TakaNee: Coffee Maker
In Tokyo, there is a small cafe in an alleyway that not many people know of and so the place doesn't get many customers. However they do get a small amount and with each customer has their own stories. The cafe was built right after the world war and so it had an old feeling to it with antique furniture and dim lighting. The cafe was always playing smooth piano music and there was a scent of coffee beans in the air. The cafe was very quiet most of the time and even the customers who came in were quiet. The usual waitress of the cafe is Yamamoto Sayaka who works the night shift while her friend Milky works the day. Because Sayaka works the night, she doesn't see as many customers like Milky does. Sayaka only sees two or three customers come in who order the same thing everyday. One of the customers she particularly noticed a lot was a small girls named Takahashi Minami. She was a college student studying to become a veterinarian and so she was constantly in the cafe drinking coffee and working on her laptop. Sayaka would often give her the same drink and food item of choice depending on her mood. When Minami was working hard she wanted an expresso with extra sugar and a banana muffin. When Minami was relaxing she would want a caramel latte and a piece of strawberry cake. On sad days Minami would want black coffee and some orange slices. Then when she was really happy, Minami would want a banana parfait and would sit there eating it happily.
Sayaka learned a lot about Minami without even knowing her personally let alone say a single word to her. They didn't talk but Sayaka felt like she was growing a connection with Minami. She was there on her birthday when she came in alone and so Sayaka gave her a slice of cake with a candle in it. Sayaka was there when Minami got accepted into veterinary school and celebrated with a parfait. She was also there when Minami broke up with her girlfriend and comforted her with some tea and macaroons. Minami never said a word to her besides what she wanted and thank you. Sayaka didn't mind not speaking to her but she always wanted to sit down and talk to her. Have an actual conversation with Minami but because she was shy, she never really got the chance. She was also afraid she would be disturbing Minami and her work and so she would stand behind the tables and take orders.
"Hey Sayaka don't forget to clean up before you close up ok?" Milky said as she put on her jacket.
"Yeah I got it." Sayaka said as she put on her apron.
"Don't forget to take out the trash."
"I got it."
Milky left and Sayaka was left alone once again to start her shift. She started by preparing a fresh pot of coffee while moving around cleaning up the tables. Looking up at the clock she saw it was five which meant Minami was going to be coming in. Just like that, Minami stepped through the door and took a seat at her usual spot at the corner by the window. She sat down and pulled out her laptop where she opened it and then started to load it. As she was waiting for it to load, she opened up the menu and started to browse through her options. Seeing the way she acted, Sayaka already knew what she was going to order to she went into the back to get it. When she came back out, she walked over to Minami's table and set down the food.
"I'll have the.."
"Banana muffin and expresso with extra sugar miss."
Minami set down her menu and looked at the food that was set before her. She was surprised and then looked at Sayaka about to ask how she knew and Sayaka simply responded,
"You come her a lot."
Minami simply nodded and thanked her for the food before starting on her work. Sayaka simply smiled and then went back to work continuing her daily chores. It was at times like these Sayaka felt alone but just knowing that Minami was there gave her a comforting feeling. At the end of the day, Minami left right at closing time and so she cleaned up and got ready to leave. As she was cleaning, she noticed Minami had left her glasses and so she held onto them. She intended to give them back to her so she kept them somewhere safe. When Sayaka locked up for the night, she started to wonder about her feelings towards Minami. She wanted to break the wall of customer waitress and wanted to go beyond that. She wanted to become friends with Minami and possibly become even more. Therefore that night, Sayaka decided she would break the barrier and actually talk to Minami.
The next day, Sayaka was determined to talk to Minami and so as soon as Minami walked in, Sayaka prepared herself for the big moment. She pulled out the glasses and then took in a deep breath before heading out. She walked out of the kitchen and into the dining area where she saw Minami but she also saw someone else. It was girl with short black hair who was taller than Minami. Sayaka had never seen her before but she didn't want to say anything so she simply walked over and said,
"You left these last night."
She handed Minami her glasses and Minami thanked her for returning them. She then turned to the girl next to her asking what she wanted and she said she wanted a banana parfait. Sayaka obeyed and brought back one where the two shared the ice cream. Then out of nowhere, Minami kissed the girl's cheek. Right there and then Sayaka felt her heart crack a little on the inside. However she knew this was bound to happen since her and Minami never really talked much at all. She was just sad that she couldn't get the chance to become the friend she wanted to be. Seeing there was nothing else to do, Sayaka sucked it up and went back to work doing the best she could to make Minami happy even if she would always be known as the coffee maker.
