My preference is old-school hip-hop, and some of the very early stuff in the '90's.
"Yo, microphone check one, two, what is this? The five foot assassin with the roughneck business"
"Are you my mummy?"
"Hello, Sweetie."

first post in the rap thread, dedicated to...

DJ 2ND NATURE

dj 2nd nature works mix tapes and comps for primarily hiphop/rap, but his musical knowledge is surprisingly diverse. in 2004 when pioneer introduced the DVJ turntables (they're dvd-turntables that let you mix video along with audio), he was one of the first djs to get in on vj-ing (video-jockey). i uploaded his 2004 and 2005 mixtapes (though you should probably call them mix-vids) :D

you've gotta see this stuff to believe it. although these are his routines (ie: playlist laid out, transitions and timins practiced over and over again), it's still fuckin impressive to see him scratch audio and mix video at the same time. 2004 mixtape has picture-in-picture so you can see the output video as he mixes, 2005 mixtape is just the output video.

Agreed...all I play is old West Coast gangsta rap, and shit like Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan. The odd DMX and Kanye ain't bad but you know they lifted stuff from the old school.

as long as it's hip hop rap boogie down, it's all good baby 8)

HEY!! cool thatguy...we have a turntable-izm thread somewhere, perhaps ya wanna revive that? Or fuck. Should we just merge ROFL. Where's my Reggae Fans at? XD

But is that shit like...the old CD turntables? I am also wondering (since I might be upgrading to XP) how Mocha, and y'all do your remixes. I've been doing mine in Sound Recorder and it's WACK..I wanna do some fading.

Didn't know about this! Fuckin hilarious!!! -- Deck is mad sharp. One of my fave Wu MCs. I wonder if it's leechable....XD

Listened to Meth's 4-21...much better than Tical 0, but man. his last 3 albums haven't lived up to Tical #1. The few tracks like "Is it Me" and other Wu-Tang members, were pretty deep. Yeah, he's here to remind us to respect The Wu but...what else? You can do better than this Ticallion Stallion.

CHECK OUT THESE MIX TAPES!!

Man, I been hearing about this ... here it is!! Unofficial JPH!P Endorser Samuel L. Fuckin Jackson. If you hate 50 Cent (like Masa :P) just deselect the files :P

To remix, I use a program called Adobe Audition (which used to be Cool Edit I think).  I'll make a beat (i use reason), lay it on Audition, lay the acapella vocals on top, and adjust the pitch/speed/volume/fades accordingly.

Im sure i have it around somewhere.

Or, you can do actual mixing with Virtual Turntables/Atomix.  You can pretty much mix mp3s together on the fly, just like regular Turntables.  Has the speed, crossfader, 2 tables, volume, and everything else.  Has a bunch of plug-ins too, so you can scratch/phazer, backwards spin, etc.  You can do manual scratching with a webcam (you move your hand over a line), but the last time I used it it wasn't working well. Plus, I felt stupid rubbing air.

Its pretty cool.

Its kinda difficult at first, cuz you need to use the keyboard shortcuts and the mouse to do cool things.  Sound quality is alright...  I like to mess around on them once in a while, to live the days I wished i was a DJ =P  Can't afford the real hardware.

I figured out a way to connect it to my soundcard, so I can play a live set on the Winamp thing for people to hear.  But, yeah, I'm wack the digital wheels of steel =P  If you guys had the time, I think it would be pretty cool for the show.  I heard people use the V Turntables in clubs.
word.

nice.
The only thing i don't like about these dj programs is that it gets complicated to do so many things at once.  Maybe I wasnt just meant to be a DJ =P  I'll stick with making songs instead of mixing em.

I really wanna get a MacBook and dabble on Logic Pro.

Oh, there's a Swollen Members song feat. Ghostface and Produced by Alchemist.  WTF?  How did they get them?  I don't like Swollen Members, and I choose to always dislike them.  i dunno why, I think its Madchild's Mullet.

Pharoahe Monch Channels Diddy's Pain, Talks New Album

In an exclusive interview with SOHH, veteran rhyme slinger Pharoahe Monch waxes poetic about penning rhymes for Diddy's new album, working with the late J.Dilla and releasing his first solo set in 7 years.

Fans have been wondering what's been up with the Queens-bred emcee since he released his critically acclaimed solo debut Internal Affairs on Rawkus in '99. Though he's only dropped a single here and there and made limited guest appearances on a few albums, the emcee born Troy Jamerson has not been sitting on his hands as of late. Touring on the regular, including the "Breed Love Odyssey" tour, which also featured Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Pharoahe has been patiently waiting for the right time to remind the game of who he is.

"Basically I've been trying to perfect what I got. I had to deal with a few bad business situations so I've really been waiting for the best opportunity and record label situation," Pharoah told SOHH. "I didn't want to put [an album] out and it be 80%, but I feel real strong about it now. I'm just happy to be getting it out to as many people as possible."

