Goodell reviewing Burress incidents

By Chris Mortensen
ESPN.com

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Friday notified Plaxico Burress that his office is initiating a review of incidents involving Burress under the personal conduct policy, league spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed.

Burress, who shot himself in the thigh Nov. 29 in a Manhattan nightclub, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and faces up to 3½ years in prison.

He made a brief appearance in court Monday, where Judge Felicia Mennin adjourned the case until Sept. 23, enabling the former Giants receiver to continue negotiations with several NFL teams in hopes of returning to the field in 2009.

Goodell had been waiting for the legal process to be complete, but as it is delayed with no clear indication of when it will be concluded, the commissioner decided to take the initiative, league sources said.

The NFL's vice president of labor and law policy, Adolpho Birch, notified Burress of the commissioner's review on Friday.

The Giants signed Burress to a five-year, $35 million contract extension in September. The team later withheld $1 million after the shooting and the NFL Players Association filed a grievance on Burress' behalf. A special master ruled the Giants had to pay Burress because the money was a signing bonus he earned upon agreeing to the contract extension and could not be withheld for future conduct.

Burress has 505 career receptions for 7,845 yards and 55 touchdowns in nine seasons with the Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Supreme Court to hear antitrust case

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court agreed Monday to decide whether the National Football League and its 32 teams can enter an exclusive licensing deal with a maker of team jerseys and other gear without violating federal antitrust law.

The court said it will hear an appeal from American Needle Inc., of Buffalo Grove, Ill., that challenges an agreement the NFL struck with Reebok International Ltd. American Needle had been one of many firms that manufactured NFL headwear until the league granted an exclusive contract to Reebok in 2001.

The NFL won the case in the federal appeals court in Chicago. But it also asked the Supreme Court to hear the case in a quest for a more sweeping decision that could put an end to what the league considers costly, frivolous antitrust lawsuits.

The case concerns whether the league is essentially a "single entity" that can act collectively or 32 distinct businesses that must be careful about running afoul of antitrust laws by working too closely together.

Other than Major League Baseball, which has an antitrust exemption dating to 1922, the other sports leagues have an intense interest in the case. The National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League both asked the court to rule in favor of the NFL.

The case will be argued late this year or early in 2010.

The case is American Needle v. National Football League, 08-661.

Peterson would welcome Favre, trusts Childress with decision

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson would welcome Brett Favre to Minnesota with open arms if the quarterback decides to come out of retirement for the second straight year and sign with the Vikings.

Peterson said Friday that he grew up watching Favre and admires his passion for the game. But he said it's up to coach Brad Childress on whether to pursue Favre or stick with Sage Rosenfels or Tarvaris Jackson as the Vikings quarterback.

Peterson said he thinks Childress will do whatever gives Minnesota the "best team possible to win games."

At least for a few days, Peterson was the featured quarterback. He spent time dropping back for passes and avoiding blitzers during his football camp for about 400 kids on his former college campus at Oklahoma.

Jags deal Northcutt for Alexander

Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded receiver Dennis Northcutt to the Detroit Lions for safety Gerald Alexander.

The deal was finalized Tuesday after both players passed physicals.

Northcutt gives the Lions a veteran receiver opposite rising star Calvin Johnson.

Alexander, a second-round pick in 2007, gives Jacksonville depth in the secondary. He started 16 games as a rookie, but missed most of last year following a neck injury.

Northcutt, who has 364 receptions for 4,584 yards and 17 touchdowns, has been projected to start this season. But Jacksonville's three rookie receivers were impressive enough during offseason drills that Northcutt became expendable.

Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair and a woman were found shot to death Saturday afternoon inside a condominium in downtown Nashville, police said.

Police spokesman Don Aaron said authorities were still investigating the shootings and that no suspects were in custody.

"I don't have any answers for you now as to what's happened, who's responsible," Aaron said.

Aaron said the 36-year-old McNair died of a gunshot wound to the head. He said police tentatively identified the woman, but did not release her name.

"There are persons who were around the complex today, visitors, who have been taken to headquarters for questioning, just to see what they know, what they may have seen," he said.

Aaron said officers went to the scene after receiving a call about injured persons inside the condo.

"When police officers arrived in response to that call, they found two individuals who had been shot to death inside the residence," he said.

The condominium is one that McNair was known to frequent, but police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said she didn't know if he was the owner.

McNair played 13 seasons in the NFL and led the Titans within a yard of forcing overtime in the 2000 Super Bowl, which they lost 23-16 to the St. Louis Rams. He also played for the Baltimore Ravens before retiring in April 2008.
We don't know the details, but it is a terrible tragedy and our hearts go out to the families involved," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

"We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today," Titans owner Bud Adams said in a statement. "He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl."

About 50 people crowded just beyond police tape outside the complex in the upscale Rutledge Hill neighborhood, some wearing Titans hats. The condominium is located within walking distance of an area filled with restaurants and nightspots, a few blocks from the Cumberland River and within view of the Titans' stadium.

