The Sweetest Taste
Chapter 13Tonight is finally Christmas Eve. I’m still at my place waiting for Tomo to pick me up. We decided to go to Sayaka’s place together. My door bell rings. I know it’s her already. I get my things and open my door.
“Merry Christmas, Tomochin!” She greeted me.
“Tomo! Merry Christmas, too! Sorry, my place is a bit messy right now. Let’s go?”
We left my place and went straight to Sayaka’s.
“Merry Christmas!” We both said as her door opened.
“Guys, you’re finally here! We've been waiting for the two of you.” Sae greeted.
“Merry Christmas! Please come in.” Sayaka welcomed us.
We went inside and saw their two other friends who they also invited.
“A-Akiko?” Tomo was surprised to see a familiar face.
“Hi Tomo~mi! Merry Christmas!” She greeted her.
“I didn’t know that you're friends with Sae and Sayaka.” Tomo said.
“Tomochin, this is Narumi Akiko. She’s my office secretary.” She introduced her.
“Please call me Akiko, it’s nice to finally meet you.” She bowed.
“Itano Tomomi desu, but you may call me Tomochin. It’s nice to meet you, too.”
I was then also surprised to see the guy sitting beside her. So he’s now friends with them, too?
“You never mention you have a good-looking boyfriend.” Tomo teasingly told her.
“I think I saw him somewhere before, but I can’t remember.” She continued.
“H-He's not my boyfriend!!!” Akiko said in a loud voice.
“Oh Chief, why so defensive?” He called her chief?
“I’m Philip’s friend. You already met me at his welcome party before.” He’s now talking to Tomo.
“I’m sorry if you had a very bad impression of me and my friends back there. I'm Terui Ryu, please call me Ryu.” After introducing himself, he then turned to me.
“Itano-san, I believe this is not the second time you see me.” He smiled.
“Tomo-mi, Ryu is the person I’m talking about who collects cars.”
Sayaka joined the conversation.
“Sayaka mentioned that you’re planning to sell your car. Do you mind if I take a look at it later?”
Tomo nodded at him.
I grabbed Sae and Sayaka to the side.
“You guys have some explaining to do here.”
I whispered.
“We’ll explain all the details later on, Tomochin.”
Sayaka answered.
“But since everybody’s now here, let’s get the party started!”
Sae shouted.
Sayaka prepared all the food and they taste really delicious. We had good conversations. We laughed at Sae’s jokes. We teased Ryu and Akiko on how cute they look together. I can also see how Tomo’s enjoying the night so much.
The party ended well and it seemed pretty normal to me. I guess I've been too much suspicious on my friends. Ryu first left the place, then few hours later Tomo and I also decided to go home.
“Ryu liked the car and he's willing to buy it for its original price.”
Tomo said driving.
“Really? Did you ask why?”
“Yes, he said he only wanted to help and that will make Akiko happy. He seems a nice guy after all.”
So it means, he also has an idea of what’s going on. That guy's a bully to Akiko but he obviously cares for her. I thought.
We finally arrived at my place.
“Thanks for driving me home, Tomo. Sorry, I haven’t invited you inside yet.”
I apologized.
“It’s okay, maybe some other time?” She asked.
“Ofcourse, I promise.”

The next morning, I received a message from Sae.
To: Tomochin
Hope you guys had fun last night! Sayaka and I will take a week leave.
We’ll be back on or before New Year’s Day. Happy Holidays!
From: Sae
Whaaatt?! So this is their biggest plan! This is the most unusual thing they’ve ever done. They never let me handle the cafe alone for too long, especially on a peak season! They better have a very good explanation on this.
“Ohayou gozaimasu!” Tomo arrived at the cafe.
“Where's everyone else?”
She asked and I lent her my phone to let her read Sae’s message.
“So they're on vacation, too?”
“Too?” I repeated.
“Akiko and Ryu mentioned last night that they’re leaving for vacation today. You think they're all together?”
If that’s true, then why they didn’t invite us?
“Oh Christmas vacation! I'm jealous!”
Tomo said out loud. I then looked at her.
“Jodan da yo! I'm at my happiest as long as I’m with Tomochin!”
She looks sincere saying that. Then I thought of something I really want to do.
“Tomo.. let's not open the cafe today. How about.. we spend Christmas day somewhere else?”
I shyly asked.
“Eh? Is Tomochin asking me out for a date?”
I think she’s surprised to hear what I just said.
“Uhm.. well, we still never go out on a real date as official lovers yet. So I'm thinking, maybe…”
My voice suddenly sounded shaky.
“Ofcourse, I would love to!!!” She jumped to hug me.
She seems really excited. And I am too.
“So where do you want to go?” I asked.
“I want to see the whole Tokyo with Tomochin!”
“Tomo, we can't possibly tour Tokyo in one day.”
She pouted. How can I resist that cutest pout?
“Okay, I have an idea. Just come with me.”
I told her then we got in my car.
We went to a famous shopping mall near Tokyo bay. We hold hands as we get there, our fingers intertwined. So this is how a real date feels like. It’s cold season yet I feel so warm inside. We began to explore the place. Tomo entered a jewelry shop, she's looking at a pair of rings. When she left, I take a look at it. ¥35,000! Pricey! But I know it will look really pretty on her. Then we also took pictures of us together, with some big statues and life-size figures we saw as we walk around the place. We watch the sunset together, then after that we ate dinner at a restaurant near the bay.
“Tomo, aren't you done with your food yet?” I asked her.
"Almost, why you ask?"
I looked at my watch.
“It's time. Come on! You want to see whole Tokyo, right?”
I dragged her excitedly after dinner, heading to the famous giant ferris wheel in the place. We ride on it, then we slowly reached the top.
“Kireiiii!!! The city lights are like stars in the sky! Look, Tomochin! We can even see Mt. Fuji from here!" She sounded so amazed.
I'm happy she's enjoying the view of Tokyo.
"Have you been here before, Tomochin?” She asked.
“No, it's my first time here. I heard the overlooking of Tokyo from here is really beautiful especially at night."
"Yokatta ne.. Finally, we can able to share our firsts together in a place we've both never been before." She smiled.
“Tomo, uhm.. there’s something I want to give you.”
I reached for my coat's pocket.
“I saw you looking at them earlier. I can’t think of a Christmas present to give you so here... Merry Christmas.”
She opened the small box I gave her.
“Tomochin! Arigatou!”
She hugged me out of her surprise.
"Can we wear them already?
She requested.
"Sure, I just hope they fit well."
"They're perfect on us!"
She said as we both try the pair of rings on.
"I actually had our first names engraved on them. There, look closely."
"Oh, Tomochin..."
She's now staring at my face.
"Can I kiss you?”
“Eh? Y-You mean here? R-Right now? Our gondola is on its way down.. Someone might..."
She still kissed me on my lips. My defenses suddenly disappeared.
“Mmm.. Okay..” Then I kissed her back.

I drive her home and we arrived at her place.
“Are you sure you don't want to stay the night?” She asked.
“It's okay. I’ll just see you again at the cafe tomorrow.”
“Tomochin, thank you for today. This is the best Christmas I ever had."
"Me too. You just don't know how happy I am to spend this special day with you."
I gave her a kiss on her cheek before she gets out the car.
When I finally reached home, I went straight to my kitchen. I paused and took a deep sigh.
“Look, you're almost done.”
Tears began dropping like heavy rainfall as I stare at the wedding cake in front of me.
