Chapter 20Maasa began her long walk back to her apartment, which was unfortunately across town, as she looked around at the burnt stores around town. It seemed unusual for her to not notice most were places that she liked. As she got to the final block, a familiar person was around the corner, and she was gleeful that she was still there.
“Maa-chan, where were you?” She asked with a familiar high pitch.
“I was hanging out with the gang again.” Maasa said in a soft voice.
“MAA~ you got to stop, you have me now, I know they are your best friends but...” She paused for a bit.
“I know, it will be the last time.” Maasa looked around before asking the burning question.
“What happened, Momo-chan?” She took a deep breath before explaining.
Maasa felt compelled that the damage was caused by a dark figure who destroyed the are with its fireball and burning all the store down in its path. Momo showed the only place that was still standing because she was there and the only damage was the freezer. Maasa felt something weird inside and squatted down to thank Momo for being safe while she was away.
At that moment, there was a shaking of the earth, and Maasa grabbed the peach over to a safe place as it slowly went back into a standstill. They both ran back into the apartment and picked up the books that fell from the shelf. As they finished, an aftershock came and knocked both of them down to the ground. Then, both blacked out when the shelf fell upon them.
Sayu came running from the lab with a long piece of paper filled with coding, she saw the disheveled kitty, and took a seat next to her. Sayu circled the paper with a red pen.
“Very simple. The quake and aftershocks have opened up a hole and the black matter has become stronger.” Sayu explained.
Aika and Tomo came into the room and saw Sayu with a concerned look on her face. As she explained it to them, Reina looked outside to the quiet streets. Then, all of sudden a scream came from outside and a bright flash blinded everyone. After a few minutes, everyone saw the damage on the street as it seemed it was peeled back.
“Sayu-chan, what happened?” Tomo asked as they picked themselves off the floor.
“I don't know.” Sayu rubbed her eyes and saw the road one more time before walking back into the lab.
The other three walked over to their neighbors and knocked down the door to Saki and Miya's room as they held each other on the ground. The duo followed the group back to their apartment and sat on the couch as they recovered from the trauma of the earthquake. Reina grew curious about the road splitting and ran down to the lobby.
“Wow, this is interesting.” Reina saw an orange liquid flowing in the fissure.
Reina ran along the fissure and bang into an older person as he wiped himself off and nodded his head to the kitty. Then, two young women came running up to her and dragged her into the alleyway as the men came running by. They took her into the abandoned room and looked around their surroundings before explaining their situation.
“You are the store people, why did you guys trap me?” They extended their arms and the black tar was slowly consuming them.
“Ah this is bad. Follow me.” Reina had stopped time again as they ran back to the apartment building.
Reina began to notice the population were coming from the liquid and were becoming strengthen by its goo. She ran all the way back to Sayu, who was mentally stumped by the recent events. Sayu saw the two and looked at their arms. Sayu took out a spray bottle and squirted the medicine onto their skin, the black ooze fell off into a bag, and Sayu experimented in front of them.
“Thank you.” Both bowed to the group as they were given a piece of paper.
“Write your names.” Sayu said in a stern voice.
The duo wrote down the information and gave it off to Sayu, Tomo walked over with glasses of apple juice, and the two sat down on the chairs in the kitchen. Reina followed Sayu down to the lab and leaving the group upstairs. One of the two women acknowledged the little girl catching Aika's attention.
“Whose child is this?” The woman asked.
“I am her caregiver, her mother was killed months ago and she was left in my care.” Aika explained.
“I see, by the way I am Takahashi Ai and this is my roommate, Niigaki Risa, we are workers at the nearby store. I never had formally introduce myself so it would be nice to learn as we are stuck together.” Ai took a bow followed by her mate.
“I am Mitsui Aika and this is Tomo, that is Saki and Miya who live down the hall, and the other two are Sayu and Reina, they are the people who are looking into the recent developments.” Mittsi explained as Reina came out and bowed to the people.
“You look cute.” Ai mumbled as Aika closed her fist.
“Aika is jealous.” Miya pointed out and caught the glaring anger in her eyes.
“Sorry, I always like cute people, reason why Niiigaki has been my roommate, even though she is a clean freak and I like to keep it a certain way.” Ai suddenly got interrupted by Sayu who was panting from her run.
“Usagi-chan? Why do you have to be here?” Niigaki rolled her eyes back as Sayu kneed her forehead in frustration.
“Mame-chan always got to be the thorn, even though she never was accepted her true love.” Sayu stung back and Risa charged toward the bunny making a fight between the two.
“Sayu, please explain before you take off her head.” Reina pulled her back and took the paper from her.
“Human eco-matter?” Reina thought for a while and then it hit her.
“Poop? They had poop on their arms.” Reina began to laugh relentlessly as Sayu ran through the paper and pointed out the effective material.
“It seems we are fighting a super power that no other can destroy. We need to start preparing for the coming of the queen or king of their planet.” Sayu explained as Risa just ignored the situation.
“So, what shall we do?” Risa asked as she kept her eye contact from Sayu.
“We have to wait.” Sayu walked back with her head down and shaking her head.
“We are facing the end of the world.” All felt dejected with no answer within sight.
