Shaq on Magic center Dwight Howard taking on the Superman persona:

Howard
look at what he is doing, I've been there and done that. Every street he is driving down in Orlando, I have been on that street. Every night club, every restaurant, I have been there and done that. Until he wins three, four championships, then we can talk about him. But right now, he is just like every other big guy. You can run and jump, but you haven't won yet."

Bulls get Salmons and Miller, send Nocioni and Gooden to Kings.
3way deal with Magic, Rox, and Grizzlies: Magic get Rafer Alston, Rox get Lowry and Cook from Grizz, and the Grizz get a future 1st rd pick from Magic.

Suns: Stoudemire could miss 8 weeks

By Marc Stein
ESPN.com

A day after deciding to let the trade deadline pass without making a major money-saving move, the inactivity seemingly has turned incredibly costly for the Phoenix Suns.

The beleaguered Suns announced Friday that Amare Stoudemire was forced to undergo eye surgery to repair a partially detached retina suffered in a Wednesday night rout of the Los Angeles Clippers. It is Stoudemire's second eye injury since October and the All-Star forward could miss the rest of the regular season.

Stoudemire's return to physical activity has been estimated at eight weeks by the Suns. He underwent surgery Friday morning, although the club said in a statement that "recovery varies on a case-by-case basis."

The Suns were just starting to feel a sense of optimism about salvaging something from this painful season after replacing coach Terry Porter with Alvin Gentry on Monday, ringing up 280 points in back-to-back victories over the Clippers and getting the go-ahead Thursday from owner Robert Sarver to keep hold of Stoudemire and Shaquille O'Neal after shopping both this month in an attempt to significantly reduce Sarver's payroll.

But the injury suffered by Stoudemire when he was poked in the eye during his 42-point game against the Clippers means the Suns will have to try to make the playoffs without him, which was not going to be easy even with a healthy Stoudemire. The Suns awoke Friday as the West's No. 9 team in an eight-team race with a record of 30-23, one game short of the eighth spot.

Stoudemire suffered a partially torn iris early in training camp in October after being inadvertently poked in the eye by then-teammate Boris Diaw. Stoudemire suffered no damage to the retina or cornea at that time, but said he would likely wear protective goggles for the rest of his career to keep his eyes safe. But Stoudemire didn't stay with the goggles long, saying they compromised his on-court comfort level.

"We are very glad to hear that Amare should have a 100 percent recovery relative to his vision and his long-term prognosis is excellent," Suns president Steve Kerr said in a statement after Stoudemire had surgery.

"Obviously, it is very disappointing to lose him at this time. We are all very excited about the progress the team is making, but Amare's health and the health of all our players is our No. 1 concern."

Charges brought for two deaths

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- A 36-year-old attorney fatally shot the former girlfriend and infant daughter of New York Knicks player Eddy Curry during a domestic-related dispute, according to police and published reports.

Fredrick Goings of Chicago was charged Sunday with two counts of first-degree murder, Cook County State's Attorney spokeswoman Sally Daly said.

Police said Goings was arrested Friday evening as he was getting into his car outside a relative's place in Chicago. Goings has not made any statements to authorities and is not cooperating in the investigation, Lt. Denis Walsh said.

It was not immediately clear who was representing Goings. A message left at his Chicago law office Sunday was not returned. Goings was due in bond court on Monday.

The bodies of 24-year-old Nova Henry and her 9-month-old daughter, Ava, were found in their Chicago apartment on Jan. 24. Both died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Henry also was the mother of ex-Chicago Bulls player Curry's 3-year-old son, who was found unharmed at the scene.

Court records show that Goings was Henry's attorney in a paternity case with Curry involving Ava.

According to the Chicago Tribune, records show that DNA tests confirmed Ava was Curry's daughter. Curry, through Knicks spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz, declined comment. Messages left Sunday for his attorney were not immediately returned.

Police said Goings and Henry had "a relationship" and the motive for the shooting was "domestic related" but declined to elaborate.

According to police, Nova Henry let Goings into the apartment on Jan. 24 and the two quarreled.

"What happened inside that apartment will have to come out at a later date," Walsh told reporters Sunday. "There obviously was an argument."

Police said surveillance images and other evidence linked Goings to the case, but authorities declined to give details.

Goings has been practicing law since April 2005, according to state records.

Divac to preside over Olympic effort

Associated Press

BELGRADE, Serbia -- Former NBA star Vlade Divac was elected president of Serbia's Olympic Committee on Tuesday.