McNair began his career in 1995 with the Houston Oilers, who eventually became the Titans, and finished with 31,304 yards passing and 174 touchdowns. McNair played with pain for several years, and the injuries ultimately forced him to retire.

McNair's most noted drive was the final one of the 2000 Super Bowl. He drove the Titans 87 yards in the final minute, 48 seconds, only to come up a yard short of the tying touchdown. Kevin Dyson caught his 9-yard pass, but was tackled at the 1-yard line by the Rams' Mike Jones.

McNair accounted for all of Tennessee's yards in that drive, throwing for 48 yards and rushing for 14. The rest of the yardage came on penalties against the Rams. Before that, he brought the Titans back from a 16-0 deficit to tie the game.

"The people who didn't know Steve McNair before will know him now," Tennessee tight end Frank Wycheck said after the game. "Did you see that desire? Did you see that heart?"

During a five-game stretch at the end of the 2002 season, McNair was so bruised he couldn't practice. But he started all five games and won them, leading the Titans to an 11-5 finish and a berth in the AFC championship game for the second time in four seasons.

McNair played all 16 games in 2006, his first season in Baltimore, and guided the Ravens to a 13-3 record. But he injured his groin during the season opener last season and never regained the form that enabled him to earn a berth in four Pro Bowls.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of today's tragic news regarding the death of Steve McNair. He was a player who I admired a great deal," said New England Patriots senior football adviser Floyd Reese, who was GM of the Titans when McNair played there. "He was a tremendous leader and an absolute warrior. He felt like it was his responsibility to lead by working hard every day, no matter what.

"I don't think there was a player who played with him or against him that didn't look up to him and respect him," Reese said. "My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, his friends and the many teammates who loved and admired him."

Titans coach Jeff Fisher was out of the country, taking part in the first NFL-USO coaches tour to Iraq.

Ellis: Ware helped me out

ESPN.com news services

According to former Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis, DeMarcus Ware played hide-and-seek with the Dallas coaching staff during games last season to help Ellis get more playing time.

Ellis, who was vocal about his displeasure with his diminished role with the Cowboys last season, said on ESPN 103.3's "Michael Irvin Show" Wednesday that former teammate Ware shared his frustration to the point that Ware would hide from coaches during games so Ellis could play.

"It's a disgrace when DeMarcus Ware comes off the field just so I can get in the game and when the coaches tell him to come on the field, he tries to hide so I can play," Ellis said on Irvin's show. "And you're telling me we're trying to win the Super Bowl?"

Ellis, who had played all of his 11 NFL seasons in Dallas, was released this offseason and subsequently signed with the Oakland Raiders.

Ware, who has one season remaining on his rookie contract, earned his third straight Pro Bowl nod in 2008 thanks to a 20-sack season.

During the interview Wednesday, Irvin asked Ellis to clarify his statement that Ware would take himself out of games.

"On his own. He would say, 'G, come on.' And I would tell him, 'No, DeMarcus, go ahead, man. You're coming up on your contract year. Don't mess that stuff up. Go ahead and do you, and we're just going to do what the coaches, or whoever the powers that be, what they want to do.' "

Ware was asked to react to Ellis' comments on Sirius Radio's "Opening Drive" show Thursday. He didn't dispute Ellis' claims but defended his effort for the Cowboys last season.

"You know, on the concept of hydration, I think I was probably going off the field maybe to get hydrated," he said -- and then laughed. "But I think that everybody at the end of the day got ample amount of time and I went back and looked at a lot of the things, and I, what, played in like 95 percent of the plays? And, you know, maybe sometimes guys rush better against certain guys, so I don't know. I don't know what the deal is, but at the end of the day, I did what I can do to help the team out last year."

Report: Trainer looks in on Favre again

ESPN.com news services

For the second time in four weeks, the trainer for the Minnesota Vikings traveled to Mississippi to assess the physical condition of quarterback Brett Favre.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Eric Sugarman was in Hattiesburg on Wednesday to check on Favre. The report did not indicate the condition of the surgically repaired biceps tendon in Favre's throwing arm.

Sugarman visited with Favre in June to discuss exercises Favre could do to improve shoulder strength following the arthroscopic surgery he had at the end of May.

In an interview with HBO in mid-June, Favre said he was considering a return to the NFL if his throwing arm will allow it and that the Vikings are the only team he has spoken to about a comeback.

Rice: Favre could backfire on Vikings

Jerry Rice said he applauds Brett Favre's desire to continue to play, but he questioned whether it is the best move for the Vikings, saying "this could really backfire." "You have two quarterbacks [Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels] who don't know exactly what is going to happen. All of a sudden these two guys thought they were going to be competing. To be honest with you, I thought Tarvaris would be the starting guy this year. I've watched him off and on. The most important thing for him is the consistency. He shows that at times 'OK, I can do this.' I think he was moving in the right direction, making progress. Now you have this saga, and everybody is sitting back wondering what is going to happen."

Brinkley stable after shooting

ESPN.com news services

CHELTENHAM, Pa. -- San Diego Chargers rookie running back Curtis Brinkley was hospitalized in stable condition Friday after being shot at a suburban Philadelphia intersection, authorities said.

