That's actually referenced a few times in the script. If you demux the .ass script, I think you'll find the fansub staff left a bunch of comments like, "This isn't funny!" and "When was this script written?!" as reactions to those lines.

Couldn't quite take this episode seriously. Even the obvious was delivered WITH ALL DRAMATIC PAUSES.

Mayu does this weird slurring when she speaks quickly.

I saw this Miichan storyline coming from a mile away. Still, BLUE ROSE FUCK YEA.
(Although, it made me wonder why AKB couldn't hold a mini concert inside the ship to power-up the Kirara Drive faster.

This is Shouji Kawamori's doing. Need a space battle while a pop song is playing. Worked back then in the 80's, still works today.

^But we already know that idols can get Kirara power in rehearsal only, or the times Nagisa and Chieri have produced glow at the bikini photoshoot and after the election. It's about the idol spirit, not necessarily the battle setting. Battle just amps up the stakes and the hormones so they have more incentive to achieve those final stages, but the Flying Get has obviously used the Kirara Drive outside of battle before.

^ I wasn't talking about the battle setting and how it relates to powering up the Kirara Drive. I was referring to how the episode was unfolding. Mii-chan fight against the DES forces is typical of a space opera, which Shouji Kawamori did with Macross; somehow escape from her confines, pilot a mech suit, and in a self-sacrificing act to redeem herself of her past actions hold off their pursuers long enough for the Kirara Drive to fully power up, knowing she might be left behind or die in the process. And if she's going out with a bang, why not sing a pop song while fighting?
