Paving through the empty streets at the late hour of ten in the evening of December, a young teenager walks idly with steps slow and heavy, an audible crunch resounding from shoes meeting clumps of snow. The reason for the empty streets was due to the upcoming countdown in the main city with almost all of the people there, waiting while shopping. And although the silence of the streets right now was comforting to her already messed up mind, she couldn’t help but also feel conflicted because of it.
Closing her eyes, she shuddered as the cool breeze strikes her slim frame, a whimper escaping her trembling lips, her arms automatically drew up to embrace herself, rubbing her arms in an attempt to bring even a fraction of warmth to soothe herself from the winter air.
The girl releases a tired sigh as she looked up to the skies; eyes dark without any trace of glow or happiness, she gazed at that one small star from heavens above and bit her bottom lip as a tear slid down from the corner of her eyes to her pale porcelain cheek.
She’s perfectly alone tonight, without anyone by her side to accompany her, and it makes her feel empty because misses that kind bubbly warmth that often accompanies her every day. But just remembering about that person hurts her more, yet somehow, it also brings a bit of comfort through her loneliness even if pain came along as well.
“…Its over…isn’t it?” She mumbled, her words coming off trembling as she spoke while she wiped the lone tear off from her cheeks and looked away to stare at her pair of shoes, the feeling of loneliness still strikes her perfectly well and that sense of loss and emptiness still clinging to her.
She should be angry right now, should have been upset even, but she doesn’t feel any of that, she just longs for that person alone. Her friends all called her silly, even idiotic for never even feeling just as much upset about that person; she herself couldn’t even make up a clear reason just why she never felt anger even after that very important person had lied to her.
The only thing she felt most was that she misses that person’s presence and warmth and it becomes more unbearable now that she feels that looming emptiness insider her heart.
A sob escapes from her mouth, undeniable and uncontrollable. She lets more tears flow down from her cheeks and she didn’t so much wipe them, they would just fall back again continuously. It didn’t matter anymore even, she wouldn’t keep up a façade; she was never truly strong. She’s like everyone else, weak and soft inside. She couldn’t care less if anyone saw her right now, crying her eyes out.
It didn’t matter how she looks right now.
She couldn’t care less, she feels betrayed, felt so left out at that moment. And just where did their promise go?
Was it all a lie in the end?
“You said that there shouldn’t be any secrets between us…” She grudgingly said; her voice breaking as she cried.
“Just where did that promise go?”
Her grip tightens around the small tiny object in her palm, the edges painfully digging into her cold flesh; it’s painful, but not as much painful as what she feels inside her chest, the feeling of something breaking and falling off.
“Was that also a lie…?”
“Yuki…”

The Last Time
----
The walk home was strikingly cold and utterly silent, unbearable but undeniable; she resisted the temptation to stop, knowing that if she did, she would only sink in further to a depressing state. But with each passing moment, each step she took felt heavier than the first just as her heart sank more along with the piling of snow.
…It was no use.She should be feeling happy right now, utterly content and warm inside, Christmas was nearing again, she’d get to see everyone again, but she isn’t. She felt was emptiness and that’s what hurts the most…the feeling of nothing at all.
Shaking her head furiously in attempt to vanquish the thought, she stood on her doorstep, reaching onto the knob with trembling cold hands, turning the knob with a slow twist, but pausing all the same, staring at the block of wood in front of her with conflicted eyes.
If she opened this door now…what face should she make? If she returned with an expression like this, she would just worry everyone inside, she would just end up dragging them in her own state of depression and she wouldn’t want that to happen.
‘…Maybe I shouldn’t have returned early…’ Rena thought glumly with a sad smile forming on her lips, eyes downcast and shadowed by a gleam of hurt and sadness.
‘I’ll just…come back later.’ She sighed, letting her breath turn into a thin fog, tickling her already reddened nose. The young raven withdrew her hand from the knob, letting it click in place before turning around, but not without sending it one last glance before she looked away and took a step away from the doorstep, only to suddenly stop in surprise when the door opened on its own, a small squeak resounding in that cold silent surrounding.
Rena stiffened as she felt the warm air tickle her exposed skin and she shivered at the pleasantry it gave her, she glanced over her shoulder, taking a peek whom had opened the door and saw a petite girl on the doorstep, placing her boots with her hair covering her face but when the girl instantly looked up, Rena immediately knew who it was.
“Ah, Rena-san, you’re here! I was just about to look for you~” The girl smiled happily, her eyes making a cute crescent shape as she beamed in extreme genuine joy; her cheeks noticeable with its rosy colour and plump cuteness that Rena herself couldn’t help but smile back at the buddle of joy that the younger girl was emitting.
