Title: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

how is there not already a smash bros brawl thread? i know we all expected to have the game by now, but its been delayed TWICE. it's gonna be a great game so let's discuss it. any new surprise characters you're hoping for? which character do you think you're going to start out with? anyone you're hoping to come back that hasn't yet been announced? etc. the game is gonna have online play and a stage creation feature. who else is ready for this game?<br><br>remember to check out www.smashbros.com (http://www.smashbros.com) for updates every weekday.

I'm a big Kirby fan and I can't wait to play with Sr Meta Knight (and I believe King DeDeDe is also included?). They better release this fast..

I just can't believe it's pushed back AGAIN. March 9th is too long to wait and by that time I'll be knee deep in theatre with no time to play anyway. *sigh*
At least it will be really awesome. And I also hope Jigglypuff comes back. She was my number 1.

Apparently in 1 of the japanese trailers, when they are introducing the stickers, in the sticker info for Groudon, you can see the icons for Pikachu, Pokemon Trainer, Jigglypuff, and Lucario, making people think that Jigglypuff and Lucario are in the game

I wanna use Sonic for fun value and Pikman just cause he's in there

The intro movie from the JP version is out:

35 characters confirmed, 39 if you count alternates like Zelda/Sheik.

WINDWAKER LINK BETTER NOT BE A RUMOR.

^ He's confirmed.
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: Roxasu on January 30, 2008, 04:03:24 PM
based on a screenshot at Serebii.net
the complete list is:

-Start-
Mario
Fox
Link
Zelda
Peach
Bowser
Pikachu
DK
Pkmn Trainer
Olmar
Diddy
King DeeDee
Lucas
Kirby
Ice Climbers
Metaknight
Pit
Samus
Yoshi
Ike
Wario

-Secret-
Sonic
Snake
Jigglypuff
Game and Watch
Gannondorf
Falco
Capt. Falcon
Lucario
Ness
Marth
Windwaker Link
Robot

The screenshots on the official SSBB site for the char select screen doesn't show the already confirmed Sonic and Snake, meaning they are hidden somewhere

Also, in the case of Pkmn Trainer and Zelda you can choose which form/pkmn you wanna start with at the char select screen

Looks like a pretty nice list.

I wonder if there are further hidden characters.

^ He's confirmed.

Sweet!

I'm super excited to see Marth back in action as well. I don't dig Ike that much (mainly because I played that Fire Emblem... and enh, he wasn't my favorite). And what's the deal with the Robot? I mean, it looks pretty cool... but what!?
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: eglue on January 30, 2008, 06:28:51 PM
i hope link/wind waker link, captain falcon/ganondorf, fox/falco, and mario/luigi are not copies of each others movesets. it'd be cooler if they had their own set of moves instead of just being copies except faster/slower/stronger/etc. falco was my character in melee though so thats cool he's back.
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

^ He's confirmed.

Yes! I f*cking love that Link!  I was disapointed because I heard Young Link wouldn't be in brawl, but Windwaker Link definitely makes up for it. It's still Young Link (Toon Link in this case) in a sense  :hee:

btw, thanks for making this thread eglue. I was so close to doing it about 2 days ago, don't know why I didn't

Complete List : http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2007/07/03/official-super-smash-bros-brawl-character-list.htm
35 characters total.

(http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/5752/completebrawlrosterdf8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

The roster is insane!! Fox was my fav in Melee so i cant wait to try out Wolf. Im also excited to try out Meta Knight, Windwaker Link,  Snake, and ROB just for kicks.  Cant wait till March 9th!!!!

So what kind of controller will you guys be brawling with?  I personally am I mixed between the GC controller or the Wii classic controller.  I'll prolly go with GC cuz im familiar with its controls and it has rumble features.

Post by: winner on January 31, 2008, 08:59:24 AM
Just got my hands on it and had my first shot at the story mode. Sorry, since I haven't played the earlier game, dunno what's changed.
Pretty fun so far. But I really need to get another controller and a 2nd player.  :P

Here's some pics of the character section from the manual.

