it all the time, don’t you?”
“Not in front of Reina’s ex-girlfriend!” Eri yelled. Just the thought of doing such a thing in front of the sweet Mitsui Aika made her feel terrible inside; it would break the little girl. “How would you feel if someone kissed your ex right in front of you?”
“… That will never happen,” Sayumi said in a low voice, her eyes getting darker. “Because Risa-chan will never leave me in the first place.”
“Do you honestly think Risa is in love with you?”
“She’s stuck in the past!” the patient yelled. “But we’re together now. With time, she’ll learn to love me.”
“Open your eyes and face reality!” Eri shouted. “Sayumi, loving someone sometimes means that you have to let them go and do what makes them happy.”
“Only you would think that,” the bunny scoffed. “You’ve always been so weak, Eri, with no self-resolution.”
“It’s not just me; look around!” Eri yelled again in a more pleading tone. “Ai let her feelings go because Risa made the choice to stay with you, out of guilt. Junjun watches you flirt with Risa everyday but doesn’t do anything about it because she loves you! Even I let so many things go because of you!”
“You?”
Eri paused. She bit down on her bottom lip as past memories flood into her head. She closed her eyes for a while and breathed slowly to calm herself down.
“Ever since we were little, I gave up so many things for you,” she said shakily. “Because you were my only cousin, and I was the older one, I had to do whatever
you wanted. I learned the meaning of the word ‘sacrifice’ when I was still just a baby because
you were born after a year! I gave up the smallest things like toys as well as the more vital things like my first love!”
“Your first love?” Sayumi said, letting out a small laugh.
Eri gasped, realizing what she had just said. She had spoken too much; she had lost control over her anger and frustration towards her cousin that she uttered her deepest secret…
But what did she care now? So what if Sayumi knew? Maybe it would make her see some sense in her own actions…
“I… was in love,” Eri said slowly, holding back her tears of misery, “…with Risa. Even though we were just kids, I truly loved her. I wanted to be with her and be more than a friend to her. But then I found out that you were also in love with her. And just like I had been doing for my entire life, I gave up on Risa for you. When you asked me to help you get together with Risa-chan, I said yes. Do you hear me, Sayumi? It hurt me so much but I still decided to help you! You never knew that, did you?”
“I knew.”
“What?” Eri’s eyes widened in shock. Sayumi had known? She had known that Eri was in love with Risa when they were little?
“Of course I knew,” the younger girl laughed scornfully. “How could I not know? It was so obvious from the way you always stared at Risa-chan with those sparkling eyes.”
“… You knew…” Eri breathed, the anger slowly filling her up, “… yet you still… asked for my help?”
“Well, you had already given up on her, right?” Sayumi said, rolling her eyes. “You never fight for what you want. Besides, it’s a good thing you gave up. Or else, the same thing that happened to Ai-chan might’ve happened to you, Eririn.”
“Ai-chan?” Eri whispered. “How does she come into this? What are you talking about?”
“… Nothing,” the bunny said, faltering a little from her slip of the tongue. “I was just referring to the way Ai-chan ended up hurting Risa-chan.”
“No, you weren’t,” Eri growled. “You know something that I don’t. Tell me what you know, Sayumi!”
“I don’t know any more than you do, Eririn,” Sayumi said, glaring at her cousin. “Stop overreacting.”
“You better say something right now, Sayumi,” Eri threatened. “I am
not in the best mood right now, and I’m
definitely not afraid to extend your stay in this hospital.”
“Ooh~ scary~” Sayumi giggled. She thought for a moment, then smiled. “Well, I guess I’ll let you in on this little secret, Eririn. Besides, you honestly don’t have the guts to do anything to hurt me… after all, I’m your one and only cousin, right?”
Eri didn’t say anything. She clenched her teeth and stared furiously at her cousin; this girl, who had hurt her so deliberately… who was hurting so many other people at the moment. And Eri had lived beneath her the whole time, attending to her every wish; it made her feel so blind and pathetic.
Sayumi smiled at her cousin’s distorted expression. She leaned in even closer and spoke in a low voice.
“The one who separated Ai-chan and Risa-chan,” Sayumi said, “… was
me.”
Eri’s eyes widened again. “… What are you talking about? Ai-chan was mad at Risa after what she said about her parents. Then she moved away; that’s how they got separated. It was just Ai-chan, getting angry—”
“You’re right, she was,” the black-haired girl interrupted, “which made everything so much easier for me. Think about it Eririn; do you think Ai-chan who was so close to Risa-chan could stay mad at her for that long?”
“… What the hell did you do, Sayumi?” the older girl growled.
“It was quite simple, really,” the bunny giggled, recalling what she had done. “All I had to do was go to Risa-chan and tell her that Ai-chan was very angry and never wanted to see her again. I did the same to Ai-chan too. They both believed me so easily… And when Ai-chan told me that she had to move again because of her mother’s job, and that she wanted to apologize to Risa-chan for yelling at her before she leaves, I said I would give the message to Risa-chan. A couple days later, I told her that Risa-chan still didn’t want to see her. That’s all.”
Eri’s breath hitched as she slowly comprehended what Sayumi had said. Mizuhara Ai was never mad at Risa. She wanted to apologize while Risa wanted to do the same. She wanted to stay friends with her, but Sayumi had stood in the way. Her very own cousin… how could she have not known? How could she have not known the lengths Sayumi would go to make Risa hers? And to think that she herself had helped her all these years to get Risa…
“No…” Eri breathed. She slid down to the floor as her legs weakened. “How… how could you…”
“Unlike you, Eririn,” Sayumi said, her eyes darkening, “I fight for what I want. I do whatever it takes to get what’s mine.”
