Sorry if its a bit short
Silence engulfed in the car as they went back home. A restraining air floats around between Rena and Mr Matsui, making Jurina and Mr Yoko quite uncomfortable. Jurina relished what happened earlier after she and Rena found out about the engagement.
“Rena, where are you going?” Jurina asked as she pursues the girl ahead her, scurrying among the crowds in haste.
“To my dad,” Rena answered, her eyes searching the crowd. And later, just a few meters ahead, talking with 2 other men in posh suits, was her father.
“Excuse me, dad…”
“Oh, Rena, Jurina,” Mr Matsui spoke cheerfully, maybe a little tipsy by the wine he’s holding, “Are you enjoying your time here?”
“We need to talk. Now.”
“…I can’t believe it. How could you?” Jurina overheard Rena’s voice was about to crack. Jurina stood cautiously a few meters away from the two of them, making sure no one would walk to the direction where the two were having an argument.
“What do you mean? I’m doing this for you. Why are you sounding so disappointed? I thought you liked him.” A confuse yet frustrated tone of Mr Matsui could be heard upon her daughter’s disagreement. “You and Takuya have known each other for quite a time now. And his father and Takuya himself is more than happy about this decision.”
An exasperated sigh escaped from Rena, “Just because we’ve known each other for a long time, doesn’t mean I want him to be my fiancée!”
After a few speechless moment, Rena walk away with teary eyes and Jurina worriedly follow suit.
After Jurina washed her face, she went out from the washroom to find Rena staring outside. Her expression reflects from the window showed a blank expression. One that is hard yet easy to comprehend. Jurina approached her from behind.
“Hey,”
Rena shuddered as she felt Jurina’s hand on her shoulder. She wondered how long had she been standing vacantly on the same spot. “Hmm?”
“You okay?”
Jurina knew the moment it slipped from her mouth, she knew, it was one of the most stupidest thing to ask. Rena turned facing her, her eyes portraying an undefined gloom, eyes glistening with tears, she embrace Jurina, who moved a few steps back at the sudden impact.
They were at the same position, while Jurina awkwardly stroke Rena’s hair. She felt Rena’s warm tears soaked in her shoulder as she silently sobbed. Jurina thought it was best for her to not ask anything yet at the moment regarding the frustrating matter. Yes, it was clearly frustrating. The news. Jurina pondered on how could she felt this much of irritation upon the news, and soon realize later that she had actually felt for this girl, Rena.
Jurina was very much aware of the girl’s presence for the past 2 months. She had not noticed anything strange within herself, but lately, something about that Takuya’s presence and the recent news, stirred something inside. Inside her heart to be much clearer. But who is she? Who is she comparing to a wealthy family alike Takuya and Rena. She does not deserve to have these silly feelings. Why? Of all times, why now? She questions herself.
Rena soon released her embrace and apologizes for her sudden action as she stared down in embarrassment.
“It’s late. We should head to sleep,” spoke Rena as she brushed the remaining of her tears using her sleeve.
“Sleep? You’re only saying this after you soaked my shoulders with you waterworks,”Jurina teased, trying to cheer the girl up, only to receive a light punch on her shoulder with a now, smiling, Rena.
The news soon flies fast within the school. Some people who knew that Jurina is currently associating with Rena, bravely approached her to confirmed whether the news about the engagement was true. Only to get a shrug or silence as a reply.
Jurina also saw that one time, that particular one time, where she went to the drink machine, as she had a sudden crave for hot chocolate. She saw Takuya with his clique gloating around, saying that his engagement ceremony would be one of the most magnificent throughout Japan. Show off brat, thought Jurina.
Rena was dealing the sudden confrontation of the news in a quite different way. Avoiding giving clear answers and only managing a small shrug or a smile towards the students asking her.
“I don’t get it.” Airin spoke as she put both hands under her chin, “I thought you weren’t into him. How could both of you be getting engaged soon?”
“I myself don’t get it too, Airin,”answered Rena as she puts her book inside her bag.
