[7/29/11 2:25:19 AM] Bee: no pressure >__>

As my beloved stalker Bee has informed me, 'tis my 100th post on this thread. And so, we shall celebrate it in the most fitting way possible- MikiEri love/abuse!

Question: Why did Eri have that blow-up doll?

All throughout the meeting, Miki was struggling to pay attention. She nodded at appropriate times and pretended to take notes. The discussion on in-hospital mortality rates (or the kill count, as she privately called it) was boring her to tears and she actually drew a small coffin in lieu of notes.

Later, Eri complimented her on her masterpiece and stated that it perhaps the wheels needed to be rounder to make it look more like a car. The temptation to send her intern out for porn and sex toys as punishment for her impudence was slightly allayed by the fact that she had way too much porn for a well-adjusted person to have any business owning.

Thankfully, Fujimoto Miki was far from being well-adjusted. Now, the question was where to hide her new blow-up doll where Aya can’t find it.

Enjoy the crack! Might not have much of it in the upcoming chapter (which I promise will happen soon).

I thought I'd do some comment replies here, but it's been several months since I last updated, so I guess I'll just thank everyone for their patience. Chapter 10 is actually already written- working on chap 11 right now.

Chapter 10: Heart-to-Hearts

“So a bacteria walked into a bar and the bartender said: 'We don't serve bacteria in this place.' The bacteria said, 'But I work here- I'm staph.'” Eri laughed, looking around the operating table. “Get it? I’m ‘staph’,” she repeated with a giggle.

Perhaps it was because Eri couldn’t quite gauge if everyone were as amused as she was due to the surgical masks covering their pained expressions, but just as she was about to launch into her next atrocious gag, Ai stepped on her foot, making her recoil in pain.

The automatic door slid open with a soft swoosh and a freshly-scrubbed Miki stepped into the operating theatre. She gave the surgical team a friendly nod and some of them swore she was smirking under her mask. Somehow, they suspected Fujimoto had found another way to torment them all even in her absence via her sweet, but clueless intern.

“Let’s get started, shall we?” Miki said brightly, confirming everyone’s suspicion with her overly cheerful mood. “Kamei, make the incision.”

“Hai!” Eri’s eyes shone with delight at the opportunity. A nurse handed her the steel #10 blade and she held it with a steady hand. The weight of the scalpel in her grasp sharpened every sense in her body and she took a deep breath, her entire concentration on the tip of the blade pressed into the patient’s abdomen.

‘When did she get so good without me realising?’ Ai thought with no small wonder, regarding the usually carefree Eri now fully absorbed in her task with an intense look on her face.

Fistula.” Eri muttered by way of a warning and suddenly an almost overwhelming foul smell from the diseased portions of the patient’s bowels permeated the air, causing one or two nurses to gag. Now Ai was thankful to Miki for force-feeding her that disgusting hangover cure earlier. It made this experience slightly more bearable, but no less nauseating.

“Takahashi,” Miki addressed her quietly. “Have you encountered a patient with Crohn’s before?”

Ai was as surprised with the sudden question as she was with the gentle and professional tone Miki was querying her with. “Yes, intestinal blockage due to severe inflammation- a portion of the small bowel was surgically removed.”

“What we have here now are multiple blockages or strictures, in both the small and large bowels, the diseased portions almost 4 feet in total. What would you recommend?”

Strictureplasty- widening the blocked intestines instead of cutting it out. Reduces the risk of short bowel syndrome.”

“Good- I assume you’ve performed the procedure with Dr. Yoshizawa. We’ll do it in tandem at all the affected areas and close this guy up quickly- I don’t want to spend any more time than I have to breathing in this shit.”

Eri chortled, regretting it almost immediately when she forgot to continue breathing through her mouth.

-----

The cafeteria was relatively quiet, but far from peaceful.

In a quiet corner, Yossi was sitting stoically at the table between Maki and Reina who were looking everywhere except at each other.

“Are you sleeping together?” Yossi asked suddenly, breaking the silence.

“No.”
“Yes.”

“But not in a sex way!” Reina clarified quickly.

“Not in a- sex way,” Maki repeated in a small voice and blushed slightly, turning away from her intern.

Reina had never wanted to squeal ‘kawaii!’ as much as she did right now, and resisted the urge to reach across the table to pat Maki’s tousled head. She made do with shovelling in her donburi as fast as she could without choking.

Yossi met Maki’s gaze and shot her a ‘Really? Your intern? You’re disregarding work protocol for this?’ look. Maki responded with a blank ‘I don’t read minds’ shrug.

“So, that’s great.” Yossi stood up abruptly.  “Now that’s settled, I’ll need to report in to work-“ She glanced at her watch with a grimace, “-an hour late.”

“Sorry we kept you, Yossi.” Maki looked genuinely contrite and Reina dipped her head in a quick apologetic bow. They turned back to their brunch in awkward silence as Yossi left the table.

Yossi spotted Rika and Aya tucked in the far corner of the hall. The neuro residents were in the middle of a hushed and angry exchange of words, their coffees cold and untouched in front of them. Rika staring down Aya with a determined expression which was returned with a stubborn glower.

Contemplating the palpable tension between the two with mild trepidation, Yossi had an internal debate on whether to interject. Rika had this look on her face that Yossi knew well- someone, namely Aya, was about to either get smacked or throttled.

‘And once more into the fray,’ she thought as she greeted them, flinching as two sets of angry eyes glared at her intrusion. “Whoa- what’s wrong now?”

Rika and Aya turned back to glare at each other, communicating wordlessly through a  complex series of facial twitches, flaring nostrils and narrowing eyes- the very representation of immovable object, irresistable force

“Fine!” Aya gritted out suddenly, slapping the table’s surface in sheer irritation. “Later.”

Rika looked mildly triumphant, as she leaned back with her arms crossed. “Now.” The sooner Rika got Aya’s condition diagnosed, the better.

“No way.” Last thing Aya needed was to have her work performance questioned when news got out, and knowing Asa UH, the news would spread faster than crabs in a single bathroom brothel.

Yossi looked from one neurosurgeon to the other. “Are you sleeping together?” she asked wryly.

“What? No!”
“N- no! Yossi!”

Successfully replacing the previous tension with a new tension, it was Aya’s turn to study the other two as they stared at each other with bemused expressions- looking for all the world like deers caught in the proverbial headlight. Rika had overreacted and Yossi did not expect the response she got from her offhand joke.

With the attention off her due to the awkward deadlock between the two indefinitely erstwhile lovers, Aya took the opportunity to extricate herself, silently promising never to complain about her lack of a love life again.

-----

Yasuda nodded slowly, paying close attention to Risa as she was giving her report on the psych case she was supposed to evaluate for neurosurgical candidacy. A few psych residents shifted restlessly behind her, throwing curious glances at the surgical intern amongst them.

“…there was loss of bowel control. Following which, Hiro-san graffitied his room. Again.” Risa grimaced, remembering the stench as she helped restrain and sedate the hysterical patient. Thank god she didn’t have to clean him up or sterilize the room- she gained a whole new respect for the nurses since that incident.

“What did he draw?” Kei asked off-handedly, making additional annotations in her notebook before looking up at Risa expectantly.

Risa’s eyes went wide at that, scrambling through her notes, trying to remember as much as she could from the frenetic episode. “Uh, heeh? He- uh, wrote something. Ehh~ nandake?”

A giggle from the residents behind her made her look up to see a teasing gleam in Dr. Yasuda’s eyes. “Don’t worry, Gaki-san. We’re not ALL crazy up here in the Psych ward.” Kei gave Risa a peculiar wink that suggested otherwise.

Kei directed her gaggle of residents to continue on their rounds without her and led the surgical intern into her office. It was tastefully decorated, to Risa’s surprise. The mahogany desk was clearly the centerpiece of the room with neat clutter and some personal effects scattered on the surface. Risa peered at a photo frame and looked away quickly when she saw a selca of Kei winking at her.