“Mhmm… Gomen, did I worry you all?” Rena asked, turning her whole body so she would be facing the shorter girl who approached her cutely with a smile still remaining on her face.
“Mou…you did! Everyone was worried about you since you didn’t pick up for phone. Takamina-san even said that if you weren’t going to be back before this hour ends, she would call for the police…” Miyuki said, trying to mimic the voice of the petite girl whom had said those words while doing animated actions all along to emphasize each word that came out from her out, something of which amused Rena.
“I should probably apologize then…”
“You don’t need to, just as long as you’re safe, everyone is happy~” The shorter raven chirped happily, twirling around while pacing back into the house, but not before taking a peek at her companion who only stood there in the cold, wearing a small smile on her face, yet overshadowed by that air of depression clinging on the taller raven’s slim frame.
“Unn…you’re right, I guess.” Rena mumbled a small reply, trying to sound extremely happy at the notion, but only to fail as her words sunk down coldly.
Miyuki raised a brow, her expression morphing from a happy one to a slightly conflicted look, but she shook her head, resuming her bright joyous expression, knowing it might Rena start worrying and blaming herself.
“Ne, Rena-san, let’s get inside before we catch a cold…” Miyuki said, her expression softening all the same to the older girl who looked stuck in the middle of nowhere with her disheartened state. She somehow already sensed that something was wrong, but pointing it now would be a bit abrupt when the older girl had just come home.
Wordlessly, Rena nodded and walked into the house with Miyuki guiding her as she wore a saddened smile, trying to mask her depression in that state. She couldn’t leave now either, it would just make everyone inside worried more about her, and regardless of what her reasons maybe, they would still keep on worrying.
She’ll just bear with this for now and hope that that empty feeling would settle in somewhere in the back of her mind and leave her until for later when she’s all alone, for now, it was better if she just pushed it out of her consciousness and smile rather than to stay depressed, especially with all the merriment around and the joyous smiles around her.
On Rena’s first step inside the house though, she could not help but succumb to the warm air and the comfortable feeling, a sigh loosely escaping her lips as she felt the comforting air waft around her cold weary body. Seeing the older girl’s reaction, Miyuki giggled while she took off her boots and placing them along a line of other footwear, primarily composed of boots, shoes, snickers and flats with assorted colours, sizes and brands.
Rena amusedly placed her own pair of boots, completing the neatly lined up stack of footwear in the entranceway that numbered more than both of her hands could count before following the other girl inside; wearing a pair of fluffy slipper as they both tread through the hallway of the enormous house of the Matsui’s where the sounds of part music and cheering could be heard aloud.
Closer and closer as they neared, the more the noises grew louder and the more the cheering grew tense, which somehow confused both the of the two girls. Looking at each other with brows raise up, they took a suspicious look at the doorway to the living room before they sceptically walked near the entrance.
“Ah, wait a bit, Rena-san. I’ll peek and see what’s happening…” Miyuki whispered, smiling politely when she received an affirmative nod from Rena before she poke her head to take a peek inside, half of her body hidden as she clutched onto the frame for support while Rena merely stared at her, giggling slightly at the silliness of the younger raven.
When Miyuki peeked inside though, she couldn’t help but freeze instantly at the sight, the poor younger raven almost fell down to the floor from shock and bewilderment that Rena almost thought something bad happened. She would have asked the shorter girl though, but apparently, Miyuki was too stunned to utter anything.
Curious, Rena herself took a peek, and instantly, a rosy hue of pink rushed up to her cheeks as she stared inside with mouth gapped, surprised at the sight of a short haired handsome raven wearing a skimpy Santa costume in the middle of the room, blushing cutely as the others cheered for the shy girl. It was much evident that a certain petite brunette cheered more loudly than the others; grinning a toothy smile with her fangs and dimples evident on her face.
“Wooh! I knew you’d fit in that costume perfectly, Sayaka!” Yuko shouted happily, punching her fist up in the air like an excited child as she cheered for the shy flustered girl.
“Sasuga ne, Yuko, I have to say you were spot on when you said that.” Minami nodded along, chuckling happily, only to let out a disgruntled squeak when an arm wrapped around her neck possessively.
“Ah ahh…I can see it, but why do you seem so happy, seeing Sayaka wear it, hmm?” The girl darkly muttered in irritation that mirrored her facial expression, making the shorter girl look at her companion nervously with fear.
“B-But isn’t it appropriate to react that way…? I mean…how should I react if it’s not that?”
