Chapter 11: Training
Two figures stood locked together in the center of the dojo. The only sounds that could be heard were the occasional padding of bear feet on the mats and the cloth of there uniforms being pulled in a rough way. The taller had one hand firmly on the smallers forearm and the other at her shoulder as she attempted to maneuver for the advantage.
The smaller had one hand also on the tallers shoulder, but her other hand flailed helplessly off to the side as it had just been knocked loose and now Miki was staggering backwards trying to avoid the sweeps of Yossuis feet to knock her down. Sweat dripped off of both of them as they had been fighting like this for nearly an hour now with no victor.
Miki managed to bring her arm back to grab the others forearm and the struggle for dominance resumed. The tallers eyes dropped to watch their footwork and Miki seeing the opportunity knocked Yossuis arm off of her shoulder and spun her body into the others at the same time releasing her own hand that had been on Yossuis shoulder.
Now the blonde was trapped as Miki held her other arm strongly with both hands and crouched lower. Yossui closed her eyes bracing herself for impact as she felt her body lifted off the ground by her arm before being thrown quiet roughly over Mikis shoulder to land on her back with a loud thump.
Yossui opened her eyes and looked up at Miki who held a smug expression on her face as she released her grip on the taller girls arm as she took one step back to give her space to stand up.
Koharu came out from her hiding place in the office wearing a matching uniform to the other two girls only with a white belt. Miki looked over at her and just rolled her eyes. She had been such a coward to hide from the two of them; even if they had at one point completely forgotten that they were trying to show the young girl moves and instead it just turned into a full out Judo match.
“You caught me off guard,” Yossui laughed as she sat up. Although the laughter soon turned into a slight coughing fit as she was still breathing heavily. But when she stood completely up it her breath was back and her heart had slowed to a normal rate. The only trace that she had been in a fight less than a minute ago was the faint sweat marks all over her clothes.
Miki stood there with her arms on her hips looking more like she was waiting to fight next than she had been the one fighting.
“That was amazing!” Koharu suddenly shouted causing both of the black belts to look over. The youngest bounded over to them excitedly. “It was like you were moving extra fast, but I could keep up. It was amazing! I don’t think I’ll be able to do it…” she looked down at the floor frowning.
Yossui walked over and planted one hand on top of Koharus black hair causing the girl to look up. She was greeted by a friendly smile. “Trust me, you’ll catch on quick.”
“But you two were moving so fast,” Koharu exclaimed jumping into the air twirling as if trying to prove her point.
Miki scoffed and walked over to join the other two. “Look kid,” she crossed her arms over her chest. “We were moving fast. When you make the deal you also get sort of…super human powers I guess…” She looked at Koharu to make sure she comprehended.
“Like we can fly!?”
Obviously she didn’t get it. Miki sighed, “Not really. It’s more like the neurons in our brain can set off at 1,000mph, which is about 4 or 5 times faster than a regular persons neurons, giving us faster reflexes. And so if you have faster reflexes it just looks like you’re moving faster because you don’t need that extra second to comprehend before moving. Get it?”
The youngest still looked lost but still nodded. It’s not like if Miki explained it again she would get it. All she had to know is that her reflexes were faster.
Too bad Miki tried to explain it again anyway. “It’s like if you see that a car is coming at you: A normal person it would take a moment for them to run out of the way…it’s like a stall. They see the car and then it takes a moment for the neurons to fire off signaling that persons feet to run. We don’t need that extra moment. It’s instantaneous because our neurons fire just that much faster.”
Koharu seemed to get it a little more. But Yossui noticed this was getting nowhere fast so she spoke up. “How about we see if you learned anything from watching that match? Here,” she stuck out her arm with that confident gleam she sometimes got. “Try and flip me.”

