Yuri Case No 1: Love Under the Sakura Tree Part 6Itano’s POV
This is it, the very day I’m dreading for. The day where I’ll probably hand Tomomi to the witch without her knowing. I was really hoping she would refuse the mixer’s invitation but she said yes, to which completely and my utter dismay. And so here we are, in an all girl mixer. Just what the heck is this? And why is it Atsuko and Miichan are here too?
I glared at Oshima Yuko’s direction, which by the way was pretty busy impressing her Nya-Nyan. That perverted squirrel failed to mention to me that two of my bestfriends are attending this mixer as well. Wait, make that three.
Across the table my other bestfriend sat. Beside her was Shinoda Mariko, the school’s fashion queen. But she would deny it bashfully, saying I’m more fashionable than her. What can I say, I may have no money to buy expensive clothes but I certainly know how to dress in style. Well anyway, they were talking animatedly, while Sato Yukari, Mariko’s buddy would playfully feed Takamina with fries. Ignoring the others, meaning us. Including Atsuko who was sitting beside me, which by the way was glowering at the trio’s direction. I’m just glad she wasn’t acting bitchy when she sometimes joined Tomomi and I at the library to study. Though I can still feel Atsuko wasn’t totally okay with me hanging out with her.
And speaking of that girl…
A glare of my own was directed at where Tomomi was sitting. In between Mariko and that witch who arranged this blasted mixer, Ohori Megumi. The well-known predator that went around the campus to satiate her hunger with young university girls.
A growl rumbled my chest as I inconspicuously observed them at the corner of my eyes. The witch was having the time of her life as she chatted with Tomomi. Letting out a laugh now and then, touching her subtlety. And sometimes learning forward to her while playing with her long wavy hair. Now who said mixers are fun? Because I’m definitely not enjoying right now.
I gritted my teeth when I saw the witch touch Tomomi again.
“If mixers are always like this, I totally won’t mind even if no one was paying attention to me.”
I glanced at my other bestfriend, Miichan, who was busy stuffing her mouth with food after food. She’s right. With all these foods the witch ordered, a commoner like me should be feasting with it in delight. Wasn’t it food the reason why I’m here in the first place? Throwing another glance at Tomomi, I decided to make this mixer worthwhile as I joined Miichan with her and my favorite hobby, which is to eat the food within our reach in our hearts content. Might as well enjoy the evening with food than being all 'jealous' to that witch.
Minutes passed and my unannounced food eating match with Miichan ended with a coughing fit, courtesy by yours truly. I was immersed with my thoughts while eating that when it finally sunk in what I was thinking it caught me off guard. I-I was jealous?
“You shouldn’t eat fast, look what happened.” Atsuko said, handing me a glass of water. I smiled apologetically at her.
“You alright, Tomochin?” Tomomi asked. I blinked. It seems she was about to bolt out on her seat.
“I’m fine.” I replied, waving my hand off to show I was fine. I felt so stupid. I looked down at the table to hide my flush face when I remembered what made me choke on my own food. I’m jealous…
“AH! Where did all the food go? And more importantly, what will I feed my Nyan-Nyan now?” Yuko screeched dramatically, throwing an accusing glare at Miichan, who only grin widely at her.
“Yuuchan…” Haruna painfully smiled while grabbing her girlfriend’s sleeve.
“It’s like a whirlwind had pass through here.” Yukarin commented, pointing at the empty plates.
“More like a glutton-Gachapin runs amok and devoured all the food when we’re not looking.” Mariko said in a bored tone after seeping on her drink. Though her eyes said otherwise as it was like a sharp dagger flying straight towards Miichan’s way.
“Ne Tomochin, did you hear something? Because I didn’t hear anything AT ALL.”
Miichan turns to me, a devious smile planted on her face. I smiled back, whilst a hesitant one. When she received no reply from me she picks up a yakitori, and stuffed it inside her mouth without hesitation. She then turn towards Mariko’s direction while chewing the food loudly, mocking the woman.