“I see…” Airin pondered own her own but soon pointed out at the girl waiting for Rena outside their class, “How does that girl feel? I thought both of you might
have had something…”
Rena slings her bag and looked outside her class to find Jurina leaning against the wall outside of her class. A smile crept upon her face as she stood up.
“Why aren’t you with Annin?”
The first question Jurina was given as she walked at the hall, heading outside of the school compound. “Huh? I don’t get your question…”
“Well, you were always with her last week during the semi-finals. Both of you looked quite inseparable to me,” voiced Rena as she tried to wipe out any trace of jealousy.
“We were helping each other out for the upcoming papers,” answered Jurina truthfully, “and you were being the same way too. Weren’t you and Takuya were so attached last week?”
“What? We weren’t attached!”
“So was I !” stated Jurina, defending herself. Seeing the conversation were heading in a pointless road, both of them gave up and silence retreat them.
Jurina saw Takuya and some of his cliques ahead at the guard’s house, waiting for the car. She also noticed a quite displease look on Rena’s face as she saw the view ahead of them. Jurina did not know how she came upon such an idea, but she boldly suggest, “Wanna take another route back home for a change?”
A bright, mischievous grin from Rena was already enough for an answer and so they went along.
Behind their school, there was a back entrance but it was already locked since the teachers thought it would be much safer for the students to go back home using the front gate since the guard could have a lookout more clearly there.
Jurina who used this route multiple times especially when she was late to school discovered another way to enter the school grounds, which was through a hole-like dry drain, filled with dead leafs. The secret entrance remains unnoticed by the school, but a couple of students, including Jurina knew about it.
“This is totally unreal” Rena expressed as she and Jurina crouched down a little on the drain as they walked outside the hole separating the school and the outside.
Jurina extend her hand and hoist Rena up from the hole and there they were on the back street. “Are you liking this small adventure so far?”
“You bet,”
Rena alleged Mr Yoko soon with a text, saying that she will be back home a little bit late, and do not worry on transport as she already got one. Mr Yoko only replied with an ‘Okay’ added on with a wink.
They planned to go back home by bus, but before that, they went to one of Jurina’s favourite store where she used to buy her chocolate bun every morning when she came to school. Jurina thought Rena would like it, since there was also melonpan being sold over there, knowing how Rena has a huge dorky likings for it. Jurina also have not been visiting the place for almost a month as she has been living with Rena now.
After buying a favourable amount of buns, which melonpan exceeds more than anything, Jurina decided to bring Rena to the Hatsumori Park, which meant The Park Of Beginnings. The park was not far from Jurina’s old flat, and it was just few metres away from her part-time workplace.
They sat on the bench provided from the park and munch on the buns they just bought. The autumn wind blew making them sitting more closer to one another.
“I’m sorry on what you have gone these past few days,” Rena spoke as she wiped her mouth with a spare handkerchief, “Knowing you, it must have been utterly annoying for the students to ask you this and that about me.
“Tch, you bet. I almost felt like choking them at one point,” joked Jurina, but then she changed to a serious tone, “But I know you’re having it worse than I do. Sorry I couldn’t do anything for you.”
“It’s okay. It’s not like the students weren’t expecting this engagement thing to happen,” sighed Rena, but then an amused look came upon her face, “but aren’t you being quite nice to me lately? I almost said ‘Aww you’re so sweet’ when you apologized.”
“Why? Can’t I be sweet to you for an exchange at the moment? Oh, I forgot, you preferred Takuya being sweet to you, isn’t it?” mocked Jurina.
Jurina received another small punch from Rena but what she said later almost made her off guard. “I like the sweet Jurina. Jurina who waits for me after school, Jurina who replied to my answers sarcastically or in an expressionless way, Jurina who acts cold yet kind, Jurina who take me out in this small adventure….”
Seeing how she had express herself way too much, Rena looked down at her shoes, gripping the bench tight, with face as red as a tomato. Whilst Jurina, feeling her heart almost leapt out of her cage, remains quite for a few seconds before saying, “I like Rena too.”
