Wallace spared automatic ban for now

Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Detroit Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace won't be suspended after all for the team's game against the Orlando Magic on Friday night.

It appeared that Wallace would face a one-game suspension because he picked up two technical fouls in Wednesday night's 90-87 loss to the New Orleans Hornets. NBA rules dictate that a player must be sidelined for a game when he reaches 16 technical fouls.

However, technicals Wallace received Dec. 23 and Feb. 7 were rescinded, NBA vice president of basketball communications Tim Frank said in an e-mail Thursday to The Associated Press. That leaves Wallace with 14 this season.

Cavs' Wallace out 4-6 weeks

Associated Press

HOUSTON -- Cleveland Cavaliers forward Ben Wallace will miss four to six weeks after breaking his right leg in Thursday's 93-74 loss to Houston.

Wallace said Yao Ming kicked him as the two were running down the court in the second quarter. The 6-foot-9 Wallace managed to play midway into the third quarter before leaving for good with 6:19 left.

"I thought it was like a calf bruise or something, that would probably let up eventually," Wallace said. "But it didn't. It was one of those freak accidents that happen in basketball."

Wallace saw the X-rays taken at the Toyota Center that showed the broken fibula.

"I know what that little white line means," he said.

Wallace, who guarded Yao for most of his 17 minutes, was playing his fourth game since missing Cleveland's Feb. 18 win over Toronto with a right arm laceration that required 14 stitches.

Wallace was averaging 6.6 rebounds and 3.0 points in 53 games this season. His loss could be devastating and continues a run of bad injury luck for Cavs, who have played without Zydrunas Ilgauskas (left ankle) and Delonte West (broken wrist) for extended periods.

"It's a tough blow for us," said Cleveland coach Mike Brown.

Wallace has been Cleveland's best interior defender and has played well in his second season with Cleveland, which acquired him in a trade from Chicago last February.

The Cavaliers passed up chances to acquire a big man before the trade deadline. Now, they'll have to rely on Ilgauskas, Anderson Varejao and maybe even 6-9 rookie J.J. Hickson to handle opposing centers inside.

"We just have to have somebody step up and play some quality minutes for us," Brown said.

Wallace had a protective boot and crutches next to his locker after the game. He was hoping to play again before the postseason.

"I haven't had a broken arm, broken leg, anything major like that since I've been playing basketball," said Wallace, in his 12th season. "For it to happen now, it's just tough. I'm 34 years old. I don't need no broken bones."

Ex-King Williams denied reinstatement

By Marc Stein
ESPN.com

Veteran guard Jason Williams' request to be immediately reinstated to the NBA after his voluntary retirement before the season has been denied, ESPN.com has learned.

League bylaws state that Williams needed unanimous approval from the league's 30 teams to gain reinstatement within one year of his decision to walk away from a one-year contract he signed in August with the Los Angeles Clippers. The NBA enforces a one year mandatory waiting period for players wishing to return from the voluntary retired list without such approval.

But six teams voted against letting Williams return this season, according to results obtained Friday by ESPN.com. The six teams that voted no were Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Minnesota, San Antonio and the Clippers, who would have gained exclusive rights to the 33-year-old had he been reinstated.

After signing the one-year deal with L.A., Williams abruptly retired before the start of training camp. He has yet to publicly discuss his reasons for ultimately declining to join the Clippers.

It's believed that Williams would have drawn a fair amount of free-agent interest had he been reinstated and then let go by the Clippers.

In 679 regular-season games, Williams averaged 11.4 points, 6.3 assists and 2.4 rebounds while playing for Sacramento, Memphis and Miami. He has appeared in 53 playoff games, averaging 9.8 points, 3.7 assists and 2.2 rebounds and helped the Heat win a championship in 2006.

He was drafted by Sacramento in 1998 following his junior year at the University of Florida and was named to the 1999 NBA All-Rookie Team after averaging 12.8 points and 6.0 assists, quickly becoming one of the most popular players in the Kings' Sacramento history in partnership with Chris Webber.

Williams moved to Memphis before the 2001-02 season and over the next four seasons became the Grizzlies' career leader in assists and 3-point attempts. He joined the Heat via trade before the 2005-06 season.

Heat will retire Mourning's jersey

Associated Press

MIAMI -- Alonzo Mourning's jersey will soon hang over the Miami Heat's home floor.

The Heat will retire Mourning's No. 33 in a halftime ceremony March 30, when Miami hosts the Orlando Magic. His will be the first Heat jersey to be retired by the team, which has previously put the numbers of Michael Jordan and Dan Marino on the arena wall.

But it's long been Miami's plan to make Mourning the first Heat player to receive the honor.

"It's fitting that he has the first jersey retired in the Heat arena," guard Dwyane Wade said before Miami hosted the New York Knicks on Saturday night. "You think Alonzo, you think of Miami. To see his jersey in the rafters will mean a lot to every player who comes through here. He's kind of what this organization stands for."