“So, what do you think?” Kei asked, settling behind her desk and gesturing for Risa to sit.

“It’s um… very cute.”

“Pardon?”

“Oh! The patient-“ Risa backpedalled quickly. “Yes. I meant it’s quite acute. His condition.”

Kei gave the intern an amused look. “Good catch, bad pun. And thanks for the compliment. But yes, the patient’s condition seems to be worsening. Will you recommend him for full labwork?”

“I’m- not sure- his condition seems entirely psychological. We haven’t come across anything to indicate that it is caused by neurological reasons. Maybe if I could speak to his family to see if there’s anything they noticed?”

“Unfortunately the state is his family- he’s in a home for problematic youth. And therein lies our problem- permission and insurance,” Kei sighed as she tapped on the patient’s folder with her pen.

Risa contemplated that for a while before answering as politely as she could, hoping she wouldn’t come off too haughtily. “Well, we’re doctors, not administrators. We have to put the patient first before paperwork.”

Kei looked startled, before breaking into a wry smile. “Thanks for the reminder. I never thought that I’d hear my own words told back to me 4 years later from my intern’s intern.” Her smile dropped slightly as she considered her words. “I feel old. Oh god, I’ve become an administrator.”

“That’s not the case at all, Yasuda-san. I’ve seen your notes on Hiro-san, and you’ve really exhausted yourself finding the right treatment for him,” Risa declared fervently. “Don’t worry, I’ll find a way to get him fully diagnosed. Leave him to me!”

Risa bounded out of Yasuda’s office with all the hopeful energy and innocent motivation only a new doctor could muster, leaving Kei feeling even more ancient than ever.

She headdesked as soon as Risa skipped out of the room and reached for her phone to dial a number from memory without looking. “Rika-chaan~” she wailed as soon as the line connected. “Your intern made me feel old.”

“What happened?” Rika sounded amused.

“She told me that I should be a doctor, not an administrator and that I have to put the patient before paperwork.” Kei mock-whined as Rika laughed delightedly. “You’ve got one heck of a great doctor going on there.”

“Ah, sasuga oresama.”

Kei sat straight up in her chair, all playfulness gone out of her stance. “Ishikawa, are you drunk?” She glanced at her clock- it was barely past lunch. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m an asshole. That’s what’s wrong. Yossi found out I cheated on her.”

Kei paused, focusing on the background noises over on Rika’s end. “Are you at the Pulse?” she asked, upon hearing thumping music and high-pitched giggling.

“Yeap.”

“Hang on, I’ll come get you.”

“Don’t bother. Mikitty is on her way already. I’ll be fine, Kei-chan. Talk to you later, these nice oneechans are making me something to eat.”

Kei stared at the phone bemusedly, the last thing she heard before hanging up was Rika saying ‘come sit on my lap, I have a stick to keep you in place’.

-----

Miki glanced over at their usual corner in the strip club, catching a glimpse of Rika futilely trying to drink herself into a stupor. It was still too early for a show, so the club was empty save for Rika and some dancers who were pouring drinks for her.

“Irrashai, Miki-chan!” the buxomly mama-san greeted her warmly with a hug.

“Hi, mama. Long time no see.” The senior residents had made Pulse, the seedy strip joint a few blocks from the hospital, their favored watering hole since their student days.

“What’s wrong with Rika-chama?”

Miki shrugged as she made her way over to Rika. “I’unno. I guess I’ll find out.

She was immediately swamped by the cooing working girls who were sitting with Rika and she returned their affection with some well-placed groping, causing them to squeal and protest playfully. They fluttered off, leaving the two surgeons alone after extracting some promises to ‘play some more’ later.

Rika pushed the half-empty bottle of tequila over to Miki. “You better catch up quick.”

“Is this all you’ve had so far?” Miki asked. Rika nodded in affirmation. “You’re not even drunk yet, are you?”

“No. I have something to do during the graveyard shift later.”

Miki tossed back a shot with a grimace. “Ugh. Yeah- I’m on call for the emergency graveyard shift too.”

They drank in companionable silence, watching as the club workers prepared for the nights’ entertainment and debauchery.

“So… what’s up?”

“I think I need to tell Yossi about us.”

“Hah? Whut?”

“I think I kinda told Yossi I cheated on her today. Well, I didn’t really say it, but I think she knew. But she didn’t know with whom.” Rika dropped her head onto the table with a groan.

“What the hell are you talking about, Ishikawa?”

“We were having problems even before, you know, you and I… slept together. I guess that was the tipping point for me.”

Miki scrunched her forehead in confusion. “What’s the problem with that? And we haven’t really slept together much- I don’t remember waking up with you unless you mean in the on call room when we’re snoozing during breaks.”

“Sleeping together, as in we had sex, Mikitty.”

“What? We didn’t sex together.”

“Yes, we did. You told me so, and there… there was a video.”

“I told you so? I tell people all sorts of lies that aren’t true- there was a what?!” Miki exclaimed loudly, her face a mixture between shock and glee.

“Remember the video where I was giving you that lapdance?”

“With the feathered boa?”

“No, the other one with the handcuffs. During Kei-chan’s birthday party.”

“Ah, yes- handcuffs. That was hot.” Miki reminisced fondly with a faraway look.

“That video.”

“That’s it? That stupid video? That was so PG-rated, compared to the other stuff you usually do. The way you’re going on about it, I expected a sex tape or something.”

Rika smacked Miki over the head, “Stop looking so elated about the idea of a nonexistent sex tape!” She sighed, “We woke up naked and I don’t really remember what happened the night before except for us making out.”

Miki frowned. “You don’t remember? But you remember everything.”

“Precisely.”

“I’m pretty sure we didn’t have sex. I can’t believe you used this shoddy reason to break up with Yocchan. Shit, she’s going to kill me if she finds out.”

“We didn’t break up. We were already on a break then.”

“Actually, I meant to ask- what the hell is up with that shit? You guys behave the same as when you were together anyway. Minus the sex, that is.”

Rika sighed, slumping back in her seat. “That’s kind of the point. We were both so busy, we lost time for each other. Sometimes…”

“Sometimes?” Miki asked quietly.

“You know how Yossi is, with me. She’s so patient all the time and sometimes there’d be this- look. She just looks at me with this lost look in her eyes, but she was always patient, always waiting.”

“And how is now and everyday since you guys broke up any different?”

“Because I’ve betrayed her trust and today she knows I’ve betrayed her trust.” Rika wiped at the tears streaming down her face. “The look she gave me today- I never thought Yossi could look at me like that, ever.”

Miki hated when people cried. Grabbing Rika’s face, she started wiping away the tears with a bar napkin, forcing Rika to look at her.

“Look, you may have a memory gap, but I ALWAYS remember my sexual escapades.

One. Your only proof that we slept together was a fuzzy video of you giving me a lapdance and thrusting your hips distastefully close to my face.

Two. You have a godlike photographic memory despite your intoxication levels, yet you do not remember anything from that night.

Ergo – You got knocked out and we didn’t sleep together. Quod Erat Demonstrandum.”

Clearly agitated, Rika waved Miki’s syllogism aside with some irritation, “I don’t speak French. And I don’t need you to make me feel better about myself.”

“I’m not trying to make you feel better about it,” Miki replied testily. She had the unenviable job of being everyone’s immoral compass since she had the least soul amongst them. “Yasuda-san’s birthday party, right? I’m 100% sure we didn’t have sex.”

“But why don’t I remember anything beyond us making out?”

Miki scrunched up her face, trying to remember. “We were making out, but your asthma attack kinda killed the mood.”

“I had an asthma attack?” Rika looked at her puzzledly.

“Yeah. You passed out after. I remember dragging you into the recovery position before passing out myself.” Miki flicked Rika on the forehead. “Dude, oxygen deprivation. That’s why you don’t fucking remember anything.”