I didn't know about Sheik, from one of the newer zelda games? (i only got to link to the past...):
(http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/6246/dsc00066vo5.th.jpg) (http://img529.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00066vo5.jpg)

For all the Kirby fans:
(http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/9443/dsc00067lo2.th.jpg) (http://img163.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00067lo2.jpg)

Samus and Fox (samus switching to zero-suit after finishing move, which i remember is the same as before):
(http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/3988/dsc00068hj1.th.jpg) (http://img149.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00068hj1.jpg)

Here's the vs character select screen. Only 21 characters to begin with, so I'm sure the other characters are all considered secret and must be unlocked (including snake and sonic etc...).
A tiny bit of fanservice from the big N. Color-change (using A or B) also added cosmetic changes for 2 characters, like PikaAsh!:
(http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/2498/dsc00069mm2.th.jpg) (http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00069mm2.jpg)

...and Evillink :twisted::
(http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/9426/dsc00070lo0.th.jpg) (http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00070lo0.jpg)

Finally the photo mode (hey, it's my hobby!).
Win fights, get coins, shoot spaceships game with coins, get character trophies and stickers. My first photo (note to self, need to buy an SD card...):
(http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/3082/dsc00071fm7.th.jpg) (http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00071fm7.jpg)

Judging from in-game footage, I'd say Pit and ROB seem interesting.

And winner, how's Wario?
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: winner on January 31, 2008, 01:29:11 PM
Stopped with story-mode, and played the "classic" mode option next to it. Tried Wario, Link and Pikachu.

Inside were a lot of nice stuff. like:

1. Special characters appear (I think they're all NPCs). Like metal wario, giant pit.
...and like some people guessed, the boss is:
(http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/8007/dsc00075pb7.th.jpg) (http://img162.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00075pb7.jpg)

2. You get your selected character's trophy after beating him. You also get coins, and also rewards in a glass shelf.

3. Even the end-credits after the boss fight is a shooting mini-game...  XD

4. Then you'll see this:
(http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/2083/dsc00077nt0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(Dunno if all are like this) Beat the challenger, and you got a new select character! (just got C. Falcon)

===========================================================================================

Update: glass shelf only comes up after you've done a specific challenge (like complete destroying all targets the challenge between rounds in classic mode). Don't use the hammers found at the bottom, they are scarce and should only be used for the rewards with the harder challenges (too late for me though....)

Unlocked characters: C. Falcon, Marth, Luigi XD

Gamefaqs already has the way to unlock some of the newcomers:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/code/928518.html (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/code/928518.html)

Sonic seems so far away now....

Update: just got Sonic in classic mode too, so gamefaqs is not totally correct yet~ Cos I'm nowhere near the end of SSE.

Thanks for putting that up

lol, the beginning part and the end with Link and Ganondorf was funny

Kirby and Metaknight's seemed like some of the weakest overall. Well idk, maybe if the oponent had a higher damage, it would have been better for them

I liked:

DK: Donkey Konga, that was a fun game

Pokemon trainer: It takes me back to those days when I would play Pokemon blue/yellow on my gameboy

Link: He's my favorite game character. The smash was great, cool and strong

Zelda/Sheik: Cuz of that matrix-like part

The Iceclimbers: It was strong and I liked the iceburg

Lucas: I didn't like it, I just thought it was funny how Ness went  "Ok", even though that's not gonna happen during Lucas' other smashes(unless the player does so..w/e)

Snake:  It was just awesome

Sonic:  Because Super Sonic is just classic

Toon Link: yeah, his was the same as Link, but I’ve always liked Young Link better

Lucario looks pretty damn awesome.

This game needs to hurry up and come out in the US already ;_;

Update: just got Sonic in classic mode too, so gamefaqs is not totally correct yet~ Cos I'm nowhere near the end of SSE.

Pssst...GameFAQs is wrong about a lot of stuff

We don't verify any user-submitted secrets, so if there's something incorrect on there, use the "have we been fooled" link to report it please :)

Gratz on getting the game already, by the way.  I'm not hardcore enough to mod my Wii so I have to wait until they're through dicking around with localization.

Meowchi -
It's taken over all my game time! (halo 3 multi can wait~)
Used an afternoon and just clocked in 42% in the SSE mode and got Falco at the same time.
Also asked my cousin to come over and play the vs mode and SSE tomorrow, cos that's where SSBB's heart lies. :yep:

3 things that've suprised me for SSE:
1. The mechanics really was simple enough for new gamers, like me, to start off really comfortably. and have a ton of space to improve skills.
2. There sure is a lot of action/cool/cute CG moments in-between!
3. It's crazy how much nintendo stuff they threw into it. I'm sure fans will start getting nostalgia... between all the craziness!  :D

Fracture -
I didn't report it, cos I think there's multiple ways to unlock the character (and the way listed might've been correct). So I'll let the pro guys do their job to find it out! :P

I'd strongly suggest everybody to not mod their Wii for this game. Cos when I asked for the game, the first thing the seller asked was if I modded my Wii. And the game disc had a firmware update, think it would be safer to wait till the english ver.

and this too, lol.

