Violin Strings
Matsui Rena stared at her reflection and sighed. She was wearing a short white dress with a high neckline and white pumps. Her long black hair was styled in a simple, but elegant hairdo. Her make-up most would say was too light and yet it was way heavier than what Rena was used to wearing. The girl looking back at her in the mirror looked nothing like her. The normal Rena wore simple clothes, her hair in a ponytail, and low sensible shoes. She wasn’t a fashion disaster as some might say, but she wasn’t exactly a fashion queen either. Rena didn’t know if her now stylish pretty reflection pleased her or just made her feel uncomfortable. She was leaning more towards the latter. She was never of fan of wearing such flashy clothes. She hated drawing attention to herself. Rena was broken away from her thoughts when she heard a faint knock on her door. “Coming!” Rena yelled as she tried to make her way to the door without falling. Stupid high heel shoes, Rena cursed mentally as she narrowly avoided a probably disastrous fall.
Finally Rena opened the door to reveal her best friend, Kashiwagi Yuki, on the other side. Yuki was even more dressed up than Rena wearing a more elaborate hairdo with a pretty braid on the side, a long red strapless dress, and huge crystal earrings. Yuki looked like she was going to some type of fancy ball while Rena looked like she was going to a semi-formal restaurant. Rena raised an eyebrow at her friend’s attire. “Don’t you think you are a little overdressed?” Rena asked her friend gesturing towards her dress. Yuki merely chuckled at this statement. “If anything you’re the one that is a little underdressed. These things are supposed to be really elegant. You don’t have any jewelry?” Yuki questioned. “Yuki you know I don’t like that sort of thing so I don’t even own jewelry,” Rena answered slightly defensively. Rena didn’t see anything wrong with her outfit. It was nice the way it was. Jewelry would be way too much in her opinion. Yuki sighed in defeat. Rena was never going to change. “Have it your way. Let’s go before we run late,” Yuki told her. Rena nodded and quickly grabbed her purse.
The two girls were headed to a concert venue in Sunshine Sakae to watch the world-renowned Saito Kinen Orchestra perform. The two girls were huge fans of classical music and were beyond trilled when they learned the orchestra was performing so close to home. It was a dream come true. The only downside at least to Rena was that those types of events required dressing up in evening wear. Rena wasn’t one for that sort of thing since she was a rather awkward person, but she wasn’t going to miss out on such an amazing opportunity to hear her favorite orchestra live. Even if she had to wear shoes that made her stumble every time she took a step. “Hey I hear this local seventeen year old prodigy is opening the show with a violin solo. Supposedly she is really amazing,” Yuki informed Rena as they got into the car. Rena’s eyes widen in sheer surprise. “A seventeen year old?! That’s insane! There are countless of well-seasoned musicians that would kill for that spot. That girl must be truly skilled!” Rena exclaimed a bit overexcited. The violin was her favorite instrument and it wasn’t often you got to hear a good solo. Still a seventeen year old. That was truly amazing.
At seventeen Rena’s biggest accomplishment was getting out of bed to go to school on her own. She could never picture herself doing something so big at that age. “I know right? I guess some people just have some crazy natural ability,” Yuki commented thoughtfully. Rena nodded in agreement. Finally the two arrived at the venue and gave their tickets at the gate. Although they were already inside the venue there was a huge line to go into the concert hall where the concert was taking place and Rena felt her natural processes begin to bug her. “Hey can you save my seat? I need to go to the restroom,” Rena told her friend. Yuki nodded, “Sure go ahead, but don’t take too long. The show starts in ten minutes.” “Thanks,” Rena said and looked around searching for the restroom. The venue was huge and the hallways long. Maybe the restroom was a bit further down. Rena began walked aimlessly her feet aching since she was not used to walking in high heels. It didn’t take long for her to get lost. Completely and utterly lost. Rena sighed. I guess I should give up on finding the restroom if I don’t want to miss the show, Rena thought.
