Uninterested brown eyes watched as the red ball bounced back and forth from the children playing. Her hand moved with grace across the sketchpad in her lap, strokes here, strokes there, a little bit of shading, outlining and finally, erasing the rough sketch.
“A ball? That’s it?”
Her hand froze in place.
“
A ball, Mayu. Really, now.”
Mayu ripped the page off and turned to glare at the other girl. “Nacchan, you’re hovering. How can I draw something properly if you’re hovering, hm?”
“I wouldn’t hover if you are actually getting something done, Mayu.” Nacchan, Hirajima Natsumi, bit back with her own glare. “You barely have a month to complete your piece for the exhibit. All year long, all you did was to draw, sketch and paint. I can’t understand why you still don’t have a piece to enter!”
“Geez, Nacchan. Relax, why don’t you?” Mayu mumbled despite her own worries. Nacchan was right after all, she still doesn’t have a piece she can enter in the exhibit-slash-auction in a month.
“How can I relax, Mayu? This is the annual art exhibit-slash-auction we are talking about. You can’t just lose, you know that, right?” The hotheaded girl asked in exasperation but all she got was a nod. She sighed, “You have tons of pieces lying around in your apartment. They’re all beautiful, why don’t you just pick one from them?”
As shake of the head. “No, I don’t like those. They lack something.” Mayu locked eyes with Nacchan and smiled softly. “I just need to find my inspiration again, Nacchan. Stop worrying too much, alright? I’ll make the deadline, okay? I promise.”
Nacchan stared at the girl in pigtails, contemplating her next move but she knew all too well that there’s nothing else she can do. “Just. . . Find your inspiration fast, Watanabe Mayu.” She chided as she spun on her heel and started walking away. “And I don’t want you entering a ball or any ugly thing like that, either.”
“Roger, Natsumi-sama.” Mayu answered with a happy smile. She stretched her arms above her head and let out a blissful smile. “Peace and quiet at last!”
“Don’t run, Miichan!”
Mayu turned her attention to the playground of the park where the voice came from and saw the red ball rolling towards her followed by a running small kid. She placed her sketchpad down on the bench, stood up before crouching down and getting the ball.
“Ah, Miichan!”
The alarmed voice caught her attention and Mayu looked up just in time to see the small girl a few feet away from her falling forwards. She quickly dropped the ball and reached for the kid’s hand, “Gotcha!” She pulled the kid forward and wrapped her other arm around the kid as she fell on her butt.
Mayu hissed at the pain. “O-Ouch. . .”
“Miichan, I told you not to run!”
Mayu felt the small girl climb off of her.
“Oh my, are you alright?”
Mayu looked up at the owner of the voice and was met with worried eyes. “Y-yeah. . .” Mayu answered, slightly taken aback by the concern clouding the brown eyes. “I-I’m fine.”
A hand was offered to her and Mayu took it as she pushed herself up and started dusting off her shorts.
“Miichan, apologize to her.” The tall girl ordered the kid, gesturing towards Mayu. “And say thank you.”
“I’m sorry, onee-chan.” The small kid, Miichan, bowed to Mayu. “And thank you, onee-chan!”
Mayu just smiled, muttering a small ‘You’re welcome’ before the kid sprinted away again.
“Be careful, Miichan!” The tall girl shouted after Miichan who was already back with the other kids. She turned to Mayu and smiled apologetically. “I’m really sorry about that. And thank you, too.”
“I-Its fine.” Mayu stuttered in response as she took in the look of the girl standing in front of her. She was tall, several inches taller than Mayu. Her skin looked really smooth, her eyes were big, her hair jet black. The girl standing before Mayu was beautiful. Really beautiful.
“Well, I’ll be going then.” The tall girl gave a small bow before walking away.
Mayu watched the girl walk away, long hair swaying along with the wind and the white skirt she was wearing fluttering behind her with grace. “Just like a princess.” Mayu whispered to herself before sitting back on her bench, eyes still on the other girl.
Mayu watched for a few seconds more before reaching for her sketchpad and her pencil. Her hand started dancing along with her pencil as she alternated her eyes from her rough sketching to her subject. She finished just in time to see the tall girl hold Miichan’s hand. Mayu’s eyes followed the girl’s retreating form as she walked out of the park.
Mayu glanced at her sketch and smiled to herself before scribbling on the bottom of it.
Hime-sama.-
“It’s you.”
Mayu looked up from her sketch pad. “Ah, hime-sama.”
The tall girl’s face turned red. “Hime-sama?”
Mayu grinned. “Is there anything I can do for you, your highness?” she asked playfully.
“Nothing much, I just recognized you from before and thought maybe I could come over.” The girl answered, an amused smile playing on her lips. “I’m not a princess though. Must be disappointing to you.”
“Mhm, not really. You still look like one to me.” Mayu closed her sketchpad and scooted over. “Why don’t you take a seat, hime-sama?”
The girl let out a giggle and sat beside Mayu. “You draw?”
Mayu shrugged. “A bit. Where’s your sister?” The girl looked at her in confusion. “You know, the little girl from before?”
“Oh, Miichan. She’s not my sister. I was just babysitting her. Something I do when there’s nothing to do around.”
“Oh. How about today, no babysitting?”
The girl shook her head. “No, so do you mind if I join you here for a while?” The girl asked with a small smile. “There’s nothing to do today.”
“It would be an honor, hime-sama.”
“It’s Yuki, actually. Kashiwagi Yuki.”
Mayu smiled, the hime-sama looked a bit prettier now that she has a beautiful name to match with the beautiful face.
“Nice to meet you, Yuki hime-sama. It’s Watanabe Mayu.”
They talked for hours. About the kids Yuki babysits, about the town, about how there is never much people in the park, about Mayu’s sketchpad, which she expertly avoided talking about. And Mayu learned that there’s more to the princess than just a pretty face. There’s a pretty personality too.
“I gotta go now though, hime-sama.” Mayu smiled in regret, wanting to talk with Yuki longer but Nacchan has been sending her mail like crazy for two hours now.
“Oh, right. Sorry if I kept you.” Yuki smiled apologetically to which Mayu shook her head.
“Not at all. I had a lot of fun talking to you.” Mayu grinned at the other girl and picked up her sketchpad. “Goodbye then, Yuki hime-sama.”
“Bye, Mayu.”
Mayu waved and started walking away, typing a reply to Nacchan’s new mail with one hand.
“Mayu, wait!”
Mayu stopped in her tracks and turned around to look at Yuki.
Yuki blushed and looked at the ground for a moment before slowly lifting her eyes and meeting Mayu’s curious ones. “Tomorrow. . . Will I see you again tomorrow?”
A smile planted itself on Mayu’s face as she answered. “If it’s your lucky day, then maybe you will.”
Mayu winked at the now smiling girl before giving a final wave and walking away.