“Ugh…disgusting.” The said woman spat, but Miichan only continued to mock her. Grinning triumphantly when Mariko punch the unsuspecting Takamina instead.
“Don’t worry, we can order again. It’s on me so go ahead.” The witch intervened which prompted Miichan to yell a ‘Yosha!’, a happy Yuko who started ordering like a madwoman, a grumbling Takamina while rubbing her arm and-…
“How about you Tomomi-chan? Do you want something? Because if you ask me, I-only -want-chu.” –a blonde me to scoff at the witch who deliberately and shamelessly flirt with Tomomi in front of us, in front of me. It made me wants to gouge her eyes when she winks at her.
Right now, my fidgeting hand wants to reach the cheesecake on the table and hurl it at the witch’s face to wipe the disgusting smile she wears.
“Atleast someone’s enjoying this mixer.” Atsuko who was silent the entire time said in a whisper, stopping me from reaching the cheesecake.
“Tell me about it.” I replied, rolling my eyes. As I did my eyes slowly drifted towards Tomomi’s face.
I noticed she didn’t bring her camera today. Because this isn’t fun? Then she shouldn’t have come at all…well, I did invite her. But looking at her right now, her face flushed and grinning while talking to the witch, Tomo looks like a different person somehow. Was she like this before she met me? A party goer who wasn’t complaining when obviously the witch was taking advantage of her-
I stop mid-rant when realization hit me hard like a bullet train that can’t be stop. Flush? I looked closely at her face, and it’s definitely flush. But I heard her clearly when she said she’ll only drink her favorite vegetable juice when the witch offered her a beverage.
“Wh-what do you think you’re doing?” Takamina exclaimed eyes wide as she pointed at me. I ignored her.
I crawled on top of the table as I reached my right hand towards Tomo’s forehead. Everyone was startled of course, who wouldn’t? But I didn’t pay attention to their gawking faces or gasps as my mind has only one goal. And that’s to know if my guess was correct with Tomo’s flushed face as an indication.
“Tomo…chin..?”
Tomomi looked at me confusingly as I continue to feel her forehead using the back of my hand. Ignoring the odd look the witch was giving me, I pulled Tomo towards me, connecting our foreheads. Her eyes widened in surprised, and her already flushed face brightened even more from what I did. As I’ve correctly guess, this idiot girl has fever.
I heard Miichan snickered at the background, and I mentally note to myself to avoid her as much as possible, starting now.
When I pulled back, our eyes met. Tomomi no longer held the surprised look she had before; instead she was now smiling softly at me. I smiled back whilst an apologetic one as my right hand now unconsciously caresses her left cheek.
“Tomochin…” she whispered, her warm breathe brought soft tingles on my face.
“Let’s go home, Tomo.”
“Un.” She nodded, still smiling at me.
With her affirmation I climbed down the table and stand firmly on my feet. My hand held towards her. From the corner of my eyes, I can see Yuko gaping while Haruna had this small smile on her lips as she looked at me. When Tomomi finished collecting her things, she did the customary bow to everyone and finally reached for my offered hand. With our hands intertwined, we walk towards the door but not without throwing a smirk towards the fuming witch.
“Minami, let’s go home as well.” was the last thing I heard before closing the door behind us.
^
^
“WHAT THE HELL??!”
It was a tell-tale of a shout that Tomomi and I heard as we reach the exit of the famous establishment. It was probably the witch, letting out her frustrations that she didn’t get what she wants tonight. Stealing her prey right under her nose was probably a direct hit to her ego. Like I care, I laughed inwardly.
“Can you walk?”
“…Yeah.”
“…Tomochin, are you mad?” Her voice quiver as she asked.
“Yes, I am.” I replied honestly, squeezing her hand I was holding. Yes, I am mad that she still went to that stupid mixer when she has a fever to begin with.