Something that I've always loved about SSB are the character taunts in the game. I hope some are funny and cool this time around

ahhh, there's still a month left before the US gets the game. I already wanna cross this off my wish list.

R.O.B doesn't even do much when it was first released, more of an accessory thing.

back onto the game, theres a rip version of the game already, although its only DVD5. the game is a partial rip, not everything is fully functional yet and there might be some errors every now and then, but nothing serious.  as for the update, nothing will happen to the wii if you update it from that version.  aside from dual channels, but you can just move those asaide if it bothers you =D
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Just played over 70% of SSE. Got 32 characters now, all hidden characters were unlocked in SSE (after they show up in the story, or when the character is a main part of that level). So it isn't really hard to get them all, just a matter of time.

Still missing 3 though, which are Wolf, Jigglypuff and Toon Link.
Just got Gannondorf, a slo-mo character but nearly all killer moves.

Played a little versus, it's pretty exciting and crazy. Guess I'll check out online gaming later. :P

hells yea sits.

so far i've unlocked luigi, marth and ness. having a blast trying out all the characters.  can't play SSE mode just yet cuz of it crashing in DVD5 mode.
taking some time getting used to the stuff again since jump + z attack doesn't work on brawl anymore -_-
pkmn trainer and ike are a blast to play as too
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: winner on February 05, 2008, 07:34:40 AM
Note: No spoilers, don't worry. :)

Finished SSE last night.  8)
My first team was totally unable to defeat the last boss, and I had to arrange a stronger team AND had to continue 5 times to beat it. Totally the hardest part so far.
We both died at the same time, so I only won by a nose.

Funnily enough, both PokeTrainer and Ike were in the team. hehe! The rest I used were Kirby, Metaknight, Samus and Pikachu (kinda shows which characters I think are over-powered in the air).

But I only have 86%... how many unlockables are there!  XD

I just pre-order mine with one of the video games franchise.  Can't wait for it.  I heard from the saleman it's awesome as well.  he actually bought one from Japan and a japanese Nintendo wii just to play it.  he kinda showcasing it in the store, the cover that is, not the game itself.  kinda jealous...
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: winner on February 11, 2008, 11:36:55 AM
I unlocked the 3 remaining characters last week. Also did classic mode for half the characters, completed the 41 events, did boss battle challenge, and tried my hand at the batting challenge (my best so far is ~620m using Bowser).

So I'm mainly trying to open all the prize windows in the glass shelf (if only I knew japanese). Which makes me want to say again, it's crazy how much fanservice they put into this game.
(quote from somewhere: this isn't just a great and fun game, it isn't just going to be a total success for Nintendo and Wii, and it won't be only breaking a lot of sales records. It's a celebration to gaming history contributed by much of the gaming community. And collaboration of such magnitude won't happen again for some time... until the next SB at least~).

Also got into a lot more vs mode with my cousin and 2 CPUs. (nearly tried the whole roster)
Made him go "WTF!" when I opened the 'Nintendog' helper! That's gonna be one of my best moments ever in gaming. \^_^/

I'm barely about 22% done with SSE. Would have probably done more but my mom had me do a bunch of crap around the house which took a few hours of my expected playing time. -___-

For Toon Link. I said so before. some of the tips outside are still a little iffy. I don't think it even matters who you use when playing classic!

I'm guessing he doesn't even challenge you in classic, unless you've finished SSE (or at least gone pretty far). Because I remember he was the last character I got (after Sonic... which is also near the end).
So either keep Brawling or SSE'ing+classic. Same for Wolf, Jigglypuff...
(I actually like the idea of multiple ways for unlocking stuff, to suit the player. more games should do this... instead of always doing the kill all 1000 enemies in 5 minutes in super hell mode and S ranking)

I could be totally wrong about this though! :D

Not exactly a spoiler, toon link doesn't show up in SSE... maybe cos he was one of the last characters added to the roster, or fear of a "Link timeline paradox"... XD

So keep burning SSE guys! :shakeit:

They have those, kind of. We have this thing you just set two wiimotes on and they charge. It comes with a special pack/back for the wiimote and everything. I can't remember how much it cost, but it was well worth it. Definitely beats spending a million dollars on batteries that you have to change like twice a week.

Anyway, to stay on topic... SSBB FTW.