Rena took a couple of steps backwards trying to head back to the venue, but there was two hallways to take and Rena couldn’t figure out from which she came from. She been walking for a long time so if she went the wrong way she would be wasting a lot of time. At this rate she was going to miss the show. Rena felt stupid for not thinking of asking for directions in such a huge place. The hallway she was in was empty so there was no one she could ask now. Rena resisted the urge to cry. She spend hundred dollars in that ticket and she didn’t know if the orchestra would come back to perform to Nagoya. She wanted to text Yuki, but at the same time she didn’t want her friend to miss part of the show because of her absentmindedness. “Are you lost?” a voice suddenly asked behind her throwing Rena off guard. Rena lost her balance and began her descend downwards until a pair of hands secured her waist helping her regain her balance. Rena looked over her shoulder to find herself looking at the most beautiful girl she ever seen. The girl had friendly, yet cool dark brown eyes and jet black hair. Rena couldn’t think of any adequate words to describe her because she felt everything paled in comparison. She looked like something straight out of a dream. Rena didn’t immediately answer her question too dazed to remember what the girl had asked.
“I am sorry. I didn’t mean to fright you,” The girl told her making Rena come to her senses. She had been gawking at a total stranger for goodness sake! Her face immediately redden and she instantly stepped away from the girl. Rena was once more awestruck by the girl’s looks now that she got a better look at her. The girl was wearing a long black dress that clung to her body and simple, but long crystal earrings. Her attire was not utterly elaborate, and yet that was all she needed to make Rena feel horribly underdressed. She regretted not listening to Yuki. “It’s alright. I just got lost looking for the restroom that’s all,” Rena explained trying her best to not seem like she was staring at the girl. Which she was kind of was. It was a bit hard not to. The pretty girl smiled and gestured to the doors ahead that read “Staff Restroom”. “You may use those if you like,” the girl told her. “B-But wouldn’t I get into some sort of trouble for that?” Rena questioned not being one for breaking the rules. Call her uptight, but the idea simply bothered her. She had always been a good kid her mom would always say. The taller girl flashed her a cheshire smile and tossed something at her. Rena caught it, but just barely her hands fumbling. Rena found a black card in her hands. It had a string attached that allowed you to put it around your neck and the word “Staff” was written in bold sliver letters. Rena looked back at the girl with a confused look in her face. “You work here?” Rena asked wondering why a staff member would be dressed so fancy. It didn’t make any sense to her. The girl mysterious chuckled and shook her head. “Not quite. I am just temporary helping out with the orchestra thing so I was given the card,” the girl answered giving a rather vague response.
Rena wanted to ask more since the answer was so bizarre, but the word orchestra reminded her she only had a couple of minutes before the show began. “Thanks,” Rena told the girl and made her way to the restroom. Luckily for her it was unoccupied. The restroom was a one person restroom so the other girl politely waited outside for Rena to get out. Once out of the restroom, Rena realized there was only two minutes left for the show to begin. She needed to get back to the concert hall as soon as possible. After giving the card back to the girl, Rena asked, “Is there any way you can take me back to the main concert hall?” The girl bit her lip and shook her head sadly. “I need to get going backstage now, but if you wait here I can take you after the intro performance.” After the intro performance…
That meant Rena would miss the violin solo. Rena bit her lip. She really wanted to see the performance. “Are you sure? I was really looking forward to that performance…” Rena’s voice trailed off her voice a bit down. The girl looked surprised. “You were? But that is only a regular local girl performing,” the girl pointed out. Rena looked thoughtful and then said, “True, but to be performing with such a famous orchestra at such a young age she must be amazing. Not to mention I love the violin.” The girl suddenly smiled then she looked conflicted then determined. “Oh screw it,” she said and grabbed Rena’s hand. Rena felt her cheeks heat up at the intimate gesture and struggled to follow the girl’s lead. Rena’s heart was beating fast causing her to become confused. It was only another girl holding her hand so why would her heart be beating… Fast?
