Chapter 10 “Kameha, are you listening to me?”
“Huh? What?”
Eri blinked a couple times and turned her eyes to her friend, who had waved her hand in front of the turtle’s face to get her attention.
“I said, thanks for the cake!” Risa repeated in an annoyed tone. “Have you been listening to anything I said for the past 10 minutes?”
“Uh... did it involve the cake?” Eri guessed, smiling nervously.
“Yeah, for the past 30 seconds,” Risa said flatly. “What are you thinking about?”
The turtle sighed as she hugged her knees to her chest. She was curled up on her sofa, leaving the cake she had bought from Café Buono untouched on the coffee table. Risa was sitting on the floor while facing her friend, fully enjoying the sweetness of her own share of the dessert.
“Just… stuff,” Eri answered vaguely, eliciting an unsatisfied grunt from her friend.
“That doesn’t give me much,” the bean complained. “Tell me, what’s going on? Did something happen between you and that Reina girl?”
“Well…” the turtle hesitated. “We almost kissed.”
“… EHHH?”
Risa’s eyes almost popped out of her head as she dropped her fork onto the floor. Eri blushed as she eyed the dropped utensil. Catching the drift, the bean quickly picked up her fork and grabbed a napkin from the table to wipe off the blob of cream that had gotten on the floor.
“You don’t need to be that surprised,” Eri mumbled. “It’s not like we actually did kiss.”
“But you said ‘almost’!” Risa yelled, obviously overreacting. “Tell me everything that happened!”
And so, the turtle went on to talk about Café Buono’s Best Couple Contest, and how she and Reina had entered. She talked briefly about the first and second round, but she mostly informed the bean about the last round. She told her how she was going to kiss the kitty, but then changed her mind for a good reason.
“You made the right choice,” Risa commented, taking some more cake into her mouth after wiping her fork clean. “That was a pretty gentlemanly thing to do, Kameha.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment, seeing the situation I’m in now,” Eri grumbled.
She then went on to talk about how Reina had teased her before she left. Risa dropped her fork one more time which triggered a repetition of the turtle’s glare, and the bean having to clean the floor again.
“That’s really…” Risa started, unable to get a correct adjective, “unexpected.”
“That doesn’t even cover it,” Eri sighed, tightly bounding her legs in her arms.
“Well, she’s definitely got you wrapped around her fingers,” the bean chuckled. “I don’t think she’s just playing with you, though. She wouldn’t get that close with you if she’s not serious enough.”
“Not in Reina’s case,” Eri disagreed, shaking her head. “She can be really mysterious, you know? She can read my mind like a book but I can never understand her…”
“That’s just you being an aho, Kameha.”
“Thanks, Risa-chan, that makes me feel so much better.”
Eri rolled her eyes and stuck out her tongue at the grinning bean. Risa shoved the last piece of cake into her mouth and licked her fork clean before putting it down. She let out a satisfied sigh as she leaned back a little to balance on her two hands.
“I’m sorry, Kameha, but I really don’t know what to say to you,” she said, shrugging. “I’ve never met the girl, so I can’t really agree or disagree with your point. The best advice I can give you is—”
“To tell the truth,” Eri finished, grumbling. “I know, I know…”
“If you know, then do what you think is best!” Risa encouraged. “I mean, if you have such strong feelings for her, than there must be something about you that she likes, considering she’s not ignoring your texts or anything.”
“I guess you’re right…” Eri sighed, still worried. “I’ll try to find the right time… or something.”
“Hey, it’s your business.”
Risa stretched her body before she picked up her empty plate and got up. She walked to the kitchen and placed it in the sink as she turned the faucet.
“You can just leave it,” Eri called before the bean could wet her hands. “I’ll wash it with my breakfast dishes tomorrow.”
“Oh, okay.”
Risa quickly obliged as she turned the water off and returned to the living room. She pounced on the sofa and hugged a cushion to her chest as she leaned back on one armrest while facing the turtle.
“So,” Eri started, “what did you do after I left school today?”
“Nothing too interesting,” the bean yawned. “I cleaned the classroom, had a drink with Takahashi-sensei, and I stopped by at the bookstore because—”
“Wait, what?” the turtle interrupted, blinking furiously. “Did you just say you had a drink with Takahashi-sensei?”
“Uh… yeah,” Risa answered, raising her eyebrow at her friend’s peculiar reaction. “She bought me a soda while she drank coffee… Is there something wrong that?”
“No, nothing’s wrong,” Eri quickly said. “It’s just… I mean… I thought you hated Takahashi-sensei?”
“I don’t hate Sensei!” the bean denied, her voice getting a little louder. She cleared her throat and started again. “I mean, I was a little doubtful at first, I guess… But I talked to her a little today. She seems like a good person.”
The process of that day’s afternoon replayed in the bean’s head. The way Takahashi-sensei had bought her the drink, the way she had smiled, the way she had stroked her hair…
Why would she say she’s a bad person? Risa thought.
What could she have done that was so terrible? But her hands were too warm… She’s definitely not a bad person. “Do I see the judgmental Risa-chan improving as a human?” Eri giggled.
“Since when do you base your facts on humanity?”
“Or maybe I’m just seeing an average girl in love~” the turtle cooed. “That’s a simpler explanation.”
“Are you kidding me?” Risa yelled, slightly blushing. “There’s no way I could be in love with Sensei! I would know if I was, and I’m not.”
“How would you know?” Eri challenged, grinning. “You’ve never been in love before. Even when other kids had crushes on you back in elementary school, you didn’t even take one glance at them.”
“I think I still know myself well enough, Kameha,” Risa shot back, rolling her eyes. “Look, it’s nothing like that. I’m just more approving of Sensei; that’s all.”
“Uh-huh~” the turtle smirked. “I understand~”
“You’re hopeless,” Risa groaned.
As Eri continued to giggle and quietly tease her friend, the bean could only think about the riddle in her head.
What makes a good person ‘good’?
And what makes a bad person so ‘bad’…?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Short, but necessary, I think.
