Rappappa Stories
« on: March 08, 2015, 12:55:27 PM »
Just a piece of light nonsense I wrote.  For the record, I love Erika Ikuta and think she's a fantastic singer and pianist (and her performance on Teppen was brilliant). ^^

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Audition

Ikuchan finished her solo with a flourish.  After a moment’s pause, she exhaled, nodded her satisfaction and opened her eyes.  She looked expectantly at the girls in front of her.  They looked back.  Or some of them did anyway.  Her heart sank a little.

“Well?”

Yūko, the club president, was flopped in her armchair, a hand over her eyes.  Sado, the tall vice president, was staring blankly at her, her kendama hanging forgotten at her side.  Black, who had been there at the start of her solo, seemed to have disappeared.  Shibuya was sprawled on the couch, snoring gently, while Torigoya, sitting next to her, played absently with her curly pink highlights.  Nobody was clapping.
Gekikara, who had spent much of the last few minutes hunched in a corner, scribbling on a piece of sheet music with crayons, was happily waving her handiwork at her.  Ikuchan peered at the drawing and wondered why the pianist was missing her head.  Gekikara giggled and waved at her.  She smiled weakly back.

“You know…”, Yūko said finally, without moving.  “Rappappa is a wind instrument club.”

A pause.

“Ah, yes.  But….you know…I thought…”

Another pause.

“…you’d be interested in having a pianist in your band,” she finished weakly.

“Our band?”

Torigoya eyed the grand piano with some interest.

“How did you get that up here?”

“Ah…”

“Besides,” Yūko continued.  “Can you play anything other than Camptown Races?”

Ikuchan felt herself getting flustered.  Nobody had ever used such a disparaging tone with her before.

“I…well…yes.  Are you, are YOU INSINUATING…”

She realised she was starting to shout.

“Are you insinuating that…that I’m not good enough to be in your…” – she looked around at the room’s general state of disarray and conspicuous lack of anything resembling a wind instrument – “…your crappy little club?  I’ll have you know I’m a rising concert hall star of the future.  I’ll be bigger than Marasy!  I was…I was on Teppen 2014, darn it!”

“Did you win?”

“Um…”

“Oh.”

Ikuchan looked crestfallen for a moment.  Then she rallied.

“Well, what about you guys?”

The hand finally moved away.

“You know, I’ve heard people say they’ve never heard any of you practicing wind instruments.  In fact, they’ve never even seen you, any of you, holding anything that looks like a wind instrument!  I’ll bet none of you can play so much as a triangle!”

All eyes were on her now.  Somehow, she’d gone from sitting on the stool to standing on top of the piano.

“I guess I’ll be performing in the school festival by myself then!” she finished in a sing-song voice.

They looked at each other.

“This school has festivals?” said Torigoya.

“This is a school?” said Shibuya.

“What did I miss?” said Black, who had materialised on the stool.  Ikuchan fell off the piano.

“Haruna,“ said Yūko.  “Can you show this kid the door?”

“Sure!”

Torigoya pointed at the club room door.

“That’s the door,” she explained agreeably.

There was a long pause.  Yūko sighed.

“Rena, can YOU show this kid the door?”

Ikuchan looked up from where she lay in a crumpled heap on the floor and found herself face to face with the scariest Queen, squatted beside her.  Gekikara giggled.

“Hey…”

“Uh, hey.”

Tick tock.

“Hey, are you…?”

***

The peace of the beautiful sunny day was shattered by the sound of, well, a window shattering.  Ikuchan flew from the top storey of the school and sailed operatically through the air like some strange Valkyrie, her skirt billowing.  She closed her eyes.  A second later, she felt herself landing on something softer than ground.  She opened her eyes.  She was alive.  She had survived an encounter with Rappappa.

“I’m alive!” she exclaimed to no-one in particular.

“Don’t mind me,” said Daruma, sprawled flat on her face beneath her, a chicken wing in each hand.

A moment later, the Steinway D-274 landed beside them with a deafening crash.  They looked up at the hole in the wall on the third floor.  Gekikara looked back down at them.

“You forgot your piano,” she called.

More fun with the girls!  This time on the beach.    :D

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day Trip

“It was…it was Geki-chan’s fault!” wailed Torigoya from somewhere behind Yūko.

“Why don’t you come over here and have a look at what’s going on in MY head, princess?” bristled Gekikara from somewhere by the piano-shaped hole in the wall.

“Oh shut up, the both of you,” said Yūko in a tired voice from somewhere in between them.

“You could have nailed us with that piano!” chorused Shibuya and Black from somewhere behind the couch, where they had dove for cover.