And after that she didn’t say anything, and silence ensued between us, save for the stomping of our feet on the ground as we walk. We stay like that until we reached her apartment complex, and even after I tucked her on her bed, the awkward silence continue to devour us.
“…Why…”
I started, breaking the deafening silence as I settled myself on the carpeted floor, looking down at Tomomi’s figure under the protection of her blanket.
“…did you force yourself to come….even though you have a fever?”
“I wish you’d just said no.” I sighed when I heard no response from her. She continues to hide under her pink blanket and when I was about to pull it over her head, her meek voice stopped me.
“…B-but…” She squeaked.
“You…still would’ve gone without me, right?” Yes, I muttered to myself, but that was beside the point.
“…Y-you’re-a great girl Tomochin. I was scared someone might have stolen you away and I-I didn’t want that to h-happen.”
I contemplated after hearing her answer. But that won’t ever happen. What’s more important was that she risks her health just for that? I frowned.
“I’m sorry, Tomochin.” A light sobbed reached my ears and the frown on my face instantly vanished. This - this isn’t friendship is it…?
“I-I’m sorry I’m such a nuisance to you…”
And then another sobbed. This wasn’t friendship from the beginning. I felt so stupid to realize this just now. I guess I already have my answers…right here, right now.
“What an idiot! It’s not like I’m all that popular…” I said softly, slightly tugging at her blanket which she immediately held into, refusing to let go.
She’s acting like a child, but I find it cute. She’s so cute I find myself asking why me? I’m sure she has much better girls to choose from, so why did she fall for me? Tomomi’s really an idiot, she’s just too stupid, really….it’s not like I have something to offer beside my good looks, and not to mention my pitless appetite.
She already have everything, this grand apartment complex was clearly enough as evidence or the everyday free food she treats me. She came from a wealthy family, compared to me who has nothing. Realizing another fact about this girl made me felt small. This should make me feel discourage, but no. In the contrary it makes me want to do everything for her……everything.
“Tomo, stop hiding already, come on…”
A smile crept on my face as I spotted a rather huge picture framed hung on the wall near her bookshelf. I was too busy taking care of her before to notice it. Now that I have the chance, my eyes lingered at the picture. It was our picture under the Sakura tree. The very day that marked our friendship…..or so I thought. Below the picture, ‘TomoTomo’ was neatly carved on the frame. It’s beautiful.
“Really, I’m not angry anymore…” Slowly, she moved the blanket down, revealing her tear streak face. She’s still cute though.
She peered up at me.
“Ne Tomo, is there anything you want me to do? If there’s anything you want just tell me.” Looking at her eyes seriously, I managed to say the words I want to say without stuttering like an idiot or worse a complete idiot. Is there a difference? Right now, I really don’t care. What’s important if she understand the true meaning of my words?
“Well then…” She paused, completely revealing herself to me as she moves to a sitting position, kicking her blanket off of her.
“…You, Tomochin.”
My eyes widened at her blunt reply. Seeing my reaction she quickly averted her eyes away from me.
“J-Just kidding! I just wanted to try saying it. Maybe my head’s all messed up cause of the fever.” She laughed loudly, but I can tell she was forcing herself to do so. She was struggling, struggling not to break down in front of me. This has to stop; it’s painful to see her like this. No more denying my feelings for her, it’s time to give what she wants, it’s now my turn to make her happy.
“Okay…” Even I said it in a low voice she heard it clearly, clear enough to make her stop from laughing.
“Eh?!”
“You can h-have me, Tomo. That is, if that’s really what you want.” I looked away when I said that, it was way too embarrassing especially when she was staring at you like a goldfish out of the sea, her mouth slightly hung open.
