Bill Simmons's running account of Game Seven of the NLCS:

And now we wait for Saturday...
I'm not a fan of either the Mets or Cards. A small part of me was rooting for the Mets because 1) my mom wanted them to win, and 2) they'd make a better opponent for the Tigers. I'm glad Pujols has another shot in the Fall Classic and La Russa probably makes it to the HOF with this pennant, his... I dunno, fifth? I think I was rooting against the Cards a bit because I wanted to see a bit of the La Russa lustre diminished by losing another postseason series. For some reason, La Russa has become Expert Manager for all time, a title I don't think is merited. He popularized the now-standard system of getting every goddamn platoon edge in the late innings by making a bazillion pitching changes, slowing down the pace of games, and turning off a LOT of fans in the process. His judgment in choosing ballplayers is also kinda odd to me. He's lucky to have Pujols, the best player on the planet. Otherwise his season would be finished by players like David Eckstein and So Taguchi.
It could easily have been New York in five games; sometimes, shit just happens. Pedro and El Duque go down, Mets roster is assembled without the foresight of a couple rainouts and the rotation is a mess. I think Mets fans will be tremendously disappointed for the next few days and will probably be in no shape to accept the notion that they may have exceeded themselves by taking the NLCS the full route. Once upon a time, the Mets had STARS pitching for them in these do-or-die affairs: Seaver, Koosman, Ryan, Darling, Gooden, Sid Fernandez (Kaiser High grad!). Will casual baseball fans be expected to remember the name of Oliver Perez? I think not.
Yet, this is what Willie Randolph had to deal with. Absolutely the worst time of the year to play 52-Pick Up with your pitching staff but you know, shit happens. It's a short week and I think we've learned by now that the postseason is a helluva contest between the league's best teams and sometimes the big boys aren't the ones left standing. Anyone remember Joe Torre's team? Sheesh, that LDS series seemed ages ago.
No disgrace for the Mets; this series or the regular season. They got Wright and Reyes. Pedro is on the mend, and John Maine could become a solid arm for the next few years (provided he improves his control).
Blah, blah... OK that's enough postwhoring for the evening...