The "it" that he's referring to is his new album, Desire, which is set to be released to the masses via SRC Records. Choosing not to include any guest appearances, Monch is going for self on this his first disc since '99 with the lead single, "Push" about to be released to radio. "I think this album is incredible. I really poured my heart out on this one. It's just a very inspirational record."

Pharoahe has also been busy penning songs for Diddy's new album. He wrote three joints on the LP, saying that the Proactive pretty boy requested him and that the two had great chemistry while working on the project. "He basically told me that he wanted to get really introspective about his pops and that he wanted to talk about his inhibitions and the things that bother him." Monch also worked with will.i.am and Justin Timberlake on a track from the Sergio Mendes album, along with lacing the track "We Must Be In Love" from J.Dilla's last offering The Shining. "Dilla really changed me when it comes to hip hop. So to be a part of his [final] project is one of the biggest things in my career."

Ready to put New York hip-hop back in what he feels is its rightful place, Pharoahe ended the conversation by repping hard for the Rotten Apple. "I think New York breeds some very incredible emcees. It's just time to step up to the plate."

Desire is set to hit shelves on November 23 on SRC Records.

http://www.sohh.com/articles/article.php/9715

FUCK YES! My all time favorite rapper is finally releasing a new album. All new Monch songs are tight as fuck so I'm expections are sky high. Man, I'm so fucking hyped, I thought that he was never gonna drop another album. Desire will be the album of the year :yep:

KOCH TO RELEASE TWO ALBUMS ON NOVEMBER 7TH

Koch will be releasing two big Wu-Affiliated albums on November 7th. First up is the long-awaited final LP by Ol' Dirty Bastard titled "A Son Unique". Along with that, the day will be blessed with "The RZA presents Afro Samurai: The Album", the soundtrack to the urban anime which will released next month.

Damn, that ODB album was supposed to come out like 2 years ago. I got the advance version and unfortunately it's nothing special :(

R.I.P. ODB!

I too heard the advanced copy and there was so much left unfinished :( I hope RZA has some gems in the vault.

The whole 50 Cent vs Puff Daddy battle is just lame. Mase is a fuckin fool, let's see him dance outta this one.

Speaking of which, Kardinal Offishall has a new mix tape:

When will U-God rise again?? Poor dude can't sell any discs XD

AllHipHop.com Interview With U-God

It's probably safe to say that the Wu-Tang Clan, sans actual instruments (a la The Roots), is the only group in Hip-Hop’s history to really come across as an actual band. Yeah, a band. Remember those? I know, you thought those were just for Rock & Rollers. Each member plays his respective role and serves as a piece of a collective unit. During the Wu’s rise to prominence in the mid ‘90s, it was obvious who the band’s lead artists were. The beautiful thing about the Wu, and clearly an indication of just how powerful their movement and music was, is that even the artists who fans ultimately pigeonholed into supporting roles eventually got their chance to make their mark individually.

In October of 1999, U-God dropped his heavily anticipated solo debut, Golden Arms Redemption, and the album went on to perform respectably. But with two more Wu albums, and a slew of solo releases from the other members cutting into his face time, it’d be practically five years until he resurfaced, this time independently with U-Godzilla Presents: The Hillside Scramblers. The project was U-God’s attempt to spread the word about some of the young gunners from his hometown Park Hill Projects, and while it was well received among fans still dwelling in the 36 chambers, it did little to bolster his appeal among mainstream Hip-Hop consumers and critics. The same could be said for his 2005 LP Mr. Excitement. All in all, U-God knows and admits that he hasn’t yet reached his full potential, and while he’s hardly one to disclose many details about his upcoming plans, he definitely knows where his mistakes were made. As Wu-Tang Week progresses, we spoke to Golden Arms about the past, the indie grind, and why his quest for redemption continues.

AllHipHop.com: In Hip-Hop it’s always about what’s new and what’s fresh. You just got off tour and it was crazy… What do you think it is that allows you 13 years after your introduction, and not being a new group, to still come in and really sell out shows and have fans all over the place?

U-God: Well, that’s from putting in a lot of work through the years. Our catalog is humongous. We got one of the biggest catalogs in the mothaf**kin’ industry besides Sugar Hill [Records]. You see a lot of dudes poppin’ off right now, new dudes and all, that but the amount of work we done put in is incredible, man, and those albums still sell and people still come out and still wanna see the old s**t. It’s like A Tribe Called Quest. A Tribe Called Quest ain’t been out in like six or seven years and right now their filling up 3500-seaters. Just because you don’t hear them on the radio don’t mean that they ain’t poppin’! People don’t realize the game, man; the game is deeper than that. If you put in your stones and your bricks for years, you’re gonna have a fan base. It’s like Metallica. Dudes are like the Rolling Stones. So, all we gotta do is drop a new album or drop some new songs and we can go right back out there and go on tour again.

