Also if memory serves me correct, America has recently sent military advisors to Libya. That's exactly what they did before going into Vietnam and Iraq. Guess it's the same old story eh?
Yes but let's not forget that America is not attacking Libya on some mere whim. Gadaffi is denying his people the very basic human right to choose who is in power and even going as far as killing them for it. That is not what a government does to it's people and it is a different scenario to your examples as this time the UN is against Gadaffi and not just the US/UK, and if they weren't involved, you would still get activity from France, Poland etc
But yes I think we can all agree that America is not conducting military operations in Libya as some paragon of virtue, as much as it's people like to think. There is that whole oil thing which the US can't do without right now so obviously their main interest at least is to protect it and ensure that whoever comes next into power is on good terms with them.
The problem I have with supplying arms to the rebels is that nobody even really knows what side the rebels are on. Do they like us? Hate us? Do they like burning flags, such as, America's? And they're currently an armed group without a real leader. I say they perhaps should have been more careful. After all it is documented that America supplied arms and training to Al-Qaeda in the 90's to suppress the Russian's from going further. Which of course came back to haunt them as they're using those same weapons and training in the fight against America.
Seeing as he was unarmed, a greater effect would have been achieved if he had been captured alive and put on trial in the International Criminal Court.
Ideally I agree with you, but think of what else that would mean. Most likely would have taken years to conjure up his trial and have evidence to associate him with the crimes he's committed. All the while the American public would be aware OBL was captured and wondering why the fuck is he even alive and not executed in America with the flag waving in the background. I can imagine Obama would probably receive huge criticism for it, enough perhaps to turn to the Republicans in mid-term elections and that's not what the Democrats want. I'd say the order was to shoot on sight, easier for everyone involved, but of course, that will never be confirmed.
More I see it, the more the whooping and hollering on the streets at OBL death just sits uneasy with me. The people that I saw who lost loved ones in 9/11 were respectful, decent and mournful at hearing the news. The college jocks I saw looked like they won a football match.
It's like "Our people killed some of their people" *dancing in the streets, waving of flags*, switch sides, repeat ad mortem. Pathetic really.