Brinkley, 23, was shot multiple times early Friday morning as his car was stopped at an intersection in Cheltenham, police said. Investigators are looking for a gunman who fled the scene in a car. They did not have a motive.

Brinkley was able to drive himself a short distance, then was taken to a hospital by a police officer who responded to the shooting, according to Cheltenham Township police.

He was listed in stable condition at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, hospital spokesman Rodney Yancey said.

In a statement, the Chargers wished Brinkley a speedy recovery but said they would have no further comment while the shooting was under investigation.

It is the third time in six years a Chargers player has been shot. In September 2006, linebacker Steve Foley was shot three times by an off-duty police officer in Coronado, Calif., who suspected him of driving drunk. The injury ended his career.

In July 2003, rookie safety Terrence Kiel was shot during an attempted carjacking in Houston. Four years later, he pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping prescription cough syrup to Texas. He was released by the team after his plea and died in a car crash in July 2008.

Brinkley signed with the Chargers as a rookie free agent following this year's draft. As a senior at Syracuse last season, he rushed for 1,164 yards and seven touchdowns.

A native of Philadelphia, Brinkley was a prolific running back at West Catholic High School. He set city high school records with 7,429 career rushing yards and 85 touchdowns.

In a statement, Syracuse coach Doug Marrone extended the program's thoughts and prayers to Brinkley and his family, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Smith trying to avoid lockout

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- As NFL owners and players resume talks on a new collective bargaining agreement, the new union chief and 20 current and retired players plan to meet with members of Congress Wednesday in hopes of building political support to head off a lockout.

In an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday, the union head, DeMaurice Smith, said the group will remind lawmakers about the "gifts" Congress bestows on the league, such as an antitrust exemption for broadcasting contracts.

It may be hard to conjure up much sympathy for players making seven-figure salaries. But Smith noted that thousands of people work as stadium workers. "And I'm not sure in an economic downturn whether a business that generated $8 billion in revenue last year should be contemplating" throwing those people out of work during a lockout, he said -- adding that lawmakers should think about the consequences to their home cities.

The union and league held a negotiating session in Washington Tuesday.

Other sports leagues support NFL

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- U.S. Olympic officials, Major League Baseball and other professional sports organizations are getting into the NFL's fight with two Minnesota Vikings linemen who face four-game suspensions for violating the league's anti-doping policy.

MLB, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League asked Monday for permission to file paperwork in federal court in support of the NFL, which wants to suspend the players at the beginning of the upcoming season. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency filed a similar motion on its own.

Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, who are not related, have never been accused of taking steroids. The two defensive linemen tested positive last summer for a banned diuretic, bumetanide, that can mask the presence of steroids. They took the weight-loss supplement StarCaps, which contained the diuretic but wasn't listed on the label.

Ravens take wait-and-see approach

By James Walker
ESPN.com

Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh said in a conference call Wednesday that he plans to meet with top receiver Derrick Mason soon.

The subject undoubtedly will revolve around Mason's sudden retirement earlier this week, and whether there's a chance he will change his mind before the start of the 2009 season.

The Ravens were caught off guard Monday when Mason, who led the team in receptions and yards in 2008, told jocklife.com that he was calling it quits after 12 seasons. Mason had been rehabbing his shoulder this offseason and was in Baltimore as recently as Monday.

Mason cited the passing of longtime friend and former teammate Steve McNair as a major reason he is leaving the game and recently told ESPN that he is "99 percent" sure of his decision. Baltimore is still taking a wait-and-see approach until Mason meets with team officials and files the official paperwork.

"We have an appointment to talk real soon, either by phone or when I get back next week," Harbaugh said. "So it will be interesting to see where he is at with everything. I know he's going through a lot in the last couple weeks with Steve's situation and those kinds of things. But I'm looking forward to talking to him."

The Ravens have been in the process of examining what's available in the free-agent market at receiver. Veterans such as Marvin Harrison, Matt Jones and Amani Toomer are some of the established names still looking for work.

Right now the Ravens are thin at the position, as Mark Clayton is one of the few receivers with starting experience on the roster. Baltimore is hoping to get the issue resolved before the team opens training camp on July 28.

"Whatever he does, I stand behind him 100 percent," said Ravens defensive end/linebacker Terrell Suggs, who signed a six-year, $63 million extension Wednesday. "I would love to have him for another year, but only Derrick Mason knows what's good for him."

McNair's wife to oversee estate

Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The widow of slain former NFL quarterback Steve McNair says in court documents that her husband left no will and a judge in Nashville has ruled that she will oversee his estate.

Davidson County Probate Judge Randy Kennedy granted Mechelle McNair's request to administer the estate and gave her 60 days to file an inventory of her late husband's assets. She says in court documents that she did not know her late husband's worth, but documents contend it is "of sufficient size to be administered."

Police say McNair was shot to death on July 4 by a girlfriend who later turned the gun on herself. Nashville police have ruled it a murder-suicide.

Mechelle McNair listed herself and her two sons, Tyler and Trenton McNair, as the heirs to the estate. McNair also has two other sons from a previous relationship.