”I love how this discussion has taken such an academic turn. The science does seem to point to yes.” Kaorin’s voice from the next booth startled them. “However, shouldn’t the two of you be at work?”

“I can’t believe you just reprimanded them with a pun.” Kei shot her colleague a pained look.

“Omoshiroi, Iida-san.” Miki slow-clapped.

Shibata was laughing delightedly at the pun, earning odd glances from the people around her. Kaori basked in the appreciation for a second or two before turning her usual expressionless features to her tardy residents. “What do the two of you think you’re doing here in the middle of a work day?”

“Lunch break.”
“Off-shift,” Miki chirped, clinking glasses with Rika and they both tossed back their drinks.

“I can’t believe you guys are stalking us for gossip.” Rika glared at Kei, and then shifted her exasperated look to Ayumi.

“We’re just concerned about you, Rika-chan,” her friend answered guilelessly.

“I’m fine.” Rika frowned, trying to process all the new information that was countering all the guilt she’d been carrying for so long. “I’m an idiot, but I’m fine.”

“Problem with the lot of you is that you don’t communicate with each other,” Kei chided. She got up, grabbed Rika’s arm and dragged her towards the door. “Come on, you need to talk to someone now.” Shibata trotted along, helping to propel a reluctant and protesting Rika forward.

“I’m drunk enough to beat the crap out of the two of you and leave you bleeding in an alleyway!” was the last thing the two surgeons heard as Kei and Ayumi wrested Rika toward the hospital.

Iida poured herself a shot of vodka, making a face as the alcohol burned down her throat. “So, I need to talk to you.”

“Sorry, my alleged heart has reached its heart-to-heart chat quota. Please try again later.”

“Let’s just pretend this is a work assessment session, but with alcohol.” Kaori refilled their glasses.

“My last assessment was with Nakazawa-san. How is this any different from sessions with her?”

“Your smart-assedness is what’s landing you in trouble with people in the hospital.”

“Really? Here I thought it was because I was on Inaba-sama’s shitlist.”

“Yes, which reminds me. She tells me that the next time you ask one of her scrub nurses to ‘free your wedgie’ during a surgery, you’ll be cleaning bedpans in the pediatric ward during rotavirus season.”

Miki snickered. “Okay. But where will I get my cheap thrills now?”

“Try the psyche ward. That’s where I go to get mine.”

They shared a knowing chuckle and toasted each other. Miki entertained herself by tearing up little strips of paper napkins and constructed a small bonfire, wishing she had a lighter to set it alight.

“When are you reporting in to OB/GYN?” Kaori asked abruptly.

“Like, never.”

“Boss-mode now.”

“Sorry. Not ever, Iida-san.”

The surgical chief sighed. “I’m sorry I left you alone to handle the quintuplet premie case the last time.”

“Why’d you do that? It was my first year,” Miki mumbled flatly, all the jest gone from her tone. “All of them died.”

“We were already prepared for that eventuality. They just came too early.”

“Yes, but why me?”

“Because I knew you could handle it. I thought you could handle it.” Kaori corrected herself. “Fujimoto, it happens. You know you have to care for your patients, but at the same time maintain enough distance so you don’t lose objectivity.”

Miki shook her head. “I should’ve-“

“Stop. No ‘should haves’ and ‘would haves’,” Kaori interrupted firmly.

“Maybe I’m just not cut out for it.”

“You started with obstetric surgery as your chosen field, knowing that it was one of the most challenging specialties in the program and at the first instance of mortality, you crumbled. We didn’t drop you out of the program as much as you decided to drop out of it yourself.”

There was a brief moment of silence as Miki considered that, unable to respond to the unexpectedly frank rebuke. Kaori continued, “You know why you inevitably end up getting the most difficult and unenviable tasks in this hospital? You lack tact and patience- but when it boils down to the line, you’ve proven to rise to the challenge and accomplish it brilliantly. That’s the Fujimoto Miki that needs to come back to OB/GYN now. ”

Kaori slid money onto the table to cover the bill and left Miki to ruminate over second chances.

-----

Yossi lay on the grass numbly staring up at the cloudless sky, trying not to think about the non-conversation she had with Rika earlier. They didn’t actually speak at all, just sat there exchanging a series of facial expressions and pained looks.

Miki once observed that the two of them didn’t actually need to speak to convey anything- a twitch of the eyebrow and it was all over, whatever that meant. That was what made them such a great team, the well-oiled Ishiyoshi combi- working the emergency rotation together and not losing a single patient like a boss.

That was also probably what started breaking them apart. They had stopped talking to each other- depending on whatever non-verbal communication from their bond to relay feelings and concerns that really should’ve been vocalized. Yossi wasn’t a talker to begin with anyway.

“No wonder she cheated,” she mumbled to herself, angrily swiping at the tears that seemed to have trickled down her face without her permission. “Goddammit.”

Her pager buzzed insistently and she glanced at the unfamiliar string of numbers, racking her brain to remember what the code stood for. She started making her way out of the small clearing of trees, hopping over some low shrubbery to take the shortcut there when she spotted her intern standing by the unfrequented service entrance with two rough-looking and burly men who seemed to be cornering her.

“Oi!” She called out, causing the two men to turn and glower menacingly at her. Ai looked startled and she started pushing them away towards the exit, in an urging, indistinct tone. “Everything okay, Aichan?”

Ai nodded, slightly disturbed. The two men had gotten into their black sedan parked just by the gate and drove away. “I’m alright, Yoshizawa-san.”

“Who were those men? Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I’m fine. Really,” her intern insisted, smiling up at Yossi to assure her. Yossi’s pager beeped and the unfamiliar code popped up again. “It’s Psych,” Ai informed her.

“How’d you know?”

“Gaki-san’s been working on a Psych case- that’s how I recognised that code.”

“You sure you’re okay? You know you can come talk to me if there’s anything wrong.”

Ai laughed as she pushed her senior through the doors into the hospital, “Yes, I’m really okay! Thanks, senpai. You really should get going now.”

Yossi ruffled Ai’s hair and started for the lifts up to the Psych wards, wondering what they needed her there for.

“I can’t believe you just reprimanded them with a pun.” Kei shot her colleague a pained look.

CAUGHT RED HANDED

Quote
Iida poured herself a shot of vodka, making a face as the alcohol burned down her throat. “So, I need to talk to you.”

“Sorry, my alleged heart has reached its heart-to-heart chat quota. Please try again later.”

BAHAHA BRILLIANT LINE! i'm totally using that from now on XD

Quote

“When are you reporting in to OB/GYN?” Kaori asked abruptly.
DUN DUN DUN

Quote
There was a brief moment of silence as Miki considered that, unable to respond to the unexpectedly frank rebuke. Kaori continued, “You know why you inevitably end up getting the most difficult and unenviable tasks in this hospital? You lack tact and patience- but when it boils down to the line, you’ve proven to rise to the challenge and accomplish it brilliantly. That’s the Fujimoto Miki that needs to come back to OB/GYN now. ”

Kaori slid money onto the table to cover the bill and left Miki to ruminate over second chances.

That was so deep.

Quote
Miki once observed that the two of them didn’t actually need to speak to convey anything- a twitch of the eyebrow and it was all over, whatever that meant. That was what made them such a great team, the well-oiled Ishiyoshi combi- working the emergency rotation together and not losing a single patient like a boss.

I could see that  :pimp:

Quote
“No wonder she cheated,” she mumbled to herself, angrily swiping at the tears that seemed to have trickled down her face without her permission. “Goddammit.”

TEARS NEED PERMISSION FIRST, DAMNIT.

Quote
Her pager buzzed insistently and she glanced at the unfamiliar string of numbers, racking her brain to remember what the code stood for. She started making her way out of the small clearing of trees, hopping over some low shrubbery to take the shortcut there when she spotted her intern standing by the unfrequented service entrance with two rough-looking and burly men who seemed to be cornering her.

