Nets drop Carmelo Anthony deal

ESPN.com news services

NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has told the team to end discussions on the Carmelo Anthony deal.

In a news conference before Wednesday night's game against Utah, Prokhorov said he decided on Tuesday to stop pursuit of the Nuggets' All-Star forward, unhappy with how things played out in public.

The new owner says the deal took too long and became too expensive.

"I'm not happy with the way ... this deal has gone until now," said Prokhorov. "It has taken too long. It has been played out in public and it certainly has taken a toll on the players and I believe that it has cost us several games. I think management did a great job, but there comes a time when the price is simply too expensive. I'm instructing our team to walk away from the deal.

"And the meeting that our management was supposed to have in Denver with Carmelo [on Thursday] is hereby canceled."

Prokhorov said the goal is still to win a championship within five years.

Previously, New Jersey had offered to ship six players and at least two first-round draft picks to Denver in a deal that would have sent Anthony to the Nets along with former Pistons teammates Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton.

Derrick Favors, the 19-year-old rookie who was rumored to be the centerpiece in the multiple-player deal, was shocked upon hearing the news in the locker room before the game.

"I don't have to worry about it no more," Favors said. "It's over with. This is my first time hearing it. I'm excited."

Said Prokhorov: "We will come back to the table every time we need the right player for the team. But really I'm not ready to overpay. Because as soon as you make a mistake in the NBA, you can wait for the next chance for the next five or six years. That's why I prefer to be really patient and I want to thank the New Jersey fans for their patience."

Phil Jackson: Celts above Heat in East

ESPNLosAngeles.com

If the Los Angeles Lakers made it to the NBA Finals, coach Phil Jackson wouldn't necessarily expect to see the Miami Heat there with them.

He told Max Kellerman on 710 ESPN that he respected the individual talents of Heat superstars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, but he didn't think Miami could overtake the Boston Celtics in the playoffs.

"I personally don't think they can get by Boston," Jackson said. "I think Boston is too good a team. I think a team is still going to win.

"But there's a chance that [the Heat] ... can maybe round themselves into a team by that time and [win].

"Boston is older and they have to go through the rest of the schedule without having some kind of breakdown of players. [Ray] Allen and [Kendrick] Perkins, etc., they are just really a good team.

"But there's nothing like the great athletic skill and dynamism that [James and Wade] have and [Chris] Bosh is a terrific player in his own right. There's no doubt about their individual skills."

Jackson also talked about his use of the media to get his message across to his players.

"There is the idea that you can encourage the team through public statements ... I do sometimes say the most honest thing to reporters," Jackson said. "I'll be very blunt and make a statement that's as true as I can make it. But there's always a little encouragement for the team to do better and to improve at a certain level.

"I think the press is there for your services as a coach. I think that's a message you can use to get across."

Marcus Camby needs knee surgery

Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Trail Blazers say center Marcus Camby will need arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

Camby hurt his knee in Portland's victory Monday night over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The team says an MRI exam was initially clear, but closer examination revealed a partial meniscus tear.

There is no timetable for Camby's return. His surgery has not yet been scheduled.

The news came as the Blazers prepared to play in Sacramento Wednesday night.

The team has been besieged with injuries this season. All-Star guard Brandon Roy had arthroscopic surgery on both of his knees Monday. His return also was uncertain.

Roy has missed 18 games this season because of soreness in his knees, which he has said is caused by a lack of cartilage. He was averaging 16.6 points in 23 games this season. For his career, the 2007 rookie of the year is averaging 19.9 points and 4.9 assists.

In November, the team announced that center Greg Oden, the No. 1 draft pick in 2007, would miss the season because of microfracture surgery on his left knee. Oden missed his rookie year because of microfracture surgery on his right knee.

Second-year forward Jeff Pendergraph injured his knee in the preseason and required season-ending surgery. And rookie guard Elliot Williams has undergone surgery this season on both knees.

Camby's injury leaves the Blazers thin at center. Joel Przybilla returned early in December from a ruptured patella, but his minutes have been limited.

The Blazers also have second-year forward Dante Cunningham, who started the second half against the Timberwolves.

Camby was averaging 5.9 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.87 blocks in 39 games this season, all starts. His absence will be significant not only because of his contribution on the floor, but because of his veteran leadership in the locker room.

The 6-foot-11 forward and center is in his 15th season in the NBA.

..........

The hurt just keeps on rolling for the Blazers.

lol Ron

Quote
After initially expressing indifference toward the league rescinding his technical fouls and accompanying $4,000 fine in the Lakers' 99-92 loss Sunday to the Clippers, forward Ron Artest acknowledged relief.

"I didn't want to just give it away," Artest said at his locker before the Lakers' game at Staples Center Monday against the Oklahoma City Thunder. "I could've bought 10,000 In-N-Out Burgers. I rather would've done that than give it away. I'm going to get 10 burgers [after the game]. I love In-N-Out. It's addicting. It's the only reason I'm here in L.A. If it wasn't for In-N-Out Burger, I probably would've gone to Memphis or something."

^ werd, also posted in Kobe Bryant thread. You gonna be watching it LIVE?

Kobe sums up all the Haters perfectly: "Don't know, don't care," Kobe Bryant said when asked if the team was being criticized too harshly. "People that criticize, they can all kiss my ass. I don't give a shit. I really don't. I keep the train moving. We're gonna keep on moving and in June, they'll say nothing.
