Malone prepares for 'tough decision'

By Ric Bucher
ESPN The Magazine

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Having a stepfather on life support prevented Karl Malone from attending Friday's induction of his Utah Jazz teammate John Stockton and coach Jerry Sloan to the Basketball Hall of Fame, but Malone surprised them by flying in for Saturday night's HOF dinner.

"My stepfather Ray is on life support," Malone said at the Mohegan Sun Resort & Casino after flying in from his home in Louisiana. "My family and I decided to get away from that for a few hours and come here and then go right back."

Malone's absence on Friday was attributed to "an illness in the family" by Stockton in his induction speech without any further details. Malone, who formed arguably the game's greatest pick-and-roll tandem with Stockton over 18 seasons, is eligible to enter the Hall next year.

There was never a doubt that he would attend some part of the weekend's festivities, Malone indicated. The only question was when, based on his stepfather's condition.

"Stock left me messages all day today and wanted to know how things were going," Malone said. "I didn't text him back because I would've told him I was coming. We're only going to be here for three or four hours. It was just a respect thing. I came to get a hug from John and Jerry Sloan."

Malone indicated that the family might have to decide on Monday whether or not to take his stepfather off life support.

"We have a real tough decision to make," he said.

Russell issues direct challenge to MJ

ESPNChicago.com

Bryon Russell took it as a compliment that Michael Jordan called him out during his Hall of Fame acceptance speech, and Russell responded on Tuesday with a direct challenge.

"Mike, if you want this, come get it," Russell said on the "Waddle & Silvy" show on ESPN 1000. "I'm out here in Calabasas (Calif.). You have the private jet, come on and fly out here.

"The second game can take place in Chicago. I'll fly out there. Let's make a nice, little challenge, have some fun with it and entertain once again."

During Jordan's speech on Friday, he said Russell told him in 1994 that he wanted to guard Jordan. During the 1998 NBA Finals, when Jordan's Chicago Bulls faced Russell's Utah Jazz, Jordan reminded Russell of his wish and said it was about to be realized. Russell was the defender Jordan shook before rising to take the clinching shot in Game 6.

"My response was after all this time I'm still on Mike's mind," Russell said. "I must have done something to leave a good impression, because he's still talking about me to this day, about giving me what I wanted.

"I challenged him [in 1994]. I got him out of retirement, and if I did, it was good for the game."

Russell said Jordan's recollection of the '94 challenge was correct.

"I think that's when he was doing baseball," Russell said. "I ran into him and was like, 'Hey man, why did you retire? I wanted to get a chance to stop you. Say I stopped the greatest.'

"He just smiled is all. Come '96, he said, 'Hey Russell, remember what you said to me?' I was like, 'Yeah.' He said, 'You're about to get your chance.' I got my chance. But when you break down every possession I was on him, I guarantee you I didn't get the bulk of all the points he had. I'm pretty sure I played better defense than anyone who played defense against him."

Russell, 39, said he's confident he could beat Jordan, 46.

"He likes challenges, so I'm challenging him once again," Russell said. "I'm always going to be forever tied to him, so why not give fans what they want again?"

And what would be at stake? "Put up our egos," Russell said. "Bragging rights."

Artest: My fault if Lakers titleless in '10

Associated Press

SAN DIEGO -- Ron Artest says that if the Los Angeles Lakers don't repeat as NBA champions, fans can point their fingers at him.

Artest made the statement Monday during a visit to San Diego to promote the Lakers' exhibition game against Denver at the San Diego Sports Arena on Oct. 23.

The Lakers open training camp Sept. 29 at their headquarters in El Segundo.

Artest wore an all-black Kobe Bryant jersey as a tribute to his new teammate.

Cop busted for tipping off drug raid

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- A former Philadelphia police officer has been found guilty of obstruction and lying to authorities for alerting former NBA player Jerome "Pooh" Richardson to an imminent drug raid.

A jury on Thursday convicted Rickie Durham of warning Richardson about the August 2005 raid in a 3 a.m. phone call.

Richardson called a half-sister and told her to leave the New Jersey house she shared with drug kingpin Alton Coles. The couple was arrested hours later.

The federal jury split its verdict, acquitting Durham of three of six counts.

Richardson testified reluctantly Monday against his childhood friend. He was given immunity.

The 42-year-old Durham belonged to a drug task force and called Richardson on an FBI-issued phone.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 6.

NBA LEGENDS GAY ALLEGATIONS!! NOWEI!!  :tama-mad:

MORE DIRT TO SELL BOOKS!!!

Quote
The criticisms are made by Johnson in When The Game Was Ours, which he co-wrote with Larry Bird and author Jackie MacMullan. The book, to be released on Nov. 4, tells the inside story of the most important rivalry in basketball history.

Much of their story involves Thomas, who as captain of the Detroit Pistons served as a primary threat to the championship ambitions of Bird's Celtics and Magic's Lakers. The book offers revelations that have stunned Thomas. Magic addresses years of rumors by finally accusing Thomas of questioning his sexuality after Johnson was diagnosed with HIV in 1991. Magic also admits that he joined with Michael Jordan and other players in blackballing Thomas from the 1992 Olympic Dream Team, saying, "Isiah killed his own chances when it came to the Olympics. Nobody on that team wanted to play with him. ... Michael didn't want to play with him. Scottie [Pippen] wanted no part of him. Bird wasn't pushing for him. Karl Malone didn't want him. Who was saying, 'We need this guy?' Nobody.''

"I'm glad that he's finally had the nerve and the courage to stand up and say it was him, as opposed to letting Michael Jordan take the blame for it all these years,'' Thomas responded during one of several interviews he gave to SI.com on Wednesday. "I wish he would have had the courage to say this stuff to me face to face, as opposed to writing it in some damn book to sell and he can make money off it.''

Thomas, who is the first-year coach at Florida International in Miami, confirmed that MacMullan attempted to reach him for comment six months ago, but he declined through his publicist to speak with her.

Magic's most shocking accusation, however, is that Thomas was responsible for spreading rumors that Johnson was gay or bisexual after Johnson tested positive for HIV, forcing his retirement at age 32. "Isiah kept questioning people about it,'' Magic says. "I couldn't believe that. The one guy I thought I could count on had all these doubts. It was like he kicked me in the stomach.''

The best Magic Johnson book still is his 32 Ways to Bidness one.
