K, a few updates.

First, there was no press conference today announcing that the deal has been done. Apparently there are still some financial issues that need to be rectified, but that haven't yet been done because the banks here were closed due to the stat holiday.

Looks like we'll get Thrashers, but no announcement today
By: Gary Lawless

Winnipeggers have been patient for 15 years and it looks like they'll need to hang tight for at least a few more days -- perhaps as long as a week.
Despite published reports, hints from Premier Greg Selinger and constant rumours, there will be no press conference today regarding the potential return of the National Hockey League to Winnipeg.
True North Sports and Entertainment spokesman Scott Brown told the Free Press on Monday afternoon there would be no press conference today.
True North is in negotiations to purchase the Atlanta Thrashers and relocate the hockey team to Winnipeg.
Talks continue to move forward but no deal has been finalized, making a press conference unnecessary at this point.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly added his own confirmation. "It's safe to say there will be no announcement on Tuesday," he said

Second, if/when the announcement is made that the Thrashers are coming to Peg Sheety, evidently there are already plans in place to relocate the Moose...to St. John's, NFLD.

Moose to relocate to St. Johns NFLD if Thrashers move to Winnipeg
CJOB News Team reporting
5/21/2011

The Telegram in St. Johns, NFLD, is reporting that the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey league will relocate to St. John's next season as part of the Atlanta thrashers relocation to Winnipeg.
And Robin Short of the Telegram says an official announcement of the return of the AHL to Newfoundland will be made next Friday.

The relocation of the Moose to St. John's is contingent upon True North Sports and Entertainment finalizing an agreement to buy the Thrashers and move them to Winnipeg.

As of now, True North and the NHL insist that the purchase of the Thrashers by True North has not been finalized

AHL return waiting on first ’Peg
Published on May 24, 2011
Robin Short  - Telegram Sports Editor

Danny Williams has been working “very hard” on getting an American Hockey League team for St. John’s, and acknowledges the city is “very close” to landing the Manitoba Moose, but cautions there are no deals in place.
However, The Telegram, as reported Saturday (click here for Saturday's story), has learned an  agreement involving the transfer of the Moose to St. John’s for the 2011-12 AHL season is done, but won’t be announced until the imminent NHL transfer of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg is complete.
Initial reports last week indicated a news conference is planned for today in Winnipeg. That time frame is now unlikely, meaning a more likely scenario for an announcement on the sale of the Thrashers to True North Sports and Entertainment will be Wednesday or perhaps later.
A news conference outlining the transfer of the Moose is planned for Friday in St. John’s, but given the delay in Winnipeg, the St. John’s announcement could be pushed back to next week.

If it's true, then at least it's comforting to know that the Moose will be going to a city that will welcome them. St. John's has been craving for the return of a professional hockey team ever since the St. John's Maple Leafs were taken away from them.  For anyone not aware, St. John's didn't have a problem with a lack support for the team from the fans while they were there. The franchise was loved and financially was doing quite good. The team was simply moved because the Toronto Maple Leafs (their NHL affiliate/parent club) wanted to move the team "closer to home" done mostly to reduce travel costs and get rid of other misc. expenses that they incurred by having a farm team in another city.

True North expected to announce purchase of Thrashers at news conference

By: Gary Lawless and Tim Campbell

Posted: 05/31/2011 6:44 AM | Comments: 0 | Last Modified: 05/31/2011 7:48 AM

True North Sports and Entertainment has called an 11 a.m. press conference to announce it has purchased the Atlanta Thrashers subject to NHL board of governors' approval.

The Free Press learned early this morning that a deal had not been finalized but that there was enough confidence among the parties involved, True North, the NHL and Atlanta Spirit Group, to call a press conference.

Lawyers worked all night and will continue to in order to complete the transaction prior to an announcement.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and True North partner David Thomson are en route to Winnipeg for the announcement.

The league and its owners will have two matters on which to vote, now likely on June 21 in New York. They will be asked to allow True North to relocate the franchise to Winnipeg's MTS Centre and to confirm True North as the franchise's new owners.

When True North makes its news public today, it's expected to announce an immediate ticket-selling campaign that will be designed to give the NHL a confident picture of the Winnipeg market, which has been without NHL hockey since 1996.

The City of Winnipeg has no plans to close down Portage & Main, due to concerns about emergency access to hospitals.

Fans are encouraged to attend the celebration at The Forks, where announcements will follow the NHL announcement at 11 a.m., city events manager Kenny Boyce said.

The Winnipeg Jets, who played at the since-demolished Winnipeg Arena, joined the NHL in 1979 after seven successful years in the WHA.

Their history in the NHL was hit-and-miss and after some serious money-losing years and the desire of city and provincial governments to get out from under the losses they had agreed to cover after 1991, the team was sold in 1995 to American businessmen Richard Burke and Steven Gluckstern and moved to Phoenix in 1996.

True North has been negotiating with the Atlanta Spirit Group on the Thrashers franchise purchase since early May.

The Free Press is following this story and will supply more details as they become available.

And Scott Taylor, always see him on the TV and radio, great article:

Quote
The NHL Returns to Winnipeg.
Posted on May 31, 2011 by Scott Taylor

I spent lunch hour at the Forks yesterday and it was invigorating. Hundreds of people converged on Winnipeg’s meeting place to celebrate the return of the NHL to Winnipeg.