Yeah I've seen pics of some, but for some reason I just want an official wii charger(if they ever come out with one), like the 360 official one. But idk, maybe I'll get one of those soon if I become to desperate, because I'm tired of buying fucking AA batteries.  Did you get you rechargeable thing at a game store?

I got Snake today. I kinda figured it would be hard to get him because of..who he is. But he was super easy

i use regular recharger and rechargeable batteries for my wiimotes.

i had a problem where my wiimote wouldnt work. i accidently hit it against a table and it stopped responding. the next day, i tried smacking it and it miraculously worked again.

I could use my GC controllers too but I'm gonna have to move the wii to some place else, since the controllers go into the top. But there is currently no place to put it but the floor...

If the wiimote doesn't start working somehow I think I'm gonna buy a new one and return the borked one in the new packaging >_> I just need to figure out which places take back returned merch or atleast exhange it... I see the worst that can happen is I end up with 3 working wiimotes. :P

i got my copy on the day it came out, but only have time to play with it for a couple of hours total.  plus i haven't play any games for years, much less fighting where hand-eye coordination is crucial, so i suck, at the moment.  i got beat by my little 7 y.o. cousin.  he's at the age where all he does is play game and he also own the previous smash bros. game so his skill is better than me.  everytime he beat me, he boast his win.  i may suck now, but i hope i can regain my prowess and gaming skill that i had back in the day.  this is what happen when all u do is study and work and have no time for games for the past 3 years....
and that is also why i don't think i can stand up to those online.  maybe later...

btw, i like to play mostly as pikachu... that cute little mouse packs a quite a punch...
and Ike is my second fav.

If I'm not here, at school, or eating, I'm most likely playing this damn game XD

(though I did skip lunch today and played in my friend's dorm on campus for 3 1/2 hours straight >_> He had stuff to do so we had to leave :/)

I'm still at that damn maze thing in SSE though, I just hate having to back track >_>
So I pretty much just have the characters that you get from playing that much.

This is a really bad time to be doing this since I have so much crap to do for classes x_x

As for online play, I can't seem to be able to connect to a game... but I can spectate...

Just finished unlocking all the characters.

Congrats dude. I just unlocked Ganondorf today, I'm almost complete
I'm at the maze level.  It's really annoying and long. Any one have tips? or do you suggest that I just keep on going through the doors that I encounter and also fight the neon-green characters and bosses
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: Asmodai on March 14, 2008, 04:46:26 AM
I cleared all the doors - at a certain point the maps will start highlighting which ones you still need to clear. After that, work your way towards the bottom right - one of the square~ish rooms there has a vortex/nebula in it which is actually a door to fight the final boss.

I'm still only listed as 81% complete SSE mode after beating it - I must have missed a hidden door somewhere.
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: Slack on March 14, 2008, 05:36:02 AM
Actually, I believe that the ending maze is semi-randomly generated.  For me, the final room was pretty close to the middle of the map.
That said, you need to clear out all the fights before that vortex door thing opens up.

As for the % complete, I'm pretty sure that the extra % comes from going back through some of the other stages.  For example, when you go through previously visited stages to get some of the secret characters.  After doing some of that stuff, I'm around 85%.

Also, maybe I missed a trophy somewhere, but for some reason Ike and some others disappeared from my lineup.
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: winner on March 14, 2008, 08:57:50 AM
^Asmodai: Yeah, think you missed a few of the secret doors. :P
I had 86% when it ended, and 92% after reviting and getting jiggly and wolf. But it doesn't matter. what're they gonna give you for 100%, another trophy?!

^mode107: Since the neon-green chara (evil roster, right?) free your roster back and all are needed to be freed to open the vortex for the boss-fight, so no choice there. The only speedier way is to jump past all the lower-class enemies.  :)
Think there's only one good tip, use the map to see which paths you've missed and the warp doors to get to where you want a little quicker. ;)
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: StreakInTheSky on March 14, 2008, 11:41:46 PM
I beat the maze yesterday

Yeah my vortex thing was also in the middle of the map, you'll know what door it is by a huge purple arrow.
And yeah you have to fight all the bosses and green characters to get through it. To get the map to tell you the boss fights you need you need to get to all four main save points. those are the ones with the teleportation things on the platforms.

I still need toon link and wolf though... maybe I'll go through and look for stuff I missed this weekend. As for stages I think all I need is final destination and some melee stages.

i still cant master donkey kong, hes too slow lol
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: StreakInTheSky on March 17, 2008, 11:33:48 AM
I guess sonic's special is pretty cheap, but the character himself really has no power moves at all. So it balances out. Just don't let him get it.