“Saa, who knows…?” Atsuko puffed her cheeks and sighed, burying her head onto the crook of petite girl, hugging her tightly from behind, whispering cutely, slightly envious of the attention her girlfriend was giving to another girl; “I wish you’d only look at me, Minami…”
“Hm…?” The said girl blinked, and tried to peek at Atsuko, before smiling at the cute pouting expression the other girl was wearing.
“Don’t look like that…I like it when you smile since I like the Atsuko that brightly smiles best…” Minami grinned happily, speaking genuinely to the other girl who clung more to her at hearing the loving words of her dear girlfriend, a blush covering her cheeks as the warmth spread through her body like wildfire due to the words that meant so much.
Atsuko’s heart was already thumping faster and loudly too that she choose to just smile and snuggle more into the petite girl, choosing to embrace her in a tender and affectionate way while muttering a small shy “I love you” that also bought a blush to her partner.
“Aw, isn’t that nice…AtsuMina gets to be sweet…mou, I’m jealous~”
“I wish me and Nyan Nyan were like that!” Yuko groaned, puffing her cheeks as she took a quick glance to a certain long haired beauty’s direction, watching her eat cutely before she looked away to gaze back at Atsuko and Minami.
“You two, get a room already…” Yuko begrudgingly muttered, pouting a bit as she stared at the loving couple cuddle up to one another, making both of them even more flustered at the brunette’s words. The other’s merely laughed and agreed with nods and cheers.
“O-Oi, Yuko!! Stop kidding…and you guys…” Minami stuttered as she tried to settle down the cheering of her friends. Sadly, her crowd of friends were more rowdy and kept on cheering even more, even her girlfriend fuelled up the fire with her own words.
“…That doesn’t sound like a bad idea though.” Atsuko mumbled, trailing off in her own thoughts which caused more cheering to occur, leaving Minami more flustered and shier.
“E-Ehh…?”
“Kidding, kidding~” Atsuko smiled, patting the petite girl as she stuck her tongue out, teasing the other girl with her own little joke.
“Ah, that’s not a good joke though.” Yuko piped in, staring at the two with a straight face.
“But isn’t it alright to just place it as a joke?” The girl in the Santa costume commented politely while she tried not to fidget all too much at the skimpiness of the costume she wore as it showed so much of her arms, legs and stomach.
“Eh? Maji?” Another short haired girl quipped, staring at her with curious eyes as she drew close to Yuko and the older short haired raven.
“Would you be alright with a joke like that, Sayanee?” Jurina questioned, staring straight at the older girl who merely fidgeted a bit at the attention that she was receiving from Jurina, in addition with Mayu tagging along with the said girl as she clung to Jurina for warmth. With both girls suddenly staring at her like that, it suddenly made Sayaka more conscious due to her apparel.
“W-Well, yeah? Why wouldn’t I?”
“Ahh…you don’t seem to understand it though.”
Yuko shook her head, sighing in disappointment before looking away, the brunette’s action caught Sayaka’s attention, making her confused and curious as to the brunette’s apparent disappointment and was about to react when Yuko suddenly squealed in joy, pointing at the entranceway of the living room, making everyone look towards the direction of where Yuko was pointing at.
“Ah! They’re here!” Minami grinned, looking relieved at seeing the taller raven with Miyuki.
“Uwah! You came back quite early Milky, with Rena too!” Yuko grinned, pointing at the two flustered girls near the entranceway, somehow startling both of the girls when she shouted out loud, jumping out of her seat as she ran up to Miyuki and Rena, pulling them into a hug like an excited child.
“Yup, I bumped into Rena-san on the way out of the doorstep.” Miyuki smiled, hugging back the older brunette while Rena merely stood there, still flustered, but for a different reason, being too intimately close to someone being the sole primary suspect of her never fading blush.
“That’s great then! It’s good to see that we won’t have to stop Captain Midget here from calling the police.” Yuko snickered, pointing back at the directions of the said girl who violently reacted by pointing a finger at the brunette’s direction.
“Oi, you aren’t that tall enough you know!”
“I’m taller than you though~”
“Why you…” Minami pouted and was about to stand up, when the arms around her waist tightened and pulled her back down, startling her as she sat onto her girlfriend’s lap, whom merely looked at her with ever so kind smile that said “It was alright, I like you the way you are”, or so Minami could translate from it.
Sighing in defeat due her girlfriend’s expression warming her up, Minami sank deeper into Atsuko’s arms, puffing her cheeks cutely as she stared at Yuko begrudgingly while Yuko stuck out her tongue, snickering as she saw Minami huff more, snuggling back into her girlfriend’s comforting embrace as she cooed the petite, the sight nearly as amusing that everyone was already cooing cutely for the two.
