The MNM vs. Hardyz match saved the ECW PPV, although it went downhill from there. The sad thing is that neither MNM or the Hardyz have any affiliation to ECW whatsoever.
The new ECW has been a near total waste, IMO. CM Punk was brought in, got super over with the fans, but hasn't feuded with anybody other than that spazz Mike Knoxx. WTF?!? The goth/vampire guy shows some potential, but he hasn't been built up enough. Other than that, ECW has "built" rejects like Test and that tall Indian guy, who aren't even OVW caliber.
The ECW I remembered from the 90's 3 things that made it special:
1) It was a showcase for solid wrestling matches, the likes of which we weren't seeing in WCW and WWF, and we wouldn't see in WWE until the early 2000's. Since Angle left, who the heck watches ECW for quality matches any more?
2) It invested in building solid new talent, like Benoit, Eddy, Rey, etc. Those guys weren't rejects from some other fed - they were solid talent that needed a push to make it to the top. Who has the new ECW built? Test?!? Knoxx?!? VampBoy?!?
3) It had shocking garbage wrestling. Super Crazy moonsaulting off the bleachers. RVD jumping into the crowd. Barbed wire and Mass Transit. This aspect has now been fully merged into WWE mainstream, and the only garbage remnants that we see in the new ECW are sad things like Sandman busting his own head open week after week.
Let's face it: ECW is dead. What we see today is just sad. If you want 1) and 2), watch ROH and maybe TNA. If you want 3) watch mainstream WWE.
BTW, have you noticed that suddenly Raw is interesting again? They're building up Kenny, pushing Nitro like mad, making Cena funny again, and have reformed the World's Greatest Tag Team!!!!
Frankly, I think that Benajamin stands alone strongly as a singles wrestler, and this tag team is only there to give a push to Hass, who has been struggling in his angle with Viscera (as anybody would). Hass can also be a main eventer if he's pushed right. But he needs good competition and serious exposure. The WGTT is a good way to do that. If only they reused the old Angle "You Suck!" music....
Also, did anybody notice the impending breakup of the London/Kendrick tag-team. That's a damn shame. I had hoped they would last another year together. But both of them are so over now that they just might warrant a run as singles wrestlers.