EH??!??!?!??!!?!! AI GONNA GET JUMPED?!?!?!?  :shocked

Quote

LIES. IT HAS TO BE LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :smhid

From the very first paragraph, it was like a dark brown voice saying, "The grac is back."

By the way, lame jokes crack me up so much. XD

Man, I'm so glad you updated.

And this chapter really was full of heart to hearts. Sorta, mostly, kinda. If you count Ai and Eri's chat, Yossie teasing Maki and Reina and Risa and Kei talking about poo calligraphy, heart to heart, then, yeah.

Aya's little problem has been weighing on me, though and now, so has this:

Quote
Ai nodded, slightly disturbed. The two men had gotten into their black sedan parked just by the gate and drove away. “I’m alright, Yoshizawa-san.”
You're alright, Ai-chan? That's good, cuz now I'M worried. :sweatdrop:

ah alot of quite frank talks in this chapter wasn't there, seems as though maybe things might be moving forward for people after some of these chats, perhpas though, perhaps the two people who most needed a heart to heart ind the end were the only ones who, well, didn't.......

HAPPY 1ST ANNIVERSARY TO ON CALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 :pen_whirl: :pen_whirl: :pen_whirl: :pen_whirl: :pen_whirl: :pen_whirl: :pen_whirl:

And happy birthday to me lol

I don't think you knew anything about it being my birthday last year, but you posted On Call on the 7th anyway (even if it's not really OUR 7th with the time difference xD), automatically making it a gift to me xDDDD I can't say I've ever been so fangirly excited about a 'birthday present' ahahaaa... it's been a year now, and this thread in the last several months has been rather slow-moving -___- Understandably grac has been busy with work and other unmentionables aha BUT I will ALWAYS be cheering you and all your wonderful little doctors on!!!! FOREVER, YA HEAR!!!!  :onioncheer:

So I've been meaning to leave a comment for chapter 10 for a while now... but not too long ago I decided to save it for this special day. Wrote this whole comment up a few days ago, actually...  I confess it's a little lonely without ropychan's awesomely epic comments around here - reading those always gave me so much fangirling fuel. It's been so long since either of us have heard from her, but I'm not giving up. I hope she comes back. ;______; if not, she better be reading and appreciating On Call in her own time (and doing cool, spyish things of course)!!!!!

I've also had this for a while now, whoops:

Quote
I'm sure someone with better brains can come up with an appropriate caption.

Grac darlin', you keep reeling me in with this story and I'm already so tangled up in it (so please update soon?)XD

Chapter 10: Heart-to-Hearts

I loved this chapter (I wonder when you'll get sick of hearing that  XD) for the usual grac!crack of course, but I found it (surprisingly) deep and character-focused and enjoyed every single moment of it!  :k-inlove:

Oh and before I begin my quoting assault, just wanted to thank you for the hyperlinks. Gawd knows I need them ;_________;

Quote
“Get it? I’m ‘staph’,” she repeated with a giggle.

 I get it, Eri! I get it! *giggles along* C'mon, Eri's bad gags alone might not make people laugh, but her wonderfully diabetes-inducing delivery of them =  :inlove:
I also enjoyed the little detail of Ai-chan stepping on Eri's foot. xD Good to know her abuse doesn't just end with Gaki hahahaaa... (though I wouldn't mind seeing more of that in this fic ;D).

Team MikiEri must be some force, huh? xD When one isn't busy being a menace to everyone, we have the other tormenting them with atrocious gags. *sigh* gotta be my favourite On Call team

Quote
“Fistula.” Eri muttered by way of a warning and suddenly an almost overwhelming foul smell from the diseased portions of the patient’s bowels permeated the air, causing one or two nurses to gag.

I almost gagged along with everybody just reading that. And even after clicking on the link I still wasn't quite sure what a fistula was... and I so shouldn't have google-imaged it...

As always, as interesting as all the doctor talk is, it's just completely beyond me.  :sweatdrop:  You sure you're not a doctor, grac?

Should we also be suspicious as to why Miki's not her usual foul, overbearing self? Maybe I need to go back and reread...

Quote
“Are you sleeping together?” Yossi asked suddenly, breaking the silence.

“No.”
“Yes.”

“But not in a sex way!” Reina clarified quickly.

Here we go again...   XD

Quote
“Not in a- sex way,” Maki repeated in a small voice and blushed slightly, turning away from her intern.

Totally with Reina here - I don't think I've ever squealed over Maki before, but I will gladly give in for this sweet little moment :wriggly:

Quote
Yossi met Maki’s gaze and shot her a ‘Really? Your intern? You’re disregarding work protocol for this?’ look. Maki responded with a blank ‘I don’t read minds’ shrug.

Hehe. I really like Maki's simpleness, it makes her really cute!  :luvuluvu:

Quote
Rika had this look on her face that Yossi knew well- someone, namely Aya, was about to either get smacked or throttled.

XD ACK. I would LOVE to see an outright brawl happen some time in this hospital. Rika in the midst of one would be preferable too. Pretty please? :3

Quote
Rika and Aya turned back to glare at each other, communicating wordlessly through a complex series of facial twitches, flaring nostrils and narrowing eyes- the very representation of immovable object, irresistable force.

Superbly described. BODY LANGUAGE. :tama-heart:

"Fine" "Later" "Now" "No way" and with those few words, Yossie comes, yet again, to the following conclusion:

Quote
“Are you sleeping together?” she asked wryly.

 poor Yossie, though I find it amusing (and strange) that she's going around wondering if people are sleeping together. Why Yossie getting none?  XD

Quote
Rika had overreacted and Yossi did not expect the response she got from her offhand joke.

Joke or not, I'm sure that touched some kind of nerve... both with Rika and herself >____< my IshiYoshi, when will I EVER see you healing and making up... *sniffles*

Quote
“Uh, heeh? He- uh, wrote something. Ehh~ nandake?”

I could so picture Gaki-san here...  XD

Quote
Kei gave Risa a peculiar wink that suggested otherwise...

...and looked away quickly when she saw a selca of Kei winking at her.

A 'peculiar' wink, hey... ^^; When I first read both mentions of Kei-chan winking, all I got were images of Taka-san going all CG on the screen... had to laugh to myself

Quote
“That’s not the case at all, Yasuda-san. I’ve seen your notes on Hiro-san, and you’ve really exhausted yourself finding the right treatment for him,” Risa declared fervently. “Don’t worry, I’ll find a way to get him fully diagnosed. Leave him to me!”

Awwww, reliable!Gaki-san ever adorable.  :deco: she's gonna be one hell of a full-fledged doctor, for sure!

Quote
She headdesked as soon as Risa skipped out of the room and reached for her phone to dial a number from memory without looking. “Rika-chaan~” she wailed as soon as the line connected. “Your intern made me feel old.”

Quote
“Ah, sasuga oresama.”

Uh-oh.

Quote
“I’m an asshole. That’s what’s wrong. Yossi found out I cheated on her.”

:banghead:

Quote
Kei stared at the phone bemusedly, the last thing she heard before hanging up was Rika saying ‘come sit on my lap, I have a stick to keep you in place’

I burst out loud laughing every time I finish this line. Gawd, intoxicated Charmy is so dirty.   Love it, ahahaaaa..

Quote
She was immediately swamped by the cooing working girls who were sitting with Rika and she returned their affection with some well-placed groping, causing them to squeal and protest playfully. They fluttered off, leaving the two surgeons alone after extracting some promises to ‘play some more’ later.

Gosh, and here I was almost beginning to think Miki's a lot of talk and little action. And you have something like this. What a playa  :pimp:

Quote
“Is this all you’ve had so far?” Miki asked.

All you've had so far? I mean, half a bottle of tequila and Charmy not smashed yet? WTF!!! I can't even do a bottle of bloody alcopop without going red and finding it hard to breathe. Half a bottle of tequila sounds beastly!  :shocked

Quote
“We were having problems even before, you know, you and I… slept together. I guess that was the tipping point for me.”

