Opening Night on ESPN now. Cleveland gets its first hit of the season. Runners on first and second, one out in the top of the 3rd.

I'm not one for the blather on steroids, though. Shaddap already!

Interestingly, the season STARTED with Wood and Prior on the DL, as opposed to a month or so of overwork from Dusty Baker.

And they said the Cubs winning in '06 was the next step in Hell finally freezing over.

I loved seeing Pedro's "wildness" in last night's game against the Nats. Only Pedro is unafraid to pitch inside to batters. And of course somebody (Jose Guillen) got all snappy. Can't blame him but sheesh Pedro's in the N.L. now and will have to take his hacks at the plate.

The grudge match is next week, in RFK. Stay tuned, true believers!!

Don't worry: Wilkerson is a better player and look at what a sourpuss Soriano turned out to be. He's an overrated player with a low OBP, junk defense at 2B and cares more about his image as "slugging second baseman" than doing something helpful for the team.

Props to Junior Griffey and I hope he can last the season without another serious injury. Perhaps they should move him from CF to ease the strain.

The "War on Terrorism" will be won when they cut out "God Bless America" in Yankee Stadium as rendered by the bald opera dude.

Hmm, that's baseball. They'll be days like this...

Tim Wakefield got bombed in his first start for Boston and people were thinking, boy is THIS IT for the knuckleballer? Today in Baltimore, he allowed only one unearned run in six innings and got his first win of the season (although it wasn't without a little blood and sweat as he stranded 10 runners on base in the process).

Roy Halladay, an AL Cy Young candidate if there ever was one, starts at home against the Devil Rays (soon to be just the "Rays") and you might think ah they're just the DEVIL RAYS. Seven and a third, eight hits, five runs. Sometimes you just can't win.

I like that the Jays' new free agent closer, BJ Ryan, wasn't being used in a save situation yesterday, coming in the game to put out a fire that could have put things out of reach. Toronto still lost but I think it was a good illustration of a more practical way to utilize your relief pitching corps.

The jays certainly got a ton of hype in the preseason. I think you have to give them a bit to get it all sorted, they have some great players but they just need to gell.

Hopefully we can say the same for the MN Twins!

Good luck to the Twins. Not sure if the front office is up to the task, what with their decision to field two crappy players at third and short, demoting a real prospect to rot in AAA.

I read on Baseball Musings today that the Astros actually PITCHED to Barry Bonds today. And got three (3) outs for their efforts!

Wow.

I mean, some MLB managers still believe he's Superman on the Cream or something and he is capable of almost anything, kinda like how Fox announcers have a love fetish for whatever Derek Jeter does (hitting, fielding, being "clutch" etal).

It's interesting to note that there has been NO major motion picture about the breakthrough of Jackie Robinson in 1947. Oddly enough, Jackie played HIMSELF in a biopic called (surprise!) "The Jackie Robinson Story." I remember seeing a few minutes of it and seeing why Robinson was a ballplayer, instead of a thespian.

I expect a major movie director to take another stab in the next few years.
