Congrats to DBSK!  Its gonna be fun viewing them in the 09 edition of Guiness.

but they also got the record for group with the most number of fans? I love them, so of course I would want them to have as many fans as possible, but I kinda find that record hard to believe, with all these other music acts in the world.  :-\

I know it's hard, but it's about the people registered in their FC, Michael Jackson or Elvis didn't had a FC when they were around, am I wrong? They had fans who followed them and if they did had a FC, it was hard to count everyone in the FC since sometimes it could be registered only by mail (probably), well, that's my uncle's theory when I told him about their 1st record. Elvis held the record before, and he did have a FC, but hmmm...how do i say it? Not every single Elvis fan joins the FC. It was in the end of 2008 when DBSK got the title, Korea is inmense, so is Japan, China, etc, almost eveyone in Asia knows them, likes them, is in their FC (rofl j/k but kind of >_< haha). They have an official FC somewhere in Asia (besides Cassiopeia & Bigeast) too, so that's a plus. There's plenty of people who have joined Cassiopeia, even if they live in the other side of the world, pretty insane stuff. At first it's hard to believe, but then, when you analize how times have changed, you'll probably understand why, though I'm 100% sure that if Elvis was still around or something and his FC was somewhat alive, he would still hold the record.

OMGASS, such a long post, hopefully someone understood what I said >______< My english fails hahaha.

Heres more details of TVXQ's slave contract. Unbelievable!!!

Quote
With the court agreeing on the injunction sent by the 3 members of TVXQ, the trio had the power to look at SM Entertainment's contract for the members. It was shockingly unfair and against public policy. The three members who stood up for themselves (Kim Junsu, Kim Jaejoong, and Park Yoochun) have the court on their side and are now proceeding with their main lawsuit, which is to get the shares and income that they deserve from their activities in the past 6 years.

Below is what the court has presented as the content of the members' contracts. The contract has been modified 5 times since their debut, so this is the overall review.

1. TVXQ has received $0 from their album sales till July 2008, and a very small amount after.

Before the fifth modification that the company made with their contract, it stated that the profit from albums and singles with sales less than 500,000 copies would go 100% to SM Entertainment, which left the members with nothing. There has been no Korean album that have exceeded 500,000 album sales between the time of TVXQ's debut and their 4th album Mirotic, which was the first album in Korea to sell over 500,000 albums for a long time.

On July 1 2008, the company changed the contract so each member would get 1% from album sales that exceeded 200,000 copies. For albums that are below that number, they are paid 0.6% to nothing. Through these terms, TVXQ has not earned a single cent since February 2009.

2. TVXQ has received $0 from sales of concert DVD's and albums with recordings from concerts.

The contract stated that the members are not entitled to get any profit from concert DVD's and "live" albums.

3. TVXQ received $0 from their appearances in TV programs.

In the contract, the members do not have a right to receive the shares made from appearances on television programs if they are featured in only one episode or if their appearance is temporary. SM has kept all the profit from TV shows where TVXQ were guests.

4. For other ways of getting profit, SM subtracts the total amount with all the expenses that the company has paid for them, including clothing, salary of company staff, stage preparation, rent, food expenses, and etc., which only leaves a fraction for the members of TVXQ.

As for all other sources of income, the contract says that the members do not get the full "net income", but only get a percentage of it. The contract states that the "net income" is the profit remaining after deducting their operating costs, which is the money that the company spends on them. The operating costs include expenses that are to be covered by the employer, such as salaries of the staff (manager, clothing coordinators, makeup artists, dance coordinators, back dancers, etc.), performance stages, living expenses which include water and electricity bills, travel expenses which include plane tickets, and meal expenses. The company might add something in addition to deduct more from the net income.

In conclusion, TVXQ actually received anywhere from 1% to 5% from all of their activities, which depending on how you look at it can still add up to 7 figures or more but still many consider this to be unfair.

^ Which leads me to wonder yet again about the contracts of SNSD and Super Junior.  If DBSK, one of SM's cash cow, has that kind of structure in their contract, how are these massive groups getting paid?