“W-W-Where are we going?” Rena managed to ask the girl after catching her breath. The girl looked back at Rena and grinned. “Say how do you feel about watching the performance backstage? I’ll even introduce you to the violin player,” the girl said with a mischievous grin. Rena’s eyes widen. “Really?!” Rena asked her voice excited at the prospect. She never thought something like that could happen to her. Sure it wasn’t something incredibly amazing if you thought about, but Rena found it exciting nonetheless. “Really, but we better hurry or we miss the show,” the taller girl answered. The girl rushed them backstage where they were greeted by another staff member. This member however was dressed in a regular uniform instead of being dressed elegantly. Rena, however, didn’t put much thought into this. “Get to the waiting area. Your stuff is already there. You will be called soon and who is this?” the staff member whose name tag read Takahashi barked. Rena suddenly felt like she was intruding, but the other girl wasn’t even frazzled by this. Maybe she was used to it. “Just a friend and I’ll be there soon don’t worry,” the girl reassured the staff member. The other girl seemed to relax at her words a bit. “Okay just hurry,” the staff member answered shooing them away.
The mysterious girl took her to the part of the backstage where the performers walk in and out of the main stage. From there Rena could see Yuki sitting in the front row sitting next to an emotionless, yet very cute girl. There were no seats next to her. She could tell Yuki was fuming her phone in her hands. She was probably texting her she couldn’t find a seat. Sure enough her phone began to vibrate in her purse. Rena pulled it out and read:
Yuki: Where the hell are you? I couldn’t save a seat cause some idiot refused to accept the concept that I saved it for someone.Rena chuckled picturing how that argument might have been like. Yuki was sweet, but she could be rather stubborn at times.
Rena: It’s alright and ummm somehow I ended up backstage. Long story, but I probably will watch the show from here. Don’t worry about it.With that Rena put the phone away. One minute till the show started. “I hope you enjoy the performance,” the short girl said behind her. Rena jumped a little. She had forgotten she was there for a brief moment. “Yeah,” was all Rena answered a light tint of pink in her cheeks. Maybe it was her imagination, but the girl’s voice sounded slightly… Seductive? The announcer passed by them and finally made it to the mic to announce the first performance. Rena thought it was odd. The violin player was nowhere to be seen and yet the violin was right next to the stage ready to go. However before Rena could ask the girl next to her the announcer said, “Please welcome to the stage our very own prodigy, Matsui Jurina.” Rena spun around, but she found no one, but the odd girl behind her grabbing the violin case. Then it hit her. “You’re the violin player…” Rena’s voice trailed off at the end for she was so surprised. The girl, Jurina, simply smiled and said, “And here I thought you’ll never catch on.” She took off again walking towards the stage leaving a confused Rena behind. She been talking to a seventeen year old?!?! But Jurina looked her age or older! It was unbelievable! Jurina smiled at the audience and leaned into the mic. “I’ll be performing Bach’s Sonata No.1 in G minor. I hope you guys enjoy,” Jurina stated. There was a slight moment of silence and then Jurina began to play. It was beautiful. Nothing could describe the feeling Rena felt when she heard such wonderful music. She was completely swept away by the mere power of Jurina’s performance. And it wasn’t just that. The girl’s grace while she played was mesmerizing. Rena couldn’t take her eyes off her. Something about it made her heart beat faster and Rena wasn’t sure if it was the music or the beautiful girl. Maybe it was both. Once the performance finished the concert arena was full of loud applauses. Jurina bowed and joined her back stage.
Rena suddenly felt awkward recalling her words to Jurina earlier about the violin player that turned out to be her. Hopefully she didn’t think she was weird or anything. Why did Rena always have to say the first thing that came into her mind? “So did you like it?” Jurina asked shyly as she set her violin down. “Like it? That was amazing!” Rena blurted out not believing that the younger girl was asking her that question. How could she not see how wonderful her playing was? Even when Rena brought it up earlier she didn’t seem too confident in it. Rena couldn’t fathom the reason. Jurina smiled. “I am glad. I really wanted to impress you considering you are a violin fan and all,” Jurina told her flashing her a catlike smile. Rena felt her heart speed up once more.
What is this feeling? My heart won’t seem to settle down…“R-Really? Well you did,” Rena answered nervously. Jurina grinned and said, “Anyways we need to move since the orchestra will be coming through soon. Do you wanna see something interesting? You won’t regret it I promise,” Jurina said before taking Rena’s hand once more. Rena blushed and then it hit her.