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

Quote
“Yes, we did. You told me so, and there… there was a video.”

In the On Call world, there are videos for everything. They've got a Big Brother thing going on over there, poor, paranoid souls...

Quote
“Remember the video where I was giving you that lapdance?”

“With the feathered boa?”

“No, the other one with the handcuffs. During Kei-chan’s birthday party.”

 Just, you know, casual conversation you'll hear between Miki and Charmy on any average day at a strip joint...

Quote
Rika smacked Miki over the head, “Stop looking so elated about the idea of a nonexistent sex tape!”

C'mon Charmy, let Miki have her fun. I mean you're always enjoying a nonexistent something else ahahahaa   :on lol:

Quote
“You know how Yossi is, with me. She’s so patient all the time and sometimes there’d be this- look. She just looks at me with this lost look in her eyes, but she was always patient, always waiting.”

“And how is now and everyday since you guys broke up any different?”

“Because I’ve betrayed her trust and today she knows I’ve betrayed her trust.” Rika wiped at the tears streaming down her face. “The look she gave me today- I never thought Yossi could look at me like that, ever.”

So rare to see this kind of angst in the On Call thread.   Gaaaaaaaaaah. IshiYoshi angst is probably the hardest angst for me to swallow. Once you've had your fun playing around with them grac, you better have them get together!  :tntrm:

The Charmikittyness of this scene was just delightful. I could really feel their friendship here, and Miki's rare shows of tenderness.  :mon inluv:

Quote
She had the unenviable job of being everyone’s immoral compass since she had the least soul amongst them.

I think that's something Miki just thinks she has to play up. Deep down, she's all soft and gooey, isn't she?  XD It makes me feel that in a way, the others tend to sell her short. I think Miki feels that way too. I get that feeling with it being 'unenviable' a job and all. Unless I'm trying to read into this too much - I just wanna give Miki a hug... hahaha  :deco:

Kaorin's pun makes it much-anticipated appearance.

Quote
Shibata was laughing delightedly at the pun, earning odd glances from the people around her. Kaori basked in the appreciation for a second or two before turning her usual expressionless features to her tardy residents.

YAY! We finally have somebody give her the recognition she deserves    hahahha, Shibata <3

Quote
“I’m drunk enough to beat the crap out of the two of you and leave you bleeding in an alleyway!” was the last thing the two surgeons heard as Kei and Ayumi wrested Rika toward the hospital.

Hahahahaaa... does Rika produce testosterone when drunk or what?.. ^^; anyway I can't wait for the IshiYoshi confrontation now!!!! Please don't leave us hanging too long!  :kneelbow:

Quote
“Sorry, my alleged heart has reached its heart-to-heart chat quota. Please try again later.”

That really is a good line to pull when you've had enough serious talk...

Quote
“Yes, which reminds me. She tells me that the next time you ask one of her scrub nurses to ‘free your wedgie’ during a surgery, you’ll be cleaning bedpans in the pediatric ward during rotavirus season.”

Miki snickered. “Okay. But where will I get my cheap thrills now?”

“Try the psyche ward. That’s where I go to get mine.”

And who said the hospital wasn't any fun!  :shakeit:

Quote
“Why’d you do that? It was my first year,” Miki mumbled flatly, all the jest gone from her tone. “All of them died.”

:mon waterworks:

Quote
“Because I knew you could handle it. I thought you could handle it.” Kaori corrected herself. “Fujimoto, it happens. You know you have to care for your patients, but at the same time maintain enough distance so you don’t lose objectivity.”

Miki shook her head. “I should’ve-“

“Stop. No ‘should haves’ and ‘would haves’,” Kaori interrupted firmly.

“Maybe I’m just not cut out for it.”

Miki's a hardened heart, that's what she is.
I love seeing this side of her. Reminds me how human she is.  XD

Quote
Kaori slid money onto the table to cover the bill and left Miki to ruminate over second chances.

Very touching scene.  :ptam-wub:  Something I'm sure a lot of us can relate to!

Quote
Miki once observed that the two of them didn’t actually need to speak to convey anything- a twitch of the eyebrow and it was all over, whatever that meant. That was what made them such a great team, the well-oiled Ishiyoshi combi- working the emergency rotation together and not losing a single patient like a boss.

Quote
They had stopped talking to each other- depending on whatever non-verbal communication from their bond to relay feelings and concerns that really should’ve been vocalized.

Get too complacent and that's what happens.

Quote
“No wonder she cheated,” she mumbled to herself, angrily swiping at the tears that seemed to have trickled down her face without her permission. “Goddammit.”

;______; I hate Yossie tears... kinda akin to seeing a grown man cry in a way.  :bleed eyes: I hope the two make up and FAST!

Quote
Ai nodded, slightly disturbed. The two men had gotten into their black sedan parked just by the gate and drove away. “I’m alright, Yoshizawa-san.”

No, you're obviously not. =__________=
I kind of know what's going to happen anyway, but doesn't make me any less excited. BRING ON THE DRAMAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

Quote
Yossi ruffled Ai’s hair and started for the lifts up to the Psych wards, wondering what they needed her there for.

YossiAi  And I also wonder what they need her there for as well. Which means, I want an update. Which means, I will be bugging grac about updating soon again. Which means grac needs to be prepared.

 :D

Anyway, THANK YOU, this was a fantastic update and I'm craving for more now having just gone through that chapter again >___< You've got a lot going for the characters now, time to accelerate!

Please take care and
UPDATE SOON GRAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Omake because I felt like it. (also, guilt)

Thanks to all my 4 readers for holding out hope. Here is some crack as a reward.

-----

“Kato-san, we’re going to run a routine peripheral nerve examination on you, so just relax, okay?” Aya gestured to Sayu to start from the patient’s feet.

“It won’t hurt, but just let us know if you feel discomfort,” Sayu said with a smile.

The patient had come in complaining of gradually losing feeling from his feet for a month now. Sayu started testing his reflexes with the hammer- working her way up from his ankles up to his knees and hips.

“Test the perineal reflex, please.” Aya looked up from the patient’s notes to Sayu.

The intern glanced at her resident, not certain if Aya was just being evil or extremely thorough. Sayu decided that she was both and retained a look of clinical detatchment as she guided the patient to flip over to his side, loosened his hospital gown and gently scratched the skin around the sphincter with a 21-gauge needle. Aya was secretly impressed by Sayu’s professionalism, certain that the girl would’ve complained or hesitated.

“You’re doing fine, Kato-san,” Sayu murmured as the muscle contracted and responded accordingly. “You can turn back over now.”

Evidently Kato-san was doing very fine because when he turned back onto his back, Sayu was greeted with a rather healthy response. To her credit, Sayu merely shifted her gaze casually to the patient’s records and began writing in it.

The neurologist cleared her throat, “Thank you, Kato-san, you can put your clothes back on now.” Peering over Sayu’s shoulder to view the notes, she choked back a bark of laughter as she saw the word ‘OMGPENIS’ scribbled across the page.

“When you’re dressed, let’s get your admission pe- papers in order. Dr. Shige will be personally attending to your co- case.”

Aya decided she probably fully deserved the dirty look Sayu was giving her. Why should Mikitty have all the fun around here?

Omake

“Oh my god, Ai-chan. What are you doing?” Sayu gasped as she surveyed the scene before her.

“Cooking,” answered Ai matter-of-factly, expertly kneading a lump of cookie dough.

Her fellow interns were frozen at the doorway to their common room, unsure of what to do. “Ai-chan, that’s… you’re not really cooking, you know,” Risa said gently, negotiating her way carefully into the room.

“I’m a good cook!” Ai declared loudly, narrowing her eyes at anyone who might dare to say otherwise.

Risa made soothing noises as she grasped Ai’s hands gently to free the raw cookie dough from her hands. “Of course you are, Ai-chan. You make us breakfast every morning, right?”

“Damn right, I do!” she yelled, clumsily smacking an oily hand against Risa face.