“You hurt both of them!” Eri screamed, finally breaking down. “Ai-chan never got to know how sorry Risa was! Risa-chan got into a traffic accident and even forgot Ai-chan’s face! And you… it was you who did all that! And… I… I helped you…”
“You should be happy, Eririn,” Sayumi smiled. “You’re the best case right now. If you hadn’t given up on Risa-chan back then, I would’ve ripped you apart from her like I did with Ai-chan.”
“… I’m ashamed to call you my family,” Eri growled, tears of anger trickling down her cheeks.
“All’s fair in love and war,” the black-haired girl laughed. “Anybody who gets in the way of me and Risa-chan will suffer such consequences, just like Takahashi Ai. Although in her case, it was the second time and I had that unexpected factor of my own accident… so it was much easier.”
“Second time?” Eri gasped. “What… what are you talking about?”
“It seems like Risa-chan’s not the only one who lost their memory,” Sayumi laughed. “I’m actually surprised you haven’t noticed yet, even if she changed her family name.”
The patient pushed the blankets down to her ankles and slowly shifted in her bed so that her legs could touch the floor, in front of Eri. She leaned in to her cousin’s ear, who was staring at the floor, trying to figure out what she had just heard.
“Since I already told you
my secret,” Sayumi whispered, “I’ll let you in on someone else’s secret too. Do you want to know?”
“… It can’t be…”
“No, it can.” The black-haired girl smiled and spoke in a low, but clear voice. “Takahashi Ai…
is Mizuhara Ai.”
There was a loud slam of the door hitting the wall. Sayumi looked up, alarmed to see the person standing at the doorway. Eri slowly turned around to see who had dropped in on the conversation, her lips still trembling.
There was a girl with short brown hair, breathing heavily while her eyes grew wider and wider. It was obvious she had heard the entire conversation between the two cousins. Behind her was a tall, black-haired girl, who was staring at the floor, expressionless.
“Risa-chan!” Sayumi gasped. She quickly hid her shock with a smile. “H-how long were you standing there? You should’ve come in—”
“Be quiet…” the bean mumbled.
“How long were you listening, Risa-chan?” Sayumi said, still smiling but getting more nervous. She slowly stood up on her weak legs. “Look, I can explain—”
“I SAID SHUT UP!” Risa screamed. She glared right at the frightened bunny, fury blazing in her eyes. “If you say another word… I’ll
kill you.”
Sayumi gasped as she reached her hand back to balance herself on her bed. Eri exhaled sharply as she slowly turned her back on her friend and went back to staring at the tiled floor. Everything was over now. It had been her mistake in protecting someone who shouldn’t have been protected… And now, all the arrows finally pointed to the one person Eri had sacrificed so many things for.
“Ri-Risa-chan,” Sayumi laughed nervously. “Y-you’re acting scary… D-don’t look at me like th-that.”
“
I’m acting scary?” Risa shrilled. “No, Sayumi. In this room, there is nobody scarier than you, after what you’ve done.”
“Risa-chan—”
“I TRUSTED YOU!” the older girl screamed. “But you made me lose my most treasured thing
twice! … How could you…?”
Risa turned around and dashed out of the room. Sayumi started to panic as she limped on her feeble legs and stumbled out the door way, before Junjun caught her.
“Michishige-san, you can’t walk yet!”
“No, let me go!” Sayumi screamed, breaking out of the pianist’s hold. She stumbled down the hall way where Risa was running down. “Risa-chan… Risa-chan, don’t go! RISA-CHAN!”
Despite her intense desire to follow the bean, it was an obvious fact that the patient was too weak. She eventually fell on her knees and attempted to crawl but Junjun quickly stopped her before that by holding on to her shoulders.
“Shige-san, please!”
“Risa-chan… Risa-chan!”
Someone ran towards the room from the other side of the hallway with the fast clicking of heels. Junjun turned around and saw the younger member of High-Queen, her face alarmed. She had had a bad feeling about her girlfriend going to the hospital today, and had come to check up on her. She was obviously right.
The pianist immediately read the yankii’s mind and looked once towards Sayumi’s room to answer her question. Reina quickly ran through the doorway and found her girlfriend, kneeling by the bed while staring up at the ceiling. She crouched beside her and shook her a little by the shoulders.
“Eri!” Reina yelled, panicking. “Eri, what happened? What’s wrong?”
“It was Sayumi…” the older girl mumbled, her tears streaming down uncontrollably. “Everything was… Sayumi… and I…”
She finally broke down and started to cry out. She grabbed a fistful of her hair and shook her head while screaming as loud as she could. Everything had been caused by Sayumi: her first love, Risa’s loss, Junjun’s sacrifice, Ai-chan’s pain… and Eri had helped her in so many ways. She had given up so many things because of her, and what for? She felt tricked and deceived, yet so pathetic that she never realized.
Reina was still confused but she generally figured out what had happened. Obviously, Sayumi had done something very wrong to make her girlfriend like this. She quickly turned her lover around and embraced her. She gently patted her back as she shushed her as though she was a child. Eri put her arms around Reina’s waist and cried into her shoulders, still screaming out in frustration and resent.
“Michishige-san, hold yourself together!” Junjun’s voice echoed in the hallway. “Somebody help! Please, she fainted! Someone help!”