I peered at her from my periphery, and it seems she was momentarily petrified. She was not moving at all, just staring at me. Gathering all the courage I could muster, I turn towards her. Slowly leaning forward I captured her lower lip with my own. Tasting her lips that kept tempting me ever since we met, her lips that kept hunting me and giving me sleepless nights since the day I got a taste of it. Now that I’m kissing those lips again, the world outside didn’t matter to me anymore. Consequences be damn.
I smiled when I felt Tomomi finally snapped out of her petrified state as she kissed me back with much fervor, encircling her arms around my neck as she pulled me closer to her. I complied and I ended up sitting on her lap, my hands automatically find its own way. One was cupping her cheek while my thumb caresses the side of her lip and the other one was on her hips. I was kissing her and she was returning the kiss tenfold, sending warm sensation on my chest. My heart was beating so fast, beating so rapidly because of her. Can she feel it? With our bodies pressed up together, I bet she does.
“You’ll get….my cold…” Tomomi murmured between kisses, refusing to let go. I can’t help but let out a light chuckle at that. Her action says the opposite thing as she continues to kiss me.
“You’re saying…that…but you’re still….kissing me…” I managed to say even my mouth was occupied in kissing hers; matching the intensity of the kiss she was giving me. But suddenly she pulled away; too sudden to my liking that a frown automatically appeared on my face.
“You’re right…I don’t want my Tomochin getting sick because of me.” She pouted cutely and I felt my cheeks getting warm upon hearing what she said. Normally, I found it repulsive when someone was being possessive, but not with Tomomi not at all. It’d only quicken the pace of my already eratic-heart.
“I-It’s fine….as long as y-you’ll be there to nurse me back.” I shyly smiled at her, and she was back to her petrified state again.
“O-oi, Tomo.”I poked her cheek lightly. She wasn’t responding, but before I could react she squealed loudly and envelope me in a hug.
“W-wha – let go, I – I can’t breathe.”
“My Tomochin is sooo cutee~” She squealed again, ignoring my struggles as she continued to envelope me in a bone crashing hug.
‘Pfwakk’“Ittaii~…”
She finally let go and I gladly welcome the air to my lungs. She was pouting at me again, her hands rubbing the top of her head. She can be an idiot at times, but that’s make her unique compared to other girls. She can be idiot but still stay cute at the same time, and with that thought in mind I laughed.
“Mou…Tomochin, you’re so mean.” I only grin at her.
“Ne Tomo, want to take a picture? To commemorate when we found out the feeling was mutual?”
At that, both of us burst out laughing, but as our laughters died Tomo pinned me a look that triggers my alarm system. She smiled mischievously while playfully tracing my arms down with her index finger. She smirked upon seeing the little panic attack on my eyes, its either fight or flight. I never got the chance to choose with those options though as she pounced on me. Making us stumbled down the carpeted floor, pinning me down. With her straddling me, escape level is zero to nothing.
“Now where was I before you rudely interrupted me?” She tilted her head cutely, arms crossed over her chest as she looked up at her intricate white ceiling. Finding no answers, which was an obvious fact she turn her gaze down to me. I gulp.
“AH! Of course, what was I thinking…” She giggled cutely, and then her eyes turn into a predatory one.
“Tomochin! I-ta-da-ki-ma-su…!”
I think I just dig a hole for myself here.

If anything changed since that night (which was only two days ago)…and I’m pretty sure it would forever engrave in my memory, which made me blush every time I think about it, that is…
“Tomochin…..chiyuu!”
I spun around and wasn’t surprised when what greeted me was a pair of lips connecting to my own. I frowned when she immediately pulled back. Without thinking I captured my bottom lip between my teeth as I run my tongue along with it. It’s just a peck but I can taste Tomomi on my lips. So, it’s Strawberry today, eh?
“Don’t do that.” She lightly slapped my arm, scolding me like a child. What did I do?
“What?”
“Biting your lips. You’ve been doing that a lot lately, mou…”
“Why not?” I asked, frowning again.
“Because…” She suddenly kissed me on the lips, erasing the frown on my face. But before I could kiss her back she pulled away, the frown returning to my face.