Someone had supplied Ai with a truly staggering amount of cookie dough and the drunk girl had recreated a detailed diorama of Tokyo all across the floor of the room. Reina started chugging on a beer while taking pictures of the masterpiece with her phone.

“What the heck are we going to do with all this?” Risa asked despairingly.

Eri passed her a bottle of vodka. “Get drunk and eat Tokyo, what else?”

“I’mma be Gomora!”

“Ha! Gomora sucks. Dibs on Earthtron!”

“I hate my alcohol tolerence level,” Risa muttered to herself while pouring herself a large drink.

Chapter 11- Tales from the Emergency Graveyard Shift: Night of the Living Dead

“Mano Erina, female aged 20, asystolic. Unresponsive to shock resuscitation and atropine,” the paramedic recited as they wheeled the gurney in through the trauma doors, never stopping his rhythmic compressions on the patient. “Collapsed suddenly, no apparent cause for heart failure.”

Reina glanced quickly at the board and sighed internally- another DOA. It never got any easier even after so many. It was a running joke that she had probably handled more dead bodies than any single mortuary service staff in the hospital, not counting one Fujimoto Miki, of course.

“Hook her up and get the crash cart,” Reina directed the nurse who looked at her perplexedly. The patient was clearly lifeless, but hell if Reina was going to give this up without a fight. Also, she was bored.

“Need help?” Ai asked as she entered the room, moving quickly next to Reina who was already intubating the patient. The breathing tube was inserted smoothly into her air passage and oxygen was pumped into her unresponsive lungs for her.

Looking up at the monitor at the flat line, Reina started cutting away at the patient’s clothes for better access.

“Come on, Mano-san,” Reina gritted out as she put as much effort as she could into performing chest pumps on the unresponsive patient.

“We should call it, doctor,” the nurse suggested. “It’s been more than 15 minutes.”

“Get the hell out of my trauma room if you aren’t going to help.”

Without skipping a beat, Ai negotiated around the nurse to grab the defibrillator. Reina spread the conductive gel liberally onto the surface of the paddles and stood clear as Ai applied it onto the patient’s chest.

“Resuming compressions,” Reina panted. “Who the hell needs to run for exercise when you do this everyday?”

“One last time- charge to 360. Clear.”

“ETCO2 is down,” Ai announced.

The monitor showed no indication of life and Reina threw in the towel. The nurse looked on with a small smirk at the defeated look on the intern’s face. Reina shut out the obnoxious nurse by staring intently at the patient’s face. “Aichan, please call it.”

“Time of death, 1:40 am.”

The two interns shooed the nurses out to clean up the room themselves. The graveyard shift tended to be staffed with the more unpleasant nurses and it really took a more unpleasant doctor to toe the line. Which was the reason they gave Miki when she got the short straw during the latest scheduling. It would’ve been all well and good if Yuko didn’t decide to throw the new surgical interns in along with her ‘for experience’.

Reina and Ai worked quietly, straightening out the room back into some semblance of order. Risa ambled in, assessed the situation and joined them silently, bumping shoulders with Ai in an attempt to cheer her up. It was never easy to lose a patient.

Ai turned off the air supply, smoothing the patient’s hair into order before moving to remove the tubes. Just then, the patient lurched, her eyes snapping open and she began gagging and fighting against the tube in her throat.

“Sweet-“
“Mother of-“
“Fuck!”

The harmony of profanities drew the attention of the other two of their group who were idling outside- Eri and Sayu peered in curiously to find out what the fuss was all about. Reina recovered from the shock first, and rushed to the patient’s side, flipping the machines on frantically.

“Mano-san, Mano-san!” Reina spoke firmly, as she attempted to restrain the flailing patient. “It’s alright, you’re in the hospital. Can you hear me?”

Ai flashed her penlight into Mano’s eyes to check her pupils, but wide, unresponsive eyes stared back at her, causing her to shudder a little.

Just as abruptly as she jolted back to life, the patient stilled- her vitals a little weak but fairly steady.

The five of them froze, studying the monitor intently before shifting their gaze to the patient.

“Whaddya think? Drugs?” Eri speculated.

“We’ll need labs before we can be sure,” Ai replied.

“Blood sample’s been sent down. And this isn’t really an emergency, so we can’t put it on priority.” Reina grumbled glumly.

It had been a busy night and they had been sending things down to the laboratory ceaselessly. The single, overworked lab tech on night duty had told them emphatically that she didn’t want to see them for anything short of an Ebola outbreak or a real emergency.

“Doesn’t this count as an emergency? The patient frickking came back to life after a good hour.”

They studied their resurrected patient with some trepidation, she seemed to be sleeping peacefully and breathing on her own.

“I’ll go and see if I can get something out of Diagnostics. There’s nothing a little cleavage flashing won’t get you.”

Eri looked pointedly at their friends and suppressed a grin. “I’ll come with you, Sayu.”

------

Director of Laboratory Services and Diagnostic Imaging Ayaka Kimura was a strict mistress of all she surveyed, namely, the basement where her department was located. She prided herself in the fact that there is nothing in the hospital that she doesn’t know about, since almost every in-patient case required labs or medical imaging.

Senior or no, doctors and nurses alike had to yield to her authority if they even wanted to be on the waitlist for tech services. Bribery worked to grease the wheels of bureaucracy, and gossip was the always the preferred commodity around Asa UH.

This was why right now at 2 am, Rika and Aya were sneaking around like burglars in the imaging department, hoping to break into an empty MRI room to use the facilities without needing to wait in line, nor having the risk of their business aired about in the cafeteria by the next meal cycle.

“Rika-chan.”

“Mm?’

“I think the ski masks are a bit much,” Aya said, her voice muffled by the thick woolen mask. She pulled it off, relieved that the scratchy material was no longer chafing against her face.

“Really? I thought you’d be more bothered by the codenames.”

“No, that was kinda cool.”

The emergency exit door across their hallway opened suddenly with a loud clatter, startling them.  They immediately ducked into the nearest storage room, listening intently to try and make out who it was.

“I know that voice,” Aya murmured as she recognised Sayu’s unmistakable tone.

“Ah, it’s their graveyard shift with Miki-chan tonight,” recalled Rika.

“They must need labs or something.”

Sighing, Rika squeezed past Aya in the narrow space and gingerly felt her way around the dark room before sitting herself down on the floor. “We won’t be able to leave until they do.”

“Remind me why we’re doing this again?”

“You can’t see me right now, but I’m glaring at you… ouch!”

“Sorry, couldn’t see you,” Aya said, not sounding remorseful in the slightest. She leaned against the door and slid down to join Rika on the floor.

“How do you feel? Head still hurts?”

“A little.”

“You’ve been taking pain meds for it, haven’t you?”

There was a long pause, the darkness and quiet somehow made the silence last even longer. “Damn it. I’ve turned into one of those kinda doctors.”

Rika reached out blindly to comfort Aya and ended up patting an ankle. “We’ll find out what’s wrong and fix it.”

“Speaking of, what was wrong with you and Yossi earlier?”

Another long bout of silence before Rika replied, “I think I’m one of those kinda girlfriends.”

“The stupid, don’t-know-what-a-good-thing-she’s-got-going-until-she-loses-it kind?”

“You know, I had a lot of alcohol earlier and there’s only so much sass I can take until I hit someone.”

Aya snorted with quiet laughter, “Ishikawa, have I ever told you how much more I prefer you drunk than sober?”

“Only every time I’ve gotten drunk. I’m starting to think you don’t really like me.”

Aya negotiated easily around Rika’s conversational feint. “So what happened?”

“Kei-chan locked the both of us into her office. We kinda sorted it out.”

“Hm.”

“It was awkward, but there was whisky.”

“I think I hear them leaving,” Aya noted, catching the sound of receding footfall and the chiming of the elevator. A few seconds later, the heavy metal doors of the elevator slid close with an audible clank.

“Check to see if the coast is clear.”