Perhaps I should make that a little clearer: “Return of the Jets.” Some kids who were barely out of diapers when the Jets played their last game in 1996 were sporting Jets jerseys at the Forks yesterday. Although it’s likely this team will not be the Jets — we’ve heard Manitoba Somethings, maybe Falcons or Polar Bears –it’s pretty definite now that 75-80 per cent of Winnipeg hockey fans WANT the team be the Winnipeg Jets.

But yesterday, the name argument took a back seat to the simple realization that the National Hockey League would once again have Winnipeg as a member.

Mark Chipman, David Thomson, Jim Ludlow and, yes, Gary Bettman (looking like a guy who just got punched him the stomach) made it official. The National Hockey League has indeed, returned to Winnipeg.

At a news conference yesterday at the MTS Centre, True North Sports and Entertainment announced that it had completed a deal to purchase the Atlanta Thrashers and the team would begin play this fall at Winnipeg’s downtown arena. Through it all you got the feeling Bettman did NOT want this to happen. His Southern U.S. experiment has started to crumble and his body language suggested he was pained by the fact he had to move a team out of the seventh-largest TV market in the United States and into a city of 700,000 on the Canadian prairie.

There was some talk that if Winnipeg’s owners didn’t sell 13,000 season tickets by June 21, there was a chance the NHL’s board of governors would not allow the team to move to Winnipeg, but that just seemed outrageous. Yesterday, Chipman said that True North had signed off on a deal to purchase the team from the Atlanta Spirit Group and while Winnipeggers were partying at the Forks, the rich guys who own ASG were doing cartwheels in their executive offices, having dumped the Thrashers, a team that has allegedly lost $130 million in five years. One suspects those guys aren’t about to take the team back so if True North doesn’t sell 13,000 season tickets, what’s the NHL going to do? Move the team to Portage? Winnipeg is the ONLY alternative to Atlanta and I’m sure that with the use of some brilliant legal term there was a “no give-backsies clause” in the final sales contract.

Meanwhile, it appears Moose GM Craig Heisinger will play an important role with Winnipeg’s new franchise and last night Atlanta’s president Don Waddell said he would not accompany the team to Winnipeg. Head coach Craig Ramsey was in Winnipeg yesterday and will likely keep his job.

And just to make everyone happy, Bettman said yesterday, if the new owners decide they want to use the Jets name, the NHL will give it to them.

The NHL is coming back to the ‘Peg. Just as we wrote last year, it was the Atlanta Thrashers, not the Phoenix Coyotes who wound up moving to River City.

It made for a very nice day. Of course, so did getting my picture taken with Ab McDonald, Bill Lesuk and Thomas Steen.

link: http://www.rivercitysportsblog.com/the-nhl-returns-to-winnipeg/

haha GJ!!

even John Cena got in on it!

It's all about $$$$$ and fucking Bettman got it.  Bravo to Tru North for GETTING DA PLAN, NEVER GIVING UP. Just laying out the ticket packages, wow. Oilers is still the cheapest!

lol fuck, man, come to think this is like the 2nd time a franchise left Atlanta lol. Throw the Preds outta the West, fucking Cheechoo and Rinne always have da Oilers number lol

We gotta do a roadie like Toronto, Ottawa HiPstaz -> Winnipeg -> Edmonton -> Calgary -> Vancouver  or vice versa

So yeah, I was all kidney stoned up again today, but I guess I know I'll never forget where I was when the NHL came back. I remember being at that last game, and knowing that the last goal scored against us was an empty netter by Keith Primeau with seconds to go, ending in 4-1. This time, I was in the waiting room at the Health Sciences Centre and I was there for over 8 hours. Man, Brock Lesnar sure was right about our health care system, the wait can fuckin' kill you.

But what to do about the Moose? What do you say, Winnipeg Cat?

LOL, Tom_Green and I are already talking about getting tix to the first home game.

He and I did end up going to check out the festivities last night. HOLY FUCK it was windy. Will try to get some additional pics and videos posted up here soon.

They've actually made the new ticket prices more affordable than I thought they would for "NHL caliber" games. Now it's up to the people here to put their money where their mouths are, and actually pony up the money to actually SHOW everyone that, not only does Winnipeg WANT an NHL team, but that Winnipeg WILL support them by buying tickets and attending games.

Oilers forward Gilbert Brule picks up unlikely hitchhiker -- U2's Bono
By: The Canadian Press
Posted: 06/2/2011 12:25 PM

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oilers have a new celebrity fan.
Oilers centre Gilbert Brule and his girlfriend were driving in West Vancouver, B.C., on Tuesday when the happened upon an unusual hitchhiker — U2 frontman Bono.
"I like people who play ice hockey, they stop for hitchhikers, I know this from experience," Bono told the crowd at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium for U2's concert Wednesday night.
"I was hitchhiking in Vancouver yesterday, actually I was! And this guy and his girlfriend picked me up. He was cool, an ice hockey player, his name was Gilbert Brule as it happens, I'm so grateful I've decided I want to be Gilbert Brule."
With hockey on his mind, Bono compared his bandmates to former Oiler greats, calling The Edge, "The Wayne Gretzky of U2."

Well, I don't know if there was a time when I've been more glad to have been proven wrong. I've always said that the biggest hurdle keeping Peg Sheety from getting an NHL team back here was the fact that the people here are notoriously/infamously cheap, and that at today's NHL prices, it would be a really tough sell to get Winnipeggers to willingly commit to buy season tickets. Well, like I said, the people here have proven me wrong, and I'm totally fine with that.
