I fell off the wagon for a little bit there, but now I'm back to reading real books on a regular basis.

I finished this yesterday:

And now I'm on this one:

Special Topics in Calamity Physics.
It's a novel and has nothing to do with physics, but it is especially awesome so far.

It's a little too soon for me to say for sure, but from what I've read it's more or less what I expected. Which is good. The thesis resembles that of Rick Perlstein's Before the Storm: radical movements may seem to crash and burn at the polls, but in fact they often succeed at changing the political conversation in very real ways. Before the Storm is definitely the sexier read of the two, but this is cool enough.

So American Dreamers was fine, but not really anything to write home about.

This, on the other hand, is excellent so far, and I totally recommend it if you're in to this sort of thing. Civil war history without any military nitty-gritty -- though that isn't to say that it's some kind of broad historical outline that avoids nitty-gritty details altogether. It's more like a portrait of the political, intellectual and cultural activity around the outbreak of the war. Definitely one of the better books I've read lately.

Current trying to start A Game of Thrones. I usually go toward witty humor (or dark humor) or scifi/fantasyish books.

The former I recommend Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel and Naked by David Sedaris. Naked by Sedaris is another amusing read.
For the latter, I definitely recommend Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss. Problem is that the trilogy is unfinished. The second book rather recently came out after years apart from the first published.