Mourning was part of Miami's NBA championship in 2006, a seven-time All-Star and two-time NBA defensive player of the year. He finished with career averages of 17.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots, and still has a space assigned to him in the Heat locker room -- although now it's primarily used by his son Trey, a Miami ballboy.

"It's a great privilege and it will be an incredible honor for the Miami Heat on the night of March 30," said Heat president Pat Riley, who coached Mourning in Miami and developed a special bond with the center. "That's the night the number 33 will become truly significant with this franchise and the name that goes with it, Alonzo Mourning, will be hung from the rafters forever."

Mourning suffered what essentially amounted to a career-ending injury on Dec. 19, 2007 -- the fourth anniversary of his lifesaving kidney transplant.

He tried to return this season for one final campaign, but retired for good on Jan. 22.

South Florida will remain Mourning's home base, and his passion -- Alonzo Mourning Charities -- will continue raising money for disadvantaged children in the area. So far, his annual Zo's Summer Groove series of fundraisers -- which he now co-headlines alongside Wade -- have alone raised more than $7 million.

"When you think of the Miami Heat ... I would say the majority of the people think of Alonzo Mourning, first and foremost," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "What he's been able to accomplish outside the court and what he's been able to give to people of need as inspiration, I think it's even a bigger story than what he's done on the court."

Riley said more jerseys will be added to the rafters in the future, to hang alongside Mourning.

"His will be the first," Riley said. "It won't be the last."

Celtics to be careful with Scalabrine

Associated Press

BOSTON -- Boston Celtics forward Brian Scalabrine is scheduled for more tests to determine the effects of concussions that have bothered him for the last month.

"I've had some very challenging days," he said on Sunday before Boston's game against the Detroit Pistons, the 12th in the last 15 he has missed. "Am I concerned about it? Well, yeah. It's my career, my life."

Scalabrine said he has had five concussions in his life -- three of them this year. He had two in a week in January and sat out nine games; he returned and played three games before an injury against Denver on Monday that was first described as a strained neck but was likely another concussion.

"We're just going to be very careful with him," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I'm pretty scared. I don't know anything about it, but I know enough to be scared. We really don't know enough about it in any league."

Oden to miss 7-10 more days

ESPN.com news services

Greg Oden will miss another 7 to 10 days as he continues to recover from a left knee injury, the Portland Trail Blazers announced Monday, according to The Oregonian of Portland.

Oden, who has missed the team's last seven games after chipping his kneecap on Feb. 12, is due to miss another four to six games under the latest timetable for his return, according to the report. He missed six games early this season with a foot injury.

Oden, who missed his entire rookie season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee, traveled with the team on its three-game trip road last week but did not play. Coach Nate McMillan said Oden "didn't look good," when he tried running during a practice in Minnesota, according to The Oregonian.

"As far as what I saw of him running the floor, I don't think he'll be coming back any time in the next few days," McMillan said Sunday, according to the report.

Man, Oden's been having the worst luck in his NBA career, and it still has barely started.

Cuban critical of Mavs' effort

Associated Press

DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks are testing the patience of Mark Cuban.

The outspoken owner called out his entire roster Tuesday, a day after the Mavericks fell behind by 23 and lost to Oklahoma City, which is among the worst teams in the NBA and played without its top two scorers.

"It's only one game, which I keep reminding myself of," Cuban said in Wednesday's editions of The Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "But let's just say I wasn't happy with our preparation, execution or effort. Not only did it look like we had no idea what we were doing, but we did it without effort. The effort and energy, on both sides of the ball, by each player will decide their future with the Mavericks."

Cuban has never been afraid to shake up the roster, but the Mavericks did nothing before this year's trade deadline. They are standing by the belief that trading promising young point guard Devin Harris to New Jersey for Jason Kidd would give them the veteran leadership they need to win a championship.

Dallas entered Wednesday night's game against San Antonio at 6-13 against the other playoff contenders in the Western Conference. They had won three straight before the loss to Oklahoma City, but their previous defeat was a lackluster showing in San Antonio when the Spurs were without Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.

"If each player can't take the personal initiative to make every game important and play like it, I don't see them being here next season," Cuban said. "The ball won't always bounce the way we want it to, but every player can control their level of effort. I don't care what their contract is. I would rather turn over the roster 100 percent than subject fans to another game like last night."

Although the Mavericks are clinging to the final playoff spot in the West, they have a mathematical shot at climbing as high as No. 2. A more realistic goal is getting to the fourth seed and having the home-court advantage in the first round.

"This team has the talent to win in the playoffs," Cuban said. "But that's only going to happen if all 15 guys know and execute their assignments and play every possession like it's important."

To see the Mavs continue to fall, makes for a happy day. :D

Iverson will do 'whatever it takes'

Associated Press

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Allen Iverson says he will come off the bench if that's what's best for the Detroit Pistons.

Iverson attended the team's practice on Thursday after visiting doctors at Georgetown University in Washington. He said in a statement that he's disappointed the soreness in his back will force him to miss two weeks, but doctors told him treatment and rest are best.