Oh god I think I might like this girl… What are you saying Rena? She is way younger than you! “W-Where are we going?” Rena asked as Jurina dragged her up some stairs that led to a higher ground in the stage. “You’ll see soon enough. It will be worth it. I promise,” Jurina said with a dazzling smile. Rena felt herself blush at how cute the girl looked. Rena felt a bit odd. She never ever in her life felt attracted to someone especially another girl, but something about Jurina was making her heart beat faster for some reason. Was this what people called love at first sight? “Watch your step,” Jurina warned as she stepped on a platform that overlooked the stage.
Rena nodded a little scared since they were far from the ground already. She wasn’t scared of heights per say, but she wasn’t sure if what they were doing was safe. She didn’t hesitate to voice these concerns. “Matsui-san are you sure this is safe?” Rena asked in a worried tone. “Call me Jurina. And don’t worry this is perfectly save. I been here several times this week while helping out. Hurry up and join me. You don’t know what you are missing,” Jurina urged her. Rena blushed at the bold request and nodded. “Alright Jurina-san,” Rena mumbled a bit embarrassed. She couldn’t believe a girl six years younger than her was making her so nervous. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Jurina chuckled at this and said.
“Drop the –san. There is no need to be so formal. Come to think of it I never even got your name,” Jurina commented. Rena finally reached the top and hoisted herself up with the help of Jurina. She couldn’t help, but to feel butterflies in her stomach when Jurina touched her hands to pull her up. “It’s Matsui Rena,” Rena finally said when she landed in firm ground. “Oh we have the same surname!” the younger girl exclaimed excitedly. Rena smiled at this. She was just too adorable. Were all seventeen year olds like this or was it a Jurina thing? Jurina started walking on the platform which scared Rena to death, but she followed nonetheless careful not to look down. Finally Jurina stopped and sat down. Rena joined her, but was oddly confused. Then she heard the orchestra and she looked down.
Below been she would see the concert from the most amazing view and the sound was amazing. It was amazing! “Do you regret coming?” Jurina asked. Almost as if she was worried Rena didn’t like the place she took her to. “Are you kidding? This is amazing! I bet it sounds better than the actual audience seats!” Rena exclaimed happily. “You have a pretty smile,” Jurina suddenly blurted out causing both Rena and Jurina to turn bright red in the process. Rena looked down at the orchestra and shyly mumbled, “Thank you.” It was nice watching the orchestra, but the air seemed slightly… Tense after Jurina’s compliment. Both girls were suddenly too shy to talk and lucky the show gave them an excuse to stay quiet. Finally the show was over and Jurina stood up extending her hand to help Rena. Rena took it gratefully. She hadn’t expected much by doing that, but suddenly Jurina pulled her towards her and pressed her lips against Rena’s.
Rena could only turn red and stare at the young girl in shock as soft lips assaulted her own. If Rena thought her heart was beating faster before it was nothing compared to the speed in which it was beating now. While she would very much like to kiss the girl back she was too shocked to even move. Jurina pulled away quickly her face guarded. She took two steps back from Rena. “Sorry that was rash of me,” the younger girl said softly her voice breaking. Rena stared at her awestruck. It was only until Jurina turned around to leave that she began to panic at the thought of the girl completely misunderstanding her. “It’s not like I hated it,” Rena managed to say her lips still tingling from the kiss.
Jurina spun around surprised. “You didn’t?” She asked in a hopeful voice. Rena shook her head in response. “I was just surprised that all. It was a bit sudden and I didn’t know how to react,” Rena admitted too embarrassed to even look at Jurina. Jurina stepped closer to Rena until their faces were only inches apart. “So then you don’t mind if I do it again?” Jurina asked softly eyeing Rena’s lips. This time it was Rena’s turn to shock Jurina by closing the space between them. Jurina instantly began kissing her back wrapping her arms around her neck pushing them closer. The kiss was longer than the first and much more passionate. Rena couldn’t believe she was having her first kiss with a total stranger and yet it felt right. The two pulled away out of breath both smiling. “You should give me your number,” Jurina said a bit out of breath because of the kiss. Rena smiled and kissed the girl’s forehead. “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure you leave with it,” Rena reassured her. And so Rena did give Jurina her number. Two weeks later the two went on their first date and the rest is history. And while Rena did feel slightly bad for ditching Yuki that day, Yuki did end up kissing someone later on the night as well so it all worked out perfectly.