AllHipHop.com: We have a lot of camps out now claiming their a movement. The Wu truly was and is a movement. Why do these other crew’s movements feel so fabricated in comparison?

U-God: Well, they feel like they wanna be us because we ain’t around. We ain’t doin’ nothing. We ain’t doin’ nothing that’s really stickin’ to dudes’ ribs like that right now. So, they feel like they can come out! Before, if you wanted to be like somebody, you was a biter. You was a wack n***a. But right now, that seems to be the style. Monkey see, monkey do. Dudes right now can’t even compare to being the Wu. First of all, if you wanna be the mothaf**kin’ Wu, your first album gotta go four to five million [units sold]. Second, you gotta drop three, four, five more consecutive platinum albums and get a Grammy on one of those mothaf**kin’ joints, like Meth did! So, in order for you to be Wu-Tang, that’s the kinda s**t you gotta put up, those type of numbers, those type of things you gotta do.

AllHipHop.com: You were locked up for most of 36 Chambers and came out and you were able to hop on the two songs…

U-God: Yeah, “Protect Ya Neck” and the “Mystery of Chess Boxing.”

AllHipHop.com: Looking back on the situation you had came out of, do you ever bug out off the fact that you ended up being a character in a video game and that you’d be in a comic book and all this other crazy stuff?

U-God: Right now, the amount of work we put in I would never think it would get to this level. None of us ever thought it would get to this level. We did what we did when we were 21. We were still like in our twenties when we got our platinum album and a lot of cats ain’t achieved that even in their old age. So, we was kinda before our time so when we did get out in the world, s**t was crazy. But hell no, I would never think it was gonna get to a level to the spot I’m on right now, because I only got two joints off and I had to go do my lil’ time out, but when I came home, I had to get back in shape.

AllHipHop.com: You mentioned a new Wu Album. After doing a couple Wu albums, what do you think the experience would be like going in and recording and what kind of new topics and sounds can you explore being that this will be like album number five for the Wu?

U-God: I ain’t gonna say nothing about none of that s**t because I don’t give away my mothaf**kin’ hat tricks and my lil’ tricks in the trade. But more or less, I can say that there’s a lot of things to talk about. What’s going on? A lot of books out there that dudes ain’t up on, lot of knowledge, Illuminati s**t is still in effect, Enron, scams that people doin’…A lot to talk about, a lot of s**t goin on: murder, death, kill, booze, drugs, tattoos, a lot of violence out there. So, I cant really say what the chemistry, what the formula gonna be because everybody done took from my formula already, like down to the bone. So, we can’t really come back with that old type of formula unless you come with some crazy…come hard and that’s basically how I like to come. I wanna come hard, hard, hardcore with some good hooks with some good beats. Take your time in there and put it together like how we used to do it! That’s all a process and lot of people don’t know what it takes for a nine-man group to make that process happen. ’Cause you got nine ill MCs who feel they should be number one! So, we got to humble ourselves again and get up in there and bake a nice cake.

AllHipHop.com: At this point, how motivated would you say you are to doing a Wu album?

U-God: I’m with it, as soon as n***as give me the red light like it’s real like that. I’m in there like I’m doin’ what I gotta do. Right now, I’m out here working on my s**t, so I ain’t waitin’ for nobody. I’m still doing me at the same time. I’m just trying get some better production goin’ on, get some nice beats some real chunky s**t. I’m out here searching for some diamonds.

AllHipHop.com: What type of sound is it that, when you say you looking for diamonds?

U-God: I can’t explain it to you, bro, it’s just gotta be heavy and big and that’s all I can tell you.

AllHipHop.com: Do you ever think it makes more sense for the Wu-Tang Clan to do an independent album as a group than actually go through a label?

U-God: This independent s**t is way more complicated than what you think. You gotta get in those programs and they gotta be serious business. Personally, I’m getting back into a major. I ain’t playin’, I’m goin back to a major. I’m getting back up on the diving board ’cause that’s where you makin’ money. Ain’t nothing wrong with being on a major. Oh, everybody’s always talkin’ about a major, B, that’s a myth. A major takes care of you, you sell records, you get taken cared of. Your s**t flopped, you don’t get taken care of, it’s business, man. It’s like I was playin’ for the majors and I got wounded or something and now I’m in the minors and s**t, playing independent games. Now, I gotta make my way back into the f**kin’ majors by hittin’ my own best independently. So, now when you get back to the majors you gotta come back with Reggie Jackson numbers, you gotta start hittin’ home runs. That’s what they respect. Make some s**t that make n***a’s hair stand up and there’s no way around that. Look at E-40, E-40 was an independent for awhile too, he couldn’t take it no more. He said I gotta get back to the basics. Gotta get back to the majors and look at a n***a.

