I guess I'd vote for him now.

I don't get why Arizona wants Randy Johnson so much. 26mil for 2 years? Does he have anything left in the tank?

according to arizona's GM, they want to fill the seats with randy. also, they think that by switching to the NL, they'll get a bit more out of him. (maybe sub 4 ERA?).  they've also taken into account that his back's had the surgery.

i think it's a bad move, personally...but if it fills up the seats, it fills up the seats....

Isn't he over the hill already? Lots of 40-something pitchers are still in demand.

The thing about the Big Unit: he was hurt most of last year and STILL put up some impressive strikeout numbers.

If you can still strike out Major League hitters at any age, you can help the ballclub.  And it's one of the reasons he has been able to last this long, his high strikeout levels.  Once that goes, so does he.  Lookit how long Nolan Ryan was able to pitch in the big leagues.

As for Sammy Sosa, wasn't he offered a minor league contract by the Rangers?  If so he could be picked up on the cheep as a utility outfielder/DH.  Plus Texas could drum up SOME publicity if he reaches the 600HR plateau.  BIG "if" I know...

Dang, after Super Bowl madness is over...  it'll be but WEEKS before pitchers and catchers report for spring training!  I can't wait!

I agree, hopefully he would hit great, Sammy. Performance bonus probably would be that big.

I still reminisce of the way he and McGwire electrified their hitting rivalry. Too bad this "drug stuff" would always dilute those moments.

FWIW, I may be one of a handful of baseball fans who doesn't give a SHIT about all this steroid crap.

How come it's OK for assholes to moralize about steroid use in baseball when other sports (read: NFL) get a virtual pass.  I don't dig it.

Good luck to Sammy and Barry and Giambi and even Mark McGwire in '07.

Anyway, regarding Barry, I think his contract was rejected, so technically he is unsigned officially.

Too much drama between the Giants and Barry...  this is snowballing into a real mess!

If Bud Selig's office didn't reject the contract language, it's possible the players union would have.

They'll fix things up, most likely.  The Giants' front office see a BIG pot of ca$h this season with Barry chasing Henry Aaron's career home run record.

Barry Bonds

Is Barry Bonds worth 15.8 million in 2007?

(Actually his deal is worth about $20 million if he actually plays a full season.)

Just going by statistics alone, not even close. San Fransisco is paying a significant premium just to have him break Aaron's record as a Giant, but even the extra attendance he attratct with the chase won't be nearly enough to make that salary.

Yeah, AT&T park would always be filled as long as Barry plays, whether he delivers or not.

Extra attendance yes but you also have to take other accounts like tv deals, advertisement and whatnot. What Barry is doing, like it or not, is historic and the Giants can jack up the price and milk Barry for all its worth.

Agreed.  Situation is different for the Giants, who depend on attendance revenue since they own (built w/private funds) the stadium and thus need a star to fill the seats.  A year-long campaign to highlight the breaking of a 33-year-old record (almost as long as the Maris single-season HR record) might entice a few more people to plunk down a few hundred for admission, parking, five-dollar hot dogs and $10 beers.

As for the end of the NFL season...  I am also relieved that (at least part of) the focus will shift to MLB.  If anything because we'll be done with the NFL double standard.  Crap like being enduring endless stories about sinful baseball players who use drugs while the same sports "writers" give football players a pass.  I might also add that, for some annoying reason, football talk on baseball websites and radio programs, like the NFL needs MORE publicity than it already enjoys.  (Anyone ever give a crap about a commercial being aired during the World Series?)  I always hear football talk during the heart of the baseball season but you think hot stove gossip will interfere with blather on who will finish in last place in the whatever conference...

OK I am not the typical consumer of competitive sports in the USA so your mileage may vary -- that's just me.  Give me the Barry Bonds chase of #755 over ANY NFL game of any week.  Thank you.

Another thing: NFL fans got to watch the Super Bowl on a TV network other than FOX!

Come October, us fans will have to endue the usual bullshit from Joe Buck and Tim McCarver.  Again.

It's.  Not.  Fair.

The giants already have prior tv deals done so he doesn't bring in any revenue thorough tv.  Also people are only going to fill the seats when Bonds is a couple homers shy of Aaron's record.  And what happens after the record is broken? I think attendance will drop.

Nothing fills the seats more than a winner, period.

This is supposedly the philosophy (purely speculative) behind Brian Sabean's (or is it Peter Magowan?) roster construction.  That the safest road to success is a team full of "proven" veterans.  So you got guys like Bonds, Ray Durham, Omar Vizquel, Russ Ortiz (ECCH!), Rich Aurilia (in his second tour of duty)...  umm, it must really SUCK to be in the minor league system of the Giants.

Can they win, with new zillionaire Barry Zito?  Prolly not cause for every step forward that Zito provides, guys like Ortiz drag the team down several rungs.

I'm not really optimistic the Giants will make it out of the West, I have a feeling this season is going to be can Barry break the record year? I'm not really up to date with the NL West (Astros fan right here) so unless the Dodgers or Padres went and completely overhaul their team this post-season then I'm looking at those two to take the crown and I'm pretty damn sure Giants not taking the Wild Card.

Yes I'm biased and yes I'm thinking the Astros going to take the Wild Card again. XD

When the record is broken, I doubt the attendance will drop. Every homerun that Barry hit after/if he break the record may potentially be his last and that may entice people from coming to the game hoping to catch and witness it. His season doesn't stop when he gets to 756 unless its the last game..
