Press conferences at Gamescom happened today. Biggest news of all is that the new Tomb Raider will be exclusive to Xbox One. It's difficult to get the semantics down, but the general feeling is that it will be a timed exclusive as the wording is around Holidays 2015. Still, big news and people are pissed about it. Personally I don't see why, all we've seen of it is a CG trailer. And it's a sequel to the TR remake which isn't...ideal. Don't get me wrong, it's a high production, decent playing game, but I definitely had issues with it. The 'tombs', the story and the change in direction to a more action based game than the original TR games were what turned me off. Exclusivity is a two sided coin, for one you're getting a game with a lot of promise as the development isn't fractured if it's multiplatform, meaning developers have more time to work on a single console architecture. On the flip side, if you don't have the console, you're pretty screwed.
But the TR sequel (Rise of the Tomb Raider is a godawful name for the game btw), was shown at E3 as a multiplatform game. So it didn't start off development as an exclusive and literally MS just bought the rights to it. It doesn't really make much business sense either considering that Square Enix said the last game's sales figures of 4m was too low, so how would exclusivity on a less popular console help that? Unless MS literally just guaranteed them a crap ton of money to cover for that?
Also worth mentioning, it is coming out for 360 too, so you don't have to shell out for a new console if you still have that.