Allhiphop: With the way Hip-Hop is right now, coming back as a collective, do you go ahead and come in swinging swords or do you take it in a different direction?

U-God: Right now, I ain’t telling nobody how I’m comin’, man. I just do what I do. Just be surprised, I got s**t up my sleeve. I’’m always doin’ some new s**t. I’m out here right now f**kin’ with dudes. I’m here in L.A., I’m not just doin’ Hip-Hop, I write R&B I do all types of s**t and it’s just who I’m around that could bring the situation now. I can go anywhere and make songs with all type of dudes. Like yesterday, I was with Motor Head and Foo-Fighters just chillin’, drinkin’ and s**t. I’m coming hard and I come out how I wanna come out right now. I’m content with my s**t. I don’t give a f**k if it only sell 3,000 or 4,000 mothaf**kin’ copies. I know 5,000 n***as copped the s**t, cool. I’m basically startin’ all over again, really. We start a solo career; everybody always identifies me with Wu-Tang. Yeah, I’m great with my crew because I already accomplished that, but as far as my solo career, I have not popped off solo. The only thing that’s good about it is I got a toenail in the door. Guess Who's Bizack? Jay-Z Drops New Single In October

Word is Jay-Z is prepping the release of a new single in October and will follow-up with his comeback album on November 14.

Sources at Def Jam Records told SOHH exclusively that Hov's new single, "Show Me What You Got," will be released some time in October. While rumors are that Jiggaman is scheduled to work with video director Hype Williams, the single's video will apparently be directed by F. Gary Gray ("Friday," "The Italian Job").

Rolling Stone Magazine recently reported that the LP would be dropping on November 14. Rumors are also spreading that Jigga's comeback CD will be entitled Presidential Gala. In recent months, producers like the Neptunes, Kanye West, Cool & Dre and the Runners have leaked information about working with Jigga.

The new album will mark Jay's first solo release since 2003's The Black Album. He has since made guest appearances on remixes with Kanye, Rick Ross and Young Jeezy as well as songs with Beyonce, Mary J Blige and Pharrell Williams among others.

Nas Says 'Hip-Hop Is Dead' Could Be His Best Album
By Alexis Jeffries
Date: 9/11/2006 2:21 pm

Nas says his greatest work is ahead of him, but the veteran rapper said his fans will intimately determine if he latest album Hip-Hop Is Dead reigns over his classic albums like Illmatic (1994), It Was Written (1996), God's Son (2002), Stillmatic (2001) and others.

"It's probably the best record I ever did," Nas told AllHipHop.com. "I mean, when you work in the studio for a while, sometimes you think its great, but you don't know what it is until the people hear it. So I hope the people agree."

The Queensbridge, NY rapper signed a joint venture deal with Def Jam/Sony Music in January 2006, ending a long-running feud between he and Def Jam president Jay-Z.

The two rappers engaged in a lyrical feud which exploded with Jay-Z's 2001 diss track "The Takeover." Nas answered with the equally scathing reply, "Ether."

The two men settled their differences in Oct. of 2005, when Jay-Z brought Nas out for a performance during his "I Declare War" concert at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, NJ.

Under terms of the Def Jam/Sony Music union, Nas will produce four albums, with Hip-Hop is Dead being the first release on his own label, the Jones Experience.

The rapper hinted that fans may finally receive the long-awaited collaboration between the lyrical giants.

"I'm just with Def Jam," Nas said. "I haven't worked with anybody but myself. A little bit of work with Jay [Z], just for the fans out there and just for us."

Nas said Hip-Hop is Dead will be available to retail outlets on Nov. 7.

In related news, Jay-Z is expected to release an album of new material later in the year, but Def Jam representatives would not confirm or deny the information

RIP 2PAC 10 YEARS
1996 - 2006

10 years ago today, 2Pac was shot leaving a Mike Tyson fight. Today he is even more famous than when he was alive. His lyrics and bravado has been unmatched in hip hop history. Everyone is a wannabe 2Pac now from The Game to Ja Rule. Shit's never been the same since. :(

Pour out a little liqour for 2Pac.

This week on HiP HoP Hizzy we will have an extra long special dedicated to one of rap's favorite sons.

You like him? Hate him? Etc.

Love Tupac, everytime I see the keebler elf (aka Ja Rule) keep on thinking of a wannabe. The first album I ever heard by myself was "Me Against the World" I had stole it from my moms. Even though I was about I think 10 or 11 at the time, I really couldn't think of the impact he would have not only one me but the rest of the world. He was truly gifted not as a rapper but an actor also. Its rare to have somebody that could pull off both and do it so well.
I still remember where I was when they said he died in the hospital. The only time I really cried for superstar like that. Also I remember me and my friends arguing if it was a stunt or not. How he was suppose to be coming back after 7 years.