Seeing the two comfortable with one another though bought a twinge of pain and jealousy in Rena, seeing them so happy and so free with another, she felt even more terrible inside, but she pushed off the thoughts out of her head as well as the miserable feeling in the pit of her stomach and smiled, smiling happily as she could, hoping that no one would notice.
Miyuki however seemed to have noticed it, seeing as how she had been keeping an eye on the older raven since the very time they stepped inside, though as sneakily as she could of course. She was still worried, still trying to guess what exactly could be the reason for the other girl’s apparent disheartened state since asking her would be too rude and she didn’t want to confront Rena either, knowing that it might be bad to just suddenly ask as it might just cause the older raven to break down.
Sighing, Miyuki puffed her cheeks and stared at her feet, shuffling them slightly as she tried to think a bit more when an arm suddenly slings over her neck, pulling her away from the crowd, causing Miyuki to let out a squeak in response.
“What are you thinking about?” Yuko whispered while smiling at Miyuki, holding the other girl close enough to herself just so only Miyuki could hear her.
“Is it about Rena?” Yuko mumbled while staring at the said girl’s direction, watching the tall raven sit down on the couch with everyone, holding a glass of punch while talking animatedly with everyone else.
Hearing Yuko’s question though somehow startled the younger girl, but when Yuko flashed her that genuine grin, Miyuki couldn’t help but smile back at her sempai and nod before looking back at Rena; “She’s been acting strangely ever since I bumped into her on the way out…like something happened badly since she looked so disheartened.”
“Hmm, you’re right, she looks really down. Mah, it must be involving her again…” Yuko trailed off sadly, shaking her head again.
“Her? Who’s this person?” Miyuki stated curiously which made Yuko smile more, happy that her kouhai was worried for someone’s sake. With a hum of content, Yuko took off her arm and instead, pinched Miyuki’s nose, grinning when the girl’s lips formed into a pout and a muffled groan escaped from her mouth, making the brunette laugh at her kouhai’s reaction.
Chuckling loudly, Yuko flashed a toothy grin and wiped a tear at the corner of her eyes and stared at the younger raven, speaking once more, albeit reassuringly to Miyuki; “Someone that means so much to Rena…her best friend you can say.”
“Mah, thank you for worrying though, but it’s okay now. Leave it to all up me.”
“Yuko-san…”
Miyuki stared at her sempai in awe, seeing her confident somehow reassured Miyuki that everything would be alright, after all, entrusting this kind of things to Yuko was also better, knowing that her sempai was good at mending back relationships and problems with her every so sincere ways. Although Yuko could be a bit of a prankster and pervert, nevertheless, she was a good person who did a job when it was needed and could be serious when the time is needed. And entrusting Yuko their mutual friend’s problem to her is not something that she would regret.
Beaming at her with her eyes forming into crescents, Miyuki nodded eagerly, already reassured; “If Yuko-san says so, then I’ll leave it up to you.”
“Unn! I’ll do something about it, don’t worry…I know just the right thing to do.” Yuko puffed her chest and proudly grinned at the girl before her expression suddenly changes into something of the mischievous kind.
“Demo Milky~ Aren’t you forgetting about something?”
“Hmm? What is it?” The younger tilted her head, looking at Yuko with oblivious eyes, just like a cute little child knowing nothing at all. Smirking, Yuko slung her arm again around the girl’s neck and pulled her close, making her look towards the direction she wanted Miyuki to look at the most.
“Look at Sayaka, Milky… Ain’t she gorgeous in that Santa costume? Aren’t you going do something about it?” Yuko whispered tauntingly at Miyuki while she urged the younger girl to look at the handsome short haired girl donning a Santa costume, sitting on the couch, shyly smiling at everyone.
A blush creeps into Miyuki’s face, the warmth spreading through her face as she stared intently at Sayaka’s enchanting smile, a treacherous dreamy grin forming on Miyuki’s lips as she let herself bask in that warm feeling of awe and wonderment at her older classmate’s bewitching smile.
“Unn…Sayanee looks really cute~” Miyuki whispered dreamily.
“Deshou? Now why don’t you get her you little white tiger~ I don’t want my hard work to make her wear that costume go all to waste!” Yuko exclaimed while pushing Miyuki as hard as she could, grinning when she saw her kouhai squeal as she stumbled towards Sayaka’s direction, falling into the surprised girl’s arms.
