Much like Reyes on Game 1, Carpenter pitched a phenomenal game for 8 full innings with only 3 hits allowed and no errors.  Frankly, the Tigers did well to keep the Cards at only 5 runs.  Aside from Kenny Rogers last night, the Tigers aren't playing like the team that won the ALCS.  If they don't get something going tonight then they're not going to get a chance to go back to Detroit.

I'm baaaack!

Bottom 7th: First and second, NO outs.  Rodney's wild throw to first scored the tying run for St. Louis.  Brutal defensive inning for Detroit.

Edmonds caught looking on a 2-2 change.  WHAT was he waiting for?

Rodney bringing it big time...  Two strikes on Rolen...  GONE on another change by Rodney!  Wow.

Now Preston Wilson, the automatic strikeout....  NO, a single to left, Taguchi scores from second.  Throw cut off and Pujols caught inbetween second and third.  Friggin' amazing!

4-3 Cards, end 7th.

TOP 8TH: I-Rod lines one to deep left and hustles into second with a clutch double.

Now Polonco...  grounder to second, Rodriguez to third.  Boy, St. Louis did all that crap in the 7th and now Detroit is a sacrifice away from tying the score again.

La Russa out of the dugout for the double switch.  Here comes Wainwright...

Long double by Inge to right center.  Tie game!

Alexis Gomez up to pinch hit...  Foul tip strikeout.  He was up there hacking!

Granderson looking to pick up Inge at second...  looks at a curve for a strike: the same kind that Beltran saw to end the NLCS...  Foul for strike two.

Full count...  curve ball, got him looking!  Just like in New York...

Extra innings, anyone?

Middle 8th: 4-4.

BOTTOM 8TH: Here comes Zumaya!  I still think the FOX radar gun is full of shit, though.

Hmm, wild and high to Molina...  WOW, walk on four pitches.  I think...  Leyland should get him out of there before he implodes!

You know...  I don't recall EVER seeing Leyland on the field with a Tigers jersey.  Always that warmup jacket.

Five straight balls.  Six, 2-0 on a high pitch to Miles...  Still, I'd love to be Zumaya with a badass fastball.  He may get out of this jam yet.

Called strike and a foul back.  Now things are even again....  soft grounder to Inge at third, who gets the force at second.

Now Encarnacion, who's a free swingers.  Zumaya should throw strikes...  and gets him, but a wild pitch on the third strike and Molina goes to second.

Eckstein...  who'd you rather see against the 100-mph flamethrower: Eck or Taguchi?  3-1 count to Eckstein...

Eck flies one to left... Monroe...  juuuuuust tips the ball off his glove and Molina scores from second!  Monroe dove at the last second and ALMOST caught it!  Was it hit further than expected?  Eckstein makes it to second on the double.

Taguchi fouls out to first.  Maybe they shoulda issued the IBB to Eck on 3-1.

End 8th: 5-4 Cards.

TOP 9TH: Now Wainwright has to shut the door.  He made game seven of the NLCS exciting in the 9th inning.  Still it's only a ONE-run lead.

1-2 high and tight heater to Monroe swung and missed!  One out.

Guillen...  curveball for strike one.  That may be his defining pitch...  foul to the left side for strike two.  The fans are hella loud and thank goodness there was NO RAIN DELAY IN THE GAME!

Another two-strike curve...  taken for ball one...  Guillen has balls or was just lucky.

Now 2-2.  It's past midnight in the East but just 6:00 PM here in Hawaii...  ground ball to Pujols, who gets the out unassisted.  Two down.

Ordonez.  Oh for four today...  whoops, first pitch swinging.  Grounder out to Eckstein, the new Mister October.  And the Cards lead the World Series three games to one.  Last time they were up 3-1 to the Tigers they lost three straight, including two at home.

Tigers lost the game due to sloppy fielding and unlucky outfield play.  Some Detroit bats came back to life but the pitchers got jack shit support in the field.  I feel for ya, Tiger fans.

FINAL: St. Louis 5, Detroit 4.

Yeah... I'm angry. The Cards didn't just win the game, the Tigers lost it by handing every possible opportunity to them.  I'm so frustrated by players not stepping up (at least Pudge got something going), costly errors (forgetting fundamentals, like basic infield fielding) and walking anyone but Pujols. ARGH!

(I don't really follow baseball normally... but I gotta root on my hometown team.)

AND THE CARDS WIN IT 4-2~!  Like every other StL win, this game was marked by strong pitching, clutch hitting, and Detroit errors.  Great game, great series.  The first MLB game I ever saw was with the Cardinals against the Padres when I was 11, and I've been a fan ever since.  Until recently, though, I haven't exactly been the most devout baseball, but I renewed my love for the game this postseason.  感動した、ありがとう~StL!!!

I'm glad it's over... it was too painful to watch. The Tigers were a f'ing embarassment to their fans.

http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/2006/10/_and_then_there.php

Rich Lederer of "Baseball Analysts" reviews the Cardinals' championship run.  I liked this passage:

Sure, some people will say that Detroit didn't hit or field or run the bases well. And you know what? Those folks are right. But rather than calling the Tigers out for losing the Series, why not give credit where credit is due? St. Louis beat Detroit four games to one. The Yankees didn't do that. The A's didn't do that. And the Cardinals didn't give the Padres or the Mets a chance to do that either.

I also believe people were expecting a whoopin' by the Tigers cause of the new American League superiority (smugness, perhaps?).  Well not THIS year.

By the way...  this is the tenth World Series title for the Cardinals.  I think that's more than the Dodgers AND Giants combined, no?

True words indeed. They beat a Tigers team that beat a much more powerful A's and Yankees lineup. LaRussa finally gets that "choke" tag off him too.

The missing big bat in the Tigers lineup, the cold weather?? the inexperience showed.

I get the impression that the Cardinals pitching staff would probably cool off the starting lineups of the Yankees and Athletics too.  They were all clicking at just the right time.

Can you imagine Jeff Weaver shutting down the Yanks?  All of New York would go absolutely BUGFUCK...

Speaking of which, I STILL can't believe how truly badass Jeff Weaver was in the clincher.  This... you could NOT have predicted, or be willing bet hard-earned money on, given the events of the regular season.  I said earlier that you SHOULD take 2-1 odds against the Cards but never considered Weaver as a integral part of the equation.
