Chapter 43 “So this is High-Queen’s recording studio,” Risa announced. “I guess you can say we really do our ‘stuff’ here.”
“Wow, this is really cool,” Sayumi remarked, looking around the small soundproof room. “So Takahashi-san, you and Tanaka-san sing together here?”
“Yes, we do,” Ai replied, smiling. “It’s a meaningful place for us.”
Risa was taking Sayumi and Junjun around the DFA building for a little tour. Ai was trailing behind with Junjun while Sayumi was plastered on to her friend.
“Risa-chan!” Sayumi exclaimed, linking her arms with the bean. “Show me more places!”
The bunny quickly dragged Risa and leaned on her shoulders. The older girl didn’t seem to mind too much; after all, Sayumi was just like a little sister to her. But she was completely unaware of the two pairs of eyes glaring at her from behind.
“Risa-chan,” Sayumi started, “I’m so excited to be here with you like this. It’s good to be free.” She wrapped her arms around Risa’s neck to give her a quick hug and a peck on her cheek.
Junjun stopped dead in her tracks. She clenched her fists and gritted her teeth. If she stayed, she felt as though she would explode. So the panda made the smart choice of turning around and briskly walking away.
“Junjun, where are you going?” Risa asked, trying to turn around while being completely immobilized by Sayumi’s clinging.
“I’m just… going to the bathroom,” Junjun mumbled.
“Are you feeling okay?” Risa questioned, concerned. “Do you want me to come with you?”
At that moment, Junjun caught a glance of Sayumi’s expression from next to Risa. Her dark eyes were cold like onyx in contrast to her pale, white skin. Her lips curved down as she narrowed her eyes. Junjun bit down on her bottom lip and smiled a little.
“It’s okay, I’ll be fine,” she answered in a low whisper.
With that, she quickly walked away from the small tour group. She managed to find the bathroom and quickly dashed in. She immediately turned the faucet and splashed her face with cold water. Her face distorted into a pained expression.
“
Damn it,” she thought. “
It hurts… so much…”
“You don’t seem like you’ll be fine,” a voice whispered from behind.
The Chinese pianist looked up to see Ai, through the mirror, standing behind her. She quickly composed her face and smiled.
“I’m just very tired,” Junjun laughed shakily. “You don’t have to worry, Takahashi-san.”
“I have a question for you,” Ai said. “… What is Michishige Sayumi to you?”
“
This girl is sharp. But she doesn’t seem like the type to use information against someone…” Junjun thought. “If I answer, will you answer my question?”
“… Yes,” Ai agreed.
“Shige-san is my all,” Junjun declared without hesitation. “I thought it was just a crush at first but… I really love her. I don’t know why but I can’t stop this feeling. I guess it’s just my fate.”
“
What a sad fate, only to watch your loved one from afar,” Ai thought as she nodded. “
Well, I guess I’m not the one to talk, since I’m in the same situation…”
“So my question,” Junjun started. “Who are you to Shige-san? And Gaki-san and Kame-san?”
“You’re mentioning all of them,” Ai said, laughing softly. “How much do you know, Jun-san? How much did Michishige-san tell you in order to make you pull out Risa so we can have a private conversation?”
“So you figured it out,” Junjun answered, smiling weakly. “Well, Shige-san told me that you would catch on.”
“How much do you know, Jun-san?” Ai questioned again.
“Not much, actually,” Junjun answered, leaning on the sink as she turned around. “Shige-san told me Gaki-san, Kame-san, and she had personal relations with you. She told me there was something private she needed to speak to you about, so I had to get everybody away from you. Tanaka-san made my job easier. That’s all I know.”
“You didn’t ask for more information?” Ai asked, surprised.
“If Shige-san doesn’t want me to know, I’m okay with not knowing,” Junjun claimed, smiling a little. “Of course, I’d like more information. But I also know Shige-san isn’t comfortable with telling me everything. And that’s fine with me… because I love her unconditionally.”
“Unconditionally?” Ai questioned. “So even if Michishige-san isn’t the girl you think she is… you’ll still do whatever she tells you to do?”
“Yes,” Junjun answered easily. “That’s the definition of unconditional, no?”
“
This girl is strong,” Ai thought. “
But Sayumin’s selfishness will hurt her one day.”
“As you can see, I’m the most unimportant outsider in your story,” Junjun said, smiling. “I can’t help you.”
“I didn’t talk to you, expecting you to help or anything,” Ai denied. “I guess I was just… curious.”
“About what?”
“About you.” The leader smiled genuinely. “You’re a good person, Jun-san. Please continue to take care of Michishige-san.”
“I’ll do that even without you asking,” the panda said, also smiling.
“
Her strength and patience will soon be her weakness… And Jun-san knows that,” Ai thought. “
But I won’t let that happen. I won’t let my patience become a weakness…”