Luckily enough, Sayanee caught Milky in her arms and she securely held the girl close to her, a bit afraid that if she let go, Milky would fall off.
“Are you alright, Milky? Are you hurt?” Sayanee stared at the younger girl, worried while scanning for any bruises or wounds on the younger girl, making Miyuki stiffen when Sayaka holds her a bit tightly and albeit too close that she could feel the older girl’s warmth and the scent of her shampoo and perfume.
Blood rushed up into Miyuki’s head, increasing the hue of redness on her cheeks, being too close to the older girl was just too much for her to take that she had to close her eyes and struggle to keep herself from squealing and clinging to her friend. But Sayaka took Miyuki’s silence in a wrong way when the younger girl did not much as say anything to her nor even respond, blinking in confusion, she slightly pulled Miyuki away and stared at her straight into the face to see a cute flustered Miyuki in front of her.
“E-Ehh? Milky? What’s wrong?” Sayaka asked, watching the other girl fidget a bit before opening her eyes to look at Sayaka with shy eyes, darting from her hands to the older raven’s face.
“Y-your too close…S-Sayanee…” Miyuki said in embarrassment as she glanced at Sayaka’s outfit then back at her face before looking away, her face as red as a tomato’s. Seeing Miyuki’s action and reaction made Sayaka’s face even more flustered as she looked at herself then back at Miyuki, whom was now comfortable seated on her lap.
“A-Ahh…” Sayaka merely gaped in response and looked down, flustered at the proximity between her and Miyuki, but didn’t so much as to try and let go of the younger girl sitting on her lap, holding onto her tightly instead, as if afraid to let go of Miyuki.
The other occupants of the room watched in wonder and amusement at the two, finding their sudden shyness to be endearing and entertaining while the rest continued on talking with one another as the party went on, yet one person could still not truly find herself to enjoy the party, not when the feeling of pain still lingers freshly in her heart and mind.
Sighing, she took a quick sip into her glass and stared fished out something from her pocket, staring at it as she traced the lines of the small box in her palm before placing it back inside, shaking her head as she shook off the thoughts of any hope that she could even give it to her.
‘It’s impossible now…’
‘…It’s too late.’----
Hours soon passed quickly with the party still heating up, more drinks and food kept on coming as the girls continued on chatting, playing and dancing to the rhythmic beat of the music while some had just stayed in the corner of the room, resting and smiling as they watched their other friends on the floor. Some went out for a walk or a breather as the heat inside the house was unbearable along with the loud music and the endless chattering.
Rena happened to be one of those people to go out for a bit as she needed a breather due to all the escalating emotions welling up inside her. The party was fun and everyone was kind, meeting them all up to celebrate before Christmas strikes was fun as well as catching up with how everyone else was, but it still didn’t feel right.
It just didn’t sit well on her plate to be happy when there was still a lingering feeling of sadness left in her that needed to be remedied.
Just how? She couldn’t be too sure… With all the things left unsaid, questions piled up into a stack and answers needed to be heard, all that she was left to her were emotions bottled up in a jar, left to be hidden in the dark to rot until dusk comes.
“Yah, how are you, Rena?” A voice softly fluttered in the air, coming from just behind her, startling her as she was asked and without giving much argument, she looked at the sudden intruder and smiled slightly when she saw Yuko approaching her.
“Yuko-san…I’m fine, I guess.” Rena mumbled, looking back to stare at the snow falling slowly down, watching them pile up in a scattered stack.
“Hmm, you guess? That doesn’t seem good…is there something wrong?”
“Nothing…I just needed a breather from the party, that’s all.” Rena tried to excuse herself, hoping Yuko would buy her reason, but then again, it was Yuko that she was talking to. It was useless anyhow to lie to the older brunette when she was sharp about things like reasons and lies.
“Ehh…that’s what it seems like to you, but it isn’t really like that at all.”
“Did something happen with your meeting with her?” Yuko raised a brow, stopping just to stand beside the tall raven as she too took in the sight of the pure white snow falling down from heaven’s above, but seeing them like this with the other girl in this heavy atmosphere wasn’t pleasant even when she mostly liked to go on sightseeing with Rena due to the tall raven knowing so much where to go.
It didn’t seem the same now though with Rena in this kind of state, just being beside her, Yuko could already feel how down the other has been as of lately.
“Ah…you saw right through me, didn’t you…? I guess I can’t hide anything.” The tall beautiful raven sighed, smiling sadly as she turned to look a bit at the older girl, who could only look at her with the same soft expression that Milky gave her earlier. Somehow, it made Rena realize just how transparent she was at that time that she couldn’t help but look down and shuffle her boots, crunching the snow with her weight.