Iverson said his goal hasn't changed since arriving: to help the Pistons win a championship. He says he'll do "whatever it takes" -- "regardless if I'm starting or coming off the bench."

Iverson has missed three straight games. Detroit is six games under .500 with Iverson starting, which coach Michael Curry says Iverson won't do when his back is healthy enough for him to play.

Amare won't be back this season

ESPN.com news services

The Phoenix Suns had hoped that if Amare Stoudemire recovered quickly enough from surgery to repair a torn retina, he could return to the team for the playoffs, if it qualified.

That hope was dashed Thursday, when the doctor who performed Stoudemire's surgery ruled out any return at all this season -- playoffs included.

"It's very difficult to explain to anyone how serious this is," Dr. Pravin Dugel said, according to The Arizona Republic. "It's more serious than any knee or ankle surgery. The healing is excruciatingly slow and delicate."

It had originally been hoped that Stoudemire could recover enough to resume activity in eight weeks. But Dugel said the recovery could take months, according to the report. And Stoudemire is not even allowed to attend Suns home games, due to the danger any jarring could pose.

Stoudemire suffered the injury to his right eye on Feb. 18 in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers. He suffered multiple tears and had a "very large" and "traumatic" retina detachment with blood in his right eye at the time of surgery, Dugel said.

"Now it's a matter of just waiting for his body to resorb the fluid," Dugel said, according to the report. "So far, it's resorbing slowly."

Surgery could accelerate that process, but the procedure could also cause a cataract, according to the report.

Stoudemire suffered a partially torn iris in the same eye early in training camp in October after being inadvertently poked by then-teammate Boris Diaw.

Stoudemire suffered no damage to the retina or cornea that time, but said he would likely wear protective goggles for the rest of his career to keep his eyes safe. But he ditched the goggles after seven games because he wasn't comfortable wearing them.

Barkley's DUI sentence reduced

Associated Press

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Former NBA great Charles Barkley will serve only three days in jail for DUI after a judge reduced his original 10-day sentence.

Scottsdale city spokesman Mike Phillips said on Friday that a judge reviewed the case and decided that seven days should be suspended if the TNT basketball analyst completes an alcohol treatment program.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says Barkley is scheduled to report to jail on Saturday morning.

The 45-year-old Barkley pleaded guilty last month to two misdemeanor DUI charges.

He was stopped by police Dec. 31 shortly after leaving a Scottsdale nightclub and was arrested after failing a field sobriety test.

Barkley's attorney could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.

Stern says adjustments need to be made

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Commissioner David Stern says the NBA and union might have to make "some adjustments" to the labor contract when it expires in two years, but he foresees no "doomsday scenario" for the league because of the current economic crisis.

Minnesota Timberwolves coach Kevin McHale said recently the NBA had entered its own "Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac era of subprime loans" because of player salaries. He added that players will need to make substantial concessions at the bargaining table.

Agent David Falk predicted to The New York Times that the next round of talks will be "very, very extreme," and owners could shut down the league for a year or two if the players don't agree to the owners' demands.

"I'd just say the 'doomsday scenario' is that the NBA is somehow going to be irretrievably damaged by some event or another," Stern said Monday at George Washington University, where Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin was inducted into the School of Business Sports Executives Hall of Fame. "The predictions of the demise of the NBA were frequent and profound [over the years], and they've always been wrong."

Last month, the NBA lined up $200 million to distribute to teams needing additional cash.

"We've managed to keep the ship afloat, and I think we will continue to do that this time," Stern said. "I'm not unduly pessimistic. I think when we see where this economy comes out, there may be some adjustments that are necessary at the team level and at the league level. But I think that in our players and in our union, we find a group of realists that are sensitive of the needs of our fans and our sponsors, and I'm optimistic from that perspective that we will be able to ultimately work something out.

"I'm not optimistic or pessimistic about the economy, I'm just assuming the worst and hoping for the best as we seek to stabilize ourselves amid a storm of difficult economic times."

Stern said revenues will be "up a percent or 2" for this season, but he is "quite concerned" about next year.

"We certainly see that our sponsors are hurting, and we're working really hard to do what we can to minimize that hurt and to keep our business going."

WHORING CONTINUES!!

Fuck yeah. Kobe is on an MVP Mission. Ain't no playing around. Spurs get knocked the fuck out. If Laker clinching the Pacific, knocking out "heavyweights" like Cleveland and Boston, contenders like Houston and San Antonio WITHOUT Bynum. Back the fuck up.

Look into his eyes. Kobe is MVP. Lakers are more glued than ever.

Lamar getting suspended for 1 was fucked up. NBA really has to relook at that rule. How many Brawls at the Palace you gonna get? Ron Artest getting punked by Kobe makes up for that lame ass call by Stern and Friends.

Jackson said that it appears as though Bynum remains a month away from being able to play again which means the 21-year old center would miss the remaining regular-season games and not be back until the playoffs.