Overall I thought the characters are pretty balanced. It really depends on how the person uses the character.
There are some people who can make some of the hardest characters for me to use look cheap, like Snake
But yeah, there are characters who are easier to learn to use than others.

Donkey Kong is all about power moves and grabbing. Just gotta learn to make good use of that instead of trying to move around.

But if you're talking about slow, Ganondorf takes the cake. Even most of his moves has major delay.

I FINALLY got to play it Friday. I don't own it yet (not enough $$$), but I have friends that do! Luckily, they already had everyone unlocked, so I had my choice.
I definitely think Pit is my favorite new addition. I found him easy to fight with and easy to win with.  I also like the final smash business. That adds a really awesome element to the game. I didn't get to play too much into the one player mode, but what I saw, I really liked.

I was kind of disappointed with Sonic however. He just wasn't that great.

Yeah, I still have a nasty habit to self-death - one of the reasons why Kirby and Jigglypuff (and Pit too now) are good for novice players.

The conveyor belts in Pokemon Stadium 2 can also be a nasty surprise.

And this guy has the names and original game of each song on his blog.

The one I hate is the waterfall one, everyone is too busy trying to get up, and fighting becomes the 2nd priority.

I enjoy kicking the people out of the shelter, especially when it's right before the lava goes over. XD

Also a trick I noticed is if you hang off the ledge the moment it goes over you won't die.

I hate Waterfall too. Apparently once you unlock all the stages you can exclude it from the random rotation. I'll have to get around to doing that.

I forgot to mention how much I love Wolf's up taunt - it's behind only Pikachu's "Pika! Pika!".
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: Tako on March 18, 2008, 07:42:15 AM
just got the game yesterday. I've only unlocked a couple characters so far...

I actually like using Captain Olimar. Maybe it's just my attachment with the Pikmin game, but I think he's pretty sweet.

hm...with the stages, I guess I wouldn't really be able to tell because I only played Final D on Melee, but I feel that a lot of the stages on Brawl have an unnecessary focus on things other than fighting (e.g. playing the mini-game in the WarioWare level and the before-mentioned lava one where you have to hide in the capsule thing).
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: winner on March 18, 2008, 10:46:13 AM
Most of the time, the stage is the actual killer. Not the other 3 brawlers.
But I think that adds the charm to the game. Otherwise, it would be like street fighter... :stoned:
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: Slack on March 18, 2008, 05:48:31 PM
I think what makes a popular great game is the idea that the game can conform to you just as much as you conform to it.  That's what makes this game so popular: the fact that you can play it any way you want.  The sheer number of things to do and fiddle with is just staggering.

If you don't like how random some aspects of the game are, you can tune it to play as seriously as you want by turning off tricky stages and items and even making it HP based rather than % damage.  Conversely, you can make it as wacky as you want, by making insane custom stages and having stuff like a mega-metal-curry-slow-low gravity match with excessive items.  Heck, you can even have a heck of a time just playing by yourself or even co-op.

This game is so good it's downright vexing.  I've probably spent way too much time on it instead of preparing for finals this week!

It depends on who you're playing. I can get the Smash Ball 90% of the time with Lucario. With Gannandorf though there's just no chance.

Yeah I know what you mean.  I think they did a good job of making it long. I just wanted to get through it so that I could get Toon Link

I'm sure that they're intentions were to give us a solo mode that didn't last a short while like the adventure mode from melee but in the end SSE just feels like despite they're good intentions they missed the mark by some. I still appreciate the effort however.

I finally finished SSE in about 7 hours thanks to my roommate guiding me through it. There was no way I could have done it on my own, I didn't pay enough attention while playing to remember which way is I had to go. The FMVs were enyoable. We got a bunch of good laughs out them, like ZS Samus' boobs entering a room before she does, Snake's scenes were cool, and the Final Fantasy like scene towards the end as well.

It depends on who you're playing. I can get the Smash Ball 90% of the time with Lucario. With Gannandorf though there's just no chance.

Mostly my problem is that I always hit just enough that the next person only has to lightly hit it to get it.

Now that I've got every character I realized just how much I didn't know/didn't remember (especially since I dont own Melee because everone I know has it).  I've always played as Link for about 85% of the time, if not I would alternate Fox and Samus in as well. But I guess thanks to playing as everyone for classic mode I see how Peach is actually pretty good.

I still have Link as my main but I alternate much much more frequently with Snake, Lucario and ZSS.