“Mah, of course you can’t. Also, Milky noticed it; she was worried you know since you were troubled when you showed up in the doorsteps. I was also worried you know; you didn’t seem too much into it.”
“I didn’t mean to worry you both…I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine…but tell me, aren’t you going to do something?” Yuko waved a nonchalant hand and grinned in reassurance, before she stared at Rena with a serious expression on her face, one that never seem to appear since Yuko rarely became serious.
“Is it just fine to let things be with you and her? I know I might not know what I’m saying here, but with you two being in bad terms for almost a month, it’s kind of unbearable to watch already.”
The taller girl paused and fidgeted, looking conflicted with the imposed question, debating on it with her mind, but of course, she didn’t want to just let this things to continue on happening. She wanted their relationship back to where it was before, like of the good times, not this conflicted and strained connection that she can merely even call a relationship to begin with.
But what could she do?
She’s already met the end of the road, there was nothing left for her…not a way to use to even reach the other raven…
Nothing at all.
“But…even if I do anything, nothing would happen…” Rena gritted her teeth in frustration, both of her hands clutched into tight fists as she willed herself to stay strong in front of the brunette, hoping that she wouldn’t cry nor let a tear slip from her eyes.
“That’s not true, try to talk to her again, I’m sure she had a reason why…” Yuko smiled, placing a comforting hand on the taller girl’s shoulder, rubbing it slightly as to try to ease her pain with a simple caring gesture.
Rena didn’t seem to feel anything, not when she was being confronted to confront the issues between her strained relationship with the other raven. And she hesitated because of that.
“But—“
“No buts, just go and talk to her again, don’t let Yuki’s blackness get in the way~” The petite brunette gave a toothy grin and smirked as she spoke, inserting a little joke inside her comment, hoping that it would lighten up Rena’s mood, even for a bit. But as much as possible, she would want it if Rena found courage in her words to just confront ‘Black’ head on.
“Yuko-san…”
“Just go…and no matter what happens, don’t give up, just keep on chasing after her until the very end.” Yuko said meaningfully before she hugged the taller girl, giggling when she felt like she was clinging to a tree like a squirrel does when she hugged Rena due to how tall she was.
Rena responded kindly with the hug, embracing the older brunette back gently while murmuring a small thank you before they parted from that short hug.
“Unn…” Rena whispered; staring at the little squirrel-like brunette beside her before nodding and walking off slowly after Yuko gave her a final pat of encouragement.
“That’s more like it!” Yuko shouted and waved as she watch Rena’s figure starting to become smaller and smaller as the distance between them increased, yet Yuko did not as much as want to move from her position, so she stayed rooted in her position and watched the snow fall down gently, her eyes softening at the sight.
The soft crunching sounds of snow behind her alerted Yuko of an incoming person, curious, Yuko was about to look around to look at her new companion, when long slim arms circled around her neck and pulled her into a tight yet tender embrace, her back pressed to someone’s front and a giggle resounding near her ears, the person’s breath tickling her already red ears, but Yuko relaxed, finding comfort in the arms of her captor.
“Yuu-chan sure is nice…~” The intruder sighed softly, her words coming out in a soothing harmonious note that seemed music to Yuko’s ears. Immediately, Yuko turned around and grinned, looking happy at Haruna, who was also grinning at her.
“Nyan Nyan…!” Yuko squealed and nuzzled her face onto the crook of Haruna’s neck while she wrapped her arms around the taller brunette’s neck, clinging to the other girl.
“Yuu-chan is really like a squirrel~”
“But, seeing Yuu-chan help Rena-chan makes me proud of Yuu-chan…” Haruna trailed off softly while she let Yuko embrace her, she herself tracing small circles on Yuko’s back. Both not minding the cold temperature due to the warmth both of their bodies emitted, their embrace itself was enough to warm up themselves under that snowy night, and Yuko found it a nice excuse to hug Haruna as much as she wanted.
Sighing, Yuko nuzzled deeper into Haruna’s neck and giggled softly.
“Hehe…thank you Nyan Nyan~”
----
Moments fleeting, time passing, but a renewed persistence to keep on chasing, Rena walked through the same empty streets that she had paved through earlier with a purpose in mind, her hand stuffed, clutching on the little present inside her coat’s pocket as she walked as fast as she could through the snow cluttered road.
Her mind circling around onto Yuko’s words, finding courage and comfort in the reassurance of what the older girl had said and remembering it again made her smile, finding herself ease up at the encouragement she found in another person who also seemed to have gone to the same struggle as her.
