「よっすぃー」の愛称で親しまれる吉沢に悲劇が襲った。悲報を受けた１１日からすべての仕事をキャンセルして、弘太さんの遺体に付き添った。ス タッフが事情を聴くため連絡しても、親族が対応するだけで、吉沢は会話ができないほど泣き崩れ、落ち込んでいるという。両親も同様で、葬儀などは身内だけ で営まれるもようだ。
１４日には大阪厚生年金会館で、美勇伝などと共演するコンサートが予定されている。年始に発表した５月でモー娘卒業を、大阪のファンに自分の言葉で報告する予定だった。深い悲しみを知るスタッフは、出演について本人と相談することも控えているという。
警視庁などによると、事故が発生したのは１０日午後１０時５０分ごろ。東京・新宿区の神楽坂下交差点に自転車で進入した弘太さんが、右方向から 直進してきた乗用車と衝突。道路に投げ出され、頭部を強打するなどして、救急車が到着した時には外傷性の心肺停止状態だった。すぐ最寄りの病院に搬送され たが、１１日午前０時１５分に病院で死亡した。乗用車を運転していた専門学校生の男（２０）も首などに軽傷を負った。男は道路交通法と業務上過失致傷の疑 いで同日午前に逮捕。１２日午前に送検された。
吉沢は物心が付いてから誕生した５歳下の弘太さんの面倒をよく見てきた。自分のラジオ番組などでも、８歳下の弟とともに、たびたびエピソードを 紹介。寝ている間に、髪の毛を切られたり、机の上を荒らされたりと、いたずら盛りの当時を振り返りながら「怒るときは怒るけど、やっぱり弟はかわいい」と 語っていた。関係者によると「よっすぃーの弟」として同級生など周囲から特別視される環境を申し訳なく思いながら、弟たちをかわいがっていた。