I don't think many artists in Korean or Japanese music get percentage cuts from albums, concerts, dvds ect. just the way it works in the industry. It's actually pretty good that DBSK gets something, even if it's a minuscule amount. Only things artists usually get percentage cuts of are photo-books, drama's, radio DJing gigs and maybe something else I'm forgetting atm. Even in the west artists don't make anything significant directly from albums, they all make their fortunes from tours since they get 100% control.

In Asia the way it works is they are paid by salary and receive a monthly paycheck (or was is weekly, can't remember). The salary is negotiated every year and is essentially based on how much work they did the previous year. So when albums sell and tours go well that stuff would all be reflected in their salary the next year. I know that's how Up-Front/Hello Project and Avex do it so I'm pretty sure it's similar with other companies. It would be interesting to get some actual income numbers, they used to come out with estimations based on taxes from time to time in Japan.

For SM I know the managers always pay for EVERYTHING when they go out and a lot of their clothes are free from sponsorships and what not (I didn't know they had to pay back that stuff though O_o). They also use company credit cards whenever they do buy something. I've heard Yoona and some of the other SNSD girls mention the money goes to their parents and they put it aside for them.

But it is true that Idols and entertainers in Asia don't make nearly as much as you might think.

Yeah, all of this stuff is very interesting. Yeah, DBSK only gets paid tiny amounts, but consider also this:
http://community.livejournal.com/omonatheydidnt/104850.html
Quote
In the morning of March 13th, South Korean media reported that the past two-year deficits for Korea's SM Entertainment company reached around to 1.62 billion won for the year 2008.

According to reports, SM's profits from TVXQ, Super Junior and Girls' Generation net grossed 43.4 billion won. Despite this, there is still a deficit of 1.6 billion for the year.

However, profits for SM in 2008 has grown 30% compared to 2007, but because of BoA's entry into the American market, and because most of SM artists are groups, each event required much more travel/transportation fees and personal management fees than usual. Therefore, despite there was a higher revenue in 2008, SM still reported a deficit year-end.
And you know the budgets belt is starting to be tightened when most of SM's recent MVs have been about on the same level as Shouganai's PV. It was like a slap in the face when I realized that SM uses "the H!P formula" as well, with "dance shot, closeups, random scenes that could be story", just with higher-budget sets and costumes. But it looks like the gap from UFA is closing, and when you look at the MVs for, say, BEG, that is really not a good thing.

The entire controversy is even more interesting for me personally because I was raised on old movies, especially those from the era where large studios like MGM were giant production companies very similar to these idol factories today. The company told you what to do, and then you did it. And a lot of child labor laws are now in place because of cases like Judy Garland, who I consider The Greatest Idol Ever. She and Mickey Rooney released three movies a year constantly, most all of them musicals, which would be like putting on three concerts a year with each having completely new songs and choreography, but having to act convincingly for the rest as well. They talked about taking wake-up pills to get going, then taking sleeping pills at the first opportunity to re-energize. Judy suffered from an addiction to these pills, leading to use of morphine as well. She had just come back from drug rehab to do [noembed][/noembed], and the entire time they were on her back to lose the few extra pounds she had had, which according to her daughters just crushed her self-esteem.(Does she look fat in that video to you!?) Judy was ultimately dismissed from MGM because she had missed several movies due to nervous breakdowns, migraines, and suicide attempts. She was 30, and had started with MGM at age 12.
Hopefully idols today don't have the same drug addiction problems, but it's clear that they deal with a lot of the same issues from the higher-ups. Remember the apparent SM depression club in the Leeteuk's blog?

Another note: girl idols seem to rebel by getting into relationships and doing things to themselves, like with Kago, while boys prefer to strike back, like with Lou Perlman's acts (Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, etc.) suing him on similar grounds as the DBSK suit.