Sado said nothing.  She stared at her kendama, at the end of string that had suddenly been attached to nothing.  She peered down into the schoolyard but couldn’t see the ball.  She wondered if it was under the piano.

“Well, pony up,” said Yūko.

They gathered together, casting forlorn glances at their club room’s new source of ventilation.  There was a jingle of coins.  They stared at their haul.  There was a long moment of reflection.

“We could go shake down some first years,” suggested Shibuya finally.

“Wait…we were actually going to pay up?”

Silence.  Then they all laughed.

“I’m…bored,” said a ghostly voice.

They jumped and spun round to see where it had come from.  A new girl was lying on the couch, looking bored.

“Who the hell are you?!”

“I’m…Salt,” she replied in a bored voice.

They looked at each other and shrugged.  They counted their money again.

“Got any money, Sugar?”

“Salt…” Salt corrected boredly.  She opened one eye and stared at them.  “…..yes.”

“Great!” said Yūko.  “Let’s go to the beach.”

***

They boarded some bus that was headed for some beach.  On the way, they sang Camptown Races almost non-stop (for some reason, that song was stuck in their heads).  Except for Salt, who was sleeping in the back, and Gekikara, who was sat next to her, doodling on her face with a crayon.
When it was time to get off, they stalked off the bus, paying the driver with meaningful glances rather than actual money.  Except Gekikara, who stopped and stared hard at the driver.  He smiled weakly at her.  She grinned back at him before gripping the fare collection box with both hands and, with a screech of tortured metal, tearing it loose.  She dragged it noisily off the bus, leaving a trail of coins behind her.  And she was whistling Camptown Races.

The driver gave his notice later that day.

***

And it was a beautiful sunny day.  Naturally, since it was the same day.  The beach was sandy.  The sea was wet.  There were people, in various states of undress.

“Ladies,” called an overly tanned local baseball hero-in-training as he strutted past them.  When he reached his equally tanned buddies, he gestured back at them and said something.  They guffawed, then formed a serious huddle.

“Well, here we are,” said Yūko.

“I want ice cream,” said Sado.  She cast a glance at the smooth operator and his posse.  “And maybe someone’s b*lls.”

“Ice cream!” shrieked Torigoya happily.

“I…….would like……..an ice cream……….too,” said Salt.

Shibuya stared at her.

“Are you constipated, Sugar?” she enquired.

Salt gave her a look of bored annoyance.

“…………….no.”

“Jellyfish,” said Gekikara.  They watched her as she strode off.

“Well,” said Black.  “I’ll get the ice creams.”

Black vanished with a whoosh.  They felt their ears pop slightly.  A moment later, she reappeared, holding six empty cones.  She stared at them.  They stared at her.  She looked back down the beach at the little ice cream stand.  The vendor was staring at the six scoops of ice cream that sat forlornly on his counter.  She looked back at her companions.

“Maybe I should…take things a little slower,” she said finally.

She vanished again.  They looked at each other.

“海!” they yelled in joyous unison.

It was time to act out Generic Anime 101: The Beach Episode.
They kicked off their shoes and charged towards the glittering blue sea, scattering sunbathers and small children in their wake, while Labrador Retriever played in the background somewhere.  They splashed each other, boobs bouncing in slow motion, hair flowing like a shampoo commercial, laughing gaily.  Someone would say "Whee!" and the others would take up the call.

After about five minutes, they had had enough.

They headed back to dry off.  Salt passed them going in the opposite direction.  She walked very carefully and properly.  When she reached the tide, she carefully and properly removed her shoes.  She dipped one toe into the water.  Another toe.  She stepped fully into the water.

“……..whee?” she said.   Then, after a moment’s consideration, “I’m bored.”

***

Later, they sat together on the sand, watching the lapping waves while eating takoyaki.  Except Gekikara, who hadn’t returned yet.

“Well.”

“That was fun.”

“Yeah!”

They looked as one to Salt.

“…………yeah.”  They waited.  “I……….had a good time……………I think.”

She may have given them a small smile at that point.  Or it could just have been a trick of the light.

“Hey ladies!”

They turned.  The smooth operator was back.

“I was wondering –”

“F**k off,” said Sado.  She’d bought a new kendama and was idly playing with it.

“Hey hey!  Don’t be so cold, babe!  I was just thinking, maybe we could get together and have a real party at –”

“Hey.”

They were looking at someone behind him.  He turned and found himself face to face with Gekikara.

“Hey pretty lady!”

She reached down, grabbed a handful of his trunks and pulled them open.  He grinned at her.  She smiled sweetly back.

“Hey…”

She dropped the jellyfish she had been holding behind her back into his trunks.

“Are you mad?”

It had been a good day.
