Chapter 37 “But that can’t be right! I was sure I was winning!”
“Shige-san, I called ‘uno’ when I had one card left. Then I placed it with the right number, so I won.”
“But you didn’t even give me a chance to say ‘uno’!”
“That’s the whole point of the game!”
Sayumi put down her cards on the bed and crossed her arms. She puffed up her cheeks into a pout, just like a child. Junjun stared at this black-haired beauty for a while, then smiled.
The two girls were playing Uno while waiting for Risa and Eri to arrive at the hospital. Junjun had won twice already, and every time Sayumi realized the outcome of the game, she had complained and protested. Normally, one would already by annoyed by this. But to the panda, Sayumi’s tantrums and pouting seemed cute and charming in a way.
“Okay, Shige-san,” Junjun finally said. “We’ll play one more time, okay? Do your best now!”
Sayumi’s pout slowly transitioned into an excited smile. “Really?”
“Yup. I’ll shuffle the deck again.”
“Okay!” the younger girl exclaimed, clapping her hands.
“
How cute,” Junjun thought, chuckling to herself. “
She’s just like a child. I guess this is the part of her that attracts me to her…”
“Knock, knock!” Someone yelled by the door. Sayumi immediately turned her head and grinned.
“Eririn! Risa-chan!” the bunny exclaimed.
“
Well, I guess there’s no third round of Uno,” the panda thought.
“Hey, Sayu! Hey, Junjun!” the turtle greeted.
“You girls seem lively today,” the bean said.
The two friends walked in and sat down on the chairs lined up by the bed next to Junjun. Sayumi was practically bouncing in her bed as she held Risa’s hands, then Eri’s.
“You guys didn’t visit for such a long time!” she accused. “I was starting to think maybe you guys forgot about me…”
“How could we forget about you, Sayu?” Risa replied.
“No offense, but your voice is kind of hard to forget,” Eri teased.
“Ha-ha,” Sayumi said sarcastically, sticking out her tongue. Eri stuck out her tongue as well.
“You know that I’m going to be released from the hospital soon,” Sayumi reminded. “We’re all going to hang out together, right?”
“Of course,” Risa answered. “Junjun, you should come along too! Eri and I’ll treat you; after all, you’ve taken care of Sayu so well while we couldn’t visit.”
“I guess I won’t turn down a good meal then,” the panda replied. “Anything spicy is good, okay?”
“Don’t even attempt to satisfy her taste, Risa-chan,” Sayumi said, frowning. “She doesn’t think any food in the world is spicy! Anything that burns our tongue is just a mild zest to this girl.”
“Hey, those chicken wings really
weren’t spicy!” Junjun complained. “They were way below my expectations!”
“I drank a gallon of water because of those wings!” Sayumi argued. “I was going back and forth from the bathroom all night!”
“Alright guys, we get the point,” Eri laughed. “Junjun likes spicy food; got it.”
“So what are you guys up to these days? Anything exciting happen lately?” Sayumi asked.
“Oh, we had a birthday party for Ai-chan yesterday,” Eri answered. “You know, the leader of High-Queen?”
“Yeah, I remember,” Sayumi said. “Was it fun, Risa-chan?”
“Huh? Oh, yeah… it was… um, fun…” Risa mumbled.
She started the remember the night before again; the way Ai had kissed her, the way she had touched her thighs, the way she had whispered in her ears… The idol was half-dead in the morning; she had a massive headache from drinking too much. But she and Reina had still left the house early in the morning for vocal training. Risa didn’t have a chance to talk to her about their interaction, so the bean had decided to bring it up at DFA this afternoon. There was a meeting about High-Queen’s next single, now that promotions for “Everyday Everwhere” was over.
But Risa had felt uneasy the entire night and day. Various questions had roamed through her mind. Why did Ai kiss her? Did she know what she was doing? Was she still drunk during that time? Where does this leave the two of them…?
While Risa was being tortured by having no answers to any of these inquiries, Eri did not have anything weighing in her mind. She didn’t remember anything from when she was drunk; when she woke up in the morning, the turtle was her usual cheerful self while Reina didn’t say a word and refused to meet eyes with anybody. Risa had noticed how awkward Reina was acting in the morning, so she deduced that something probably happened between her and Eri. But her friend seemed perfectly happy and fine, so the bean didn’t think too much about it.
“Takahashi Ai is very pretty…” Sayumi said in a low voice, smiling.
“Yeah, she is,” Eri agreed. “Reina-chan is pretty too, you know.”
“Yes, her too…” Sayumi mumbled. Then, she clasped her hands together and opened her eyes widely, appearing like an angel. “When I’m released, can you take me to DFA, please? I really want to see what it’s like there. Please, Risa-chan? Please, Eririn?”
“I don’t see why we can’t,” Eri replied.
“Yeah, I guess it’s okay…” Risa agreed.
“Yay! Thank you so much, guys!” Sayumi held out her arms to hug her two friends.
“No problem,” Eri said, grinning. “But now we have to leave. We have a meeting for High-Queen’s next single.”
“Aw, so soon?” The bunny pouted.
“Yeah,” Risa said. “Don’t worry; we’ll definitely hang out when you get released, okay?”
“Okay.” Sayumi nodded.
“Junjun, you should also come with us to DFA next time,” Risa offered.
“I think I’ll do that,” the panda replied.
“Okay, we really have to leave now,” Eri said. “Bye, Sayu. Bye, Jun.”
“See you!”
“Bye.”
Risa and Eri left the room and closed the door. Sayumi started to fumble around with the Uno cards laid out on her bed. Her lips curved into a small smile.
“Junjun,” she started, “will you do me a favor?”
“Sure. Anything, Shige-san,” Junjun answered, excitedly.
“Anything?”
“Yes, anything.”
“Great!” Sayumi exclaimed, her smile growing bigger. “Here’s what you need to do…”