She always knew that Yuko had gone through this herself that’s why she could say something as to keep on chasing after someone, oh so easily. She had been chasing after Haruna for so long, even until five years ago, she still did, and she still kept persisting until she finally caught the taller girl.
It had been a rough journey for Yuko, along with all those heartbreaks and tears that she kept on enduring because of Haruna’s resistance, she still held on firmly, trusting her heart and soul as it led her to the other girl until she had her where she wanted.
Rena found Yuko’s perseverance and persistence awe-inspiring and how she never gave up on Haruna, even when everything was going tough. Even Atsuko and Miyuki were also somewhat the same as Yuko. They were also there, chasing and waiting, hoping for their loved ones to see their affections.
Although Miyuki has yet to have Sayaka fully see the true extent of her own feelings, Rena saw the connection between them earlier, and sooner or later, the two of them would eventually have to come clean with their own feelings for one another. Atsuko herself now found happiness in her love for Minami after the other petite girl had found out their love was mutual, though both scared at first to come in terms with their own feelings, they were able to work it all out in the end.
Now it was time for her to do the same, just like them, she will persist and tell her own true feelings straight up without hesitation. It was after all time to stop sulking and halting in front of the middle of nowhere.
She’ll make it happen now.
She might be a little too late but it didn’t matter as long as she’s said her own side, she won’t regret it.
From walking to running, it all happened fast, Rena couldn’t even remember when she started to run instead of walk or how her legs kept working, kept on running as she passed through each building and each trees, hoping to get closer, to get nearer to destination. She couldn’t even see someone in front of her, suddenly popping in front of her all of a sudden until she crashed into that person.
Luckily, the snow cushioned of the two from the fall, with the other person landing on the snow with its back on the cold surface and with all four of Rena’s limbs propped to support herself from fully placing her weight on the person below her.
Rena let out a groan, eyes closed tightly, her head slightly painful just as her shoulder due to the impact of bumping onto someone; with a hand placed on her forehead, she lightly massaged it, hoping to ease a bit of her pain while she took a peek at the before below her, her mouth opening as to ask the person below her of its condition, but sadly, all words she planned on saying were erased, only left with blankness as she stared at the face of the beautiful raven below her.
“Ahh…” Rena quietly let out, her mind going completely blank and her stomach lurching all of a sudden at the sight of her below Rena.
Yes, Kashiwagi Yuki, her best friend; the person who had hurt her so much yet at the same time made her happy, and here she was, right beneath her, staring at her with a shocked expression on her charcoal black eyes, her mouth agape in a small ‘o’, her reactions still ever so priceless as ever that Rena couldn’t help but to let a smile curve on her lips at the sight of Yuki’s expression.
“Still the same as ever…” Rena whispered, chuckling slightly while she moved away from the stunned raven. Rena stood up, dusting off the snow that was starting to clatter from her head and shoulders due to the never ending downfall of the small icy substance. Yet never did Yuki looked away from Rena, even when the coldness of the snow on her back was becoming unbearable, she just kept on lying there, watching as the angelic figure of her best friend moved elegantly while sweeping off the snow off her clothes.
Noticing eyes on her, Rena halted her actions and glanced at the directions of where she sensed those eyes looking at her and came upon to stare at Yuki, eye to eye. And breathlessly, Rena tried to hold onto herself, hoping to control her emotions from spilling as she tried to shrug off her nervousness, politely smiling at Yuki as she held up her hand for the older raven to take.
“Here…I’ll help you up.” Rena spoke softly, offering her help in an attempt to break that silence from dawning back between them. At first Yuki could not help but stare wide eye at the hand in front of her, but with her eyes darting back and forth from Rena’s face and her hand, she felt a reassurance that Rena was really lending her a hand.
A small smile suddenly forms on Yuki’s lips and her charcoal black eyes sparkling with a light of happiness inside, mirroring her facial expression.
Wordlessly, she took the hand Rena offered her and clutched onto the pale dainty hand with her own as she was pulled up to stand up, the snow falling off her clothes back to the ground as her foot settled up to root herself up properly. Yuki didn’t let go though, instead, she held onto Rena’s hand as tight as possible, but without having to exert any pain onto the other girl than what was appropriate and necessary at that moment.
Rena was a bit startled though when Yuki still kept on holding her hand without even any hints of wanting to let go, but it made her happy though, even when there was this lingering feeling of that pain in her heart.
