A 22-year-old rookie for the Florida Marlins named Anibal Sanchez pitched the first no-hit, no-run game in the major leagues in more than two years on Wednesday night, shutting down the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0.
The surprise Marlins, dismissed at the beginning of the season with a team full of rookies (including its manager), are now tied for SECOND place in the N.L. Wild Card standings. What a STORY this would be if the team even made it close to the post-season. And what a wonderful thing for the fans in Miami and South Florida.
From the AP wire story:
Announced attendance was 12,561, but the actual crowd was perhaps half that. The surprising Marlins are last in the major leagues in attendance even though are three games behind San Diego in the NL wild-card standings. (emphasis mine)
What a disgrace.