But yeah, more news:
http://www.allkpop.com/index.php/full_story/tvxq_not_allowed_to_continue_group_activities/
Quote
Lawyers of SM Entertainment said:
"The court's ruling for TVXQ is not fair. They didn't consider the main reasons of the case. Their long contract is so that we can let them grow and have a long term deal with them. We want to look at their career in the long run and the court's decision is not letting us do that. This is going to affect TVXQ's international promotions. It'll also create confusion for stars that want to have long term contracts and move on to bigger things later in their careers and for the companies that want to nurture talented people for a longer time. Not only that, it'll have some unwanted consequences on exports of Korean music as well as other issues."
[...]
"Each year, we adjusted the contracts in favor of the members. Before this problem, the three members never complained about anything. Now that they have succeeded this much, they are complaining. They have just started to reach the top and now want to separate. Before a final decision is made, the three can do their personal and individual work. However, this does not grant the three members any rights as part of TVXQ."

Because of all this, TVXQ has not been able to work and SM Entertainment will seek to receive compensation for damages during the time that TVXQ has been inactive.

Wow, the lawyers are hiding the big guns. The first half of the response was kind of BS. The second half is more of how defenders of SM have argued, but still very candied-over. I guess they fear the wrath of the fangirls.

saw this and google translate read it:

TVXQ to be releasing as 3 member unit called "JYJ"

Photo: (from left), Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu

something about working with Kanye and Darkchild?!?!? new album  'The Beginning'

source: http://thestar.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2010/09/29/2010092901154.html

apparently this is old news lol

ETA:

3 TVXQ members to make comeback as JYJ next month

Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun and Xiah Junsu, whose singing careers as members of group TVXQ have been on a halt since being involved in a legal dispute with agency SM Entertainment, will make a comeback to the music scene next month as a trio named JYJ.

The group's publicist Prain Inc. announced through a press release Wednesday that JYJ, representing the first letter of each singer's name, will release their worldwide studio album titled "The Beginning" on October 12.

Recorded in English, a total of 10 tracks including seven new songs and three remixes will be featured on the album.

"Ayyy Girl," the first track on the upcoming release, was produced by 14-time Grammy Award-winning rapper Kanye West and features Malik 'The Poet' Yusef, called the maestro of spoken word.

And Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins, who has worked with top global artists such as the late King of Pop Michael Jackson and Britney Spears, composed "Empty" and "Be My Girl" for the new album.

"I am extremely happy to be taking part in JYJ's world debut...... It was a very special and precious project," Jerkins was quoted as saying.

The three idol singers contributed to the record as well with self-written songs; Hero with "Still in Love," Micky with "I Love You" and Xiah with "I Can Soar."

Warner Music Worldwide will be in charge of the album's simultaneous release worldwide on October 12, the same day a special limited edition of the record will go on sale for 99,999 cents. Further details on the album can be found at www.jyj-thebeginning.com

Hero, Micky and Xiah debuted in 2004 as part of five-member boy band TVXQ but despite seeing phenomenal success in the Asia region, they ceased to remain a single group when in July of last year, they filed a lawsuit against SM questioning the validity of their 13-year contract.

After the court sided with the boys, they maintained their presence in Japan by signing with major entertainment group Avex earlier this year but Avex abruptly suspended its relation with the three just last week, citing concerns over the boys' Korean management agency C-JeS Entertainment Co.

Avex stated it cannot promote JYJ's activities in Japan since reports were saying that the head of C-JeS holds a criminal record and that he is also related to a criminal organization, although Avex remains the legal representative for TVXQ in Japan.

The trio refuted Avex's statement, arguing that Avex had been aware of the criminal record but that he was unrelated to a criminal organization. They rather claimed that Avex brought the reason to issue when JYJ failed to agree to new terms of a contract Avex drew up.

"We cannot rid ourselves of the thought that Avex regarded us as a tool for their company's profits rather than treating us as artists. We are just frustrated that we cannot say when we will be able to meet with our Japanese fans now. We ask for your active support and interest for the resolution of this," the three said in the statement.

I like them, but I was embarrassed watching this. I couldn't even watch the whole video the first time around. o wow, lol. This song is kinda catchy, but just not my cup of tea. I like Kanye as well, but I feel like his rap was just to fill in a void. I need DBSK.

And Micky looked like Michael Jackson circa 1992... The Dangerous album.