“Okay.” The sound of metal clattering was ominously accompanied by vulgar language Rika never thought Aya knew.

“I knew it,” Rika deadpanned. “This is Cliché University Hospital after all- why not, right? I swear someone tampers with all the store room doors to make sure this happens.”

“Don’t forget the stuck elevator. We had the stuck elevator last month,” Aya quipped while trying to insert the broken door handle back into the metal plate to no avail.

Rika flopped back onto the floor, cursing under her breath.

-----

After dropping off their lab request, Eri and Sayu returned to a hectic trauma room. Ai, Risa and Reina were struggling to revive Erina who had coded again.

“Clear,” Ai muttered before applying the defib paddles onto the patient.

The line spiked as a bolt of electricity coursed through the patient’s body. Five seconds passed but the monitor stayed flat and everyone released the collective breath they’d been holding. Thankfully, the patient did not follow suit.

“Second time of death, 2:25 am,” Risa pronounced.

Reina glared at the patient intently, as if daring her to come back to life. “All in favor of fucking this shit say ‘aye’.”

With a murmur of assent, they all started packing quickly to leave the trauma room and Ai pulled the sheet over the patient’s face when the body suddenly jerked back to life and almost sat up, if not for a surprised Ai decking her reflexively.

“Th’ fuck!” Ai punched the patient in the face and backed away quickly to the corner of the room. “I’m tellin’ ya, we gotta cut th’ head off! Fuckin’ zombies coming t’eat our brains.” All of them turned as one to gape at Ai’s outburst. The Fukuian was crouched in the corner of the room, glowering wildly at the gurney whilst mumbling about fire axes, evil umbrellas and conspiracies.

“You really need to stop playing video games, Aichan.” Risa suggested gently.

After checking that the patient was stable, if not a little worse for the wear with a small bruise forming over her eye, they joined Ai who was still crouched by the wall. The interns squatted in a row along the wall like so many yankiis, quietly observing the patient.

“You know…” Sayu started, her tone thoughtful. When she spoke like that, it was often a precursor to something insane or brilliant, usually the former. “Ai-chan’s got a point.”

“Sayu!” Eri looked horrified. “How can we cut her head off?”

“No, I’m not that crazy! I meant the next time she dies, we should perform an autopsy immediately.”

“That’s the same thing!”

Reina sighed. “Let’s just report this to the boss, okay? She’ll tell us what to do.”

Everyone turned as one to look at Eri who just looked slightly ill. Too much trauma in one night really chipped away at one’s constitution.

-----

Eri closed the on call room door behind her with utmost caution, flinching as the tiniest click sounded. Her colleagues crowded her almost immediately, like a pile of anxious puppies.

“What did Dr. Fujimoto say?”

“She said it’s probably Lazurus Syndrome and told us to fix it ourselves. Only… not so politely,” she replied.

“Yes, but how do we fix it? Didn’t you ask her?” Sayu asked.

Eri hesitated for a split second before taking a deep breath to steel herself for reentry. Almost three minutes passed before she slipped out again, an inscrutable look on her face.

“So what did she say?” Ai asked promptly.

“With or without the cussing?”

Risa rolled her eyes. “Without, please.”

“Then she didn’t say anything.”

Their pagers beeped in tandem and they shared a quick look of mutual trepidation amongst each other. Running for the emergency ward, they saw Reina standing outside the trauma room waiting for them, appearing both alarmed and annoyed at the same time.

“It’s dead- again,” Reina reported flatly. Too much trauma in one night really chipped away at one’s bedside manner.

They entered the room uneasily; the monitor was displaying a flat line. A very stark bruise had formed around Mano’s left eye, which prompted Risa to root around the drawers for some ointment. God only knows how they would explain that one away.

Reina sighed frustratedly. “I seriously have had enough of this. The family is outside- what should I tell ‘em?”

“Let’s just tell them she’s in a critical condition and might not make the night,” Sayu suggested practically.

“They’ll want to see her, though,” Eri chipped in.

“Oh, shit. We need to conceal this bruise,” Risa said in a panic as she gently applied the ointment over Mano’s eye.

“Gakisan, what are you doing?”

“Treating this bruise you caused! You know she’s just gonna wake up again later.”

“She’s been dead at least 5 minutes now. So, autopsy?”

“Sayu!”

“I’m for it, if you get permission from the family.”

“Aichan!”

“Shared credits in the white paper?”

“Reina!”

Eri giggled, “You guys are so funny.”

Risa took a deep breath to calm herself. “Eri, please don’t encourage them.”

Sayu’s pager buzzed just then, prompting her to pick up an urgent call at the front desk. “Who’s calling at this hour?” Sayu asked puzzledly. “Good luck, you guys. If there’s an autopsy, let me know!”

“I’ll get some make-up to cover this up,” Risa stroked the bruise gently.

“I’m gonna risk it and ask Fujimoto-san for help again,” Eri offered.

“I’ll talk to the family and stall for time.”

“The hell you’re leaving me here alone with the damn zombie!”

-----

After a near-fistfight in the dark, Aya and Rika agreed to call Sayu to free them from the storeroom. Rika had refused to ask Yossi, whom Aya suggested, and Aya was adamant that Miki was under no circumstances allowed to know about her condition.

Aya broke the standstill and conceded to recruiting her intern for the job. Having met the girl, Rika really started to worry about Aya’s sense of judgment and mental faculties but decided that Sayu could at least accomplish the simple task of freeing them from the room.

Thankfully, they had their mobile phones with them and a quick call to explain their situation to Sayu had her rushing to their aid.

A thud sounded and the door swung open easily to reveal a confused, if not a little concerned, Michishige Sayumi.

“That was quick. Thanks, Sayu.”

Jiggling the door handle from the outside, Aya found it jammed as well. She glanced at Sayu who had a hammer and flat chisel in her hand. “How did you-?”

“It’s happened before,” Sayu replied plainly without elaborating further.

“Well, uh- good job. Thanks.”

“You’re welcome, Matsuura-san. Is there anything else I can do for you?” Sayu asked brightly as though there were nothing out of the ordinary.

Rika now comprehended why Aya decided on asking her intern for aid- the girl was peculiar enough not to find their current situation unusual. “Well, the door to the MRI room might be locked…” she trailed off, eyeballing Aya for her acquiescence.

“Why do you need to go to the MRI room?”

Aya deliberated the advisability of enlisting Sayu for the task, but decided that they probably needed someone experienced with breaking in through doors with them. “You tell anyone about anything you see here tonight, I will lobotomise you personally. Understand?”

Startled, Sayu nodded wordlessly as her seniors each hooked an arm around hers and hauled her towards the MRI room.

-----

“We’re still trying to stabilise Erina-chan at the moment- her situation is quite severe,” Reina calmly explained to the distraught Mano family. “If there is anything you can tell me about her health beyond what you’ve filled into her admissions form, it would be really helpful.”

“She’s always been so healthy, hardly ever gets sick…”

“Motherfucker!” Ai’s voice rang out loudly from the trauma room, alarming everyone standing in the vicinity.

“Oh god, is she okay? My baby!”

Reina sighed and led them away from the area gently. “That’s actually a very good sign. Dr. Takahashi is extremely passionate about her patients’ well-being.”

With a promise to return quickly with an update, Reina extracted herself from the family to lend Ai a hand. Sure enough, Erina had come back to life and mercifully, Ai did not assault her again.

“She’s stable, blood gasses normal,” was all Ai managed out, tightening her hold on a scalpel, all the while glaring at the patient from her position at the far end of the room.

“Ai-chan, there is no such thing as zombies. We’re gonna be in so much shit if you cut her head off with that.”

Risa entered the room just then with her make-up pouch. “Oh good, she’s alive. Tanakacchi, I had to raid your fancy stash ‘cause I’m out of concealer.” She waved Reina’s limited edition Anna Sui concealer about.

