So all during this past week, the school I'm working at today has been having it's own version of "Pros VS Joes" during the lunch hour where they've gotten teachers and local athletes to go against students in both trivia and physical challenges. Today's "Pro" was none other than former Blue Bomber Troy Westwood. Wasn't there myself as I didn't know until after it had finished and he'd gone (hence, no pics), but from what some kids have told me they ripped into him pretty hard.

Troy Westwood? Montel Williams' brother in law? He can show you how to miss 3/4 field goals in a championship game.  And write a column for the least-seriously-taken newspaper in the city, sell used cars, and play bass guitar in a band with some of his buddies.  What else is he good for?

Simpson seeking trade from Bombers
Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
By: Gary Lawless
11/09/2009 10:36 AM

WINNIPEG — Barrin Simpson is almost certainly finished with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The veteran linebacker has asked the Blue Bombers for a trade and the club has been shopping him around the league in an attempt to recoup something for the 31-year-old disgruntled defender.

Simpson, who has not taken part in practice with the Bombers this week, was on the field this morning in his Bombers' practice gear but didn't take part in any drills.

Then Blue Bombers Director of Football Operations Ross Hodgkinson approached Simpson on the practice field with a piece of paper, and asked Simpson to sign it. The player and the executive then left the field.

Simpson has been slowed by a turf toe all season and head coach Mike Kelly and defensive co-ordinator Mark Nelson have approached him about a limited role in the next little while and the veteran wants no part of that. Simpson has not answered his cell phone since late last night and the team has said they'll make him available following practice this morning.

Simpson, however, has spoken to the Globe and Mail's David Naylor on the issue and his comments leave little room for a resolution between the club and the player:

"I was told this week they wanted to try a different combination group, they said 'we feel this would be a better fit for us right now,'" said Simpson. "Of course I was upset about that so I said 'give me an explanation. Have I been playing bad?' They said 'you've been playing great but we just want to try a different combination in the linebacking corps.

"I'm not with that. That tells me we're rebuilding and it's no longer about winning games this season. So I said 'coach if that's what you want to do, then I respectfully disagree. You can't ask me to be a backup and have me agree with that. You say I'm playing good football and anyone who watches film knows that.'

"My thing is I want to win now and to me this was him saying 'we want to see what the future holds.' I said 'coach, I respectfully disagree and I will ask you to trade me.' There was no yelling, we talk like men.

"I've been playing great football so to ask me to take less reps or sit down so you can see another combination is not acceptable to me. It comes off as 'we want to see what's going to work in the future.'"

The Bombers, who to this point have refused to comment on the issue, have a young and talented linebacker in 26-year-old Joe Lobendahn as well as 28-year-old Siddeeq Shabazz rounding into form after early-season ankle injuries.

Yeah, Bombers are gonna finish in the basement this year, I'd be impressed if they do better than Hamilton.  The little green goblins have been out in full force all weekend and they're gonna eat up the Blue crew alive again.

Correct. Officially, the Canadian border authourity wouldn't allow him across the border due to his criminal record.

Unofficially there are, of course, rumours stating that there are other reasons why the Bombers decided to stop trying to sign him.

Yeah, we don't need any dead hookers showing up or anything. We've got enough of that shit going on as it is.

Bombers sign Troy Westwood

- Likely to handle punting duties

By: Ed Tait
19/10/2009 1:20 PM

He's 42 and hasn't kicked in a real game in about 16 months. But the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are hoping Troy Westwood still has some life left in his left leg.

Bomber head coach Mike Kelly announced Monday the team has added the 16-year veteran to their practice roster and he could punt for the team as early as this Saturday when the Montreal Alouettes pay a visit.

Westwood will be on the practice field Tuesday afternoon and if he can prove he can handle the punting, he'll take that load from Alexis Serna. Mike Renaud, the team's regular punter, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Thanskgiving. And while Serna filled in capably in the interim, he also missed two field goals in Sunday's 24-21 loss to the B.C. Lions and Kelly wants him to concentrate solely on the placekicking.

Enter Westwood, the team's all-time leading scorer.

"At my age when that much time passes when you've been cut or released it's very unusual to get an opportunity. So, I'm very aware of how precious this opportunity is and I plan on making the most of it," said Westwood.

"Someone asked me (Sunday) early in the day if there was any chance of me maybe coming back to punt and I said, 'There's absolutely no hope whatsoever of that.' So I just about fell over when I checked my phone at the movie theatre. I was very surprised and I've been more or less just trying to contain or control my emotions since that point. I've felt like vomiting for the vast majority of the day so far."

Westwood said he has been kicking fairly regularly and played soccer all summer. But he hasn't kicked in game conditions since the preseason of 2008 before he was released by then-head coach Doug Berry.

"This is not a condemnation at all on what Alexis Serna did yesterday," said Kelly. "But this gives us an opportunity to bring Troy in on the practice roster and see what he can do. If, in fact, we feel he can help us then we will activate him and it allows Alexis to just do what he's doing better than just about anybody in the league this year and that's kick extra points and field goals. Troy's kept himself in great shape and I just think it could be beneficial in a lot of different ways.

"We're fortunate that we have someone like Westwood who unceremoniously was disbarred from this organization last year. That isn't how we want to treat Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Troy is a hall-of-fame type player here in my humble eyes. For him to be more or less be discarded the way he was... I don't want players who are long-time Bombers to think that's the kind of fate they face in some point. He should have left this club with a little more dignity than what he left it with last year.

"We'll give him an opportunity. If it works out, great. And if it doesn't then he'll know he's always going to be a Blue Bomber in our eyes."
