Hearts
For years Takahashi Minami had relied everything to her heart, asking it every now and then for decisions she couldn’t quite deal with.
She’d say,
‘Hey, heart. What should I do?’ And her heart would tell her what’s usually best. It had never failed her, not even once. Until she met a certain beautiful girl.
‘Hey, heart. What should I do?’ She asked when she saw her sitting alone in the quiet library, contemplating if she should join her or not.
Minami got nothing in response.
Minami genuinely thought that there was something wrong with her heart and so she scheduled for a check up at the nearest hospital.
‘Your heart skips a beat,’ said the doctor.
She nodded at the doctor like she knew what he was talking about, but he said that it was fine and that’s what is important. And so Minami left the hospital with her hand on top of her chest, near her heart, patting it like a good pet.
All was well and everything returned to normal, and Minami was glad that her heart was responding to her again. She was at the ice cream store, asking her heart what to pick between vanilla and strawberry when she suddenly caught her peripheral vision.
‘Hey, heart. What should I pick?’ Minami asked as she tried to concentrate on the ice cream and not on the other girl instead.
‘Heart?’ And again she was left with no response.
She returned the ice cream in the fridge and tapped her chest, trying to get her heart’s attention. Minami furrowed her eyebrows as she tapped once again.
She smiled not long after, before reaching out for the strawberry ice cream she had discarded earlier.
‘Strawberry, it is,’ she said happily.
When she was sure that her heart was talking to her again, Minami decided to approach the other girl but the latter had already left.
She pouted while her heart continued to beat.
Weeks later she had finally realized the reason for her heart’s muted episodes. And since it only happens when she is around, she deduced that it was her and so she tried to ignore and steer away from the girl as much as she could.
But fate didn’t want any of that because one day it just decided to shove the two of them together in an elevator before cutting the whole city’s power off.
It was a good thing that Minami wasn’t afraid of the dark and was okay with tight, enclosed spaces, but she couldn’t say the same for the latter.
‘Minami?…’ She heard her call out to her in a weak voice.
‘Hey, heart. What should I do?’ Minami asked, but it was more of like a reflex, because now she was sure that her heart wouldn’t respond because she was there.
And just as expected, it stayed quiet inside her chest.
Minami sighed and decided to ask her brain for a change.
‘Hey, brain. What should I—‘ ‘Go,’ her heart suddenly said.
‘H-Heart?’ ‘Go,’ it repeated. And so Minami nodded and smiled as she reached and patted for the other girls hand in the dark, threading their fingers together when she had found it.
‘Don’t be scared, Acchan. I’m here.’
And their hands fit ever so perfectly.