“It shocks me how little I actually care about that right now,” Reina replied, squeezing the bridge of her nose to alleviate the headache she could feel pounding behind her eyes. “I’m giving you five minutes, then I’m bringing her family in.”

“Roger that. Give me a hand, Ai-chan.”

“No way. I’ll protect you from here.”

-----

Miki lay in the dark, contemplating whether or not to get up and check on the interns. They haven’t come in with anything besides that Lazarus earlier, so she figured everything was okay.

Someone knocked quietly on the door before opening it slowly. “Fujimoto-san?”

“What?” she growled in response.

“I’m really sorry to disturb you again, but the patient has been coding and coming back to life without resuscitation several times already.”

“Come in here and close the door.”

A pause. “Are you going to hurt me?”

“I will if you don’t do as I say.”

Eri stepped into the on call room nervously and kneeled by the door for an easy getaway.

Miki sighed and sat up on the bed, running her fingers through her messy hair to get it back in order. “So the patient’s stable now?”

“Um. Right now? I don’t know.”

“You don’t know,” Miki repeated in a monotone.

Eri prostrated herself immediately. “I’m sorry! Pleasehelpus. The sexshops are all closednowand I can’tbuy you anyporn! Maybeprostitutes!”

Repressing a chuckle, Miki stretched lazily. “Is she hot?”

“Hunh?”

“Is the patient hot? As in sexy.”

“Uh, she’s kinda cute, I guess- if you’re into that sort of thing.”

“Cuter than Aya-chan?”

“No one is cuter than Matsuura-san,” Eri blasphemed smoothly, all the while crossing her fingers behind her back.

“Yosh, this better be worth it, Kame.”

-----

Sayu sneezed as she expertly pushed the bent hairpin through the last tumbler and popped the lock open. Rika and Aya were standing behind the girl in pure awe.

Two doors and an electronic lock later, they finally managed to get themselves into the imaging room. Rika sent Sayu out into the corridor to keep a lookout while she assisted Aya into the machine.

“I’m bringing your intern along next time we have a party. She must be really handy to get you into places when you need to get something.”

“That’s called breaking and entering and larceny, Rika-chan. And you’re not allowed out when you get drunk.”

“I’m just saying,” Rika grinned, as she helped Aya lie down on the padded surface. “Comfy? You want ear plugs?”

Aya shook her head, “Naw, I’m fine.”

“Okay, I will soothe you with the sultry sound of my voice to offset the clanking of the machine.”

“On second thought, gimme the ear plugs.” Aya secretly smiled at Rika’s attempt to be cheery.

Rika gave Aya’s forehead a reassuring pat before snapping the cage-like coil around her head carefully. With a deep, calming breath, Aya gave a thumbs-up to Rika who gently slid the narrow table into the machine.

“Let’s go,” Rika said, moving into the next room where the monitors were.

Sayu was standing uncertainly by the entrance and Rika gestured her into the room to sit beside her. “We’re here. Ready to get your photo taken?”

“Okay,” came the faint reply through the intercom system.

Rika used to think the clanking of the MRI was rhythmic and somewhat soothing. Right now, it was just unnerving her and she could not even begin to imagine what Aya must be going through. Sayu sat very still beside her, studying the screen intently.

A particular rendered slice caught Rika’s eye. “Do you see it?” she murmured to Sayu, as she reached out with a finger to trace the problematic area on the screen. She moved the tracker to zoom in on it, taking a sharp breath as she noted the severity of the malformation.

“Tonsilar herniation- about 5mm or greater,” Sayu noted in a subdued tone.

They fell into an uneasy silence as the computer compiled the images slowly, neither wanting to utter the suspected diagnosis out loud. Rika slumped over in her chair, expelling a shaky breath as she rested her head on tightly clasped hands. Sayu observed solemnly as the imaging equipment recorded layer after layer of her resident’s brain.

-----

As fortune would have it, Erina stayed mercifully stable for the entire duration of her parents’ visit. Risa was promising all sorts of firstborn children to every deity she knew under her breath as Reina smoothly updated the family with more information regarding Erina’s condition.

Just as Reina was ushering them out to the waiting area with more assurances, she saw Eri and Miki enter the room behind her. Making her exit quickly, she steeled herself for some serious bombardment from the senior resident.

To her surprise though, Miki seemed to be in a reasonable mood, which was likely due to the uncomfortable look Eri was wearing. “Were you guys doing anything in particular when she came back to life?” Miki asked.

“There wasn’t any common trigger. She just seemed to come back on her own.”

Ai mumbled softly, “Like a zombie.” Reina elbowed her sharply.

“Warm up her fluids, and get a blanket on her,” Miki prompted Eri, who leapt to the task. “We’ll hook her up on full life support.”

Having Miki giving directions had a heartening effect on the team as they bustled to comply with her orders. Even Ai had calmed down enough to function at some level of efficiency.

“She’s stable,” Ai reported. “I think we can keep her like this indefinitely.”

“Yeah. Let’s try to keep this one alive long enough for us send her to Neurology in the morning.”

“See? There’s no such thing as zombies, Ai-chan.” Risa reiterated, patting Ai on the back reassuringly.

“’Course there is,” Miki interjected matter-of-factly. “Medically dead humans with brain parasites that keep it moving and lumbering around. There’s a research paper on it and everything. Don’t you kids learn anything in medical school nowadays?”

The level of alarm that crossed Ai’s face was unparalleled to anything Eri ever came up with and that prompted Miki to send Eri out for prostitutes just to make sure her intern still gave the best panicked looks.
-----

By dawn, the interns were gathered in the cafeteria and given a wide berth by the rest of the breakfast crowd, possibly due to the profuse amount of alcohol on their table. Sayu had joined them an hour later with no explanation of where she had been and commenced with catching up, pouring herself drink after drink quietly.

Risa was a lot more vocal, loudly recapping their night’s ordeal. “I mean, why is she such a- a bitch? She’s such a troll all the time and unreasonable with her stupid requests!”

“You have to distance yourself to get through the day,” Eri asserted sagely. “Not even the great Fujimoto Miki can be in control all the time. A lot of the nonsense she pulls are just for decompression’s sake- it’s actually fun, you know? The sex shop, I mean,” she rambled absently in defense of her senior.

“You know, your last sentence just completely negated the deep sentiments you started out with.”

“Did I just say the brothel was fun?” Eri looked mildly horrified, as if she had just snapped out of a daze. “Oh god, I’m a pervert.” She headdesked and whimpered pitifully, hugging her head with her arms.

Eri successfully secured the best onee-san Pulse had to offer and smuggled the giggling girl into the hospital only to be sent back out for crispy bacon and hash browns. With the lull in the shift, the rest of the interns were also sent out scrambling to meet Miki’s demands, save for a terrified Ai, who was forced to keep an eye on the comatose Erina until morning.

“You said sex shop, not brothel,” Reina supplied helpfully.

“Don’t get depressed by the things you say yourself, aho.” Risa smacked Eri unsympathetically.

“Don’t hit Eri-chan!” Ai shoved Risa off her chair and gathered the still moaning Eri into her arms and patting her head clumsily in an attempt to console her. “It’s okay to be a pervert, Eri. We’ll still love you.”

“But not in a sex way.”

“Oh my god, Reina, please don’t start again.” Risa groaned from the floor where she had ended up flat on her back.

Reina and Sayu cackled loudly, clinking glasses. “To love!” Sayu toasted.

“In a sex way!”

“Nooo sex!!” A muffled cry came from Ai’s bosom as Eri flailed helplessly in the older girl’s death embrace.

Risa bypassed the chocolate milk and started chugging directly from the vodka bottle to catch up quickly.

Sorry for any mistakes- I've been so out of practice, it's so not funny. And I will give Kiji-chan a cookie if she will close one eye on my alarming creative liberties with medical jargon.
Maybe I will return and link all the funny-sounding terms to Wiki, but really... Google is your best friend.

Rndy, I've updated. *ahem* Feels so good to say that. The power!!