“Oh My God Yossui! We’ve been at this training thing for the past five days straight! You’re trying to kill us…” Miki whined as she threw down her katana on the ground giving up the fight.
“She’s still not strong enough,” Yossui retorted sheething her own katana. There was no point in keeping it out if Miki wasn’t going to fight anymore.
“Yea right!” Miki sat down and smirked up at Yossui. “You just want to prove yourself. She managed to flip you and land such a hard blow to your gut that you had to take a fifteen minute break so you could stop coughing.”
The blonde looked away, “She caught me off guard.”
“Even that time I gave you a black eye?” the hyper active trainee piped in, causing a very Fujimoto like glare to appear on Yossuis face as she half drew her katana back out.
“Lucky shot!” She practically screamed.
There was a defining silence around the dojo before Miki and Koharu burst into laughter. Koharu who had been standing by Miki had to plant her katana into the ground and lean against it just so she wouldn’t fall over.
“Fine!” The oldest yelled sitting down on the floor with her arms crossed over her chest. “What do you suggest we do instead of training?” She eyed Miki who stopped laughing and looked up at the ceiling contemplating.
At the same time she felt a little bad for harping at Yossui. Those shots had been not lucky…but actually Yossui let Koharu hit her. Miki could tell; it was just like the blonde to let someone younger and less experienced feel good about herself. Miki would never do something like that.
In fact, Yossui was the only person that Miki could never beat in a sword fight or free for all. She could take her when it was a fight where there were rules and it was one selective martial art…but when it all came down to it Yossui was better.
She was always better; even when they first started training together. Miki fronted that it was because Yossui had been training for longer, but it was apparent that she would never catch up. She would never win and that’s why she got a little carried away verbally abusing the tallest of the three. But still, everyone, even Yossui, had a line of how much they could take at one time.
“Can I just ask some questions?” Miki jumped when Koharu spoke. She had completely forgotten she was supposed to be figuring out what to do next.
Yossui said nothing but looked at Miki to see what she thought. “Uhh yea, that sounds fine. What do you want to know?” They all instinctively moved into a triangle so it was better to hear each other speak. Yossui discarded her katana to some part of the room so it wouldn’t be in the way when she sat.
“Why me?”
The two more experienced exchanged knowing glances. This was never a fun thing to explain. Yossui was the first to speak, “When you are chosen to be an Interfector it’s because a certain aura grows inside of you pegging you to be so hateful towards humans that you feel the least amount of remorse towards them than anyone. It doesn’t mean you are entirely heartless, but it hurts less.” Yossui paused as she saw a sad look growing on Koharus face. In fact, Yossui began to struggle to say her next sentence. Explaining this always brought up memories of the past; of being a human.
Miki sensed this and quickly brought herself to a level she was very accustome with lately; a state of being without emotion. “This happens because when you were alive, and human, your life was what you wouldn’t call glamorous.” Miki spoke in monotone and averted her eyes as both Yossui and Koharu twitched a little. It was obvious that this was causing painful memories to resurface.
“The Interfector aura grows when one has a horrible and abusive life that ends sooner than you were supposed to die. Than God intended,” Miki continued. “I know, sounds odd. How can ones life end before the all mightly being in heaven meant for it too? When one has so much hate in their body it’s like they detach from all things good. That would include God…so your life is now in the hands of the devil.”
“And so even the devil is remorseful and tries to give you a second chance, but with the catch of working for him?” Both Yossui and Miki were surprised when Koharu was able to come up with that conclusion herself.
“Uhmm yea…that’s right. The devil convinces you to serve him for a new life. Most say yes because they have such a complete hatred for people in general.” Miki said smiling. Smiling was the best thing to do when you are trying to avoid painful memories.
She looked over at Yossui who hadn’t spoken in a while and was looking down at the floor, eyes glazed over as she was lost in thoughts about everything from before. It’s too bad we don’t get to forget our past, Miki thought as she watched her friend. In that moment she seemed so vulnerable. So weak; so different.
“But that’s not the only catch,” Yossui suddenly spoke up, not tearing her eyes away from the ground. “It’s also an everlasting life, we cannot die once we choose to come back.”
Koharu looked over at Yossui curious. But what she did not expect was a slow smirk to slowly spread across the blondes face. “You haven’t shown her what it’s like to die yet have you?” Yossui drawled out, looking over a Miki.
“No and I don’t want to,” Miki matched her smirk to Yossuis. “Remember how sick you got?”
Obviously that memory was just as unpleaset as the previous, but for other reasons. Her face turned to a pale green color, before shaking her head and composing herself again. “Yea well, it’s still something you should show her at some point…”
“Wait I’m confused,” Koharu announced from her spot on the floor.
Without looking away from Yossui as they were now having a staring contest to apparently decide who was right, Miki replied very business like. “Interfectors cannot die of old age because we do not physically age. We also cannot kill ourselves. However, we can be killed by others and brought back to life.”
“That sounds fun!”
“Trust me it isn’t,” Yossui now spoke also not breaking her gaze with Miki. “When you die you’re basically drained. It’s like getting up from a very long coma. The more times you die the easier it is to wake up though. The first time you probably won’t even get up for a week or so and then puke multiple times.”
“Trust Yossui,” Miki playfully scoffed at the other girl who stuck out her tongue in response. “Oh very mature.”

The rest of the day went by surprisingly without incident. Probably because Yossui went out to the town to pick up something she wouldn’t tell Miki or Koharu about. And Koharu had got a new assignment back in Japan so she set off to book a flight back leaving Miki to lie outside peacefully basking in the sun.
Well, until the sun went out. Then it was more like lying outside seeing how many mosquitos she could bat away from her before they bit into her skin.
Finally fed up with all the bugs she walked inside to see that Yossui hadn’t come back yet. “She’s been gone all day, what the hell could she be doing?”
Miki wandered around the dojo for a little while, until she noticed something odd coming from the office. The light was on…and Miki hadn’t left the light on when she went outside.
The brunette slowly approached the room ready to attack anyone who might be in there. But when she peered inside there was only a note and under that was a beautiful red silk dress.
She picked up the note that just read, “For Miki.”
“I hope it fits right,” came a nervous voice from behind causing Miki to whirl around in surprise only to be greeted by a very well dressed and suave Yossui. “I thought since you were leaving tomorrow we could go to this nice Italian restraint…”
Yossui was in a feminine suit and had a bouquet of roses tucked under her shoulder. She blushed and looked down at the floor. “You really should say something…I’m nervous enough as it is…”
Miki broke into a wide grin and walked over pulling the taller into a warm embrace. “You look nice,” she commented as she felt Yossui return the hug.
“I can try sometimes right?” she said with a smirk. Miki pulled back a little and stared into the tallers warm eyes. “I care about you and…I love you Miki.”
I love you too Yossui, Miki thought as she leaned in and their lips connected. I really do, but why do things have to be so difficult?

I would reply to comments if I wasn't so tired

So I'll do that with the next chapter...