“…those lips belong to me and I don’t want you to damage it.” She winked playfully, tapping my cheek. And of course I blushed. Really, this girl is so weird.
“So, the mighty Itano finally has an owner eh? I want a master too.”
Do I really have to guess who said that? I groaned. There’s only one person I know who excels in getting under a person’s skin for too much teasing. And I was hoping to avoid her in all cost. Guess it wasn’t my lucky day.
“Well, hello there chicas!” A smiling Minegishi Minami while wriggling her eyebrows greeted us in a…inhuman way? She was like bursting with energy despite the heavy books on her arms. And she was smiling too much, too much to my liking. Something’s telling me she’s up to no good.
“Let’s go, Tomo.”
“I’ll walk you home.”
“Okay.”
I glared at Miichan when she was about to open her mouth, and she instinctively step back. Racing the books she was holding to shield herself of any bodily pains. I hide a smirked, and she smiled awkwardly, waving her hand to shoo us away from her. I’ve heard from Atsuko that Miichan took a beating from Mariko when she decided to puke her guts out inside Mariko’s car. I guess that made the great Minegishi to lay off with her teasings for awhile.
“Well, see you tomorrow TomoTomo combo. Bleh!” I rolled my eyes while Tomomi giggled. Miichan could be so immature sometimes. But I guess that’s what I like in her.
So, has anything changed at all? I glanced down and the answer came to me in a split second.
“Want to hold hands?”
“Sure.” Tomomi quickly replied, coupled with a cute smile that I can’t help but swooned inwardly.
“But don’t you think people will think we’re weird?” She tried wriggling out her hand from me but I held it firmly.
“…the witch is weirder compared to us, besides you kissed me the day we met. And you’re asking this now?” I mumbled to myself, but I think she heard it.
“W-wha – huh?!”
“Nothing….I was just thinking about how cute you are…..even though you’re an idiot at times.” Tomomi instantly blushed upon hearing the compliment. Now I know why that perverted squirrel loves to tease poor Haruna.
“YOU!!!”
A figure suddenly blocked our way, startling both Tomo and I. Her icy glares solely directed to me. I felt Tomomi tightly clings to my arm, frightened at the ominous presence before us.
“YOU, IT’S BECAUSE OF YOU – Auurkk!”
“Gomen ne, we’ll be on our way now. See you around, TomoTomo.” Kojiharu waved goodbye, smiling while dragging Yuko in a choke hold.
“Nyan-Nyan…l-let go. Tomochin s-should-…”
“No. When I said no, it’s a no, Yuuchan.”
“H-hai, Nyan-Nyan…”
“Now let’s go home.”
“As long as you’ll let me touch them.”
“Kyaa!!!”
‘Pfwakk’“Ittaiee~…”
“Yuuchan, baka!”
“NOoo, Nyan-Nyan! Don’t leave me behind.”
As the couple left the vicinity the girl beside me laughed. “You sure do have omoshiroi friends, ne Tomochin?”
“Yes, never have a dull moment with them.” I laughed along with her. As for the perverted squirrel suddenly going on a psycho mode on me…well, I also heard from Atsuko that the witch made Yuko pay half of the bill after Tomo and I left. It’s not like it was my fault, I wasn’t the one who ordered the foods in the first place. She should’ve blamed herself, and now she’s broke.
“Tomochin, let’s take a picture.” Tomo suggested.
“What? Here?” I looked around and there’s nothing here, except…wait there a second. Is that Takamina and Atsuko sneaking towards the school garden?
“Tomochin…?”
Glancing one last time at the direction where I last saw my two bestfriends, I mentally note to myself to interrogate them later. “Okay, let’s take a picture.”
“Yay! But let’s take the picture over there.”
When I looked at the direction Tomomi was pointing at, a smile readily appeared on my face. It was after all, under the Sakura tree we’re we first met.
