At the risk of sounding like a broken record.. It all started with anime for me. "Cruel Angel's Thesis" from Evangelion, "Yakusoku Na Iranai" from Escaflowne, "Party Night" from Di Gi Charat.. The original Bubblegum Crisis music, all those fantastic op and ed themes from Card Captor Sakura.. I was a napster fiend, trying to get as much stuff as possible. I grabbed a few Ayumi Hamasaki songs as well, some great remixes of "Evolution", "Boys and Girls", and "Trauma". My wife bought me Ayu's first 2 CD's, but I didn't listen to much else for many years. I began listening to Pizzicato Five later, and Kahimi Karie. My current job has me in the car ALL the time, travelling, and I've really stopped watching anime. I can just never find the time.. It kills me that this is happening, but I've started listening to a ton of jpop in my car to make up for it. I joined an Ayumi Hamasaki forum earlier this year, and discovered Otsuka Ai. I've played her albums to death and have been branching out, looking for other artists that I might enjoy. I found BoA, and W.. From W, I found Mini Moni and then Morning Musume. I came to this forum to learn more about Hello! Project and to hopefully make some friends who will help me discover more new artists. A friend from the Ayu forums helped me discover Mika Nakashima and Yukawa Shione, so hopefully people here will be equally generous. ^_^

SPEED's white love. It not only brought me but the whole of Singapore into the j-pop world. I'm still thanking the TV station's producers (though obsolete now) for deciding to play that 4 min PV.

I started ten years ago together with watching anime. Evangelion had some really great songs and BGM. Shortly after I was hooked on various artists like ELT, Utada Hikaru, Brilliant green... And then in 2000 I was working on one L'arc'en'ciel PV. That was really cool. Ever since then I'm only listening to all kinds of J-music.

There was this secretary at my old company who was really cute.  One day in the pantry I told her that I went to a used book stall over the weekend and found a 30 year old manual on how to survive a nuclear war.  She said to me, "Wouldn't it be better to die after a nuclear war?  That's the impression I got from watching Barefoot Gen."  It turns out that we both liked anime, but she hadn't watched Ghost in the Shell.  So I loaned it to her, and she loaned me L'arc en Ciel's ark.  We both loved each other's recommendations.  Later, she introduced me to Shiina Ringo, which I loved, and Dir en Grey, which I was so-so with.  The relationship never really worked out, but her music recommendations were really influential to me.

Okay, let's get one thing out of the way up front: I'M OLD. Like really fucking old. That said, I first got into Japanese music in the '80s. Along with a lot of hardcore punk bands from Japan (GISM, The Stalin, Garlic Boys...), I listened to quite a bit of this lady:

[yt]CkXIOdOwGTE[/yt]

[yt]RuYmvPYW_k8[/yt]

^ That's Jun Togawa, by the way. ^

Japanese stuff has always been scattered in among the rest of the eclectic crap I annoy and confuse my friends and family with (bombastic, over-produced Swedish pop; anything with yodelling, accordions or whistling; Toy Dolls...). It was the birth of Morning Musume, though, that cranked my love of Japanese pop music up to the level of obsession. Here's an accurate portrait of my face the first time I saw a MoMusu video:

It was love at first site and I've been devouring everything the H!P stable cranks out ever since. Can't tell you all how nice it was to discover JPH!P. I'm glad to be part of the tribe.

I was kind of into anime a few years ago. I liked some of the themes dongs and found out that some were done by actual artists, but it wasn't until I heard Koda Kumi in FFX-2 that I actually started searching for other J-artists. I had a hard time finding stuff, but some new friends hooked me up with a bunch of songs and links to trackers. Then I just started downloading random stuff.

I got onto this bandwagon through SPEED, the all time greatest girl band imo. Their music was so new and their voice was so fresh that it caught me instantly.

I got into J-music in first place when I began to watch tokusatsu (there was really beautiful and adrenal music), then I asked my friend (who listen J-Pop & J-Rock), that I want to listen Ayumi Hamasaki (cause when I arrive to this forum I saw her thread and a lot of posts, that glorify her, in it). He gave me some of her songs along with the "Single Collection" of Utada Hikaru (which I loved more than Ayumi's songs - I beg your pardon, all of Ayumi Hamasaki fans).

i've known about j-pop from watching all kinds of animes when i was younger...
but i really got into it a few years back, after a co-worker convinced me to listen to L'arc~En~Ciel's Smile CD...  got hooked and from there, got obsessed into discovering more japanese music by way of torrent sites like jpopsuki and so i moved on to other bands like Spitz, Mr. Children, Toe, Sambomaster... currently loving: PolyABC, Melting Holidays, A Band Apart, Advantage Lucy and Paris Match