The former Los Angeles Lakers, Charlotte Hornets and Sacramento Kings center won the post after current president Ivan Curkovic withdrew his candidacy.

Divac said he wants to help "create better conditions for our sportsmen."

"Basketball has taught me not only how to compete, but also to be a team leader," Divac said.

The 41-year-old Divac worked as an adviser on sports for the Serbian government. His candidacy for the Olympic committee was put forward by the Serbian Basketball Association.

After retiring from basketball, Divac moved to his native Serbia, where he has a business and runs a humanitarian organization.

Honestly, I like Tmac and all, but I think Houston's gotta start thinking about trading him next year. Gotta get someone else to support Yao now.

Devin Harris miracle shot.

Barkley pleads guilty in DUI case

ESPN.com news services

Charles Barkley pleaded guilty to drunken-driving charges in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Monday and will serve time in jail, court records show.

The TNT basketball analyst and former All-Star faced two misdemeanor charges of DUI from a New Year's Eve arrest in Scottsdale. He also pleaded responsible to a third charge of running a red light, according to KTAR Radio.

Barkley will serve five days in jail, must enter an alcohol awareness program and was fined more than $2,000. Under Arizona law, he'll also be forced to install an ignition interlock device on his vehicles. He starts serving his sentence March 21.

Barkley, 45, had a blood-alcohol level of .149 percent, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 percent in Arizona when he was pulled over.

Barkley took a six-week leave of absence from his job with TNT but returned recently after apologizing for the incident.

"I think that a DUI is unacceptable," he added. "That can't happen and I've got to challenge other people, not just celebrities or jocks. You have to really think before getting behind the wheel after you've been drinking."

Blazers' injury-prone Oden to miss two more games

HOUSTON (AP) -- Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden will miss at least two more games because of a bone chip in his left knee.

Oden was hurt in a collision during a game at Golden State before the All-Star break. The 7-foot Oden missed the Rookie Challenge and will miss sit out Tuesday's game in Houston and Wednesday's game in San Antonio.

Coach Nate McMillan said there was a "slight chance" Oden would participate in practice on Thursday. McMillan said he wanted to see Oden run before determining when Oden would play again.

"We thought, everybody thought, he would be able to be moving by now," McMillan said. "Things just keep getting bumped back."

McMillan said doctors have assured him that the injury won't turn into a long-term absence. But McMillan admitted he's starting to get worried.

"We are into the part of the season where we need our bigs," McMillan said.

Oden, the top pick in the 2007 draft, sat out last season after microfracture surgery on his right knee. He missed six games early this season with a foot injury.

The 7-foot Oden has averaged nine points and just over seven rebounds in 39 games this season. Joel Przybilla started for Oden on Tuesday.

Celtics sign Moore for rest of season

By Chris Broussard
ESPN.com

The Boston Celtics on Tuesday signed 7-foot forward Mikki Moore, a free agent who was recently waived by Sacramento, for the veteran's minimum of $1.1 million. Moore's salary will be pro-rated.

An 11-year veteran who has played for eight teams, Moore averaged 3.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in 16.2 minutes a game for Sacramento. Still, several playoff-contending teams were interested in signing him, including Denver, Dallas and New Orleans.

"It was a tough decision for Mikki," his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said, "but he's known [Celtics coach] Doc Rivers for a long time and they have a good relationship. And at the end of the day, they're the defending champs and they have a heck of an opportunity to get back to the Finals."

Moore played three games for Boston during the 2002-03 season.

Pruitt arrested on suspicion of DUI

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Police say Boston Celtics guard Gabe Pruitt has been arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of drunken driving.

Officer April Harding says the 22-year-old Pruitt was pulled over in Hollywood shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday and later booked on suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence.

The Celtics had lost 93-91 to the Los Angeles Clippers a few hours earlier. Harding says records showed that Pruitt had not yet posted his $5,000 bail.

Pruitt is from the Los Angeles area and played college basketball for Southern California.

Report: NBA plans to borrow money

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- SportsBusiness Journal reports the NBA plans to borrow $175 million to distribute to teams in need of additional cash.

The deal comes at a time when leagues are laying off staffs and cutting ticket prices. It will allow the NBA to distribute up to $11.66 million to 15 teams that responded to a league survey gauging interest in the money, SportsBusiness Journal said.

The report says the league plans to borrow the money Thursday.

The report also says JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America arranged the private-placement deal, in which non-banking lenders extend the cash at a fixed rate. In this case, the interest rate is 8.27 percent for $100 million; 7.45 percent for the remaining $75 million.

Teams can use the money for any purpose.
