We at JPH!P send our thoughts and prayers to the Japanese people affected by this enormous natural disaster. 日本のために祈る Just surreal following the news and all the tsunami alerts across the Pacific. Stay safe and be alert!

The magnitude of the initial quake was 8.9 and it struck just off the coast of Japan's main island of Honshu. It's the biggest earthquake to hit Japan in more than a century, and one of the five biggest in the world since 1900. We've seen the shocking images of this tragic event, it's time to do what we can to support those in need:

Do what you can and DONATE to charities like Red Cross:

Japan Red Cross (English)

If you prefer to call in your donation, you can do that at 1-800-RED-CROSS for English or 1-800 257 7575 for Spanish. Or, you may text REDCROSS to 90999, and $10 will be added to your cell phone bill (US) and similar services in your country.

Visiting any local chapter of Red Cross, UNICEF, Salvation Army offices in person (during business hours) and online. Beware of scammers

In the US, you can also donate $10 to the Salvation Army towards their efforts in Japan by texting JAPAN or QUAKE to to 80888. More information can be found here and here.

I've done my text donations to Red Cross and Salvation Army. Do whatever you can afford

Got a tweet from Mika (Japanese fangir) and she is safe, took an extra 18-20 hours or so kinda worried there!

In Canada: "Beginning today, Rogers and Fido wireless customers can text ASIA to 30333 to donate $5 to earthquake relief efforts. The money - 100 per cent of all donations - will go to the Canadian Red Cross Japan Earthquake/Asia-Pacific Tsunami fund. Rogers is also making TV Japan available on free preview on Channel 829 to all digital cable customers."

While I was tired of waiting at the station, homeless people gave us their cardboards against cold. We're always passing them by, though.

Transport facilities were dead and I was so tired waiting so long. Then, a homeless guy gave me a cardboard saying "use this, it can warm you up". I used to pass homeless people by even when they were begging... Although what he did to me was such a sweet stuff.

It seems the AKB umbrella has also opened up a charity fund/donation as well here.

According to the site, the fund was opened after discussion with the Japanese Red Cross, and that not only members, but all staff related to the AKB umbrella as well as Akimoto Yasushi has donated to the cause.
