It's crazy, but it was real cool as tama-chan and metoice brought it live with a perspective through the  JPH!P Chatroom. Though we joked it was tama-chan in her tank,  wonder if things go back to normal.

It seems peaceful atm, just gotta pray there's not gonna be rival factions fighting. lol @ people taking photos in the street.

I led a protest against the coup at the Thai Consul in New York City a few hours ago.  Just 2 hours notice, but had a dozen people joining, as well as lots of people who we met on the the street and decided to join as well.

We carried signs saying "Give Thai Democracy a Chance", "Defend the People's Constitution of Thailand", "Elections Were Just a Month Away! - Only Dictators Fear Elections", and of course, "Defend the King and Constitution"

I was interviewed by local TV stations like NY1 as well as TV Asahi.

A friend of mine told me that Thaksin has checked out of the Times Square Hyatt and is on a plane bound for Thailand right now.

Let's hope that he's not shot when he lands. I'm mostly familiar with studying Latin American coups. Hopefully this one gets settled peacefully.

Nope.  The election was set for October 15, a new royally-mandated Election Commission was established going to run it, political parties were actively out campaigning for the elections.  No charges of election fraud had been made yet.  The Constitution wasn't perfect, but was probably the most democratic constitution since 1948.  There's a reason it was called the People's Constitution.  The democratic process was moving forward, and all major parties, including the government party, promised to start a process of amending the Constitution after the elections.

But less than a month before the election date, the military abrogates the Constitution and the elections are canceled.  I don't agree with a lot of things the Premier has done, but I do believe in the right of the people to vote.

Allegations that the Premier disrespected the King and had a stranglehold of state agencies like the military and the judiciary are patently false - otherwise, how could the military overthrow him and appoint a senior judge as the new Premier?

Charges against him need to be settled in court, and people who don't like him need to vote against him - a coup is not the answer.

Aren't military coups like a dime a dozen in Thailand?  The locals probably should have gotten used to it by now.

There were plenty from 1946 to 1976.  But after that, there was just one in 1977 and then one again in 1992.

That 1992 one was welcomed by Bangkokians, just as they're welcoming this one.  Then, the military claimed the government was corrupt, was disrespected to the King, and tried to order the military around (pretty much the same allegations the current coup has).  But the military wouldn't let go of power, even after elections, and lots of people died in the protests that followed.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Thailand_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat for the latest updates situation.  Me and a bunch of Wikipedia editors are taking a very hard line against bias and unverified information.

I heard Thaksin and his family is now in England. Don't know when he'll come back here. Or idf he'll eer come back here.

I avoid politiks like plague. But I don't believe an election can solve everything.