“…It’s surprising to bump into you tonight.” Rena started off, knowing that if she didn’t talk, no one would. She just half hoped that Yuki also talk back to her. And gladly, the other raven did, without as much as any hesitation.
“It is…I thought…I’d never see you actually.”
“Why?” Rena asked, wide eye at the taller raven’s revelation.
“Why…you say…that time when you left my apartment earlier…I felt like I wouldn’t see you again after what I said to you.” Yuki admitted, a bit ashamed of herself. She fidgeted, toying with the hem of her sleeves as she averted her eyes.
“Seeing you cry like that was painful, I wanted to run after you, knowing how much you just wanted to mend our friendship back into place…but I just couldn’t bear it, I couldn’t stomach with just continuing on like that…” Yuki closed her eyes, letting all of her feelings flow as she talked and said what she truly felt inside her heart; “I wanted more. I don’t just want both of us stuck in one place, with our paths separated, so close yet too far away…I wanted to be near you, more than anyone else. I never meant what I said about you. I just wanted to be more than just your best friend.”
It didn’t matter that she would end up getting hurt after this, she was tired of bottling her feelings up, it was time she opened the lid and let it all out. She had to be truthful or else both she and Rena would just keep on hurting each other.
If there was someone who was needed to be hurt, she was willing to be the one to receive the pain; it was already enough that Rena had been hurt from the last of their argument. This time, she would take it all down if she was going to sink in the bottom.
“I wanted more. I don’t just want both of us stuck in one place, with our paths separated, so close yet too far away…I wanted to be near you, more than anyone else. I never meant what I said about you. I just wanted to be more than just your best friend.”
“I-I’m sorry…I never meant to hurt you and push you away, I just…I just couldn’t help it. I love you so much that it’s all piling up and I don’t know what to do…” Yuki said, her voice trembling as she felt weakened with all of her feelings left out in the open in front of her best friend that she had to fight back the oncoming outpour of her own tears from flowing and from showing.
It didn’t help that Rena just stared at her, surprised and stunned, it felt as if the world had closed down on her, felt as if she had just said something she shouldn’t have, but it was better this way, better than just hiding away from Rena and her feelings, or to even let all of the lies from piling up.
If her feelings would keep on just being one-sided, Yuki didn’t care, at least it was all out, and if this was how their relationship would end, then so be it…at least she got to try in the end, she believed in Tomomi’s words and Sae’s reassurance, she wouldn’t regret on talking the first step.
“Yuki…” Rena muttered her friend’s name as a tear slowly slid down her cheeks, followed by another. Her heart finally enlightened, only filled with reassurance and content as well as a swelling of love and joy that she couldn’t help but to reach for the older raven.
Yuki’s world started to spin around at that moment, spinning full of colours and warmth when she was pulled into an embrace and was held close as Rena clung to her desperately under that snowy night, crying softly, with the younger raven’s shoulders trembling as she cried, mumbling incoherence all the way as she sobbed, over and over, apologizing all the same like a mantra.
“I love you…I love you too…just as much.” Rena said as cried. And hearing her confession, finally, letting the dam burst without a care, Yuki cried, clutching onto Rena’s clothes desperately as she cried into the younger girl’s shoulders, holding her for support as if she was the only thing left that she had.
They stood there, crying, holding onto each other, letting their feelings out even as the night drew deeper, and after what seemed to be an eternity, they finally pulled apart, wiping the tears off their eyes with smiles on their faces.
Rena found delight in seeing Yuki’s smile as her heart grew warmer and her stomach fluttered pleasantly, sighing, she nuzzled her nose onto Yuki’s own in a bold attempt to convey her affection, making Yuki blush and smile lovingly.
“…The sign of this snow’s fall would be the last time we’ll be friends.” Rena mumbled, her hand rummaging for the small gift in her pocket, which Yuki watch in curiosity and wonderment, and was surprised when Rena presented her a small little cute box.
“This would be a sign for more…I wanted to present it to you in hopes to mend our friendship…but since it’s already done, I want to use it as a pledge.” Rena shyly said, still smiling at Yuki, who suddenly became flustered at just what exactly the other girl meant, it didn’t mean that she wasn’t smiling though, in fact, she was, from genuine happiness and content.
“Can I open this?” Yuki looked expectantly like a cute child, which Rena could not help but be amused of, and gave her consent with a breathless “yes”. And Yuki opened the small box once she had the other girl’s permission, nearly crying again at the sight of the ring inside the box, a small letter inside the small box, written as this;
[ Let’s move on together into the future, together. Even if we keep on hurting and fighting, I hope we can still keep on coming back together, stronger than ever until the very end. ]----
